Awesome project! I plan on making this, but I'm new to Arduino. I saw in a previous comment, the spindle is connected directly to a power supply (I was going to buy a variable DC power supply from Amazon). But how are the stepper motors powered? Did you connect that same 12V 20Amp power supply to the Arduino, or are you using your computer to provide power to the steppers through the Arduino?

Nice overall design! Is it possible to get the 3D assembly file or a .step of the assenbly? I would like to rebuilt this but with some adaptions and the 3D file would help me out a lot!

Hi, I’ve bought most of the parts for this project, but I was wondering about some of the hardware. In the build plans It does not specify the length of the threaded rods. I would appreciate it if you could tell me the lengths of threaded rod needed.

@DAZprojects
@DAZprojects 3 года назад
I modified the stepper motors mainly to be able to control them with the grbl shield, the mod also made them more powerful and fast, but i don't know in details why, i just know that it works👍

how accurate is it? i could see the spindle vibrating quite a bit when cutting. good job.
@DAZprojects
@DAZprojects 3 года назад
It is quite precise when cutting wood, acrylic is doable but less precise because it is harder. There is no backlash at all, but the structure flex a tiny bit due to the plastic not being super rigid, in wood that is not a problem, in plexiglass you start see some vibrations, but maybe if you print the rails with 100% infill you can avoid that.

I’m about to pull the trigger on the order for the couple of parts that I dont have. But, i was wondering if you had tried to engrave PCB’s with your machine and whether it was successful? Nonetheless, its a great design and I’ll get some use from it!
@DAZprojects
@DAZprojects 3 года назад
I tried, the pcbs weren't very usable and the tracks weren't very good. I used a v bit, but maybe if you use a really small end mill (less than 1mm) it will work because it will cut better than the bit i used. The motors can definitely do that, but the plastic rails aren't stiff enough for such a job if using a bit that don't cut well. I tried engraving a pcb with a 2mm end mill and it turned out ok, but the end mill i used was way too big for this job. I still suggest you to build this machine, you will be very happy about the results on wood and plastic 👍

The linear rails seem like too much effort and potentially with precision issues. It seems better to just use roller bearings. Grooved bearings on a store bought metal angle extrusion or on a 10mm tube or shaft.
