Don't feel bad about spending $1300 on a CR500 motor. Especially an 86. They are disappearing fast. Sure whole clapped out bikes pop up now and then for $1500. Or someone knows Joe down the street has one in his back yard for $1000 if you want to drive half way across the country for it. A CR500 motor is as good as the hype. i restored a 85 CR500 and in my opinion it was insanely quick. Enjoy, look forward to your build.

Nice to see the younger generation snapping up the legendary 2 stroke engines and giving them a new life,can’t beat the older bikes.i got my self a wr450f 2016 model,after just one year I sold it,just not the same buzz as a 2 stroke,now I’m back in the market for a 2 stroke,good content.

My cousin had a CR500. He used to keep 3 back fenders at all times. Just about anyone that wanted to ride it would flip over backwards. SOOO MUCH POWER!

1986 team Honda factory CR 500 was mildly rated at 80hp ......stock production bikes 50hp so if you get 60 to 70 hp on a mild port and head swirl with bout 200 psi good pipe and some 118 race fuel I'll be impressed

That engine is a damn good engine and an expensive one. My advice is to TAKE YOUR TIME and that's about it. You're smart enough to do it right given enough time to do so. Good to see you back.

I had the cr500 the last year it was air cooled. To say it was sick fast would be an understatement. Growing up I did exactly what you did, just on a smaller scale. Get you a copy of Dennis Kirk catalog. They have a lot of parts for older bikes. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Yeah it doesn't have power valves but bike with power valves have way more intense and broader power band

I feel like a scared parent and a power wheels build with that engine will give me a heart attack. Either way, do what you love but as safe as reasonably possible. I wish you good luck.

Got an '01 CR500 in my shed. Zero hours. That's an early motor, good work. Couple of hundred hours on the KX500 must admit not much time on the big Honda.

some advice, have a pipe made don't try pipes not made for a 2 stroke. Also leak down test the engine after the rebuild to ensure no air leaks, those are the arch enemy of a 2 stroke and will fry your topend in minutes or less. Otherwise get well soon, great content great channel

So it cost $1325....don't think it's cheap..just my 2 pennyworth........just enjoy....I'm an engine lover myself, and have a few, but I usually have the complete bike as well, and just buy extra engines..........that kind of money u could buy 2 old bikes and enjoy twice as much fun......

Panthera sells new manufactured cases. Just a heads up. Dont go with just a billet clutch basket and hub. Get a steel one (Hinson makes one) and never worry about it again. It will add a miniscule amount of flywheel effect for stall resistance too. I have an '88 CR500 & a '96CR500, and I know what works. For a build, build a CR500AF!

@@VasilyBuilds Hinsons are aluminum, but they do offer a steel one. Im using a steel basket and their forged hub in my '96, and the clutch is smoother and lighter than stock (thats pretty stiff) even with fresh Barnett clutch springs. Will be running the same on my '88.

You should see if Arrow or Akrapovic make exhaust for that. I like 2 strokes because of the power band and wheelies.

I've seen people save worse water pumps. The one I bought was rotted a hole through both intakes and someone jb welded the leak detection hole

Try simple green or purple power in the cases after it's all broken down to clean that gunk we used it at the shop I worked at for all types of cleaning/ degreasing

As for inner components, If you can afford it, Do everything you can afford to do all new ! Seals, bearings, ( of course ) New clutch discs, pressure plate, etc. All coolant components, pumps, etc. new, new, new ! Performance carb, cams, as much professional porting work as you can afford. You have my vote,

The 86 had the magnesium water pump, I believe until 89 they all were. They can be repaired or replaced, better replaced with a newer aluminum unit
