Hey everyone back with Trailmakers! Today we are back exploring the high seas with a brand new cargo ship and crane! The high seas requires us to recover artifacts from the water and I figured the best way to do that would be with a massive ship that is equipped with a magnet crane to both pick up objects and handle the huge waves!

Large ships do tend to have bow thrusters, which are lateral thrusters. So that would actually be perfectly realistic. Some also have main propellers that can turn around 360°, which allows for more maneuverability, but that's quite advanced and thus not used by very many ships as far a I know. (I know of some dredging ships that use them, but no idea about cargo ships)

Was about to comment about outboard thrusters - I worked on a ship that had 3 thrusters - one at each corner of a delta Hull- boy did that thing roll 🤢

the yamal max class ships have both of them (massive lng tankers) and most us coast guard cutters have port thrusters

Yes cargo passenger tuggs and even floating oil platforms use 360 thrusters and bow thrusters

Large cargoships sometimes even have propellers with adjustable pitch. Meaning you can adjust the pitch to change speed or even reverse all while still spinning the propellers at the same speed in the same direction

Got a couple improvements for ya. First a paddle keel that'll help you resist the forces of the wind using the water, it should also help improve the steering. Second is putting blocks between the pistons it could be having the jitters due to the pistons directly interacting with each other, this I'm not as confident about.

Yes the pistons in trail makers do not like to be fully contracted it tends to glitch out and yes having a block between pistons help but requires more space and complexity. Try to use the crane and not fully contract @kAN Gaming

the other thing to stop the jitters is have a hard limit on the pistons when contracting. even 0.05 seems to work better than full constract

You could use a mod to increase the complexity Kan. Although the mod I know of occasionally crashes the game when you reach like 1200 complexity.

With the propellers you could try putting some sneaky engines in the hull since water can just go through it.

To add on to this, I would recommend looking up pictures of cargo ships in drydock, or really any large ship. you should be able to see grates covering cylindrical holes that run from one side to the other, with propellors in those holes. Those are the bow thrusters people are referencing. And smaller ships that are designed to fish things out of the water, such as Buoy Tenders, have the ability to perform omnidirectional movement. They can't strafe as quickly as they can move forward or backward, but they can indeed strafe to offset the ocean current pushing the vessel around in rough seas. Even some cruise ships have this omnidirectional movement capability, so that it doesn't have to rely on tug boats to assist in docking.

Kan, look at bale trailers with auto loading functions. Something like that would: 1. Klang less 2. Work better I also agree on the point of adding hatch covers

use the servo motors for propellers. set them to 2 speed, 360 and hold position, and chain 2 of them on top of each other to get them FAST. they are very powerful.

an improvement on the crane. I notice it got really jittering when the statues got close to the man body of the crane, so my thought was adding a piston to the arm of the crane. Not the "rope" part of it.

You can delete literally most of the pontoons on the top layer. They’re completely out of the water and do absolutely nothing

With some knowledge of the physics engines I must say that it is actually really interesting how stable the chain of pistons was. No physics engine likes long chains of rigidbodies, but it is usually pretty stable when it comes to all rigidbodies having somewhat similar masses. The worst thing you can do is having 2 extremely heavy bodies chained together through extremely light body. Both heavy bodies are pulling the light one to them, but the light one is unable to pull on the heavy one, so it just starts to wobble back and forth if you pull on the system. Here you have massive ship with with pretty heavy crane, 15 light pistons and heavy cargo on it. Of course it will wobble until the heavy ends are close to each other or something breaks. Having 15 pistons of X length is not the same as having one 15*X length piston.

Ocean ships go up have an average speed between 40 and 60 kph 7:53 Most big cargo ships have that so it is realistic

You should put the crane in the front of the ship, to have a larger work area. Maybe remove all that hinge thingy and make just a adjustable arm with pistons Maybe try don't putting pistons also

You could put magnets in the cargo bay so they can latch onto artifacts and keep them in place.

Stormworks is the only voxel game that does it properly. When you load a creation it turns all the voxels into 1 3d model which is waay less laggy and allows you to make enormous creations

for the vases you could make the ship submergible and extend the crane by the limits of how deep you can dive XD And a helicopter would absolutely be nice ^^

I still think you should give From the Depths a shot, it's good at handling much larger ships and has systems for custom building multiple types of engines.

Also went for a cargo ship with a crane, a moveable drone platform and attach point for sub. All 3 builds got stabilzers so they will stay at exact position.

You could recreate the interceptor from the ocean cleanup, it would probably be good for picking up things easily

You need to have a bit of strength on that henge. That should help. I used a all piston and henge based grabber arm before. Movement was curve forward and backward. Even used it on a plane but much smaller.

You could also use paddles on the rotors, they grab more water but are abt the same size

its kind of dissapointing how the best method of transport, exploration, and collection is just an amphibian drone with 10 magnets strapped to it. it can get anything on water, under water, on land, in caves, and whatever else this map has. i dont recommend building a drone, its just a really boring way to beat the DLC

Part of the problem is this DLC is just a static scavenger hunt, so there aren't really any puzzles or changes that you have to adapt to, so you can easily create a minimalist omni-solution and anything beyond that is actively making your life harder.

shift the rudder forward to clear the big props. the hull needs to be a bit wider for less roll action. 1 layer of floats may allow you to lengthen the hull overall and place the crane on the back or up front. don't retract your pistons fully in and they won't freak out. move the crane to the bow and if possible taper the bow up & out to "reach" into shallow water to grab items near shore or in caves

Kompliment! That's one stable boot there Sir! Doing mighty fine good work out there on the water and such... But well lets be honest, that crane doesn't need improvements, that thing needs a complete overhaul. It looks incredible, no doubt about that, but its no keeper, not in a long shot, not with how them fisics and things are, saddly. I think more than 3 together are a risc. I try to segment them, 2-3 pistons and a block, repeat as needed

You could build multiple separate sections of a huge ship and connect them with tractor beams or spikes. That way, you could build something bigger than the complexity limit.

This would only work with the anchor block, the tractor beams no longer interact with creations.

Most cargo ships run at 24 knots and your cargo ship, when we convert 50kph to knots, goes just about 27 knots. So your ship is a bit faster than an average ship. 😊

What if you made a boat where the front of the hull opens up with 2 doors so you could just run over them and sweep them away. Maybe you could also suspend a magnet above the door frame to guide the salvage inside.

I had a similar idea for a cargo door that facilitates scooping, but also improves on the crane functionality: First, make the bow a detached piece that's able to lift above its closed position far enough that you can scoop up a piece of salvage (imagine a human-like mouth, but it has only the upper jaw, that it can lift). In order to pick up salvage you'd get a bit of forwards speed (so that any artifacts in the cargo hold get flushed to the back), THEN open the jaw and drive over the salvage. And to get the crane functionality, you just attach a magnet directly to the bottom of the bow, and make the whole thing also able to extend DOWN (hopefully to 75 meters). You could even cover both directions with the same set of pistons, thus greatly reducing complexity. Then to transfer statues to the cargo hold, you'd need to get to high enough speeds that they get flushed into the cargo hold before they can drop too far from under the magnet.

You can make the helicopter rotors spin at 10 instead of 5 so they’d both be spinning at 2 the speed

Agree, that dlc is great. I dunno understand mixed reviews on steam. I love it. You can try error exploration sub from the Workshop if you like. Great freighter boat btw.

There are cargo boats that can do 50kmph or 27 knots, Most can do 15-25kts

For that complexity limit kosmo has find a way to get rid of it so maybe contact kosmo and after that pls built a massive ship (real massive) and real heavy so it can handle the waves nicely

the speed the ship goes is actually in the ball park of real cargo ships. 50 Kmh is 26 Knots, which the mid-fast average is 23 Knots

Just build a LCVP or Higgins boat and scoop up the artifacts from the front. As for the crane replace it with a telescoping proboscis.

Honestly I don't think any artifacts will be within reach of that crane under the water so I'd say cut it down to just enough to get the magnet under the waters surface so you can still pick floating relics up. Still awesome design

You can try to build a whale hunting ship. It is like this ship without the crane, but can open the front to let the floating objects to enter into the ship.

The only things that hold back trailmakers in my opinion is how inferior collisions are between parts compared to SM, and no bearing. Bearings and proper interactions between parts would enable so many millions more options

I think you should take the buoyancy out of the middle at the cargo bay and make the sides open and add some propellers facing side ways to move the boat under the cargo and then close the cargo bay so you don’t need crane to put it in

Ive played around quite a bit with this style of propellor and you can go a lot faster if you use 3 or 4 rotating servos set to spin 360 degrees but it doesnt take any time to accelerate

Bro even the biggest of boats have a crest on the bottom to deal with strafe 2 I would change the crane to not have a rope to reduce complexity so you can make it even bigger and add the crest 3 I you should make the front sharper and more battle ship like to increase speed and cut through waves

Just a thought, a cargo ship with a crane mounted in the bow, and with a door that opens at the bottom of the ship, could work really nice for both ballance and stealth.

me and my friend built a big ship with these big propeller and it was able to go at 50 but after an uppdate they didn't work anymore. So it was better before.

If the complexity limit is low, just make your ship in different creation, and then attach them together with anchors

If you can make a prop with adjustable fins🧐 change the angle from 45 to 30 degrees for higher speed. May be to complex, idk

So instead of a crane, what about arms on each side that rotate backwards. Like how a garbage truck picks up trash cans. Then a video challenge/ ideal would be to make an airplane submarine. Dive deep pick up artifact then the fly over and air drop cargo.

i made a rope outta hinges and spooled around a big cylinder laying down and used that as a sea crane in the middle of a catamaran besides the occasional expulsion if the "rope" falls off the spool i had the same issues where its not even worth it lol you need a sub for 90% of the artifacts anyways.

Turn the cargo ship in to a submarine holder and deploy the sub and deposit it into the cargo ship so you won't need the crane
