11:16 OK OK OK. As someone who read some of the books, i can give some inside into this. In "An offer from a gentleman," it's mentioned how Violet has a soft spot for the wallflowers because she used to be one and she trys to get Colin and Penelope together because they remind her of her and Edmun, who was also considered the catch of the season. Thats why their dresses are similar here. I believe we will see more of that in the next part. Cuz i feel like she understood that Colin had to realize he was in love on his own terms and that's why she was gently steering him in the right direction. Also blue is the Bridgeton color, obviously, but lilac symbolizes early love. So I think they're both gonna fall thus season. Also, no spoilers, but Eloise's flower details may be foreshadowing for her book love interest.
A note about Queen charlotte she wears the dresses from the previous era when she was younger to not confuse george. I hugely reccomend watching Queen Charlotte cause the costumes in that tell the story of George and her and it really leaks into Bridgerton. She's stuck in time with her clothing in love with her husband but also very obviously frustrated with his mental state so kind of out of Grief and for him she wears the older more large and equisite gowns of past.
I think Cressida's costumes are trying to say she thinks she's very fashion forward/avant guard. Her huge sleeves and crazy hair are very 1830s, which is so ahead of the curve, but no body else in their world gets it.
About the Violet and Penelope matchy matchy situation.... In this season we have two underlying conflicts concerning someone becoming the lady of the house. Violet struggles to let that role go and make room for Kate (who doesnt seem eager to fill that role herself) and the Featherington sisters have this whole race going on with who gets pregnant first so that their son can inherit the Featherington estate. I think this is hinting, that maybe Penelope might win the Featherington race. Maybe the other two both have girls and Penelope has a boy, so she inherits everything and becomes lady of the house.
I like that in all the BTS videos the costume department very clearly say "this is fantasy, we're not going for realism" because it's like a green light for us to enjoy the fabulous outfits in all their anachronistic glory. The only thing I disliked this season was the change in Kate's dresses - the dress she wears to the ball looks so matronly compared to anything she's ever worn before. As if jusy because she's married now, she has to dress 20 years older.
I think it kinda works in the character arc kind of way??? She's the new viscountess and she's trying to look the part and more responsible/capable. But I do agree I just wanna see her in a fun flirty I'm still in my honeymoon phase with my husband. 😭😭
i’m surprised you would say you disliked her first ball dress because that was my favourite! but to each their own, and I do love the costume designers saying they completely replaced a historically accurate bag with a more modern one just because they didn't like the way it looked lmao
19:00 The homage thing is to show shes stuck in the past with George. Also someone said she wears like old styles as to not confuse him which is really sweet. 3:11 Also, in the book its said that Fancesca and the earl were a team so it makes sense that he brings out in her that structured look
I don’t know if you picked up on it but Francesca isn’t just quiet she’s written as somewhere on the autism spectrum that’s why she likes the quiet there’s other videos on this but she displays a number of traits that are common to people on the spectrum I think it’s awesome that I included so many different types of people. There was also a deaf woman in one of the scenes using sign language so loving the inclusivity! Also I believe he is as well, he doesn’t actually reject her in the scene where he walks away, he gets an idea about the music and misses the social cue to excuse himself properly and takes off to go get her the music. It’s really interesting how it’s written because you think he’s almost turning her down but in reality he doesn’t realize what he’s doing and he’s really going out of his way to do something nice for her.
It’s like the same kind of accuracy you expect from like steampunk fashion. It takes inspiration, but there’s clear fusion of other influences. Anachronistic details, going for the ‘it’s regency, but make it runway or baddie-esque’ each season they always attempt a new angle. This season they went for some more Indian inspired silhouettes with Kate. With some biomimetic fabrics, and the Bridgerton girls are very old Hollywood Audrey Hepburn and pen is more old Hollywood Rita Hayworth or Marilyn. I like the unique world building of making the costumes singular to the world they’ve created. I can easily suspend my disbelief. I think I was only truly surprised by the little detail SPOILER: when Colin went and explored pen lol she wasn’t wearing stockings. I thought this universe really hammered in the propriety aspect of women’s fashion and no stockings and exposed ankle was crazy. It might be symbolic of pen being rebellious and some kind of vulnerable exposed mentality she’s in, but the way they were going crazy in that carriage and the one thing I said ‘good heavens! What a scandal’ To was she was stocking-less.
I loved all of Penelope’s looks and especially loved her hairstyles and hair bobbles. I’ve put in an order for blue and pink pearl pins because I adore how they styled her hair in the balloon episode.
love this! i know the styles are sooo far from historically accurate but the clothing tells a clear story for most of the key characters. ive seen some people say that cressida's sleeves almost look like armor, which makes sense. shes trying to look powerful bc she wants to take control of her own life. her gold look with the huge sleeves and choker is so insane but tells a lot. i think the combo of power shoulders with the symbolic "im trapped" choker is so significant to her story also queen charlotte gives so much more info about certain characters especially the queen herself, lady danbury, and violet bridgerton. maybe this is a spoiler idk but basically in that show violet says that she is wanting love in her life again and uses a garden/flower metaphor so im gonna be keeping an eye out for more floral patterns on her 👀
I wonder if Penelope wearing a similar dress to Violet, is a link to how Violet had the relationship which was based on friendship, like how Penelope has with Colin? 🤔
I honestly think Cressida’s more extravagant dresses especially the yellow one with the corseted neckline thing, more so shows how the marriage mart and her family are trapping her in this “mean girl” archetype, whilst also trying to stay the powerful women she is. And I also do agree with your theory on her storyline this season, I so badly want Cressida to find the love she deserves.
Great insight on Francesca! As for Violet, her sleeve after meeting Lady Danbury's brother is just like the younger female costumes. I feel this suggests that she is feeling giddy, and girlish as she did in her younger days. She's having an awakening after years of grieving. I adore Penelope's looks this season! Now that you've posted I suggest watching the InStyle video 'Bridgerton' costume designers John Glaser, George Sayer and Dougie Hawkes break down how the show's costumes were brought to life. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6FT_2c0wwKc.html
13:55 As someone who got married in 2012, I legit gasped. Such a read. Even my kitchen has one wall painted Tiffany Blue, with red kitchen accessories. 😅😂😂
19:11 I heard someone say that the Queen wears gowns from the early Georgian era so that her husband (George III) wouldn’t get confused bc he doesn’t really realise that time has moved 💞💞
I really enjoyed this video and your thoughts! There is so much drama this season that I barely got time to look at the costumes haha so this video was great!
I feel like in the show season three prudence totally had a little arc of sort of losing her moms favouritism and realizing that Penelope is more than she ever realized and she began to be kinder to her husband and to her sisters
Great video but your first impression on Francesa is correct. At least in the books she is boring af and I can't understand what Micheal finds so fascinating about her🤨 In the netflix series I do like her character more
I think i heard that the designers wanted Cressida to be like a bird in a gilded cage and the fact that you can see that. Also back in season 1 Eloise says that women who wear feathers look like birds trying to attract a mate. Also Lord Deblin is intrested in birds. And he also hates his family so they have that in common.
My prediction for Cressida’s romantic arc: Debling then Eloise. First she marries Debling, but then he dies shortly after their marriage (this is THE Northwest Passage after all) and then afterwards she and Eloise find a way to live together romantically, and their costumes revert to something similar to their strolls this season (where they’re both more themselves, more relaxed).
Disclaimer: I love Bridverton and will keep watching no matter what. But in S3 I find that some choices of the costume department do not make sense to me and it feels like they don't have a plan for some of the characters. Or if they have, I don't understand it. For example Kate's dresses, Lady Featherington and Alice Mondrich.
Hai I'm Mary I am from Finland I just wanna say Thank you history enää love you videos and work and I love you Family history Just be yourself into you❤
Totally get that the costumes aren’t meant to be historically accurate but I do wish the craftsmanship/tailoring were better sometimes! It was more egregious in s1/2 (ESPECIALLY with Penelope; they were clearly trying to make her look “bigger” by making her wear dresses that didn’t fit, especially at her bustline). I get that it’s a Netflix production and they’re likely to cut corners, but man. Wish the actresses could just have dresses that actually fit them. (Also the copious use of sequins as opposed to beads or even good quality rhinestones often reads as really cheap to me, but that’s more of a personal pet peeve. Sequins can be fun! But they don’t scream “wealthy gentry” to me either.)
@@veronivadelgado7131my only problem is that when Eloise finally opened up fully about her belives to Cressida at the dance she wasn't really paying attention. But that was because she was focused on Lord Deblin, so maybe her obsession with finding a husband is what caused that. Idk. I'm sorry, but I really don't know where Cressida's character is going. All I know is, she's gonna do something big in part two that I'm not gonna spoil what it is.
@roxirock5455 you make me wanna read the books queen! I feel like once Cressida stops focusing on finding a man via her moms wishes, she'll let her guard down and see Eloise in a romantic light. I think she'll fall for Eloise first. Lol idk I'm just feeling them vibes
@veronivadelgado7131 lol maybe. Cressida is way less likable in the books, so I am definitely glad they changed that. I'm so excited. Also very curious on why does Cressida hate Penelope so much? Like, is there a reason or is she just an anger output?
