I built the WORLD'S STRONGEST suspension for the 2nd gen syclone

Yup, its definitely overkill, but this custom 3-link rear suspension should never give me any issues, even if we achieve our goal of making 750 horsepower. This S-10 had terrible wheel hop with the stock V6, so it had to be corrected before adding more horsepower. The kit is based on off-road parts, but should work perfect in a triple threat pro touring style pickup.
check out my other build, the ugly truck. its a turbo big block burnout machine

After having a roll over in my racecar NOTHING was salvageable besides the ignition key...i truly appreciated having the appropriate safety equipment on board. I no longer think the words "overkill" applies. Over building is 110X safer no matter the components.

Been welding for over 50 years. TIG takes skill, while MIG is possibly the easiest mode of welding process. Knowing which is better for your application is key. You have mastered that.
@ItsDaJax
@ItsDaJax 3 месяца назад
TIG seems like it'd be easier to do.
@ryurc3033
@ryurc3033 3 месяца назад
@@ItsDaJaxtry using tig on aluminized steel tubing, stock rusty pipe, or a exhaust hanger with even the slightest bit of corrosion. For exhaust, it sucks, machine set up wrong, it sucks, materials with even the slightest contamination and it sucks. I only have one welding bottle, and tig takes straight argon, while mig takes a 75% mix. With mig, things don't have to fit up as well, or be as clean and it will still work. Tig is almost like playing guitar. Some people can't make their hands do two different things at the same time.
@wkjeeping9053
@wkjeeping9053 3 месяца назад
Mig could have been used for this too. Tig adds beauty to the welds. If your good at mig, it can look great to. Smaw takes more knowledge and skill then tig and is how you are state or federally certified to weld bridges and dams and stuff.
@ryurc3033
@ryurc3033 3 месяца назад
@@wkjeeping9053 you can start an arc with 6013, set it down, and it will weld. It's almost too easy. 7018 reverse polarity works great for everything. But honestly, I always found stick welding easy, and by far takes the least amount of metal prep to make it work. Part can be covered in grease, scrape it off and go.
@robertmceuen3630
@robertmceuen3630 3 месяца назад
Union Ironworker for 30 years. Certified in stick and Innershield unlimited thickness. Yes, stick is hard at first. TIG requires both hands and sometimes one foot all working in unison. But you are correct, MIG is beautiful if done right.

15:00. Somtimes you can put some valve grinding compound on the threads, and just run it back and forth through the rough spot and it will slowly grind away the tight spots without ruining your threads. It’s a trick an old diesel mechanic taught me. Works great if it’s a large bolt that you don’t have a tap for

I've been tig welding in a Fire Truck manufacturing plant for 35 years(mostly aluminum, with 10-15% being stainless steel), all steel on Fire Trucks is MIG welded(I.e. ladders, turret, hydraulic tank, etc.). I train a lot of people to TIG weld. The ABSOLUTE hardest part is rhythm. Hands down. So, one of the questions I ask ANYONE I'm going to teach is: Can you dance? If they say what, and they always do. I ask: Do you play an instrument? Then it's usually a stupified look. If they answer yes to either, I absolutely promise they can tig. The rest can be taught, but if you CAN'T KEEP TIME OR RHYTHM, you're hopeless.

I'm glad to see you weld that gas x-member up. I can't tell ya how many air bagged s10s that the rear end was all wonky because the kids just welded a link to it and called it good. Seen one first gen the factory rivets let go and sent the x-member up ripping the bed loose and sitting the rear of the truck on the ground. On that one we were gonna try to help him patch it up but after we crawled under it and seen the botched job on the front and rear we told him to just call a rollback. I wouldn't trust that thing to roll off a trailer and by us at a show.

Bro, awesome build! FYI I've done two of these awd swaps on s10/ s15 platforms. Running around 350 & 450 hp at the flywheel (for reference) and I've NEVER experienced wheel hop in the awd iterations. Your build quality is far superior as I left the rear suspension stock(*ish). As you know, wheel hop is never going to be a problem for ya. Excellent build, sir and I'm loving every video.

If you can put a bump stop over the pumpkin you could use all of your shock travel because it usually isn't bottoming out on both sides at the same time. A thing I do when welding something like those links is I'll ground my welding table, tack the spud in the tube twice, then roll the tube on top of the table with my torch hand as I'm welding so I can get the entire weld in one shot. If you don't have a motorized rotary fixture for that the rolling works pretty well. As for the bottom links, you might consider re-doing them in 1.75" 1/8" wall tubes to reduce unsprung weight. I would leave the top link heavy because there is only one of them and it's shorter.

That offset third looks like it could be a compremise. A PHB with the axle mount on the other side of the third link MIGHT counteract it. Did you think about maybe a wishbone, or [lowercase]Y arm, where the axle has two mounts? I get trying to keep things stock appearing is quite the challenge sometimes.

Got a question. Is it really necessary to have both ends threaded instead of just one? I made my own control arms on an older Cherokee, and only did the one end. Also thought about sending a differential gasket to someone to water-jet some .500 That would sandwich between the cover and diff housing that would let me have ample room above the diff to be a base to weld to for arms. You keep me motivated!

Where it takes the second person to help lift stuff from a fab table or even say on the suspension, a easy to build and thinking ahead make a lift that can be broken down for storage and also adjusted for different heights, I saw a fellow in Australia use a pallet jack and build a engine lift on it. You can wheel it around easy, slide under tables or vehicles and lift enormous weights. Give it some thought and don't commit to any one way till you mock it up. Nice shop building, so figure if you own a part of it, then that itself is quite a commitment. So many tools are just a one time or once in while use item so think ahead and find what works for you.

I've got a couple questions maybe you could answer. Why go with a 3 link instead of a 4 link? Also it looked like your bar length was a little long on the top bar maybe it was the camera angle but is there a certain angle that you are aiming for on the rear diff or are you just aiming for as straight as possible for the driveshaft?
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 месяца назад
I chose a 3 link because I could design in plenty of adjustment and it was easier to package around the constraints of the chassis. The angle and lengths of the bars have been pre determined to put the instant center (the imaginary intersection point of bars) just below the “anti-squat line” which goes from the rear tire contact patch up through the center of gravity
