Hey everyone and welcome back to Railroads Online! Today we're going to connect up to the iron mine again but this time along the shallow line around the lake. In order to make large wood deliveries it is going to be important to have an easier route and so I decided to take the time to really setup a nice lakeside run at a shallow grade.

FYI I've seen someone running Eureka on a 50 meter curve at max speed (29 mph) and tip off the rails, so likely somewhere below 25 mph would be good for those tighter spots.

I would suggest using the three way switch at the saw mill. it might require some re adjusting of one of the crossing points but overall i think using the three way switch would make in a lot easier. the three way would replace the switch that you have right at the loading area if it wasn't clear

@Ronald.Golleher

@@zionjarman3610 I think it' mostly because it doesn't spring like the others when you run through from the back side and you have to make 100% sure you're lined the right way no matter which side you're coming from. The regular 2 way switches, of course you have to line for which way you want to go, but coming back through them you can just run through. Great for trying to just go and run trains, but not necessarily realistic.

Getting the exact location for new industries would be nice, but I think an approximation is fine if you don't want to rebuild the entire network. As long as you get the orientation right so the entry angles are the same.
@Nevir202
@Nevir202 8 месяцев назад
Like I said in a prior video when it came up, I think placing them by hand and adapting the rail network as needed will actually make it more authentic. It's not like IRL all industries existed and railroads got to calculate a most efficient network from the start. They changed and adapted over time, with the rise and fall of industry.
@Suckynewb

@@Nevir202 I meant in terms of viewers relating to their own play-throughs. If someone picks it up later and follows along, suddenly the layout of the industry is completely different out-of-the-box. Not a major issue, this is a game after all.

Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho has a pretty decent bridge across it, probably 2 or 3 times wider than the in-game lake. They used to have a big trestle across the Great Salt Lake in Utah,but that’s just a giant fill now. They had a station right in the middle of the lake!I think there’s some bigger examples in the South, but I can’t remember what they’re called. Once you get some faster engines, the longer alignments are the way to go. I went even further, around the back of the mountain past the coal mine, then 3% up the cliff to the iron mine. I found a decent 3% route from the IM to the smelter. I use the Glenbrook and Eureka to handle things on the flats, and a Ruby Basin to help shove them up the hill. If you can, save up for a Eureka since it can do close to 30 now!
@Pystro
@Pystro 8 месяцев назад
31:55 You _would_ "screw up" your loading (i.e. you have to reverse to the crane in order to load both products). But placing the switch next to the cranes would give you an easy option to reverse the train. As it is now, a train that comes down going forwards will have to go back up going backwards. (Unless you do some ridiculously long reverse stretch that involves going into one of the inland-facing main lines.) If you want to completely re-design the sawmill, I'd _either_ start with a _full_ circle in front of the loading platforms, and wye everything into that; _or_ do _all_ connections into the line up to the smelter (both the main around the lake and the main to the freight depot) and keep only a single teardrop loop past the loading platforms.

That's really the big problem with huge parts of this map: It's not designed with the intention of being usable with tracks. Same with some huge even looking areas in the hills. They are all so lightly uneven that it's a pain to actually put down an industry and make a station there. The devs actually changed one of the areas with the content update so they could fit the farm there. Buried the stuff of anybody who built there in the process. That map could and should work so much better for this game.

Hey Kan, I’m wondering if you can use this same alignment method to connect the coal mine to the 4%. That would eliminate the reliance on a crazy 10% grade. You could probably go around the near-side of the lake and hook in where the big iron bridge crosses the valley to the freight depot. As for your mill issue, maybe try replacing the mainline/smelter switch with a three-position switch, then use some diamonds to connect it with the mine alignment. So your loading doc switch connects to the mine, smelter, and goods alignments (left to right).

I'm back seat gaming here, but at 5:22 I would have gone out further to the right (with the piece of rail that the train is on). See how the rail from this direction goes left then right and then left again? I'd have gone straight, left, straight. Or maybe even a gradual left turn. And I'd go as far leftwards when passing over the edge at 5:51 to hug the mountain side more, like making a 60° turn on the plateau. 7:24 even more than that. 38:34 is another view on why I would re-do it differently. But hey, that's just my OCD and I don't claim that it's the right amount to have. Though I also do wonder how much one can generally improve their first alignment by going over the finished product in the opposite direction and re-doing everything...

From what I remember from the tooltips, Eureka is of right now the fastest engine. Also I moved my iron mine to the top left corner of the map, just below the monument. Built a route at with a minimum of 70m curves and a max 2% grade. Montezuma (my starter engine) took almost 20min (at full load, 6 cars) to get to there. Couldn't even reach it's top speed of 15, maxed out on 12. This was before the speed update thought.

I've taken the line up the NW edge of the lake, 2-2.5% all the way, didn't hug the landscape - just followed the shoreline. I also made the line from the Mine to the Smelter 2-2.5% all the way by creating a zigzag line. Yes, it limits your train length to an extent, but not greatly. Can fit 8 small cars + the 0-6-0 on each spur with room to spare.
@kingblulime4371
@kingblulime4371 8 месяцев назад
Essentially, building the mainline around the sawmill industry, as shown, creates interesting dynamics between all 3 of your lines: what about building your industry track around those routes bound towards more important areas? keeping your mainline clear of industry track by moving out more. Using this for loading: From the load area facing the lake: make a fat S bend round 180 both ways til you get to an alignment exactly how your bridge is set up. Then hook that S bend to a switch connected to said bridge, use the remaining link point to continue a 200 meter wide Mainline-curve headed towards the supply depot. Since the coal mine, ironworks and refinery all require smelter products; making that 4% part of the mainline may be of some use. Your level of intellect and expertise far exceed my capabilities, although, I think my idea is far better for long term growth in other lines.

From the Sawmill, go toward the Freight Depot just a little. Turn off to the right and double back. Turn and follow the lake at 2% rise. Use a lot of snaking to gain altitude. You just took the new line from the Iron Ore mine (call it at 12 O'clock) and the 10% to the Smelter is at 5 O'clock. The line I took would come in about 2:30 O'clock and maintain 2% for the run. It does mean a LOT of bridge work and that is the only disadvantage.

AND YOU SAY "I know it doesn't matter..." AND LET ME TELL YOU IT MATTERED TO ME. Seriously, I love how you think. On the other hand, that stone foundation is gonna get saturated, so it would be the perfect place for a watertower. I live in a very wet, very old city, and whenever there's a stone foundation, there's a fountain nearby, because the stone will literally sweat on it's own otherwise. And be careful, sometimes water can burst the foundation if it can't escape, but I'm sure your engineers are leaving places for water to flow on the stonework.

Sorry for multiple comments and edits, I add stuff as I watch and answer your questions as I hear them. There's very few older pictures of when the thing was still up and functioning with the train cars out on track laid out over the water, but they're there. The old Great Saltair Railway is no more and is long abandoned. It was part of the Salt Lake Garfield & Western (SLGW) rail line. It initially was like a legit rail line, then the Saltair theme park opened up and it became an attraction. That particular line ran from 1891 to 1959.

33:05 just use a stub 3 way switch and if still to thight through down a diagonal crossover and then either a left or a right switch to make that a perfect loop, which was done before in real life which is now demolished with only a switch and crossover still standing
