Crazy version of “Wild Thing” with Jimmy Barnes. I was opening with my band for Cheap Trick here in Oz many years ago and wild thing was coming through the PA at soundcheck, and Robin asked if I knew who the vocalist was? I said, “Barnesy” , and both Robin and Rick, replied with, “Oh you mean god!” So Jimmy’s reputation had already circulated in industry circles in the US.

Jimmy Barnes and Johnny Diesel the guitarist(real name Mark Lazotte) are brother in laws they married sisters. Jimmy and Farnsey go back a long time and are great friends. Jimmy helped Diesel break into Australian music telling him “get off my couch and make your own record, you’re too good to be a session guitarist or bit player, you have it all”. 35 years later they’re all still very close. Was glad to hear the other day Jimmy speaking on local radio that John Farnham was recovering well from mouth cancer and still is hopeful to be able to sing again.

When you research Jimmy Barnes, he was dual lead singer (with Ian Moss "Mossey to us Aussies") of Cold Chisel ( I would recommend Bow River live at Ringside). For true Barnsey check out Working Class Man. The guitarist in this, is Johnny Diesel, an accomplished singer, song writer and muso in his own right, and also Jimmy Barnes brother-in-law ( married to beautiful sisters), so you will see Diesel in many Barnsey clips. A lot of our Aussie singers colab together, so you'll also find Barnsey/Tina Turner, Barnsey/INXS, Farnsey/Olivia NJ, Farnsey/Human Nature, Farnsey/Anthony Warlow, Farnsey/Stevie Wonder and many more. His immense natural talent and scallywag lovable personality has endeared him to millions. And I am one. He has been declared Cancer cleared recently. God Bless him and his family. He has given so much love from himself to the Australian people. Through good and bad times. Thank you John Farnham. I was 10 when he put out his first single in the 60s called Sadie. @@robertn.3297 Australia is a nation of immigrants - 30% of Australians were born overseas, and 50% have both parents having been born overseas. Australia as a nation embraces this and considers people to be Australian if they consider themselves to be - which all of these men do. I hope you realise how racist you'd sound if you said a similar thing about non-white Australians, and if you are Australian, maybe from there you can take a step back and think about why you have this attitude about people not born here. If you aren't Australian, then you clearly don't understand even the basics about Australia as a society or country, which is fine, but maybe don't comment about things you don't understand?

In the pantheon of Australian rock, I'd put Jimmy's band Cold Chisel at No 2 just behind AC/DC in terms of impact. I was still in single figures when Chisel disbanded but it was impossible to not hear their music growing up. All of the members of Cold Chisel were song writers, and Barnes and Ian Moss had successful solo careers. But on the bright side, he got to live an amazing life, with the peak of his performance years in the 80s and 90s in Australia - no phones, no social media, audiences who paid attention to the music and appreciated solos from the musicians on stage, who adored him for the phenomenon that he was and is, and who also let him lead a private and happy life with his family and local community. Honestly, I imagine John would choose the life he had over the things that fame in the age of the internet entails anyway!

@@Saan42 Actually, he was rejected for a long time, due to the cabaret-type performances he started out doing (example: "Sadie, The Cleaning Lady"); robbing him of many of what could have been his most fruitful years and, certainly, some of his most formative years. Also, the sheer lack of exposure of his era really did do more to stymie his rise, than to protect him from any potential of being turned into a manufactured "pop star". Lastly, much to my dismay (albeit, a conspicuous and ironic lack of shock), it turns out that he was a life long, heavy smoker (as well as performed in many smoke filled venues in his early years); which, in recent years (and likely "lubricated" by a certain experimental concoction that also took the life of his long-time friend and producer), landed him with career-ending throat cancer.

@@shoahkhan5670 Whatever dude. I'm assuming you're some conspiracy-loving, anti-vaxxer nut from your references to "experimental concoctions", so not really interested in your interpretation of the world around you, as it's obviously completely warped, despite the amusing attempts you make to sound erudite in your comment. Glenn died of Covid, and it's pretty gross of you to suggest otherwise in pursuit of your weirdo agenda. Although I must say that I have a "conspicuous and ironic lack of shock" at that kind of behaviour coming from your lot. Par for the course in my experience.

Jimmy does a great duet with Tina Turner, singing Simply The Best; this came about as part of a commercial for Australia's National Rugby League competition, and was released on both artists albums. There are too many songs to list from bothe his Cold Chisel days and his solo career; some that come to mind are Khe San, Working Class Man, Stone Cold, Driving Wheels to mention a few.

If you would like to check out another one of John's duets, I would highly recommend his 2000 live performance of the song " Angels". You would have to suffer his first 1.5 minute of joking around but after that his singing ranges are incredible!

In the late 80's I used to live in Largs Bay, a beachside suburb of Adelaide. I saw Jimmy at the Largs Pier Hotel a time or two when I was around ten years old...I used to sneak around the hotel all the time. I didn't hear him sing there when I was there and to be honest I wasn't into music yet anyway...I didn't know who he was at the time either until years later. Apparently that pub was where he liked to hang out in those days.

Glad you enjoyed these two at their best. As a Footnote about the song, it was supposed to be a shared song on both artists new albums but unfortunately for John his label didn't think it would be much of a success, so they decided NOT to take up the option. So much for record labels knowing all as it was a huge success for Jimmy and his label. take care and yes Jimmy Barnes version of Stone Cold with John Bonamassa IS definitely one you should check out

John's range is something that has captivated me since I was 5 years old. I can hit a c5, but he lives up there. His 2 hour concerts are never lower than the recordings, in fact he improvises parts that go much higher than the recordings. He is a true phenomenon. My vocal hero. And he's a great bloke too.

THESE MEN and many more from the Aussie rock n roller landscape are responsible for the bursting of many a ovary over the years creating a relative fireworks of youthful awakening of lust and love! The 70's 80's and 90's is the musical score of the best years of my life, and nothing now can even compare. Where men were men and wore mullets like a lions mane!!! Dragon, Cold Chisel, INXS, ACDC, Hoodoo Gurus's, Men At Work, Divinyls, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors, Choir Boys, Mental as Anything, and so much more ... but these two .. the cream of the top!!! The best female singers and back up singers in my humble opinion are Vika and Linda Bull with Black Sorrows another awesome Aussie band Chained to the wheel and Never Let Me Go .. get the live clips .. these sisters are just AWESOME .. and love BLACK SORROWS .. sigh
