So fun fact. The coders of the Ouyaverse got together and modded the server file of Ouya to connect to a community server with almost all the games Ouya offered in the same store layout and interfaces. It is legit a 128 byte file you put on the main folder of the internal storage. Amazing.

I was an early backer of the kickstarter for the ouya. At the time I was in school for computer science and one of my emphasis was in game development. The ouya gave me the opportunity to develop and deploy games to a console like device and it was a great learning experience. This was probably the consoles biggest positive that I feel gets overlooked. As a new developer there was a great lack of tools to learn on and break into the field. The ouya sought to fill that need and I feel that it did. I had a great time playing games like tower fall as well as trying out many of the game demos. It reminded me of the early days of magazine game demo discs. I never experienced any of the issue people talk about and still to this day use it for game streaming to my tv via moonlight and emulators. Which cant be said about much of my other early release tech. (Looking at you Oculus Rift DK1 sitting next to my CV1 and Pimax 5k+) Overall the ouya was a good experience and was a good prototype for an android based tv experience. There is much hate/debate but for many the console was a great success because it fit their needs.

I made a few games for it, which for me was what set it apart from other consoles; it was relatively easy to make a game for it as a hobbyist and see your game in the 'store' being played by people. Sadly after a while the negative sounds became louder and you could feel that the system was not really supported by the company behind it anymore, even though fans still held on for a while.

I loved my Ouya! It was the perfect couch-multiplayer console, even though they could have made it a bit more powerful (I wouldn't have minded paying more), before the Switch took that crown nearly 2 years ago. Also, when the Ouya first released, every game on the store was required to have a free demo available, but since many devs didn't want to code a demo for this console and it limited the amount of games available on the console, they lifted the requirement after a while. Looking at your controller, it seems to still have the original right faceplate. They released a free faceplate replacement that you could request on their website with larger holes for the 4 face buttons. So don't be surprised if they sometimes get stuck under the faceplate when you press them.

somebody got an Ouya for xmas and when they opened the gift said "Oooouyyyaaa" (soulja boy voice) and didn't even open it and made thier mom return it. Now spawn wave has it.

I backed this on Kickstarter within the first few days, but I dropped out before the campaign ended. After watching some interviews with Julie, and seeing nothing really tangible, I felt like this was DOA or vaporware. So glad I did.

I had an Ouya since just after it's retail launch. The Dual Triggers work differently. The TOP Triggers are Digital, and the BOTTOM Triggers are variable input like an old Analog input. It allows you to apply (for example) partial throttle or brake in a racing game for example. The particular one I got was one that had the updated controller that had it's fit and finish improved over the original Kickstarter ones. It works perfectly fine, with no issues. I use 2,600 mAH NiMH AA's in my controller instead of Alkaline Batteries (I don't want to have a Alkaline Battery leak and ruin my only controller). I didn't pay for it on Kickstarter. Instead I bought mine at Best Buy a couple of months after it released (when I knew that the controller issue had been corrected).

I bought the Ouya controllers without the console, someone sold them cheap and I needed a bluetooth gamepad for my android box at the time so went for them. I think I still have one upstairs. Actually like the Ouya controller for use with android games. I didn't get an Ouya console as I'm quite happy to build up my android google library of games knowing I can use them on future android hardware but don't want to buy any games where the company could disappear. My xbox and playstation library is mainly physical games and my digital games are mainly google and steam. I do have a gamestick but the stick has been converted to normal android not playjam.

I love the idea of putting the batteries in the handles. One of the big causes of wrist strain from gaming is the weight on your wrists. Moving the batteries down to the handles moves the center of mass to a more comfortable position.

The OUYA was not as bad as people say. Okay the store was crap an most games were shit but a rooted OUYA with CyanogenMod was an awesome Kodi and emulator box.

I bought one and really liked it, was really easy to get my unity games running on it and the ouya support team ran a live stream every week to help with troubleshooting problems. There were a few really good exclusives for a while, bomb squad, towerfall, amazing frog, no breaks valet, Eliot quest, ittle dew. But then started experiencing the connection issues with controllers (was usually ok in single player games, and was a shame you had to ship them back to ouya to get them reflashed, they were supposed to be open source design so if we should have been able to do updates ourselves with a little technical knowhow but as far as i know the firmware was never released), might try removing the weight. I liked the way the controller felt in the hand and they had custom faceplates in similar colors to the switch dose, If you swapped out the stacks for 360 ones it felt a lot better. The touchpad was new and didint work as intended as all controllers just get combined into 1 mouse input instead of individual pointers. I still the ouya reignighted couch multiplayer at the time, just a shame about there free games stance at the beginning the controller issues.

Thank you for talking about this console. The Ouya is the reason why I skipped the Wii U entirely. Like you said it's a predecessor to the Shield TV and therefore the Switch (same hardware) but it's much more than that. A game like Celeste wouldn't exist without the success of Towerfall which was funded by Ouya Inc. Matt Thorson should have at least mentioned Ouya Inc when he won that award.

I own all the Ouya variants. I love the Ouya it is my first full collection. I wish we had something like the Ouya I would buy games all the time their just to find the game on steam with less reviews sometimes not even enough to have a positive or negative rating. It was a good games platform if you looked but I can tell not many people put in the effort most Ouya I bought still have the plastic on them😂

I honestly thought it was a great idea. I liked the idea of a micro console that was cheap for the Casual Gamer. I got one and I thought the controller felt pretty good and played pretty well for a good while but then a lot of games started dropping from it and there wasn't as much fun stuff to play.

Looking forward to your take on the Nvidia Shield. It's quickly becoming the secret weapon to me and my friends. It's everything we thought the Ouya was going to be and way more. My Shield now runs my living room.

The best thing about the Ouya, was the game "Amazing Frog" It started on Ouya and my daughter and I played that for hours. They've since re-programmed it for Windows and it's developed for steam. A lot of indie game developers cut their teeth on the Ouya store in it's short period. You can still use the console to check and play your games you develop using free software.

Still have my Ouya from Kickstarter, and I used it as my go to little emulation box until I got a raspberry pi. I may look in to using it again.

I used to use an Ouya as a media/Kodi box in my vehicle back in 2013-2016. It worked great as a media player.

I got it the first day it came out, and honestly the first month of the Ouya was the best. Soon after they adopted a pay system, then it became a purchase games system, and the issue is not the controller it is the bluetooth/wifi chipset that is very very very cheap in the ouya and only was suppose to support 1 device with no wifi, and only use 1 connection at a time. As soon as you add a player 2 it becomes almost unplayable, then when you add a player 3 & 4 it is litterally unplayable with any game. Back then pretty much everyone wanted basically a raspberry pi. The connectivity is related only to the ouya console itself. I used the ouya controller after my ouya was closeted with my android tablets and PC.This notion that it was the controller was misinformation spread a far commonly comparing it to usb controllers. I only felt burned in the fact that anytime I took it to parties or events that anytime we played a multiplayer game on it was difficult in explaining that its not the controller and what the actual problems are, because it had the same issue when you connected any wireless controller to it. At the time the ouya controller was the best wireless controller you could get for android. I even made a video on how to connect it to PC and it got a massive amount of views and it has one of the best watch time out of all my almost unwatchable videos. I was not disappointed in the controller other then I broke one when taking it appart. I was not disappointed with the library of games within the first few months, only after when everyone figured out they could just port over shitty phone games with phone controls with the touchpad. I was disappointed how ever in the lack of developer support for new titles, and they would claim ouya supported many different engines they actually didn't, and devs that wanted to make launch games had to delay titles till they actually did and they didn't really the community had to find work arounds for their DRM crapola, and once you got it working it didn't support things like webgl, or opengl es, and oh no some how it runs worse then your native android build running on a nexus 7 which was a year old at that time. Granted my games were crap, but that is exactly what the ouya got flooded with after a few months. It did offer a platform and the audience that stayed with the system were very loyal and many of the devs that stayed made many games that would put them out there and it made a platform for basically the indies that still lived with mom and dad popular which is a good thing. My point being for many people the ouya was crap but for a few it was actually good. I liked it just wish they would have changed out 1 little network chip to a slightly better one, it would have barely costed them a thing and could have saved the system from some of the criticism. Also the DRM was garbage and they should feel bad for having always online DRM that devs had to introduce a work around for.

I actually use my ouya almost every day, there's a reason they still sell for so much on ebay and what not because they are hands down the best device to install kodi on.

Despite popular opinion, I actually enjoyed my ouya. Never had any connection issues with the controller but did have issues with the buttons sticking. The user interface was simple to understand and it was incredibly easy to sideload apk's. Only stopped using it because it was no longer supported.

I bought an Ouya back in the day. They were an early KS gaming success, and the first platform launched on it, I'm pretty sure. I think they succeeded at what they were trying to do in creating an indie gaming platform. It's hard to get the volume unit sales needed to be a huge success. And the timing was bad do to the PS4/XBox One coming out right around the corner. However, it was easy to dev for and a fair number of devs supported it for a while. It had a large number of games available, and I had a good bit of fun with it.

The OUYA wasn't a bad console...for a short while. There were a few issues. Half the players only wanted it for emulation and didn't care for it as a viable platform. Secondly, there was a lack of direction when it came to the console's features and it's future. Lastly, the hardware came out during a time of fast transition. Sure the tech was fine when it first arrived but it was quickly surpassed by other rivals in the same space. Personally, the OUYA was my TellTale console. I had the Walking Dead seasons one and two, Game of Thrones, Wolf Among Us and Tales from the Borderlands all playing on the system. Additionally, I had Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 running for my shooting and racing needs. Everything was great until Android games got to a point where they simply needed beefier hardware, quickly making the OUYA useless. In the end, I'll pay my respects to a console that could have been so much better. "F"

I picked up one, boxed and brand new/unused (still had the protective film on everything) for a mere £20 a couple of years ago. It does actually look nice on my shelf. The size makes it an interesting curio. And if I ever want a 'futuristic looking computer' prop, I can plug it in and it lights up. Though I am considering rooting it. there are a couple of interesting Ouya revival projects at the moment. I have got some older Android games in my account that I'd like to be able to play on a TV - Alien vs Predator Evolution, for example (which was actually on the Ouya as well, but you can't buy anymore as the services have all been closed down for good).

I got an Ouya when it released. I absolutely loved it. The thing about the controllers is that it wasn't actually a design problem, it was just that many of the first run controllers had problems because they were cheaply made. People don't usually realize it, but getting quality products from China is really hard; you need really good connections from people who know how to work with the companies there. Otherwise the manufacturers WILL cut corners any way they can to save/make more money. Manufacturing is a business just like any other. If you got one of the controllers that were made later, they are a MUCH better quality. The only design I really wanted from the controllers was to have start and select buttons. The ergonomics weren't as good as the xbox 360 or xbox one, but they were still better than the Playstation controller that Sony used for twenty years.

The Ouya was pretty cool. As much as people gripe about the controller (I was original backer and never had controller issues), the biggest reason it failed was people wanted Ouya to use the next generation Tegra for more powerful 3D games, but they would not.
