Clicked on this video just as a curiosity about the Comma 3X and Open Pilot but was absolutely shocked to see the small town I used to live in on RU-vid. I basically did a Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the screen meme. My wife told me to comment "How could you just drive by Micah's and not get a Black & White from Morgan". Thanks for the presentation, though. Not sure I'm actually interested in the product but it is fascinating that consumer tech has gotten as sophisticated as (though in combination with) major manufacturer tech.

We have over 15k miles with the comma 3/Open Pilot. It works amazingly well! My wife's parents live around 300 mile away. We got here several times a year. Its been awesome for that trip. I just installed it on my 2020 Explorer Platinum. Love it!

@@ConsumerTechReviewHigh-Speed I think 2021+ is or will be supported shortly. It probably is right now. You have to have copilot 360+ I believe which is lane centering ( not just lane keep assist) and adaptive cruise. If you do it's most likely supported. With my explorer it didn't recognize the car at first but within a few hours they had written a custom fork for my car and it's worked great since.

My wife and I just rented a Tesla on a trip to the Bay area. I loved the torque, but IMO the Comma 3 is a superior experience. When I first installed the Comma (originally a Comma 2, then upgraded to a 3) my wife was skeptical. She now says she never wants a car that doesn't support this system.

@@Steam-Player all 21 Camrys have TSS 2.5+ which is the newest version not including some 23/24s with TSS 3.0. As long as it has TSS 2.0 or above it should be fine, but the commenter mentioned some being encrypted which I hadn’t heard before so that would Be worth investigating.

I've had mine for about a year now (VW Arteon). For those deciding whether it's worth it or not, trust me it is. I drove to Florida and back recently from Ohio and it drove 95 percent of the way there and back.

Hi, I also have an Arteon and am interested in openpilot. Can you tell me more about the install, how it works with the Arteon, etc.? I can’t find much specific to the Arteon online. Also what year is your car? Thank you.
@Livinghighandwise
@Livinghighandwise 5 месяцев назад
@@jasonbarnes122 My car is a 22' (US version). The physical install is very easy. You mount the unit to the windshield using the included bracket, then you run the J533 cable (sold separately) from the unit to the CAM bus port located under the dash on the driver side on the left side of the steering column. That is essentially it. To control the device, you use the stock cruise control controls on the steering wheel.

Great review, awesome product overall. I have a Rav4 and if you are going highway speeds with the lane assist, it's truly terrifying. The correction is constant and it's very uncomfortable and scary. So when I'm on a highway, I don't touch this feature at all. I used the adaptive cruise control exclusively, but never the lane assist. I literally found out about this product today. It's not even that expensive. I traded in a 2020 Civic Si, and it seems Honda did a much better job their adaptive cruise control in that it detects cars further out and will start breaking a lot sooner if it detects it slowing down, which creates a much more gradual stop. Unfortunately, the Si is stick (which is the reason I bought it, I love driving stick), but at 22 MPH it shuts off automatically. But it's a dream on highways.

You should have gotten a 2019 rx. The experience was a lot better in my 2019 rav4. More steering wheel torque and you notice steering wheel stays completely straight and centered on straight roads. You notice in his 2018 rx, the steering wheel moves left and right trying to stay centered. 2019 is where they updated the Lexus and Toyota sensors. Also, where you see his car almost drifts out of lane on a small curve, the 2019 and up wouldn’t have done that.

Very nice comparison! Some questions related to highway experience: 1. How does OpenPilot handle the case that other vehicles merging into your lane (assume your are on the right lane) on highway? Human usually switch to left lane, slow down, or speed up to let other vehicles in, depending on different scenarios, is OpenPilot smart enough to figure it out? 2. How does OpenPilot handle lane merging on highway? Sometimes 3 lanes can become 2 lanes and you have to merge into adjacent lane. Does OpenPilot do it automatically for you or it requires your control?
@Tuesday76k
@Tuesday76k 11 месяцев назад
1. He will slow down and will keep A safe distance from the vehicle in front and the autopilot will not change lanes because it can't see what is behind him so it's need to do manually 2. autopilot does this automatically Depending on the country and the laws, it can make it confused since it is an American device, which is more unlikely to happen

Merges work perfectly fine in 95% of cases. Once when I was driving in heavy/crazy LA traffic, someone pulled right in front of me, and I wasn't sure if the merging was going to work quickly enough and took over. I think most drivers like to ride the person in front of them's bumper. And the fact that openpilot actually gives space may piss off other drivers. 🤷‍♂ But in general driving is much less stressful, especially for long road trips. In general, people do crazy shit on the road, and one day I think openpilot might just even help police to track them down and stop their bad driving behavior. (Because in general, most people do whatever the hell they want, disregarding the laws, because there is no consequence.)

Cool video! Also I see that you showed off a short drive of dragonpilot for a bit. You'll need to figure out why experimental mode is grayed out in your toggle settings and then you will be able to have it handle traffic lights and stop signs.
@Satmaan23
@Satmaan23 10 месяцев назад
Experimental mode is still very experimental. It doesn't catch every stop sign and sometimes it confuses red lights for stop signs, also rail road crossings for red lights etc. Plus you also need to set a destination and it drives well below the speed limit. It's fun to play around with but not totally viable yet. The toggle is probably grayed out because he didn't enable longitudinal controls. Also, it disables the factory emergency auto brake system.
@RSCats
@RSCats 10 месяцев назад
@@Satmaan23 I was thinking maybe he was not on the right branch. Some cars require you be on the master ci or devel branch on stock OP for that (seems like maybe not applicable to him since he's driving a Lexus and they don't have that footnote in cars.md) so you may be right that he needs to toggle OP longitudinal as well. I had my fair share of OP experimental mode so I know what you mean. And yeah, depending on his car model year, emergency braking could be disabled but I guess you can get a smart DSU for that.
@Satmaan23
@Satmaan23 10 месяцев назад
@RSCats maybe he needs to pay for prime to enable experimental mode.
@RSCats
@RSCats 10 месяцев назад
@@Satmaan23 So paying for comma prime is really for Nav on OP while on stock OP. Experimental mode will work without prime (just won’t navigate)

Lane assist is not designed to be "auto steer" which is a different ADAS all together. Lane assist is designed to alert you when crossing the line and even help you from accidentally doing so when driving manually. Lane assist is not intended to be hands-free.
