I Bought a $700 Barn Find 

I’m 20 and the beginning of this video made me tear up a little bit because I was introduced to the world of motorcycles in a very similar way when I found my moms 1985 Honda rebel with a siezed engine in the shed when I was 15. I got it running, hit the street at 16, and blew the head gasket on the highway. I didn’t know anything about engines so I spent 9 months pulling it apart, putting it together over and over until it ran again. It’s had about 2200 miles on it since I started riding it and has brought the world of motorcycles to me and my 2 best friends that I taught on it. Everybody’s first bike is always an emotional rollercoaster.

Man this video took a turn that I least expected it to. Finding a model of bike that first started you on your path and THEN giving it away to start someone else on their path is not what I expected. The dream lives on. God bless you.

You need to do a cheapest and most expensive Amazon roadtrip. Like a long distance trip with 2 riders both using only gear from Amazon, but with 2 very different budgets.

That kid is awesome! His Schwinn Stingray Fastback is a pretty rare find in all original shape. Good to see young people who are gettin' down with the hobby!

I love how the kid was so happy he was virtually speechless Sean. You stunned him with your generosity. It's blatantly clear he's going to learn what he needs to know about it, restore it, and then enjoy it for years to come.

Excellent back story love to hear how it all began, your channel and videos have also inspired me to get on two wheels after 15 yrs of first learning to ride on a dirt bike. Now I have two bikes and nothing makes me happier then starting them up hearing the rumble and feeling the wind on the open road. Working on the bikes to add mods and do maintenance is also blissful.

Congrats, man! I have a permanent search on Ebay for the color/model Puch moped that put me on the streets in the 7th grade due to a family death. I'm on my 7th HD now....I'm only 53 but I've ridden 2 wheels in all 5 of my decades and legally on the roads for 41 years now. I'm sure that is really special and probably will be a treasure you'll keep forever. 👊

This made me tear up. I’m nineteen and i built an 80cc motorized bicycle when I was seventeen and was instantly addicted. Six months later I bought my first bike from a close family friend. A 1978 Yamaha DT400. I wound up paying $300 out of the $800 he wanted for it because he told me it was mine on Christmas. Best gift I’ve ever received.

Mopeds are where I started too. I have a sweet 77 Puch Maxi in my garage and it’s still a blast to ride.

Your video brought back memories. My first bike was a basket case Garelli Rex. My dad and I put it together and road it on off road trails in the late sixties and seventies. We had a blast on that thing! It's weirdest quirk was you didn't know what direction it would run until you let out the clutch! We were just learning how to time the engine. Wow we were so young and full of energy back then.

You know it’s going to a good home when he said he’s going to do some research and fix it up. That bike just got a new life with someone you can tell will love it.

Oh my gosh, 33 years ago when I was 14 my first ride was a 50cc Vespa Ciao moped very similar to the Garelli of the video. I could totally relate to what you were saying, my Vespa was awfully slow and because of its color and noise it earned the nickname of the Green Hornet. But at that time it mainly meant freedom for a teenage kid on the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico. Thanks for sharing.

Ahh this is great; my first motorcycle was a Honda MB5 (1982)... 49cc but 5-speeds, it held the World's Land Speed Record for that engine class (60 mph)! I bought it brand new off the showroom floor in Fresno, California for $600. Honda only imported this bike for 1 year to the United States; no motorcycle license to operate this bike! It red-lined at a mind-blowing 10,500 RPMs but still got 90+mpg. I drove it 4,400 miles and sold it to my brother.

You are awesome for that. I'm 42 yrs old now and like you I was always obsessed with bikes mopeds etc. Had a backyard filled with projects. And never could get them going so I sold them all. But I loved tinkering with them. And finally after so many years I got me a super clean 1979 puch for 60 dollars that i was able to get running but having some problems with it now. But I wouldnt give it up for anything. Thank you for sharing luv the vids.

I don’t have a bike anymore as I gave my Vulcan nomad to a man who had his bike stolen. When I saw that motobecane it reminded me of my childhood. I had a motobecane traveler and it was my first “street bike” very cool of you to share your childhood experience with that young man. Paying it forward as usual.

Miss my first moped, Honda pa50. Loved learning about things like carbs at that age

My dad bought a Baretta moped in 77, with the baskets. 4 year old me would sit on the back and hand him newspapers to throw. We had a house fire in 81 and it ruined the plastic for the throttle going into the carb. My dad kept it and I decided to finally "fix" it in 87. Neighbor rigged it to work and I mowed his lawn in return. That moped saved my life. At that age, I was severely depressed and didn't have anything in my life. Then fixing that moped and riding it for 5 years made a difference. It's why I love motorcycles and want to get another one.

I loved this story! Related. Got my first gas powered moped at age 10. 1959 Sears Moped made by Puch. Listed for $179 in 1960. Next was a Allstate and most brands since. Currently on a restored 1964 CA77, Honda 305cc Dream. Yep been on bikes 61 years and still have many miles to go. My God Continue Bless Bikes and Beards.

That was awesome!! My grandfather, when I was about that age gave me a 1957 175CC allstate made by sears. It is what gave me the motorcycle passion.

the smile on your face is what this is all about! my first bike that started it all was a 1996 Honda cr125. I was 13 thought I knew it all, rebuilt it and forgot to change the oil (did top end) turned out a chunk from the old ring came back up and destroyed the jug! we live and learn! you're a good dude!

That's epic. I'm 17 but I recently purchased a mini chopper off of a dude and I've been fixing it up and everything, I also painted it with the American flag but then I sanded it down to make it look worn, like it had been through a war. The engine still works and it can get up to 50km/hr or 30 miles/hr. I ended up installing a train horn to it and I've been learning a lot about electrical stuff. Sadly the starter is complete garbage, sometimes it works, sometimes it just sucks, but I've found ways around it, like using a socket wrench to give the starter a jump start, or just kicking it to make it work. All in all, it's a really cool bike, and I'm very happy I made the decision to buy and work on it.

My 1st bike was a Sears Allstate 60cc I rebuilt (the tank had been sugered) at age 10 in 69 so i'd have something to ride. I was 1st placed on the gas tank of a Honda 350 Scrambler in 63 and have loved bikes my whole life (Backfired on the guy who did it trying to scare me). Just haven't had one since my 2nd wife took it and everything else 17 yrs ago. Kinda really sucks for a rider, but Gods will be done. Like your broadcast, just found it today. Good Job & look forward to seeing more.

That was so cool not just to fine one of them but to actually pass it to a young teenager. My first one at 13 was give to me and it's what got me started. Then I eventually got two more. I still have one left in the family Barn we boarded it out and modified the carb and breather with a straight pip. Got a speeding ticket on it 55 in a 35 at 16 years old. I road these all the way till my early 20's. A bunch of us boys and girls would ride these and other rare mopeds 265 miles from Columbia, SC to Myrtle Beach, SC every summer. Thank God for you sharing this you really brought back some good old memories of mine from the 70"s and 80's we are definitely blessed. Ride on Brother, Bo

I had that exact moped, that Motobecane. I bought it with my own money in 1974 , for $250 Canadian. What a summer I had with that baby, way before Quebec had any idea about scooter laws. It actually had a top speed over 45 mph out of 49.9 cc.

I'm always amazed at how fast you can go one something like this. My little Puch Maxi has a tiny 38mm piston and can get me to 45mph. So great to see you started out on a little moped and are showing everyone what it's all about!

If you are asking, the motorino (small motor), that's how we called in italy anything with less than 50cc, has the pedals (and the small engine) because of some old legislation, basically it's a motorized bicycle as the law is concerned so you don't need a driving licence, etc. after that they removed the requisite for the pedal so you can have some cool small bike (yes there was some abomination back in the days, i'm not saying a motorcycle with pedal...but...) 50 cc two stroke 12/14 carburator (if i recall correctly) and 4 speed gear box, plus a big bike look.

My Grandfather had stories of a moped he found while Deployed in World War II that he loved and screwed around on.

I had that exact moped when I was about 12, the Garelli, I played on that thing every day for two years until I got something a bit bigger, one thing is for sure they are reliable and fast compared to today's restricted mopeds, my brother "sorted it out" decoked, new points condenser plug HT lead and reamed the carb out increasing the volume by 3-4mm and up jetted it, pod filter, it was like turbo moped after that, it shares common components with the Gillera moped, mine had the square plastic headlight speedo unit, PS that kid is now finished with bicycles, well done, moved him up a gear,

Since I was a kid I always wanted a moped when some of my cool friends had them, but we couldn't afford them. Fast forward to last winter and my little brother picked up two while helping clean up a property and didn't know anything about them. I gave him $150 for both. A couple days later, cleaned the points, change the fuel line and petcock...this 54 year old finally had a running moped. 76 Western Auto Sachs 49cc. Looks a lot like yours but didn't have the oil filler. Mine only runs about 20mph...lol.

Me and 2 of my brothers put a 2hp Briggs and Stratton rope wind start on an old Schwinn beach cruiser. My dad welded a plate to it for the motor and welded a pulley in sprocet after we lopped of the pedals. That configuration didn't work so dad took us to bank for our own cash and to Joe Apol at Skelley station in Raymond where he sold us an M50 Harley Davidson (1966) with a regular tank, not the moped style. Shortly after that Joe became a Harley dealer.......and a successful one at that. He now has 2 locations, the original one in Raymond, MN and another at Alexandria, MN. Last summer I bought my first adult Harley, an 02 Super Glide.

I've watched a few of your videos and I've enjoyed them. But this particular one is really my favorite so far. I would consider myself more spiritual than religious, but it really is refreshing to see someone who serves their chosen deity by giving, rather than expecting everything to travel in the other direction. I can relate to your story 100%. Although I did not create a motorcycle business, I was 16, had a pilots license but could not get a drivers license in Argentina until I was 18. A neighbor told me he had this old bike he would sell me cheap and I pounced on it before I even knew what it was. It turned out to be a Paperino 48 cc made by Garelli I believe. It was in bad shape and had not run for many years. I pushed it all the way home adding air to the back tire every so many blocks. It took most of the day and some people that saw me pushing this thing asked me if I had lunch and welcomed me to their back yard to share their BBQ meal. I was on my summer holidays from school and my parents were on vacation so I had the house to myself and a buddy my same age. We worked on that bike for two days and finally at 3 am we got it to fire up. The nut holding the exhaust pipe was cross threaded and split so it had no exhaust on it and made a good racket. The neighbors complained so that shut us down for the night. The first month or two I rode it everywhere with a makeshift exhaust, a leaking front tire and a back tire held together with duct tape. The chain was stretched so it kept jumping a tooth now and then, but I learned how a 2 cycle engine worked. I carried a pill bottle with extra fuel in it so when I ran out of fuel I would pour in this mouthful of fuel and ride to the next gas station. I would dig through the dumpster looking for empty oil cans at the gas stations to add the last drips of oil from several cans to my two liter gas tank. A year later I made a new frame out of water pipes and used an old kerosene stove tank as my fuel tank and created my own "cruiser" bike. The frame eventually split in two and I Iost my front tooth and the bike never ran again. I had two more bikes after that and have now many many years later put money down on a Honda Shadow 750 ACE that I am waiting for, I tried to attach a picture of the Paperino but you will have to google the ugly duckling.

Hi I just happen to see the video. That was great gifting to a kid was inspirational. The thing is that when I was in high school(1989) my dad bought me a moped by name TVS 50(back in India) I think 50 for 50cc looks exactly like Garelli except there is no separate oil tank instead they mix like 25ml of 2 stroke oil with petrol (gasoline). The video reminded me of the past. Thanks for posting.
