I also love that he is not one of those douchbags that says things like... "While this car is slow by todays standards...". Or... "This isn't very fast...". He is like "No, this is still damn fast. Maybe not as fast as some of the crazier shit that's out today, but it is exhilarating to drive." And he is right, those are still powerful cars.
@@EverydayDriver Thank you for this video,I was the owner also Z32 twin turbo 2+2 seater in Grey color. Realy nice car with Character and preaty fast for this time early 90s😍
It's not even nostalgia anymore. The 300ZX and the 928 are genuinely good cars, nostalgia or no. If they were made today as enthusiast products, they would sell like hotcakes.
The most under appreciated car of the 90s in my opinion. I had 2 TTs and an NA and they were simply beautiful for their time. A silver TT drove by my bus stop in 1989 that must’ve been one of the first off the line. It’s was magnificent to a 12 y/o boy at the time.
The 300ZX is my favorite ever car. I've had 2 and want to get another one but I'm afraid of it going up in value and it getting away from me financially. The first one was an NA and I flew down to Miami and drove it back to Chicago. It was a dream. The second was a TT and I was lucky to find it close to home. Now I'm excited for the next TT Z in 2022.
One of the best looking 90’s cars ever, imo. T-Tops are the best compromise to a open car experience. Nothing else looked like it. Plus, the Lamborghini Diablo used Nissan 300zx headlights. So… yeah. Awesome purchase man! So excited for future videos!
That was one of the first cars to put big horsepower into the hands of regular people, up until then you had to buy a Porsche or Ferrari (or some such!) to get a 300hp car. A game changer when it came out for sure, congrats!
The 90-96 Nissan 300ZX is one of the greatest sports cars of all time. Read reviews from the era and it was almost always highly praised, even over its main rivals at the time. A world-class effort from Nissan at the time and still holds up today. Very excited to see the content about this car. Cue the Van Halen song!
What a great video! You sure brought back some great memories for me with this vid today! I graduated H.S. in 1991, and while in my first 2 years of university I worked at my local Nissan dealer (my folks had a 1991 Maxima they had bought there), and I ended up buying this same exact car, a 1991 300zx TT in red. Identical. It was probably one of my favorite cars, I did the pacific coast highway 3 times from Canada to Chula Vista in it. I ended up selling it and downgrading to a 91 240sx LE - sad face is sad. I've had many Nissans since then, 2 GTRs now, and I'll be getting a 400 for sure. I've had a ton of fast/sports cars over the years, but none give me fonder memories than my first, my 91 300zx.
370z owner, looking forward to the new Z!! I want some bottom end TQ!!!! Like you, mine has been up to the Wash/Canada border, AZ, CA, and now UT. I can say that getting out of the big cities has made me fall in love with the car again as nothing like a fun windy road!! I was in HS and one weekend one of my family members was looking at cars at a Nissan dealer at the time, this was around 1996. They had a pearl white 300z TT, thing looked so clean!!! I also sat in the FD Rx7, a midnight blue one at a dealership, but I was in HS and a poor kid, but there was just something about those 90's sports cars
@@07wrxtr1 I've had 2 370z and a 350 myself (like I said, a lot of Nissans). Also had a Stealth R/T Turbo back in the mid 90s as well. Never did get the Supra or Rx7, but I drove an Rx7 a lot as my roommate had one, a 94, my Stealth was a 95 (last year IIRC, or at least the last model). I wish I'd kept my last 370, it was my wife's car mostly, but I should have kept it and boosted it, as it was a really good example, built on a Monday I guess.
@@Gman-109 Yeah I love mine, but I bought it when I Lived in the city, with a ton of stop/go traffic, and having owned a wrx with an aftermarket clutch in years past, I went for the 7AT, so the next Z will be the 6-Speed for sure!! Mine gets an obscene amount of attention, I don't know why, I just keep it extremely clean/ceramic coated, and it sticks out like a sore thumb living in a desert/jeep driving area; However, it's just absolute stupid amounts of fun now that I can hit so many roads without a ton of people on them, really, you're just looking out for deer when heading back in the evenings, otherwise I have fallen back in love with the car, and when it snows here, that's what freezers full of meat are for!
I agree. Nissan hit it out of the park with the 300zx. Hopefully the “400”zx can bring back some of the magic of the 300zx, but that going to be a tall order.
@@rickhunter6513 the 400zx is pretty much a 370'z with a redsport motor and a more aggressive auto trans, hopefully that upgrade makes a huge difference in the experience. I still love my Z34 alot but I might trade it if the 400z is THAT much better.
I graduated high school in 1991. My best friend and I would frequently go to the Nissan dealership on the weekend after it closed and drool over this exact version of the Z. Was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen. I especially remember how cool the passenger area was and how the dash wrapped into the footwell. Congrats!
The Z32 is and has always been my favorite Japanese sportscar of the 90's. And you just made me NEED one! It just looks more and more beautiful every time I see one on a video or photo and more and more desireable everytime I see anyone talking about it!
I too bought my '91 300ZX TT in Billings, MT where I grew up. I have owned her for 20 years and multiple stages of modifications. Still looks and feels new with only 80k miles. Mine dynos at over 400hp at the rear wheels and is 100% daily drivable. Nice find!
Anybody remember the 300ZX Twin Turbo Super Bowl commercial? The Ridley Scott one? I know it's floating around RU-vid, somewhere. Still gives me goosebumps. One of the cleanest car designs ever...
I owned a 300ZX Twin Turbo when it first came out; it remains to this day my favorite car that I've owned. White, red leather, manual, auto climate control, with the wheels painted Miami Vice White to match the car. (It replaced a 2nd Gen RX-7 Turbo II, which was fun, but harsh). The Z was very fast, smooth, great handling, and amazing presence. It was what the Corvette of the day tried to be. I'm so glad that you've got one to enjoy, Todd... and I'm more than a little bit jealous.
Congrats on the buy !!!! The fact that majority of the Z is stock is awesome. 👌 I would watch almost every day when you guys uploaded "300zx Review" and "Nissan 300zx TT (Zcars Part 1)" back in the day. I wanted one so bad that watching those videos would get me hyped up for the Z32. Then in March 2011 i ended up getting a 1993 300ZX NA. Which i still have but making more power since it's TT and on E85 ! Got couple videos of it on my channel. It's been a journey just like any car project lol But again, congrats on the car and welcome back to the Z32 world !
Great write up, beautiful scenery. I would love to have the 300 ZX tt as a part of the holy quartet (Supra Turbo, RX7 tt and Mitsu 3000 GT VR4). Good luck with your car, I hope you keep it for a long time and get thousands of miles worth of smiles.
Congrats on the Z. Timeless design. You’ve got all the great options. I’m in California and this car would have sold for $5000-$8000 more. In 1993 I tried so hard to work out a deal on this car but no dealer would budge. I remember it as the one of the fastest cars I had driven for that era. Because of the lack of a 6 speed, I ended up getting a Corvette but I should have stayed true to my heart and gotten the Z. It’s a diamond….
I’ve been casually keeping an eye out for one in CA for the last few years, and anyone selling a low mileage, clean title, manual, t-top,TT model will want BaT type money for it. “I bet I can get $60k for this on BaT...”
What are you talking about? Gimme $30k I’ll find you 10 of these with under 70k miles, I’ve got some saved rn. Long as you let me pocket the plenty I’d be able to keep. In fact I’ve got a very clean one with 97k miles saved for $10.5k… no clue what you’re talking about my friend.
@@stephen3164 Jesus… look at their last sales on BaT. The TTs fetch 20-30k. The non TTs (arguably the better model) get $10-18k. I don’t get why people talk about stuff they have no knowledge on… like you two just did.
@@edkar7604 - specifically, the combination in the video: TT, t-top, manual, clean title, low mileage - owners around LA selling that combination act like they have a rare unicorn for sale, and price their car to the moon. There’s currently a “rare color” TT, T-top, Auto, 177k mile car on LA Craigslist priced at $39k. There’s also a salvage title, auto, high mileage car at “only” $7k. There is one clean NA though that is surprisingly priced right at $10k, assuming it doesn’t have undisclosed issues.
@@edkar7604 Following up a year later, I'm seeing super clean NA's priced at > $20k. I never thought I'd see the day that they cost this much. Four year old NA's were priced like this in the late 90's. :-)
More for the "wow" tech list (maybe not wow today but it was when the 300zx came out): Dual Throttle bodies, long individual intake runners, variable cam timing, dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder, multi-link rear AND FRONT suspensions, variable assist power steering. All of these features were not available on the 1989 and earlier 300zx.
There's usually a huge gap between what the world tells you you should want and what will actually make you happy. Finding the right car is a special thing that most people won't experience. Congratulations!
One of my favorite cars from the 90's. I had a 1992 NA model, white with tan leather. Such a great car and I really wish I would have never sold it. Prices are creeping up on these, especially the twin turbo. Todd is one lucky SOB!
So glad to see this episode! I was listening again to an older podcast the other day (because why not) and Todd mentioned how much he'd love to have another 300ZX again. Well done sir, enjoy it
Best attainable performance car of the 90s!!! Supra is overrated and came late to the party. NSX is arguably better but it was supposed to be, and is/was out of reach for most. Rx7 is the most beautiful but is a pile and hobbit sized. I'm not bothering to justify the 3000gt, lol. And the skylines are overrated shitboxes like early WRXs and only are hyped here cause forbidden fruit. Viva la Z32. Can't wait for a year of content with this gorgeous car
When you mentioned “T tops are awesome on this car” it hit home and brought back fond memories of my 1987 red Nissan Pulsar, no 300ZX but it was to me a blast to drive.
Great car I had one before, a 1990 Z32 TT in white (it was an automatic). The problem is that maintenance is very expensive and very few mechanics know how to fix them (don't try the Nissan dealerships, they have no clue on how to fix them). I'm looking to buy a Z32 NA 2+2 as they are more comfortable and relatively easier to maintain.
I’ve always loved the 300zx TT and was looking to buy one several years ago. However, throughout all my research, I found this car was an absolute maintenance queen. That tight engine space is a real bitch to work on. It scared me off because I knew trying to find someone to work on it was going to be tough and very expensive. Still wish I had a Z though ….
Yeah you almost have to have the car shipped to a reputable shop somewhere in the country. Just certain areas have few experts. I can say that East Valley in Mesa AZ and Red Rock in G Junction have done a great job on my 370z, but obviously that's apples / oranges vs. the much nicer/older classic. There are Nissan dealers to be avoided, that have super high turnover and for critical work, avoid at all cost.
In 1992 I started my freshman year at a small university in my hometown of Antigonish Nova Scotia Canada! Antigonish was about as far away from sports cars as just about anywhere, so when a student from the big city of Toronto pulled up to the library in a bright yellow 300zx twin turbo it was like a shot of lightning. I was instantly in love! That set me on a 30 year love affair with a car that I have never even driven, let alone owned. I have vowed to own one someday but with kids and life in general the time has never been right. This video is exactly what I needed to see, someone falling in love with their car crush all over again. Beautifully shot, and presented. Extremely well done!
Two great car choices for going back to the roots and avoiding "advances" in technology of the new cars. I have owned two twin turbo 300zx cars. I loved the car so much that I bought it twice. I hope you didn't sell the Lotus 🤠...Cheers
I owned a base 1996 3000GT for 8 years and loved that car so much. I would love to find a low mileage VR4 Spyder for a reasonable price to re-live the experience with all the bells and whistles. After looking around when the scamdemic began I decided to buy a new 718 Cayman instead. It's scheduled to arrive in 80 days or so. Oh well.
@@billschlafly4107 I'm sure you will have plenty of fun on some of your fave roads til you catch up to those Subaru Outback drivers that love under steer and going 15mph slower around every turn
I'm a total Z fan, own several, but the 300 is my favorite. Still love the styling above all the models. Same lust when in high school. Sold mine 15 years ago and maybe it's time to find another too
Had a girlfriend buy one of those. Think it was maybe a year newer than yours. It was very smooth and easy to drive. Was reliable also. Disagree it was closer to 1961 cars. Power steer , brakes. Anti lock brakes , fuel injection, engine management , day night mirrors , self cancel turn signals, disc brakes all around. Two adj tie rod ends, 5 speed trans Trust me todd.. I o owned and wrenched on cars from the 1960's and honestly I dont think your old enough to remember all the improvements your car has. Fuel injection alone is amazing.
I feel your excitement. I sold my 90 NA (black, T Tops 5 spd) 4 years ago after 27 years of ownership at 81 000 kms (50 miles) and still feel that I made a mistake. My 2016 370z Roadster is nice, but not quite the same.
Found this channel because of your old 300zx and a review of a white one. So glad to see a Z32 back on the channel after several years! And you look so happy Todd that the feeling flows to the audience ☺
This is by far my favorite episode! I worked at McDonalds for 2 years to save for 1990 2+2 300zx. I loved it. Everybody at my high school envied me. Afterward, I purchased a Miata (1994) because 300zx engine failed (my fault). I am now at later point in my life that I want a 90s car, and I want them both! BOTH! I can't decide. The 90s was an awesome decade if you loved Japanese cars.
TODD. You're not a crazy person. I have a 300zx, a 533i, an is300, a Suburban, AND I'm actively shopping for an RX-8. And that doesn't count my wife's car. You're not crazy. You're happy and you know it.
While I genuinely appreciate you guys giving the 300ZX TT some well-deserved recognition, please don't give it TOO much recognition as I haven't bought one yet!
Congratulations, Todd! I bought a 1995 Slicktop Z32 from Seattle, WA then drove it home to Warner Robins, GA - roughly 3 years ago!!! I can relate to your story. That car was the best cross-country roadster I've been in. The memories you and your son will have from that trip will last a lifetime. Loved the video. :D
Great video--and great scenery! I remember taking my 280ZX Turbo into the dealership for some work and they handed me the keys to a new 300ZX (non-Turbo) for a test drive. It was a brilliant car and I am sure that the Twin Turbo is so much better. One of Japan's best-looking cars and a real keeper. And as to buying a car on the other side of the country--I did this with my C6 Corvette and had a five day trip across Canada, my first time actually driving a Corvette. 2 1/2 times the horsepower of my 280ZX Turbo, and uses half the gas so there is something to be said for progress!
Hicas (HIGH-KISS) system, very impressive for its time and forgot that this car had it! Currently looking to buy a 300ZX TT here in Canada as a weekend car. Childhood dream will come true this summer. Thanks for the video!
What a great trip to take with your son, making memories as well as being surefire way to turn him into a car nut later in life. I own both a ZX and a 928 so I am very interested in these long-term reviews!
I personally always wanted a MK IV Supra. The Supra vs the 300ZX was a great debate between myself and a friend in HS. But the Supra has ended up being highly desirable. To get one that's post 1995, twin turbo, and 6 speed, - in good shape - is hard to find for less than $35k. And more or less downright impossible for under $30k. High mileage or with problems? Sure you can find them for less than that, but then you're talking about a project car at that point. I've more or less given up the idea of ever owning one. It just feels like it makes more sense to me to buy an MX5. Get that beautiful convertible hardtop, 180HP (which is plenty in a car that small/light) and call it a day.
I definitely wanted one of these cars and they were highly undervalued for some time. Over the last 18 months the price has come up significantly. So, I ended up with a 1992 3000GT VR4 in nearly identical condition to this 300zx - 73k miles, almost completely original besides a BOV, and also red. I love the car and am genuinely happy with it. Would be a great vehicle to visit with this channel as well!
90's will go down in history as one of the greatest decades in american history. (along with the 50's). And the 300zx one of the best looking cars out of the 90's.
"I just bought this car, I'm a crazy person. What am I doing?" Sounds like a skit from Kevin Meany the comedian. :-) Yes you are crazy, ain't it great? :-) It's way to boring to be sane. Enjoy your new toy. Hard to find one of these that hasn't been hacked but that is why you have to pay the 'big bucks' for a good one. ...Worth it though.
I have the same car. I've owned it for over 20 years. We've had some up and downs. In 2010 i replaced the engine with a 1995 jdm engine with the new style injectors. I also did some other mods. Anyway, thanks for showing the z some love!
Man, when he says "I just bought this car today. This is my car now!" I feel that so much. Even after several years of owning my dream car, I still get this feeling. I own this. This is my car. This is really mine. Ah, such a great feeling.
Todd you look so happy driving this car. I honestly think you may enjoy it more than the Elise based off your history and expressions in reflecting on the nostalgia! Of course, now you have both!
I have a 1991 TT with an auto trans. Just needs a couple little things but prob going to sell it. All my friends keep saying keep it. Im not sure what to do. It has 103k. Anyone know what its worth aprox?
You got a killer car!! I think you picked a better car. Pauls Porsche in this series is so ugly, I'm surprised that the designer wouldn't have had better car taste. Todd, you have better car taste, you have a Lotus and a 300zx twin turbo good for you! I'm excited to see where this series goes, keep on making great videos. I will also listen to your podcast!
This 300zx looks better than most sport cars coming out today. Classic design and it still turns heads. So much better than the new "Z"... Wish Nissan made a new version of this car!
I think the Z32 TT may just be my all-time favorite of the epic 90’s Japanese sports cars! It’s probably because when I was growing up my uncle had a mint 260Z and he took me to the Atlanta car show in 1991 where they had a then-brand new 300ZX that we got to sit in and lust after (as well as the old IMSA race car). I’ve absolutely loved the Z32 ever since and hope to some day find a mint and stock example for myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in love with the Supra Turbo, RX7, NSX and 3000GT VR4 as well, but my very favorite remains the Z32. Such an epic design!
“Discover the car on the way home” I was terrified of that until I did it with my first 911. Very cool car. Friends of mine had these. I prefer the 928, though🙂
Nice find! The unmolested cars are getting so hard to find. Most Z32's now have the god awful body or wide body kits with all kids of tacky decals and tuner mods.
I remember delivering one in the exact spec over 30 years ago and a 928 gt in the same week. I still can't make my mind up even now which one drove better. Nice car .
300zx cupholder protip: Take the ashtray out and you can put a small or medium size drink in there. But if it's medium size you have to use only 1st 3rd and 5th gears.
Nothing looks quite as cool as a 300zx from outside as it drives. Well, nothing short of a supercar. That's the worst part about driving one, you don't get to see it while you drive it.
Thank you so much for this video! Dude, you are driving my car! I owned a 1991 300zx TT from 1996 to 2016 - red, with the Stillen Level 2 upgrades that included an HKS exhaust system and intake, as well as the hot chip that gave it an estimated 400 horsepower. And, that was PLENTY, for me! That car was a blast to drive. Like you, I would drive for a couple of hours north from Atlanta to drive in the Appalachian mountains on twisting curvy roads. I would generally stay in third gear at about 4000-4500 RPM so I had those turbos on tap whenever I wanted them. That had been my dream car from the time I saw one - a black 1990 twin turbo in the fall of 1989. I knew I would have one, eventually - and, I got mine in 1996 with 59,000 miles on it for $17,500.00. The original owner still had the sticker from when he purchased it from the dealer for $36,580.00. But, like you said, life happens and things change, and I sold it with 98,000 miles on it in April of 2016 - and, bought a Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid. I really needed the 60 mpg and more cargo space for my job. I would like to think I would buy another one - but, realistically, that's not likely to happen. But, I will always remember that car. It's still my favorite car of all time, regardless of price! And, I'm sure you will enjoy yours for as long as you choose to own it!
The 300ZX won so many accolades during its production. I’m sure you could look up specifics, but I remember it being on Car and Driver’s Top 10 list maybe every single year it was sold in North America. They always praised the ergonomics and said it had the most ergonomic interior of all JDM sports cars and overall excelled in that regard.
Well done. I have similar history with a 1998 3000GT SL (the NA middle tier). I always dreamed of the VR-4 twin turbo..,but to think car ,which was God level to me at 16, is now 100hp less than my M2 is insane.
I had one of those I'd detail back when I was in High school.... lady would let me pull up in my $800 POS Mazda, and drive away with her 3000gt... I had no business driving that car, but I sure enjoyed the 4 mile drive to the house! I remember it was the first car that had some TQ steer when getting on it, it was the SL (the one in the middle with around 300hp, but no the VR4). Fun car!!
loved my 1990 (?) red manual 300zx TT. only difference between the one shown here is the absence of that little hood ornament. i think they came out on the next year's model. the t-tops were magnificent. and yes, it was fast...in 1990. i think'll cruise on over to autotrader now, and see what they've got available....
