So 'Skylines and Turnstiles' is the song that started it all. Gerard Way (the singer) was on a ferry from Jersey to Manhattan (where he was working in graphic design) on September 11th 2001. He saw it with his own eyes, from the Hudson River. He wrote the lyrics to try to express what even being witness to that meant to him. He contacted his brother and some friends . . . And 'My Chemical Romance' was the result. 'steel corpses stretch out toward an ending sun, scorched and black' will still endure as one of the most impactful lyrics ever written, in my opinion.

Man, I wanted to tell him that story! But honestly, you said it way better than I could. Skylines and turnstiles has got to be one of the most emotional songs I've ever listened to, and probably the only one that's made me cry to be honest. He started the band with "you're not in this alone" and they stayed true to those words. It's truly empowering when you think about it. I couldn't be more happy that this band exists.

@@bread8439 I absolutely love the lyric "You're not in this alone." Basically because of what you said. It's positive, empowering and it's the first line they ever wrote. The older I get the longer I remain a fan of MCR, the less I understand the connection of emo equaling sadness. This song is political too. Because it's about 9/11. I learned this much later but I think a key part of why this song works so well is because it's one of the few songs about 9/11 that doesn't have that tone of superficial joy or courage, a lot of the other songs about 9/11 have that by way of patriotism. Like while it's not necessarily as bombastic the subtle message of hope and a call for community and the focus on the question "How can we as a city/society get better?" makes it ring a lot more truer. And understanding that they ARE talking about hope is so crucial to understanding the band and their message.

Early Sunsets over Monroeville is based on dawn of the dead, where they hole up in a shopping mall. In the song, he gets him and his love to safety, only to find she got bitten. She tells him she loves him as she dies, and leaves her body to reanimate... So he has to put a bullet through her head. The emotion behind that dilemma is conveyed very well. Also, if you want rap with emotion, Hopsin's ill mind 7... Rap + emotion

Skylines and turnstiles is a song Gerard wrote about 9/11, because he actually witnessed it while working for cartoon network. He actually started the band because of 9/11

to the emotions in early sunsets: apparently it was a lot even for the band, like after gerard recorded the vocals the rest of them had to go outside for a bit and recover, especially cause like that's their friend and then he starts singing and pulls out emotions like that yk also, everyone else has mentioned all the other songs you have left and the lore for some of the songs on this album, but if you're interested in learning more about the band and shit theres a long ass documentary called Life on the Murder Scene that they made with footage through the years up to just before The Black Parade. It gets pretty dark at points and gets into gerard's mental health/addiction, but is really interesting and cool

Fun fact: Skylines and Turnstiles is the first MCR song ever recorded. Is about the 9/11, when Gerard experiences the fall of the towers. He was very traumatized and when he got home, he started to write the lyrics of the song. Now that i see it, this is not very funny😢 P.S: Pardon my english, i speak Portuguese😅

The reason Early Sunsets sounds so emotional is because Gerard suffered severe tooth pains during the recording of this album, but he insisted on singing this song all in one take, which would’ve hurt a lot. The band members then went out for a smoke break because of how emotional his voice was, and Gerard fainted from the pain he felt.

You DEFINITELY have to react to Conventional Weapons. It's not an official album technically speaking, not like the ones you have reacted to, rather it's a compilation of their scrapped songs recorded in 2009 before they settled on Danger Days - but it's well worth it. I fully believe some of MCRs best songs are on Conventional Weapons - Boy Division, Kiss the Ring, The Light Behind Your Eyes, etc.

ok, lets go. headfirst for halos was my most listened song on spotify last year lol. are u calling me emo???? yeah maybe you're right hahaha demolition lovers is definitely one of the best mcr songs! i completely agree with how well the songs represent their feelings, like, something kind of chaotic, desperate, intense... i really love how they represent it so well! i think that's why so many people can relate to their songs. in the documentary (im just saying 👀) they talk about the purpose of the band to help messed up people by showing them "we're messed up too and we've been through it and now we do what we do!" well they really did. they are really important to me in many ways. really thank you for this content and for all the love! it's really nice to see someone's first reaction to something you like so much, i get so excited haha it's like my first reaction again ps: you should react to cw and the other songs outside the album!! like "fake your death", "emily", "BURY ME IN BLACK " and ( if you want to cry for days) "desert song". sorry for taking so long! it's really one of the things i love the most and im so excited to talk about it :)

great reaction! love this album from them, has so much more raw/unhinged punk energy and it's basically timeless. hoping you do Wildlife by La Dispute soon! it's a concept album about life in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and follows so many stories from the town and is intertwined with a bunch of letters/poems and beautiful guitars, and then ends off on a crazy two track conclusion i swear you'll find something to love it. it's more raw like gerards vocals here, but the instruments sound incredible and there's a lot of genre-jumping, i hope you check it frfr

While reading the comments I've seen that everybody else explained Monroeville and Skylines, so I don't have much to talk about, but I'd still like to give my thoughts! Coming back to this album after not listening to it for a while made me feel really emotional. Obviously, if you've read the other comments, you'd know what Monroeville and Skylines are about. And honestly, they're both really sad. This whole album is pretty depressing, really. But in Gee's words, not about Bullets but about Black Parade, though it still works with this, "It's something so brutally honest that it's beautiful." I'm glad you've been looking at the lyrics to some of the songs, because they're really interesting. Like you said, they put the saddest lyrics into the most upbeat sound. It's crazy how they make it work, and that's one of the reasons I love their sound so much. As I said in a comment on part 1, Skylines and turnstiles is one of my favorites on this album. Someone gave the full story in the comments which you probably read, so I'm free to share my thoughts about this song. It was the first song recorded on the album, and it is just so emotional. They started the band with the lyrics "you're not in this alone", and when the world was absolute crap, these guys stepped up to help make it better. This whole entire album is just pure, raw emotion. I'm tearing up while writing this, to be honest. I don't have much to say about Monroeville, except that's it's a very sad song about having to kill a loved one. The lyrics in that song are just so depressing, really. It's beautiful, though. They really put so much thought into every single word, and it's amazing. That's really all I have to say about this album. I mean, I could go on forever about every little amazing detail, but I won't for your sake! In conclusion, I'm starting to appreciate this album much more than I did a year ago. If you're interested, I'd recommend watching an iceberg video about MCR, actually I think I've recommended it before lol, but yeah, it's really worth checking out! I've gotten a lot of cool information about the band from those kinds of videos. Honestly, the end of this video is kinda sad. You seem to really appreciate every single person in your community, and it really shows how MCR brings people together. I love being in this amazing little community, and even though I've only been here for a few months, it's still bittersweet to see the end of this series. But it doesn't have to end! There's still Conventional Weapons, Living With Ghosts, and TBP B-sides! As well as their unreleased songs, too! If you wanna end it here, that's totally okay, but if you ever feel like listening to new MCR music, even if you don't make a video about it, it's still a great experience! I've enjoyed this series a lot, it's what brought me to this channel. And your reactions are just so much mire interesting than any others I've seen before. You're probably the only channel I'd be willing to sit through an hour long reaction video! It makes me really happy knowing that MCR is still changing people's lives to this day. Truly a timeless band. Much love to you, Nacho! You're a great guy :D

I found MCR while going through a really rough relationship in my early 20s. I was never into "emo" so it was embarrassing to tell people but i fell in love with the entire 3cheers album first then black parade came out. Loved every song on that album too and then found out about this album. Knowing Gerard was a comic book fan makes this album make more sense, especially in the song Sunsets over Monroeville where its a story about his gf i believe being bit by a vampire and him having to figure out wether to kill her or if shes already dead. My favorite song by MCR of them all is definitely Demolition Lovers. There's some songs off the Watchman album and b sides that are really good too so there's still more MCR!

Ah headfirst for halos. I love the dichotomy between the lyrics and the sound, the peppiness of the instrumental mixed with the really dark lyrics kind of gives me the impression of trying to mask all the dark things going on mentally by putting on a happy outward facade. If I'm remembering correctly, this song was them trying to write a "pop" song at the time. They said that if they could pull off this one, then they could do anything they wanted Skylines and turnstiles, as some other people have said, was the one that started it all. Gerard is definitely talking about the monotony of 9-5 jobs in this one, drawing on his own experiences working at Cartoon Network, and how watching 9/11 made him realize how he didn't want to do that for the rest of his life. It encapsulates the feelings of uncertainty about what the future holds after such a life-changing event. You don't quite know where to go next, but you know that you can't just go back to what you were doing before Monroeville!! One of my favorites from this album, it's so pretty

Cubicles is not overlayered. Ray toro does these crazy stretches throughout the song and the whole album. Look at tabs on this album, it’s not beginner friendly at all. I remember trying to learn cubicles and drowning lessons and it’s so much stretching and complex riffs. Demolition lovers is another example of that kind of guitar lead your referring too. He don’t overlay. Ray toro is literally a god, I to this day do not know how he came up with this stuff at such a young age. He had frank lock down rhythm. Ray toro is the mastermind behind the guitar work.

This Is The Best Day Ever is not one of their popular songs. It's not very technical or over the top. It's not even long at all- one of their shortest. They never played it much live. I have never heard anyone bring it up when talking about MCR songs. But- Something about it makes it one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. 😤 It is (like you implied) a wall of chaotic sound hitting you- but I feel like when you go back and pick apart the lyrics, and hone into the multiple times the song builds before shifting abruptly, only to build again- it's insanely cathartic. Like the musical equivalent of your heart jackhammering in your chest. Edit: But yeah, lol Demolition Lovers is THE song you bust out for your girl. 👌
