My celebration of 1 year on RU-vid didn’t go quite as planned! What was originally supposed to be a summit bivi of Cnicht was changed to a summit bivi of Yr Arddu, which I then ended up bailing on - it's been over 2 weeks now and this experience still makes me shudder! 😖
Thank you so much for watching me for 1 year now 🥰 All of you guys who have been here since the start, and all my new subscribers too, I appreciate you all so much and am so grateful that you like to watch me doing what I love
..THANK YOU! ❤
See part one of this trip here: • A Night In A Mountain ...
Lyme disease.. (among other things that ticks transmit) is a seriously nasty, potentially life-changing illness that you don’t wanna get. Check yourself thoroughly EVERY time you travel through long grass, ferns and anywhere that you make contact with foliage. Don’t panic if you get bitten but do get them off. They are unlikely to transmit Lyme if they are promptly removed before they start feeding. Look up how to remove them safely and kill each one only after it is removed. Experts disagree on how long it takes for ticks to transmit Lyme, but it is generally thought to take over 24 hours
After this trip, my car had to have a hardcore interior cleaning. I bought a new drone, sent my camera for repair again (the battery compartment broke on Yr Arddu). And replaced my potentially-infested socks and my waterproof over-trousers, which I'd ripped. So it turned out to be a bit of an expensive and knackering trip. My health, thankfully, has been fine

Hi Clair, i first came across your channel mid July, and it has changed my life. I have been widowed for just over 8 years and not had a holiday in that time, by the first week of August i had bought tent, backpack boots ect ect changed the thirsty Merc for a diesel Saab and was on my way to Cumbria. Absolutely loved it. Have since been back there again, and just recently come back from a few days at Dovedale. Have seen some wonderful misty mornings, spectacular sunsets, 3 RAF Typhoons flying low over Skiddaw and a naked man running down Blencathra 🤔🤔 !!!!. Am now researching lightweight tents ect to go wild camping in Wales and Scotland. Thanks for the inspiration, and the gear guides and look forward to your next video. Finally, for anyone that has got this far, i am a almost 68year old, semi retired NHS bank worker, don't let age stop you, get out there and enjoy our beautiful country. Take care James 😊

Great to here you've been inspired so. I got inspired by Patrick Dickson last year. He did a video on recreational tree climbing. So for my 70th birthday I bought the gear and have been enjoying the canopies of many magnificent trees.

At 72, I started fell walking again this year. Used to do it a lot in my youth. Thought it was all over but not so, I just needed someone to do it with. Not quite as brave as you and Clair, to do it alone. But that's ok. x

You made a rough trek, lost your drone, dealt with a lot, and came back to tell about it. Not a fail. Just pushing tough, but having enough sense to recognize when it was time to call it. Loved the sound of the rain on the car. I'd have slept there a bit too after all that. And enjoyed it. I've lived in many places, including 4 years in the interior of Alaska. I feel the same way about mosquitos as you do those ticks. I've been in Southwest Texas since 1996 now. Being able to lay in bed or lean back in my truck and listen to the rain is a rare treat these days. Much respect and wishing you a long and wonderful life.

Never worry about the trips you take or how they turn out, I expect that most of us are here for your great attitude and positivity! I worked outdoors for years and share your loathing of ticks, I can highly recommend treating your clothes with any available form of permethrin, it is great at repelling ticks and other biting insects. I know many people have strong views on some of these harsher chemical products, but with all the diseases that can me passed through insect bites, I always felt it was a compelling case. Best of luck, looking forward to more adventures i the coming year !!

As an Australian bush walker, I strongly agree. I spray the strongest insect repellent I can on my clothes, prior to each walk and after every major stop. I haven’t had a problem with leaches, tics, flies or mosquitoes for years. I like to minimise the amount of heavy chemicals in my life, but having had to have minor surgery from my GP 30 years ago to remove an unfound tic and the amount of Ross River Fever here, down under 🇦🇺, I no longer feel guilty about using heavy duty insect repellent on my clothes, pack, face, ears and neck. Not to mention, the spiders here can pack a mean bite at times.

Hello WildBeare and thank you for this video. I've been following for about a year and love your videos, but this one was particularly meaningful for me. About 4 years ago I became obsessed with the idea of rowing solo across the Atlantic. I started training, did courses, bought a boat and started building a following so that I could raise money for a couple of charities. Then a few months ago I went out for a training session from Bridlington and everything changed. I don't really know what it was but there was a voice in my head (no I wasn't hallucinating), and it was saying "you can't do this". I thought about it long and hard and decided eventually that I had to bail. It's not easy giving up on something like that but your video has helped me to put it into some kind of perspective and come to terms with it. Looking forward to the next video!

That's a tick horror show, the right decision to get out. I bailed from Dartmoor last year, albeit for different reasons. Congratulations on the one year anniversary, here's to another great one, thanks Claire 🎉🍻👍

Yehh, it was so bad, I wish I'd filmed it but I got myself all in a bit of a stress with it all and just wanted them off me ASAP. Nowt wrong with a bail Mike! I've had a few. Thank you so much! :D

Wow, I've been walking in the hills for years and I don't think I've ever seen a tick. If your ever in that area again I can recommend Moel Mawr on the other side of the valley from Cnicht, it has just about the best mountain views in wales, several great paths up and some interesting old mine workings half way up on one side and a damn on the other.

You should consider investing in Permethrin. You can treat all your clothes, rucksacks, anything fabric based with it, and it will kill Ticks on contact for ~6 weeks or ~6 wash cycles. It is highly toxic to aquatic life and cats in it's liquid form, so care needs to be taken applying it to clothes; but it is the most effective long term tick deterrent available. Combining it with smidge is the way to go. It also kills any midge that land on your clothes. Worth it when going off trail or in peak beastie season. It can even be applied to tents or sleeping bag liners.

Wanted to check if someone else mentioned this, I fully concur. Works great in the USA in tick country and doesn't cause problems on synthetic materials like DEET. Also won't rinse away in rain or other wet conditions. Of course you should test a small patch of materials to see if you have allergic reaction. Perfect for a light sleeping bag liner that can double as a wipe for your back and hard to reach places. BTW, I do have a cat and as long as the treated items are fully dry, the cat will be ok. With this, you can defeat the ticks and go where you haven't gone before. Permethrin is widely used for this and certain parasitic maladies which you can look up to determine if this is the right solution for you. Good luck

Claire(?)......I haven't solo camped in almost 40 years but I have often wondered if a person could put a flea/tick collar around each boot at ankle level to keep critters away. I don't know if they are safe to handle every day but it might be worth asking about.

Hey Claire, Happy 1st YT Birthday! Wow how time flies. I've been here since the beginning, even before you went solo. You have grown so much in your skills. Mastering your fear of heights, updating your gear and fine tuning it and become one of the finest editors I've seen. I appreciate the extra effort you put in while filming, all the back and forth camera work to make the shots into a story. Your music and narration is top notch. Sorry about the drone and the ticks. Wishing you much success in the next year's adventures! Happy Trails from Southern California, USA.

First and foremost let me just say I'm glad to see you made it home safe, that makes it a successful trip. As long as we've learn from our experiences whether good or bad that's what counts. I subscribe to your channel about a month ago and I know it's just going to get bigger and bigger just because of the person you are. One of your followers watching this video may find themselves in the same predicament as you one day, and they will be reminded that it's OK to bail and get home safe, and that will be all thanks to you. You are inspiring and make truthful videos and I can't wait to see what's in store for another year. Happy RU-vid anniversary Claire.

I'm sorry that you had to suffer through the tic infested forest! That must have been maddening! I'm glad that you made it back, fairly unscathed! Don't consider it a fail, Claire. Think of it as a valuable lesson/experience, interspersed with moments of great beauty and wonder! The cave was very cool! I shared your joy when you snuggled up in your sleeping bag, and sighed a big sigh of relief and comfort--"so cozy" as you so aptly phrased it! :) I hope you slept like a baby! Thank you for all the beautiful footage and the serenity it evoked! You always fill my heart with great peace! Happy, Happy Birthday/Anniversary on your one year celebration, Claire!!! Thank you for all the pure joy you have shared with us! You are wonderful! Many happy returns! :)
