I am really short. I can jump out of my skin by trying to look taller, live by these "rules" created for me by someone I never knew, and still it is very obviouse I am short. Instead, I choose to have fun with fashion, dress stylish for appropriate occasions and enjoy myself! Self confidence suits all sizes, and life is too short to box yourself into rules. Being height challenged can be difficult. Used to be about 5'4" have shrunk ? 2". Looking better proportional as I used to be extremely long wasted, which made it very difficult to find any setin waist dress that would fit me properly. Learn to sew at 11 years old.Just so I could deal with clothes Fitting right. Having shorter legs complicates things too.
So true! At 4'10 I could wear 4 inch heels and still be the shortest person in the room. The only difference it makes is how and if I am able to move. I prefer being able to walk.
I’ve always carried a big bag. Folks with small bags are always asking “ anyone have a pen, Kleenex, floss, piece of gum, kitchen sink, etc”. Why yes I do! I feel prepared for anything. You are the best Lori! Disregard the nay sayers!❤
@@mikamamma Not when you carry "all of the items" with you all the time, they don't. Trust me, i know. I bring wet wipes, my Mace, scissors, a Swiss knife, a nail clipper, even a rubber gripper - these things add up. 👍😄
@@StarGazer918 your back and shoulders must hate you 🤣 haha! Is all that stuff REALLY necessary for you to carry around ALL of the time?! It took awhile for me but I finally realized it wasn't. I Feel so much lighter and freer now carrying just the true necessities with me... 1 credit card, drivers license, some cash, my phone, tissue, some mints and a lip stick. The other stuff, if you REEEALLY feel you need it (which you don't;) can sit in the car, in case someone needs a nail trim, wood whittled or paper dolls to be cut out😜 I'm just playing😉but it's true!
I always remember a 'writing' rule: Know the rules in order to now how to break the rules. Iris Apfel just died at 102. She broke every conceivable rule of dressing and accessorizing ... and she was one of my dressing idols. No, I don't necessarily dress like her, but she is a style icon who never paid any attention to rules except to know them and know how to break them. She was fabulous.
I applaud you Lori! About time some youtuber fashion ladies are pushing back against the idea that we must always dress in the most flattering way. Geez! Do we only exist for other people's viewing pleasure? Why are we erecting appearance jails for ourselves? It's clothing, we put it on, we take it off.
Hi Lori. I'm a fairly new subscriber, and I just loved this video. I'm 5', 64, and starting to get a bit "fluffy." I detest high waisted jeans. Of course, I'm short waisted, a 34D, (and they're not where they used to be!), and high waisted jeans come up right under my boobs. And sitting in them, is super uncomfortable. I like larger handbags as well. In fact, I have the same Valentino bag as you. (Poshmark!) I'm with you on the frayed jeans. Great for cutting. Not giving them up. I loved the Karl Lagerfeld jacket on you. It looks fabulous. Thanks for speaking out against the so called rules for us petite women. Wear whatever makes you feel good. Have a great weekend!❤

Yes! I do the same thing. I finally bought a striped top after 56 yrs because I’ve always wanted one. I get frustrated always thinking about whether something makes me look heavier or shorter. TBH most of the time I don’t care if I look shorter. I mean it’s obvious that I am short.
I am petite at 5' 1" I NEVER carry a small purse! Actually, I love backpacks more then anything. They are not huge backpacks that kids use for school but are cute fashion ones that they sell where the purses are and not real small. I have several and being a backpack, it does distribute the weight over both shoulders. I can put a lot of things in them and love them.

Love this video. I probably break these rules frequently. I'm short and fluffy. Tucking my shirts feels weird. I love horizontal stripes. Shoes are definitely personal choice. Wear what makes you feel your best
Good points. Where I live it is rare to see anyone tuck in their tops. I am a size 14 apple shape 5'1". I have many tops.. even tees shortened with a slight curve up from the crotch area. It may not be the 1/3 to 2/3 ratio rule but it looks better than exposing my protruded belly. Who cares about long legs if you dont have the figure for it. I can wear high waisted pants because they squeeze my middle and the tops and blouses skim nicely over. I love what you are wearing. That charcoal sweater over the simple top and pearls. Wow! Perfection IMO. .
I'm glad you did this video. I am 4' 11" and I find there are just too many rules for petites in the first place. I love my horizontal stripes and I love my larger bags, too. I find if I wear something "wrong" I just need to balance it with something else - like the larger bag with a pointy shoe. And don't get me started on high rise jeans - they do nothing for petites except make us look like we have no torso, haha. Loved this video.

More manufacturers NEED to have hem length options, petite ,regular and tall options make me happy as a 5 ft tall gal! 😊 I hate hemming and the community where I live doesn’t offer many services for alterations unfortunately!

Boots with jeans and sweater looks good, you put your hand in the pocket and looked cool, so I was think of the tuck in the front or off the side would look nice on you too!
I'm only 5'1" and recently found out that I'm long waisted, so my inseam is really short. Rather than try to appear taller, I focus on looking more proportional. Vertical stripes only accent my short legs. Horizontal stripes are more flattering and I need a high waisted pant to take up some long torso (for a short person) real estate. I realized that I needed to lengthen the look of my legs, but shorten the look of my torso, which was something I'd never considered. We are all differently short and rules are made to be broken. Thanks for realistic expectations.
Yes! I definitely feel you about wider belts with jeans (my personal preference), untucked shirts with my jeans (I like the silhouette of an untucked shirt over jeans ...it just makes me feel more secure)! ❤️ I like this list too!

I love being short, and never try to hide it. I am more into what makes me look slim, and turns out I break all these rules ALL THE TIME...lol...greetings from 156 cm..lol PS Both the Queen of Norway and the Queen on Sweden are about as "tall" as I am, and both (especially Sonja of Norway) are really good with proportions. So even if I never need the sort of clothes they use, I can still watch what sort of proportions they use, and I am sure they both have professional stylists. The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg is pretty doorknobby also, although a bit chubbier and she LOVES flamboyant clothes, strong colours, things that wave in the wind etc. And she too also seems to give half banana in looking taller, but she normally looks really good.

Lori, I am a big woman only five foot tall. I love horizontal stripes and whatever size I am I will continue to wear them. I don't care how fashionable they are I won't wear raw edge jeans, or jeans with holes in them.,
I always try to be kind. Why say something if it is not kind. I thought the black bootie outfit looked great. I would never have tried it but it did work, what a pleasant surprise. We petite girls don’t have a lot of real estate for the high rise jeans. I can do a 10 in. Rise max. There are styles for all shapes and sizes thankfully. Right now we seem to have many “in style” jeans which is great. Not just the one “it” style.

Excellent video. For me, practicality and enjoyment are far more important than arbitrary rules. I’m short because God made me that way, so it’s a bit pathetic if someone else finds it offensive when I look my true size.
I was in a store trying to find a solid color top to go with some patterned pants. There was a top that I thought might look all right, but it was not exactly the same as the similar color in the print. I asked another shopper what she thought, and she said something that I have repeated to myself a number of times since then. She said, "Do you think the fashion police are going to stop you for it?"
I agree with you about the high rise jeans. I have a short torso and I like the jeans to hit below my bellybutton. The high ones reach under my bust line ( lol)😢
Love the Karl Lagerfeld and I think it looks great. Lots of stuff doesn't hit me where it should and I do not care either. That is a gorgeous jacket. I also like that it's slightly loose-fitting. You carry it off fine!
Hi Lori, as a petite with a short torso too, a hugely important number for me is to know how many inches rise a certain pair of pants have, specially because high rise or mid rise can be so different from one brand to another. So please, please, whenever you show pants, please try to mention that “magic” number 😊. Btw I love your channel ❤

61 yr old and 4'11". I think knowing and understanding the "rules" can be very helpful. If you look in the mirror and like what you see then who cares what rules you might be breaking. If you put on an outfit and it just doesn't look right, knowing some basic rules can frequently help to make some minor tweaks to make the outfit work, like tucking in a shirt or changing shoes. Scrapping the whole thing and starting over is time consuming and frustrating. They are "tools" not "rules".
I agree 100% Lori. Wear what makes you happy. The only think I can't do is striped shirts. I think they look horrible on me but look great on so many others, yourself included. I'm definitely in the no high rises camp. The most I can tolerate is 10" but 9" to 9.5" is perfection in a rise. I have to thank you for the Liverpool LA ponte pants you featured in one of your videos. They are absolutely perfect on me. So much so I got 3 more pairs (some on Poshmark so great prices)! The back rise is perfect too. So many times not only will the high rises look bad in front but they slip down in back (at least for me) too. I always felt like I was in a saggy diaper when that happened. The Liverpool pants are the only ones I can wear without a belt, no drooping butt, lol! I think one of the "petite style rules" I tend to break is oversized clothing. Sometimes you just want to be comfortable. Now I don't wear something 3 sizes too big but a bit of an oversized look is not something I shy away from.

I actually love it! If I like it, I’m going to wear it! People really need to look in their own mirror! Ha!
I was at a up scale mall. I went in every store found nothing. I was just completely exhausted. I stopped at the food court to get a drink. I sat there watching all the people go by. Out of two hundred people that went by only one was following the rules. I got up went back to some of the stores and bought things I liked not going by the rules.I came home happy.
