*For anyone's benefit:* The cam tensioner trick usually just buys time before the chain snaps/jumps. It rattles at start up cause the tensioner doesn't have enough oil pressure to take up the slack, usually only happens after being sat overnight etc then gradually becomes every time. Unless it snaps or jumps first. Great video as always 👍
HGP in Germany uses this engine as a base for their 700+bhp build Golf R HGP. With such a big displacement , there is a lot of potential for a twin turbo setup...
Looking forward to see what you do with this, they're one of my bucket list cars. R36 Turbo build incoming?👀Definitely agree with the ending, when you start changing parts on a higher mileage car, you're opening a can of worms😂
Great video as always Hamza looking forward to following the restoration process of your R36 and seeing the finished article. Keep up the good work mate
Great cars! For last 5 years, I have had a black R36 Estate as my daily. Never skips a beat and even though it is 15 years old, it has enough tech to keep you happy and also keeps up somewhat, with my friends 4 year old Golf R.
We have to say that British people brings a lot to the Automotive sector, Matt Watson, Joe achilles, Top gear team, and TR Hamza is one of those legends, but I kinda prefer the concept of Hamza, and a fun fact, I've started learning English since 2019, These kinda videos has been sort of a part of my daily routine, and they actually helped me a lot.
I cant tell you how awesome it is that you've gotten an R36, I owned one last year, funnily enough I bought it from Birmingham, white freshly imported from Japan. One of the coolest cars I've ever owned, the combination of that 4Motion + the 3.6 VR6 is just super smooth for a car of its age. Definitely surprised a lot of cars and turned heads when a white estate Passat drove past sounding mean. Can't wait to see what you do with it Hamza
That’s an awesome machine to give a new lease of life and pretty dam rare to see. I’ve wanted one for year’s and now I’ve seen this im seriously considering it again. Im really looking forward to the journey you have with this.sick choice man 👌
This would make an awesome DD. Especially with some TT RS and RS3 suspension, and brakes from the RS model unless a kit is available to use "baby Lamborghini" brake parts. Plus being a VR6 this could make some serious power. Excited to follow the build.
I’m not one to usually comment but broo I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and I love the channel! Keep it up bro MashaAllah and to see the r36 here now!!!! Really want to buy one of these someday so I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with this!
I'm less than 1min in and Im properly jealous already. I've been looking at these for ages and always been put off by chain/dsg issues. I might have to get one from an auction and save myself the costs
Bro 😎 what a buy, you are killing it with the cars especially Vr6 powered car, Iv just bought one too and will be doing a turbo build, hope you do one too.
great car and they sound brilliant always fancied one the estate version and funny enough the same color as yours looking forward to watching the restoration videos mate .
How about a cheap Touareg R50 V10 Tdi after this R36 is done? Send it too the moon, it’s something I’ve not seen done before. Only driven them standard but they were proper torque monsters.
Looking forward to more videos on this. Would be good to see some N/A tuning on this, try extract more horses with some old school methods, please don't go the forced induction route, it's been done to death.
Following this one with interest. Fast estates are where it's at (whatever happened to the T5?). Bought a B7 Passat Alltrack 177 DSG as my family workhorse (to replace an E91 330i manual ☹️). A stage 1 remap has given it an adequate level of wafty torque, and it's proving to be a great all weather mile muncher. Still rather a B6 R36 though. Enjoy!
Full interior change .like headliner , better door cards etc . Paint the engine bay covers . New.alloys , take back seats out and covert it to a track car .
You'll not regret buying that! 👌 had mine 3 years now and absolutely love it!!! Sold cars, fun to drive as well as being comfortable, could do with a little more power though, nothing a turbo or charger won't sort out 😎👌
Hamza.. good to see you working on a R36..👍.. I call these cars the forgotten bunch.. because for some reason, they weren't as popular as the diesals, as everyone seems to have gravatated towards the 2.0TDI versions?? I've only ever seen a couple on the road, which makes them more exclusive..
I used to have one of these still one or the best cars I’ve owned. Great looking estate car. Locking steering column is a known issue on these as it’s a small electric if module that has failing micro switches. Pretty easy fix though as can transfer immo chip from one to another.
This is very interesting for me cos I've got one. Had it for about 7 years now.....an 08 saloon in black. I paid about 13 for it, which seemed a lot at the time...but its been fantastic. Interior is dated but the build quality is excellent. The vr6 engine never gets old either. I put a stainless cat back system on it which is just the right amount of vroom noise, I think. Good luck with yours !
NOOO WAYYYY I WAS LOOKING AT THE SAME ONEEE at least we know it's in good hands May allah bless you to do more and bless you with more health and wealth ameen
I’ve been wanting to buy one of these for some time but I don’t see anyone with one. So it’s that feeling of oh they must be not a good daily. Not that I’ve seen 180k it makes me think differently. Good luck fella 🤙🔥
@TRHamza my daily is the 2012 C350 CDI its standard 265bhp I've mapped it, made some aftermarket filters as none are made currently for this engine. Soon to be fitting a much larger intercooler then get it mapped in etc but there's hardly any mods for the OM642 platform and as I hear the block can't take more than 400bhp unlike the BMW and Audi 3.0tdis which go way over 400 easy 🤷♂️
Love these cars! DSG oil pan could also do with replacing, common fault on these era VW’s normally common on cars driven without the lower engine cover.
Nearly all the 6cyl engines across the VAG models of this time suffered from chain slap. But I think as this example had been sitting for some time it really didn't sound that bad. Lasted just under a second, I'd keep an eye on it and see how long it does it for after being left overnight. For the year/mileage, it look as though it had been maintained not too badly, it's possible the chain had already been replaced at some point. Would make some great content to see it being swapped out though!
Or just needs correct oil...VR6 engines dont give that chain issue unless its been tampered with. The last VR6 engine with known TC issues was the OBD1 VR6 from the first gen MK3 AAA engine.
