HI Mark, so glad to see you get your dream car. I bought mine in Australia 5 years ago, an '82 380SL in red, the car I wanted as a child. It is a well sorted and reliable machine but certainly no road-racer. It moves in pace with modern traffic but does it's best at highway speeds with the roof down. Anyone who wants to race simply doesn't get the SL. Let it rev and it can surprise. It brings a smile to my face every time I look at it and especially when I drive it at least every few weekends. Maintenance and up-keep hasn't been too painful mind you some parts are getting rare and expensive now. I hope you can enjoy your investment as much as I have. It is looking like giving a decent return in Australia too if I ever could part with it.

"Elegance and sophistication." You said it best, Elvis. I, myself, have always reveled in the idea of "Better to look good." (Than to speed about like a fool.) My uncle now a multi millionaire started off dealing cars before buying land and i remember in the 80s young teen getting a lift in a brand new one of these, it was silver and inside red leather automatic. His American cars n vans were the best tho our tiny side streets were a struggle but parked cars today would be impossible.

Elvis that’s you all over pal!!… you like your old classics don’t ya. Working on F1 cars with all there modern technology is great but there’s something about the old classics. Roy Reader used to love his old classics to, I’m sure you remember him from your Mac days along with Tats🤔… two great guys who I used have many a chat with while I was at Willys the Red Bull.

This brings back some memories I'm 45 my father had a orange diesel from the 70s what a great car, the hubcaps bring are exactly the same

When I was a kid, me and my mate were sat on the rear boot with the roof down going though Blackpool Illumination. A chap with a pickup shouted across, mines at home, although it wouldn’t fit the family in the back. Simple times where you could get away with things which would be frowned upon today. It was a blue 350SL and when you rev’d it, the bonnet would lift. Beautiful cars and great and I’ve a few memories of that one and a green 380SL. Always wondered how fast the flagship was in its day as both were fast cars

Lovely R107. I had a '79 450SL for 12 yrs and just sold it 2 yrs ago. That feeling of the V8 torque through the 3 speed trans was perfect. Everyone smiled when they saw it, especially with the roof off and in this country. The design and proportions are just beautiful in real life. Cheers from KL, Malaysia.

I was once hitching a lift from Helston to Penzance after a tiring day at art school in Falmouth; I got a lift from a guy driving,.. a,.. mint condition Ferrari Daytona in electric blue and chrome. As if getting a lift in it wasn't special enough, he absolutely FLOORED it, did the rallying, sorry, trip in about 10-15mins. I got out in Penzance absolutely grinning like an idiot. It was really cool.

Nice one Marc - great taste, the R107 is a class act. I always admire them, despite buying a duff one - never buy at dusk, never buy in the rain - good advice which I disregarded. I ended up with a 1983 500SL, a lemon, that was good mechanically but extensively rotten. It was a marathon effort to repair it - especially the front bulkhead area, reels of MIG wire, Argo 5, and sheets of 18 gauge. Enjoy yours - it looks to be a belter - let the smiling continue!

Marc, the previous owner is a good mate of your's so there was no risk. Also, the rules go out of the window with project cars. The last R107 I saw was a 1984 380SL in metallic green on display in a Mercedes dealer in Bradford when my W204 went there for a new rear subframe (this was covered by warranty but that's another story).

Nice car. R107. I would love an R106 but i dont have that kinda monies laying around 😅. I'll just be happy with my 280E and my 230E. 😊 (W123) Have fun driving it!

You have great taste. Body matching hubs + the tartan upholstery! Beautiful example. I had a German import 300td when I was younger, cream/beige paint, mine had sheep’s wool seat covers though. Highly recommended in the colder months. Leather is over rated

I can understand what you are feeling Marc. had the same feeling when I collected my dream car back in 2004: it was a 2000 Mercedes SL320 V6 black in saffron/java interior. Completely original and the only thing I did to it was replacing the Mercedes radio with a Kenwood CD/MP3 radio. God how much I miss that car :(

Great car. I had a 79 450 SEL for a while. It was quite a few years ago now but it was a great car both cruising and brisk driving.

Yesterday it was Marc as my race engineer (telling me off), then he's commentating on 5 Live and now this today! Magic!

great choice and personally the right engine choice too. the 350 is a sweeter engine than the bigger V8 lumps and the extra power does not make them exactly quick anyway. its how you get there not how fast.

Nice, a car from (my opinion) the golden age of Mercedes, when i think about that brand, 70's models like the 280 and the E-class saloons are the pictures i get in my mind. Am loving the tv show btw, i can tell you and Mike can get along very well, and it's just a blast to watch when you two are teasing/annoying one-another hehehe. (well, Mike does that mostly...) Enjoy that lovely piece of machinery you got your hands on there, it looks amazing and.. you can work on it in upcoming years to keep it this nice, after all.. you are quite handy yourself hehe.

You hardly ever see these on the road anymore... all we get now are obese, bland SUV/crossovers. Those old SLs have aged SO well, they just seem to look better, year after year, decade after decade. Good stuff, great choice, beautiful car!
