I bought the S85 based BMW M5 with the terrible V10 Engine and SMG Transmission with 160,000 miles. The auction listed it with NO Mechanical damage. Upon first startup I heard an interesting noise, which I would definitely consider some sort of mechanical damage so I took it to Eurocharged Orlando to get it diagnosed. Here's what they said...

i recommend rod bearings on these at 80k miles. Ive done several in this range and not a single one i thought "oh those didnt need to be done". If you catch them before they start knocking its not that bad cost wise, once it starts knocking you probably have a damaged crank which will exponentially increase the cost.
@alexburke1899
@alexburke1899 3 месяца назад
That’s like a $1300-$1500 kit just for parts and most people can’t do that job themselves if we’re honest about it, so it’s basically a $2500 job with labor and that’s pretty expensive for a 80k mile maintenance. This car is meant for people with money, and the people with enough money to drive and maintain these cars would probably just buy something newer and more reliable.

I'm new to BMW, just bought my first ever bmw two weeks ago. Why are people saying it's crazy for them to go 160k miles? Are they referring to just the M5 or bmw in general? The one I bought (an E90 320D from 2005) has gone 220k miles and it just got its yearly check with no mechanical issues. My reverse lights aren't working but other than that it runs just fine. Am I in for a bad time?

@@F30_Hellion I guess everybody has a relative definition of «no mechanical issues». I once stepped inside a car similar to yours, 2008 325i, and the driver thought his car was in perfect conditions; I noticed the engine was making a terrible valve/camshaft noise, the rear suspensions were done, the transmission was jerky and there was a very noticeable rolling vibration. Not all BMW are bad, but they are all very reliable money pits.

@F30_Hellion 3 года назад
@@jamesjames3525 No I did not I don't have access to that kind of stuff. The only thing I had to go after was the receipts from the shop that changed/fixed stuff. 3 years ago they changed parts for about $3000. New turbo, waterpump, transmission and lots of other stuff I can't translate. And earlier this year they bought brand new breakdiscs and pads along with the standard service and yearly check up (the paper was clean). Obviously the car will not last me a lifetime but I bought it for $2700 and its been driven by an old lady for like 7 years and been serviced at BMW at the correct intervals. If I can drive it for two years without any major issues I honestly think I got my moneys worth. I'm not very well off and a car like this has been my dream for years and I'm so happy with it. If shit comes up I'll deal with it because that's what you get with cars of this age and for this price. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Sam, may I suggest not disconnecting the trailer when you load or unload a car... The reason is it's more stable with the trailer connected to the hitch... Also, keep the pedestal/jack at the tongue lowered and touching the ground, this will keep it from bouncing as much. It's safer to do it this way. Have your tow vehicle e-brake set.
@RenaultFixChannel
@RenaultFixChannel 3 года назад
Yes, anything wrong with vanos system can and will cause misfire, these engines have double vanos that means that it varies the time of injection and exhaust, if anything is wrong it will cause limb mode, oil pressure - it can be a sensor knowing e60 electronics or vanos system in general can be clogged due to irregular oil changes, in this case you are looking at vanos and timing job or it can be a vanos pump, look also for error codes regarding vanos solenoids but my strong guess would be vanos pump what is not so cheap USED... because in general someone would do a vanos and timing job that's pretty cheap. These pumps are often failure too... in this case you are looking at pump and timing job if your 4 vanos gears are fine, in my country its 100$ a piece and 800$ for a pump
@RenaultFixChannel
@RenaultFixChannel 3 года назад
plus rod bearing job it will be a engine out job, it will take a lot of money to do it plus timing job and vanos fix, its not worth it, bmw are complex anything that you have to do costs more because 1. there's more stuff to fix 2.theres more things to take apart

I had a 2006 M6 with the same V10 and DSG transmission, main difference, mine only had 40,000km on it when I bought it in 2014. It needed nothing and was a thrill to drive. I also paid a lot for it.
@geraldcole3315
@geraldcole3315 3 года назад
My 2006 M5 had a oil pump failure that sends oil to the Vanos, long story short, oil was full of metal and BMW wanted $24,500 to basically rebuild the entire engine. My expensive warranty that I purchased thru the dealer (metrolina auto group) refused to cover the repairs. I could not cover that cost, so metrolina took the car back and found me an E92 M3 with over 100k miles to replace it. In hind sight, that M5 was amazing and so much fun to drive, I regret trading it, and should have found a way to rebuild or replace that engine with a dinan. With an after market exhaust and top speed limiter delete, it was like driving a heavier and more comfortable F1 car. I know this is tmi of my story, but that car could definitely be saved.

Next, take out all of your vanos solenoids, clean them with a wire brush, but first put them in gasoline and then clean them. If you want use something like a digreaser. And do your rod bearings. King Bearings is what I have on my 5.5l stroker. Use Redline 5-50 oil You might have a lot of scaring on your walls, just depends. Might as well just do a 5.2L stroker if its bad enough.

Hi! v10 guy here. I would first like to point out that the issues you pointed out with the Vanos system are accurate, and chances are the very line youre talking about is more than likely going to be that cars demise if it isn't fixed. The random cylinder misfires however will NOT be part of that issue. The low fuel will definitely do that in those high pressure systems. A tiny air bubble will freak out the fuel injection. There is a very good chance those injectors are sticking a little because of the sitting it has done. like most cars today, fuel injection systems dont like to sit. very expensive car to fix, the entire driveline is a total pain in the ass. I've fixed many, and im sure ill fix many more.
@copper4663
@copper4663 3 года назад
I would like to add that i read a good point about the misfires. Because of the heavy adjusted timing, there's a good chance it would throw a random misfire code, but ive never seen it single out specific cylinders like you have there. I think you have a mix of issues. even my 91 750il with its big lazy v12 will do random things when the fuel level is extra low.
