I bought my first 928 in September 1994. I was turning 23 at the end of the month and it was a birthday gift to myself. It was a grey market 928s Euro grey market car. It was awesome. So fast, no issues. Ever since I saw Risky Business it was the only car I wanted. I sold it 4 years later to a colleague and he still has it, as far as I know. I immediately regretted selling it and I replaced it in October 1999 with an American version, automatic. What a disappointment that car was. It felt ponderous, slow, and it was ultimately unreliable due to all of the common electrical issues. So, I've seen both sides of ownership. To me, this car is just sexy, and like a sexy woman, she's either easy going, low maintenance, ready to travel, or a pain in the butt, high maintenance entity that doesn't want to go anywhere. You bought the manual and I wish all the best for you!

That car is just pretty. The beautiful sleek front end, the squared off wheel wells and that plump posterior that sits up just a tad too high. I love it.

In the '80's I was in a partnership in a condo at Mammoth Mountain CA. One of my partners had a 928 and many trips between L.A. and Mammoth were driven in that 928. I got to drive it on many occasions and it was a fabulous experience. A true GT automobile in its element rocketing up Hwy 395 along the Eastern Sierra!

I remember seeing a red 1977 928 on the cover of Road and Track magazine. Always wanted to drive one. So I bought a 1979 928 9 years ago for $6,000 US dollars. A friend of mine owned an '84 S in Quartz Gray Metallic when I was in high school that same year and that's where I caught the bug. My parents actually bought it from him when he sold it so I had the chance to take it for a weekend once. I keep trying to convince myself that I don't want one now..... but the argument is leaning very much in favor of my garage becoming the forever-home for one sooner than later. My dad has always been a Mopar muscle guy, but also had a soft spot for Ze Germans due to Maico dirt bikes, a Ghia, and a 914. One day he was in an auto junk yard looking for something or other, when he sees a set of enormous V8 cylinder heads. They look like 426 Hemi heads except they're aluminum, overhead cam, the casting is flawless, and the enormous ports are tall and perfectly shaped like a Top Fuel car. Trying to figure out what kind of insane race car these are from, he eventually finds the word Porsche in the casting. These are 928 heads. Not a race car. They just made their engine a work of art because that's what Porsche does. 40 years later, he never forgot that, and hasn't let me forget it either (clearly).

You’re not nuts. And when you buy another car, you still won’t be nuts. If it makes you happy just to look at it in your driveway, you aren’t nuts. I worried before I had so many cars that adding cars would devalue the other ones I owned, or that the reason I wanted so many cars was that the spark of joy I got from them faded with time. But it hasn’t. Nothing about owning more cars has taken away my appreciation of the cars I had before, it’s enhanced it. The joy hasn’t worn off from any of them, there’s just more of it. Here’s a quick exercise. Add up what you paid for all the cars you own, and then look at how many cars there are out there for that kind of money where you wouldn’t think the person who bought it was nuts. Where you’d see that car and it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow, where if you found a friend or a family member dailying it you wouldn’t think they were nuts or irresponsible. Dividing your money up among multiple cars is a better strategy than buying one really nice one, if you’re a car nut

944 is not a sports car per se it’s a pocket grand tourer, a 928 for the common man. You set up your suspension and tires for that and they become more interesting to drive. A 944 especially the sixteen valves is very comfortable cruising at 100 mph.

I agree; the 928 is certainly a superior Porsche when compared to the 944. I love the growl of it V8 especially with aftermarket exhaust. The 944 holds a special place for me in that my mother owned one when my brother and I were young. Luckily since I was older/taller, I wasn’t forced to sit in the tiny backseats.

I learned to drive on a 1979 928 and had my first track day in it (late 90s). My dad owned it since new and it finally fully died in 2004. He currently owns 11 Porsches and this one was his first and still his favorite. I remember when I was around 5y/o, we lived next to the regional airport in Waco, TX. We used to go to the airport and get "jet gas" (it was just 100 something octane), but when you are a kid, it was the coolest thing ever. I'm nearly 40 now and trying to pass along that love to my 6y/o. My stepmom and I have been working for about a year to source a 928 in the same Prussian Blue (it was baby blue) to give to my dad.

Considering we live in the age of multi-link rear suspensions, I think the benefit of the weissach axles is hard to understand for most people. Cars that get lift-off oversteer aren’t really sold anymore. A weissach axle is essentially a modified semi-trailing arm suspension. Semi-trailing arms are what you’d find on BMW’s of the 70’s and 80’s, the super beetle, the 911 (pre 993), the 914, as well as many others. Semi-trailing arms were much simpler to construct and engineer without the help of computers compared to multi-link rear suspension. While it did have a tendency to induce oversteer upon a throttle lift mid corner, it was far superior to the system it replaced, the swing axle. Nevertheless, as cars got faster and more capable, the stability limitations of the technology caused designers to switch to multi-link and double wishbone setups (the latter of which tends to intrude quite a lot into the passenger compartment.) Remember, porsche was originally planning the 928 to replace the 911. Deciding to build both was a bold move since they had a very limited budget back then. The 924 was the only other front engine, rear transaxle car they made, and it used semi trailing arms. Rather than re-engineer a whole new rear end to use double wishbone or multilink suspension (which would have been hard with the transmission in the way), Porsche made a slight modification to the design. It looks similar to semi trailing arms with a single triangular shaped control arm that rigidly holds the hub, but the triangle is broken into three parts that have a limited range of flexibility. The geometry was set up so that the cornering forces on the suspension would counteract the movement of the wheel that caused lift off oversteer. It’s essentially one semi-rigid suspension link that is just the right amount of bendy on purpose. Ingenious. The 2nd gen Mazda RX-7 took a similar approach inspired by the 928, beginning with a semi-trailing arm suspension, adding some flexibility at the hub and adding another lateral link to the subframe to achieve a similar effect, but the RX-7 wasn’t a transaxle car and the setup was no where near as odd or sophisticated. It is unclear whether or not that strategy would have worked for the 928, but one thing is for certain. A mechanic won’t geek out over the RX-7’s rear suspension when it goes up on the lift. But if they’ve never seen under a 928, they’re going to be fascinated. There’s nothing quite like it.

I bought 1978 grey market 928 manual one week before I got married. It was my last hurrah as a single guy. It turned out to be a disaster car because of what was done to it to make it U.S. legal. Started on fire twice. Emergency brake didn’t work along with clutch wouldn’t hold. So it rolled away several times. On our honeymoon in the rain we had to push start it because the battery died. Yes, my new wife was pushing my trophy car in the rain yelling every cuss word you can think of. Oh and together we had 4 kids. But I had to have that car. 3 months later it was gone. I lost a lot of money and We got a Mitsubishi mini-van. So with all this said here I am , 35 years later, wanting to buy that car again. Just the exhaust sound is so amazing. Thanks for video. It brought back great memories.

They’ve been dismissed I think by the general community as a period car, have somewhat of a bad wrap as a result of some of them not having been properly serviced over the years. Also reoccurring water cooler comment is they are a pita to work on (most likely includes those which have not been maintained). I found my 84s manual platinum metallic/burgundy a few years back for $5k. She needed a head gasket as she was slowly losing coolant, and a little love cleaning her up. No biggie to fix. 52k miles on her, an absolute joy to drive. I picked up a euro spec motor, headers and a lighter flywheel I’m almost finished putting in for a solid 100 more hp and crates the original engine), can’t comment on that one yet :) These cars are able to evade the ridiculous used car inflation mostly due to the aforementioned reasons. Parts availability has thinned a little over the years, but, if you find one in the teens tops and know of its history, shows a passing inspection/compression/leakdown/etc., go for it.

There I was, 17 years old doing over 150mph (safely) down I-60 west. The motor always seemed unfazed. What a thrill. I recently bought a Euro ‘84 5sp. I’m accumulating as many 5 speeds as I can honestly. And spare transmissions for the 5 speeds. Going forward, the transmissions will be the hardest to source.

The 928 was unobtanium for me, and still is my personal halo car. I had an opportunity to buy one, about 20 years ago, but wasn't financially secure enough to afford the repair/maintenance costs along with maintaining a growing family. I had to drop the pursuit of the car. But after 20+ years, I have gotten to a place where I can buy and keep finer vehicles without worrying too much about how much of a hit to the wallet is this going to be. Congrats Paul! I will watch with great anticipation for new videos on this car and your experience with it. You got a nice one. It really is a piece of artistic sculpture that can go 120 mph without a problem. Enjoy!

That does look good, and I'm glad you're going to drive it and enjoy it. The colour with the wheels looks awesome! I drove just a few miles in a late 5 litre car once, and passengered in an early car several times - they do have a special ride and feel to them at speed. It's quite soft but it never feels like it's wallowing or letting go of the road, and I've not really felt a car like that since. The 5 litre engine, and the later tail lights for me made it that bit more modern, sexy and fast, but even in the early cars that solidity at speed was always there.

In 1986 I "thought" I wanted 944. Then I drove a 928......OH MY! I was hooked and bought 1983 and loved it for 20 years.

It is amazing how They can design such timeless cars, the 911, 928 and I think the 944 still looks current.

My first new car was an Acura integra gsr, I did some minor mechanical upgrades. I loved that car, put 130k miles on it with zero issues. Since then, I've had a twin turbo setup G35, ferrari 430, a fully Dinan setup e90 335, dinan 550, f80 m4 and now have a highly modified m235 and a tesla model 3. I haven't thought much of the integra until this summer, I drove one that only had 44k miles, not 1 creek/rattle. It sung above 8k rpm. It's not fast but was enagaing in a way, modern cars can't match. Fun driving a slow car fast. Not I'm lusting over them and have been shopping for one, I can't find one. First loves are hard to forget. Great find!

A friend of mine loves these cars. Ever since he saw Tom Cruise take his 'dad's' 928 in 'Risky Business', he said he fell in love with it. I am hoping he'll get one once he retires and learn to enjoy owning something so amazing.

I LOVE the Porsche 928!! Always have, and it's probably my second favorite behind the 911. Such unique styling yet still Porsche. Also, it reminds me of Inspector Gadget's vehicle when in speed mode (which is apt considering its age). That color combination is gorgeous. Very jealous!

I think this generation of Panamera is the closest we will ever get to a new 928. Unless GT cars suddenly become popular again, the refined Panamera, with a much more sloped rear end, looks much more GT car like than it's first version.

Though I'm not a "Porsche Guy", I do feel that this is a design that has aged extremely well. I was in grade school when Mattel first released the Hot Wheels series of cars in the late 60's and I owned a good number of those little cars. Looking at this 928, I can't help but think that one or more of the people responsible for the design of this car spent some time admiring some of those early original Mattel designs, and I mean that in a complimentary way. I'm not at all surprised to learn that you're having a blast revisiting this car. Enjoy!

I absolutely love you’ve got your 928 Paul. It is absolutely stunning in that color. I much prefer the look of the rear end on the later models like your original 928, but the color more than makes up for it. And hey, I’m mr I don’t need this but I want it. My Lexus IS300 can do basically everything I need a car to do. That hasn’t stopped me from keeping my 300zx, or buying a 533i, and I’m very seriously looking into an RX-8 right now. For guys like us, “I want it” is more than enough reason. Yasher Koach, Mazel Tov, well bought, drive it in good health and happiness!

Still a great looking car today. I took a ride in one when I was about 15 years old (I’m 47 now). A woman drove it and drove it well. It was a manual. At the time it was by far the fastest car I’d ever been in, and I remember it scaring me a little. But it was awesome. That’s my only first-hand memory of the 928. But I’ll never forget it. I’ve always had a love affair with them ever since.

928s get into your blood. In 2019 I bought an 87 S4 auto that had 1.5 feet in the grave. Color was Felsengrun - Granate Green Metallic, a beautiful and rare color. It sat outside in IA for at least 8 yrs. Didn't run. My plan was to Wheeler Dealer it - get it running, fix a few things, then sell it on. Which I did, but I never got to really enjoy the car. 2 yrs ago I sold my house and had some $$$ left over after buying my new house, so I started looking for another shark. Found an 89 S4 5 spd that wasn't running but was in super nice shape. I've been fixing this one since and enjoying the experience. It too will eventually be a Wheeler Dealer car, but not for another cpl yrs. They are such cool cars.

As a 1985 S2 Manual owner here in the UK - I loved this Video.... you nailed as a good buy when you said it was driven regularly... that is the absolute key, they need to be driven or the gremlins start to appear ... but can be so much fun to maintain ... and the engine sound is just soulful 😀👍
