You can still connect the OYUA to the store, it just takes a bit of work. Even though Razer shut down the marketplace, there is a fan one up an running that is a snapshot of everything that was on there before it was taken offline.
@@Aremisalive that's a surprise...I thought the servers don't work anymore cause the Ouya store got closed and the whole thing sold to another company.
@@xenomorphlover like I said in my original comment. It's run by the community. It's not the official store, but it may as well be since it literally has everything ever put on the old store.
So, I used to own an OUYA back when they first released, and the store interface was pretty much a bunch of rectangle tiles with short clips that played once you set the cursor on them (allowing you to preview the game and what it was about). Oh yeah, You also forgot to show that the controller had a small area on its face where you could slide a finger and have a mouse cursor pop up on screen and you could use that in certain games that required touch-only controls. All in all, I initially was happy with the purchase, but ended up breaking my small OUYA cube because it fell off of my TV stand and I accidentally kicked it hard enough for it to hit the wall and break a piece off inside the Cubed Body itself... Oh, the body is super light and is being weighed down by small weights inside of the OUYA itself. You should do a teardown!
I think it was a solid concept that failed for some of the same reasons that other consoles historically failed. - The idea that anyone would destroy Microsoft or Sony is absurd, in any case.
I remember buying one of there with a extra controller. I was very excited when it first come out. It had so much Potential. It was a new console they needed to give it more time..
Cool overview! I thought the OUYA back then was a bit too good to be true and held off. Quite rightly so, it turns out. Cool to see one in action again after all these years. Little point of critique; Please use an HPF for your microphone. There's constant booming and droning from your hands and your voice going on. I'd say filtering anything below 60hz away should be juuuuust fine :)
You know they weren't trying to compete with the Xbox and PS4. All they wanted was to make an easier way for in-home game development. They literally had a whole marketing bit on how an 8 year old was able to make a game no problem, therefore anyone else could given the time. Ofc, it was nothing but an underpowered android box. It was cool for the time, but unnecessary now. I actually still have it in my drawer lol. Controller is around too, but I've taken it apart before and never put it back correctly so it has some issues.
You are the first person who didn't disparage project oh uyoa I am actually impressed... Most people disparage it all the time... Not understanding the one key factor it was its first of its kind and brought Android to the TV and without it we probably would not have Nvidia Shield Google TV Android boxes or any of that we wouldn't have the entertainment mainframe and gaming peripherals we do today
Instead of that, if they decided to create a port from phone to TV and have a controller connection available, it would be sold out. I would have bought it.
At this point no new company will be able To compete with the 3 titans of gaming. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are the gods. Anything else just won’t be able to compete
Sideload the play store & google play services and you’ll be fine. This thing runs Android so there’s has to be a way to root it and have full access to the system.
I was curious about the Ouya back when it was still a thing, but the fandom/cult that ran the official Ouya Forums were so fucking hostile, I ended up buying an Android Stick PC instead. I got a good few years out of that thing, more than I would have out of an Ouya apparently. At least MY device could access the Google Play store out of the box.
I get that vibe about a lot of things when I started searching random forums for an answer to something lol. A lot of people are a bit too hostile on the internet for no reason
@@jrob0021 History is repeating itself with the Amico. It's fans want an echo chamber where its all rainbows and sunshine and no one is allowed to ask any hard questions.
I agree...if you want a good laugh watch the Josh Topolsky interview with her....its a disaster from the very beginning and she actually says that there is nothing special about this device 🤭
This was a super cool idea. Problem is phone/mobile hardware develops way too fast. This thing was already multiple generations behind when it was released finally.
I remember buying an ouya at best buy for $25 on clearance. I used it for emulators for years. Now it just sits on my shelf in the original box as a collector piece. Along with, sadly, my Nvidia shield portable.
I have two shield portables. Love them but you cant do much with them since they run android 5.1. Wish they'd make a new one, they were just to far ahead of the curve.
I believe a majority of the emulators on this platform were native. I know there were quite a few when the ouya marketplace was up and running. Also, supposedly this console operated best with a PS3 controller. The Ouya controller was supposedly developed around a PS3 controller.
I bought one too: almost new boxed for 30 euro. It's not a powerhouse but I'm able to run many emulators on it which works fine! Only for this reason, it's worth it.
no, you're dreaming. Nothing redeemable about it. It is good paper weight though. Also it wasnt the sales that doomed it, it was a horrible concept to begin with. Free to try games?
I remember the announcement of this thing, I knew it'd be a fail from the way they announced it. Wish it would have worked out free console design sounded awesome but I know personally how hard it is to create a game.
I remember my Samsung Galaxy note 8 inch was running android 4.1.2, jelly bean that was pretty weak. Now, I have the note 10+, android 11 is so much better.
I still use my OUYA a lot. If you overclock it, it's been a really nice and comfy way to play Nintendo DS games at near-full speeds. The fact they sell at prices close to a raspberry pi make them lovely little emulator/media boxes now, and there is a lot you can still do with them.
@@blaire4115 most potato smartphones cost more than I paid for this thing, and getting one with MHL or any decent way to connect via HDMI is a real pain
@@journeytree DS doesn't play PS1, play on the big screen or work as a kodi media centre though, so it's not as practical. I could also get an OUYA for cheaper than a DS right now, so it's not as affordable.
So does any PC hooked up to a TV. From any android box to a Raspberry Pi preloaded with emulators and a custom UI, (essentially what this thing was). I like to compare the OUYA to something that was already readily available to anyone, then packaged , labeled and sold, with no clear purpose or need. Like selling ice to someone living in Antarctica.
It worked for everything it didnt advertise. Emulator and kodi use was awesome. Portable. The touchpad control helped it a lot for apps not native for controls.
Did some Googling and it appears that the modding scene for this console is extremely small, so to anyone who knows anything about this console, is there anything worth doing or should I just toss it out my window?
Also, no I didn't realize there was a touch pad on the controller when I was making the video lol. I didn't figure that out when I was reading an article about the OUYA this morning
I like that they tried to make something to compete with Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox I imagine it's hard and stressful to get into the console market that being said I don't like the controller plates on the front coming off to change batteries
The seller intentionally left the controller apart like that, so that the batteries were not completely in the controller as to prevent damage from possible battery leakage. He had your best interests at heart.
I have the black Ouya. Spray painted the controller plates gold and ended up on their social media page. I was developing a 3d fighter for it. Then the company got sold to Razer. I quit development of the game after that.
@@jrob0021 as inexperienced as I am compared to AAA employees, I’m confident I could’ve delivered one of the best games on Ouya. Which was kind of easy all things considered. Lol
Kudos to Nintendo because even though they shut down the Wii Shop a few years ago you can still connect your Wii to the Wii Shop and re-download any previously purchased digital games. Cool note, if you buy a used unmodified Wii you can do this to see if any are available as long as they weren’t transferred to a Wii U since the games are registered to the console not the user.
The Ambernic handhelds are kinda neat, and they have entire communities porting games over and writing new firmware for them, with the neat little detail that they run a stripped down Linux system instead of Android. They're mostly focused on emulation but people have made easy to install game ports for AM2R, Undertale, Quake, and even the Marathon Games that were made by Bungie before Halo. I got the RG351MP, love to play games on it, and the metal body of it feels nice and solid so I can just toss it in my pocket without a second thought to play anything from NES to N64 anywhere, it even has two SD card slots that can handle some decent sized cards so it's going to be hard to fill completely
I think the issue (at least from my Google searching) is that the community for this device is pretty much non existent now, so I think there's many other emulation choices that would be better than this (ps Vita, psp, etc)
@@jrob0021 yeah, its just an old obsolete and restricted android 4.1 device, and obviously there are so much better options such as a tv box with android 10 or sth
Still have my ouya with the box. It was such a cool idea done by the wrong people. I remember the spokeswomen being disconnected from the crowd they were targeting. I ended up using mine for emulating nes and snes games
Ouya was DOA because it wasn't doing anything you couldn't already do 3 or 4 years prior with a rooted phone, HDMI to mini HDMI, and a PS3 Controller. I didn't have a console around 2009-2015 so I just ran emulators on my TV at home with my old Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. I also created a custom TV UI that worked well with my PS3 controller and a bunch of Google Play games with controller support. I'd love to make something like this again.
Ouya is pretty good on emulation. You can load 3rd party Ouya store on it. I have Ouya, but don't use it anymore. Just fire it up once a year. Like many other old consoles I have. I don't regret on buying Ouya.
I have to admit, the knockoff Pokémon cartridges are a _bit_ worrying. If you'd sell them at all, I kinda wish you'd do something with the shell or sticker to make it look obviously different to make it harder to resell on eBay for $90.
I had one and gave it to my dad to use KODI on a few years back. Nice collector item. Good price and still appears to be in nice shape. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I can't believe how fast, this crashed...I was so hyped after the Kickstarter! I actually held one, at Play N Trade! By that Friday, when I went back to buy one...they'd already, taken them off the shelves... 😑😒
You can do a mod so to speak where you plug in a USB A to the back of the Ouya and the other end to a computer.. add a config file and you can download stuff from the ouya store.. not everything works but it's a lot of fun seeing what does..
since ouya was based on android, felt like its competition aint consoles but phones. Phones have upgrades with versions and hardware, its hard to see Ouya having that kind of budget. I own an android tv dongle which can be compared to ouya, only android tv dongles aint for gaming( i managed to play emulators only aftrr i bought a mini keyboard with a touchpad)
I think the console is compact and beautiful. For the pad I would have preferred a PS Layout.....it may not make sense to you, but I hated the bulk of battery pads, hiding the batteries in the handles r genius, keeping a balanced pad, xbox 360 should have run with that instead. Software is absolute shite, very lazy, pretty much looked like 'file manager'. Should have had more style for everything (icons, emulators, jus everything) they looked too much like phone apps and menu. No, just no. I cnt believe I nearly bought one too...
Game wise I think most if not all of the Ouya titles have been preserved as part of No-Intro. If I remember correctly they should be in APK format and easily side loaded if you ever wanted to do a follow up of more game play.
Wow I haven't seen xbmc in a long time. I'm pretty sure that started during the original xbox homebrew scene which was massive (xbox media center) . Xbmc then turned to kodi I think. Now kodi is finally on xbox but it's a pain because addons are always shut down all the time.
Hadthe OUYA come out in 2011 rather than 2013 I think it would've had a shot at being something good, but in 2013 there were alreadu many options for android based consoles to run emulators from 😂😂
OnLive was before Ouya. I had an OnLive console and it worked pretty well but I had very fast internet and lived closed to an OnLive center. OnLive was basically Stadia but in 2008.
I loved my Ouya it was great when used as a media center , well worth £100 , one of my best ever buys shame others didn't tap into its Hidden features maybe it would have sold more .
“Like every controller on earth, ever” No lol. Only Xbox does that. Literally every other controller is chargeable. PlayStation, no battery pack. Switch, no battery pack. The wii did but that was like 10 years ago
Every time I look at this travesty I think... Wow 9m would probably gone far in a Kool aid cameo/joint advertisement Jug dude: OUYAAAAA! (OOOOOH YEEEEAAAAHHH!!!!!)
It's for ouya to update the system there's good android games today, the price is cheap and (PUBG/CODM/FREE FIRE) has a huge fan base with cheap laggy android phones...
They don’t offer PS controllers with Xbox joystick layout controllers so I can’t buy a PS and enjoy the feeling of playing with their weird controller set up. I might but I don’t know if I’ll hate the feel of game play with that layout. It seems so awkward. It’d be nice if they have both options for both consoles. Like a PS layout for Xbox and an Xbox controller for PS would be nice.
Lol u mean he could had flipped the box at the beginning instead of taping the address off ?? Or just take it apart since it's not gonna make any differences cause it's used anyways?!? Common sense!!!! After finishing the video I get why ... He's definitely"not sure " about alot of things and "guesses" alot of things... Gotta be more confident my friend..
Love your page and website. Glad I’m here before you get to 1 million. If you can lower the GameCube to 75-99$ (with code maybe) that would be so great!👍
Back in the day I wanted one. I still think its a good idea but the problem is that most gammers are not developers. I did not have the money to get it back then. I knowbthe other major reason they failed was the fact they had no exculsive that anybody cared about.
do you not know that it can be modded, like the wii mini. do you look at soft/hard mods for game consoles at all, for 2022 how about maybe mod the stuff, and do a video about "I Bought the OUYA Console........and mod it!!!"
