Let's Review the new Arrma Mojave Grom and the upgrade it with a budget brushless system! Is this the best small scale RC basher ever made? Let's find out!
This is quickly becoming my favorite RC channel. I’d really like to see a video about basher tuning! I know most people say “it’s a basher, who cares” but things like shock oil and shock springs make a MASSIVE difference for landings and big bashing. If your shocks are using thin fluid they aren’t absorbing as much shock as they could be, causing extra wear and damage. if the fluid is too thick it won’t be active enough for small bumps and may even bounce more on landings
Absolutely but I will admit that I am certainly not the best at vehicle tuning. I run so many different cars that I've become very tolerant to imperfect setups. I do try to get them at least reasonably close but there are definitely racers and stuff out there that are way better than I am.
@@DoRC it’s more of a personal feel thing for bashers since there’s nothing on the line. I for one almost always change out stock shock oils for bashers. They’re often way too thin which leads to chassis slap and underutilized suspension. Gotta think of it as a Goldilocks situation. Going too fair in either direction can be detrimental
There is actually soooo much room for 1/18. For $5 you can get an esc mount, use the stock servo and not have to leave that giant receiver in there And you can use stock fan. Then you have about 2 inches of free space between motor and esc.
I love your content and how informative you are. For us newer guys in the hobby it really helps. Can’t wait to see your channel grow. You honestly deserve so much more subs, my friend!! 👏🏼🤘🏼
I was really surprised with how flat and level mine jumped off my little ramp. I expected it to nose dive bad. It's a good little truck. The leaning and skidding around was a pleasant surprise. Waiting on the truck to drop off my brushless stuff right now.
Check out the HBX 3100A SCT! Hobbywing brushless system, 35mph on 3s, live rear axle/trailing arm suspension, metal gears and about $130 USD! Not many people seem to have reviewed it but worth a look! 👍
@johanneswicklein4975 wheels might be a problem, though. With THAT body, and all of that awesome suspension travel, the stock tires already sometimes rub against the body. It'll only get worse with bigger tires...
Was waiting for your video on a brushless Mojave grom! I was wondering - did you notice the ability to air control the grom on 2s? Brushed has no air control where even the typhon had some so I’m curious - great video as always!
No unfortunately the air control really didn't get much better. Obviously it's a little bit better because of the increased wheel speed but the small tires coupled with the high mass of the car means you're just not going to get much air control. Of course they'll definitely be some air control in the next video :-)
Just came home with a slightly used Kagama and i can't be more thankful for your videos on the Kag! This one was great also, I was no fan of the big brands, but i like the smaller cars too. The chinese ones just seem to cut corners left and right. These groms are looking so nice
Great video as usual! Should have mine out by end of week. Idk how you guys make videos sooo fast. I'm getting better though! Thank you for the info! 😊
Thanks for the video! This is great and yes we would love to see just how wiild you can take the Majove. Just be wwarned, I have gone through 4 of the cheap brushless systems off amazon. They go up in smoke if the wind blows wrong. LOL I ended up putting the Hobbywing 60am in the Majave last night and I have the Castle micro in my Typhon. I should have just saved money and bought these from the start. Lessons learned on my end.
Absolutely. The cheap Amazon motors are fine but the ESCs are junk. That's why I put a 10 BL60 in this one. Check out my next video in the list as I've already released the wild upgrade :-)
I got one from my local hobby shop because my pre order was taking forever( it came in yesterday) love it keeping both 😬 and I’m here for as many videos you feel like making on this Mojave grom platform. But hit it with 3s I just seen a video yesterday dude got 57mph. So make as many Mojave grom videos as you’d like😎
Yeah I'm sure they will be people going really fast with these. That's not really my goal as I'm primarily an off-road basher so no matter what I do I'll probably not be hitting 57 miles an hour :-)
Dude knows his stuff! 10BL60 is a gem that no one talks about for 1/12-1/18 scale. It has 60a running and a 320a peak (or something RIDICULOUS like that). Whereas, that Mamba Micro X2 everyone keeps talking about is only 40a running, 80a peak. 10BL60 also has a smaller footprint than the Micro X2. It’s a bit taller but that’s because it comes w/ a fan whereas the Micro X2 does not. I ran the Micro X2 w/ the 8k KV motor and the motor shaft blew up in my Mini B. Now, I run a 10BL60 w/ a 2848SL 4k KV. It’s WAY faster and worlds more reliable and runs a lot cooler.
Interesting. I've found that the X2 is a little more powerful than the 10 BL60 but I've never done any actual scientific testing on it so can't guarantee that
@@DoRC Hmm.. I didn’t notice the Micro X2 having more power, but I didn’t run the 2848SL on it. I noticed it got hotter than the 10BL60, much faster. It would also cut out randomly and come back on if you pushed or picked up the car. My hobby shop actually let me return the Micro X2. Haven’t had any of those issues w/ the Hobbywing setup and it’s definitely much faster. The 2848SL is crazy lol
@FilthUD That's strange. It almost sounds like that X2 was defective because in my experience the X2 ESCs have lots of jam and run pretty cool even without a fan on these cars especially
Great content as always, really like your channel, If you keep it up it will definately grow! I have my own preorder on this (Europe) so I've watched a lot of videos on the Mojave Grom, what I found odd was you getting 19mph out of it stock when pretty much all other reviews on this car seems to get 22mph, perhaps some resistance in this specific examples drivetrain?
No. It's probably the terrain. I test my bashers off-road because that's how most people are going to be running them and the additional resistance of that off-road terrain causes them to be slower. I don't really see a point in finding out what the perfect condition ultimate top speed is because that's not what anybody's going to be doing in the real world
I'd be really interested to see if you can safely get an IC2 onto that or another brushless ESC. Big benefit to this platform is the USB-C charger and battery, gives it immediate portability. Would also be interested in seeing if there are any decent brushed motor options in order to keep the rest stock. This was great, as usual, cheers.
I don't see any reason why you can't. What I did in the video works just fine it's just kind of unsafe. As far as brushed options I honestly don't think that's worth even trying to pursue. If you're going to spend money just go brushless.
I do have that brushed combo I yanked out of the Gorgon in a box somewhere. It's already a combo esc/ receiver unit also. Surely there isn't room to mount that motor though.... hang on, I gotta go rummage through some parts.
I saw a video on here of someone putting a Traxxas 380 motor and getting 4-5 extra mph. It seemed like it dropped right in. I think it is TRA7075, but not sure offhand.
@@DoRC 25th but I am not holding my breath. Anything hyped means we get screwed. There has only been a handful of the 4s mojave made it over and virtually none in white.
Yeah, you’ll definitely need to upgrade those diffs and the plastic drive components. The extra weight on a grippy track equals broken diff and dogbone. Horizon Hobby did warranty the components, so that was cool.
Hey, Is the 10BL60 esc for 1/10? That’s what I’m seeing on their website and it doesn’t look the same. Do you know where I can get the same ESC as yours? Thanks in advance!
Technically it is and it probably doesn't look the same because I removed the fan from mine but it is the same ESC. I'm not sure if I'd really want to put it in a 1/10 scale vehicle cuz it's pretty small but it's great for these little cars.
I am anxiously awaiting these guys. But don't look at your Horizon account on these. It will be the highest of highs when your preorder says avail and they hit your card. Then you wait for tracking and it says backorder. Lowest of lows.
Keep in mind just because I'm doing upgrades it doesn't necessarily mean you must do them. This thing's fun right out of the box. As long as you understand it's limitations which is that it's a small RC car and isn't very fast it is a blast to run
@@DoRC there’s no rumors about it but I refuse to believe they’re not working on one. Seems like the next logical setup. Could even be their first blx grom, but I’ll just be happy if they do any version of it because the 3s big rock was my favorite 1/10 scale until I blew my 5th slipper and then the driveshafts started to go out.
@@DoRC now that I think about it, I’d like to see a big rock 4s too. That would basically be the perfect arrma imo. I thought about the k4, but it’s kinda too similar to my erevo. The thing that makes a big rock so awesome is the tires. The narrow width closer to a SCT tire but retains the thick sidewalls of a MT tire. You don’t really see that style from other brands very much
@dylanwhite6539 Yeah we'll see. Not sure they will do one since they already have a monster truck but I'm going to be doing something kind of similar in the next video so stay tuned :-)
It looks nice! Disappointing to me that it isn’t the same width as the other groms. Sticking to scale is cool and all, but the better handling would probably be worth the slightly weird proportions. My LC racing LC12B1 racing buggy kit arrived yesterday. Got it for $150 on aliexpress, and heard nothing but good things about LC. Have you ever had one?
I had one years ago. LC racing makes very good stuff. A lot of the older cheap Chinese stuff was a direct clone of their products. I'm not disappointed. The Mojave ram actually handles really well especially with stock power. With bigger power of course it's going to get more squirrely but it's kind of hard for the manufacturer to predict what everybody's going to do with them and then build it to that specification so at least in my book as long as it works properly as it comes out of the box then it's a success and this one does work pretty well out of the box
I was looking at those last night wondering why im buying small scale rc again without just getting the LC truggy EMB , everytime 😂because they’re cheap but by time they all set up you’re at same price anyways. Also LC uses bl35 it’s 50 60 bucks the bl 30 was cheap I do run that with 3s sometimes with 14t reflex , it still has the lag the rebranded ones have , and the had bl60 for 35 bucks and another one that was expensive. Forget name of hobby shop but not going beat Ali express prices sometimes I’m afraid to use them prices too cheap .
@@RcPlayer-tt2vw yep! Everybody I’ve asked says “I wish I just got the LC earlier” instead of wasting time on dirt cheapos. Since I love my minis, I had to! I’m planning on trying to squeeze a spektrum 100a in there. Probably end up having to buy something else though!
As someone with a 16bl30 in a granite grom I’m not convinced it would handle 3s. It does get quite toasty on 2s. That being said I’ve only ever ran it on 2s with a variety of motors for several years and it’s still ticking.
Do you happen toknow what size bullet connectors one would need to connect that motor and esc without having to solder directly? Also i hope you putting the granite tyres on the mojave was foreshadowing for a future video 😮
The 10 BL60 doesn't come with bullet connectors and I don't remember what size the bullet connectors are that come on the keenso motor though it might be listed in the Amazon ad. Either way though you're going to end up having to do some soldering if you want to use the 10 BL60
Unfortunately no. You can use an SR315 receiver with the stock remote from what I've heard though. I haven't actually tried it myself. That being said the SR315 receiver is pretty expensive if you don't already have one and you could get a Dumbo RC transmitter and receiver or several other setups for very similar money to just buying the single SR315
ooops that mamba X2 ESC got in the way. lol little snickers gets people attention. lol. can't wait to see it in action. i will have to agree with the cheap Plugs. buy quality not quantity. i learned my lesson. The cheap ones must be made of monkey plastic. lol.. have fun
I already have the servo mount. Whether or not the ESC ends up on top of it just depends on packaging. The internal cage on the Mojave makes space pretty limited so I'm just going to have to play around with it and figure out where the best place to put things is going to be.
@@dylanwhite6539 Yeah it's pretty straightforward to trim if necessary but I'd like to work around it if possible. I'll just have to wait till I get everything swapped out and start seeing where things fit. Should be fun :-)
Honestly I think that a buggy just isn't really the appropriate vehicle for this size of platform low slung and lightweight is not a great combination when the car is already very small. It's a fun car but I do think the Mojave is the best yet
@@DoRC - the Typhon improves a LOT with granite tires and rear bumper swapped on (for the wheelie bar) I really want to scare up some Grojo shocks to try on it. the "Gryphon" convert seems to make it a much more fun little car (though the shocks are still lacking, bring on the Grojo ebay pulls!)
For a brushed system running on 7.2v I think 19mph not to bad but if you're going to trow in a brushless system you should get more power morespeeds too that's mine first thing on my list 😅😅😮
Yeah I think that the out of the box performance is perfectly adequate for what it is. More power is definitely more fun but there's plenty of fun to be had with the stock system.
Unfortunately, at some point, you will have no choice but to convert to brushless (2440 or 2838). Those 380 sealed cans just don't last. I saved some from 2006-2007 era as museum items (from Duratrax Vendetta) and was very surprised that they still make those and even put them in 1/18 today. You can find top-of-the-line 540/550 can with no problem, but for some reason, the smaller 380 stayed the same just as bad for almost 2 decades. So, either buy 1 brushless for total diff destruction or get like 10 sealed 380s ready to burn out as matchsticks.
Yeah that's true You're either going to be replacing the motors or upgrading. That's why I figured I put this video out so people could see the cheapest decent upgrade you can do
The new, metal geared diffs are no longer an issue. I watched a video here on yt last night where the guy did a brushless conversion on a mojave grom and beat TF out of it. No issues. Just a heads up....
@@Wanted1069 Yeah I think if you're going to go big power you still want to get the all metal differentials but the steel internal spider gears and it seems like maybe a material upgrade on the output cups have made the stock ones a lot stronger
@DoRC can you pull one of the diffs and see if they added the metal gears to the Mojave? Last I heard, after the Typhon grom, they were going to be adding tye metal geared diffs to all new models. But I haven't seen anyone crack the Mojaves open yet...
@DoRC ok cool. One problem I had with the granite were the batteries I ordered for the conversion. I neglected to look at the batteries size so I have these little longer 3s that I'm not using. Buuuut maybe I will now
I always try to detail the parts that I use in the videos. I don't generally do links to them because links are always changing and I also don't want people to think I'm trying to sell them anything.
@@DoRCthat was the reason I asked I have the motor for the losi minis and didn’t know if they would fit but I’m thinking about getting a few Arrma minis and racing them I’ll probably just water break in the motor though
this is not cheap a set you shoud have used surpass hobby 2445 and 35amp esc and slr300 if you want to use the stock transmitter you could also go with a 2845 but you will need a diffrent pinion after reading a person who did a 3650 motor in a granite a 48dp pinion works fine
Yeah I really don't like using surpass ESCs. That's why I said at the end that I think this is the cheapest setup you could get while still ending up with a good system. Yeah the SLR 300 would work with the stock transmitter but I didn't factor in transmitter cost to my price so I still think this is about as good as you can do while not buying ESCs that like to catch fires :-)
after some research idk why but the Hobbywing Quirun WP-16BL30 is in my country €30 and on aliexpress €19 why didnt you use that esc? idk how expensive it is for you or mjx 45amp esc
They already sale Mojave Grom kits/rollers? Interesting! 🤔Thought that was RTR. The word build is so overused in most hobbies. Like it was 95% already built guy's. 😜
Gotcha. Whereas for some people that would be an easy mod it's not something I think I would recommend to most people out there. There is quite a bit of inherent danger to cutting open a hard case and I feel like that's one of those things where if you don't kind of inherently know how to do it I don't think I want to be the person recommending it.
@@DoRC yes please do, i was going to buy the metal CVD ones for the granite and typhon but realized its not the same part # so now its just sitting broken :(
@@DoRC typhon grom- ARA311178 mojave grom - ARA311229 :( they pretty much look the same, but im sure theres a small differnce in length or sometghing like that
I ordered at 9am the day it was announced. Literally as soon as I got the text from them I stopped and ordered. Mine shipped Tuesday and arrived yesterday. My Amazon brushless combo is supposed to be here today. After driving it I'm not upset anymore. I actually ordered another one to leave stock for the wife and kids. It's worth the wait.
Slipping sliding ACTUALLY having to control throttle and braking? It's called driving, lol 😆 come on man, that's what you want. At least me. It's pretty boring not having to put effort into the driving part of it. MORE POWER 🔋 💪🏽 LETS GET THERE!!
I completely agree but I have been bashing just about every day for the last 20 years and have owned a couple of hundred vehicles in that time so I have some skill and this is difficult for me to control under heavy throttle. I'm not saying it's a bad thing I'm just saying that the wheels and tires feel like they're getting overwhelmed.
