Worth the wait! Jimmy and John are the legends of Aussie music. They've done a duet you'd absolutely love 'when something is wrong with my baby'. Blues for days.
G'day Beth, Hope you & your family had a Wonderful Christmas & all the best for the New Year, I got to see Barnesy live many times in my life besides his Solo career I'd recommend Cold Chisel, there are so many AWESOME Aussie & Kiwi 'Pub Rock' bands, growing up in the 70s, 80s & 90s going to gigs either in the Beer Garden as a Kid or Bar as an adult was always a blast, I wish I could name all my fave Aussie/Kiwi Bands & Singers but there is not enough room so just a few of my favourites, Doc Neeson (The Angels), Mark Gable (Choirboys), Jeremy Oxley (Sunnyboys), Chrissy Amphlett (Divinyls), Craig Bloxom (v.Spy v.Spy), Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House), Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), Marc Hunter (Dragon), Also there is James Reyne from Australian Crawl & solo but as anyone who has seen him live will tell you no one knows what he is singing 😂
Some interesting facts, the drummer was Jimmy's son and his daughter Mahalia was one of the backup singers on this song. She has been a long time singer with Joe's band and took center stage with their song Riding with The King. The Barnes family are very talented musicians.
Jimmy Barnes credits Tina Turner as the biggest influence on his singing. She joined him in recording a duet of her hit "The Best". He has also covered her hits "River Deep - Mountain High" and "Proud Mary". He said, "She bared her soul every single night on the stage, and it was like, it was painful and beautiful to watch at the same time. And that's what I liked, that's what really attracted me" (Source: "Jimmy Barnes on the Singers Who Influenced Him", National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, 2018).
It’s funny you mention the accent because Jimmy still has quite a decent amount of Scottish in his accent- it definitely isn’t your classic Aussie accent but somewhere between the two. When he goes to Scotland he comes back with a stronger accent 😂 You’d love his early days rock/reggae/soul band Cold Chisel
They say that your accent is set in stone at the age of ~12. I think Jimmy was ~ 6. Relocating as a youngster makes your accent malleable - think Barrack Obama for example. But Elizabeth was a satellite city that grew fast on UK migration and I imagine they had hybrid accents of their very own like they did in my migrant town, or sometimes Scots talked like aussies until they crossed the threshold of their hame.
I'm adding another vote for a review of 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby' by Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham & Johnny Diesel, if you're willing! Gotta be the live version from Hey Hey It's Saturday for the perfect a cappella harmony at the end - and with those three, the voices are just as good or better live than they are in the studio.
Really enjoying the Aussie reacts with John and Jimmy. If you wanted to give the female vocalists a try, have a look at Vanessa Amorosi and Tina Arena - both have been Aussie stand outs for decades.
@@FionaEm lots of great singers on this list, but from a technique point of view there's so much happening in this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VLQmwMhj4GA.html
Correct about Lost Boys. ‘Good Times’ was written by The Easybeats, which were the first Australian music band. Henry Vander and George Young went on to become a prolific songwriting duo. George also produced a few albums for his little brothers’ band AC/DC.
Tina Turner and Jimmy did a duet of "Simply the best" which shows off how similar their voices are and a younger Jimmy.... and Jimmy with Cold Chisel, his band, is phenomenal. They do a song called "Janelle " that is superb.
And Bow River and When the War is over. Also John Farnham & Jimmy & Diesel singing When something is wrong with my baby. All great songs. Great reaction & analysis. Merry Christmas, mate.
Definitely. I would suggest "Working Class Man" as a really good intro to the earlier Jimmie Barnes. I was at a Cold Chisel concert in 1981 when some ass threw a beer can at him. Jimmie simply dived off the stage and dealt to him Legend!!! :)
100% Eiterh some Chisel, or Early solo career. Either Flame Trees from Chisel, or Driving Wheels from solo would be great examples to check out IMHO The guitar in Driving wheels is perfection.
Lots of good suggestions here, Jimmy in Cold Chisel was a phenomenon. For your own listening pleasure check out Forever Now, Choir Girl, Flame Trees and Star Hotel. I think he’s still amazing. One of the great male rock vocalists.
I reckon I first saw Jimmy nearly 45 years ago. His voice has aged like a fine wine. Gone are the days when he would swagger around the stage of a sweaty pub with a bottle of vodka in his hand..
OMG... finally, Finally, FINALLY! Ever since the short announcing this was coming, I've been back to your channel 4x/day. Of course, he is the finest singer ever so... wow. More! Beth, give us moooooooooore!!! ☺☺
Thank you. He's been an icon here over several decades. Many say he often just scteams but I don't see it that way so always great to get a professional analysis on it. So glad you enjoyed this,& you're enthusiasm is infectious. Great reaction as usual. Love from Australia
Fun fact , Jimmy doesn’t use his vocal chords hitting those big notes. He has had tests done , he uses his throat and vocal folds . He has been singing like that for decades with no issues.
A couple have already mentioned these songs….a live version of ‘When Something is wrong with my Baby’ by John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes. ‘Riding with the Kings’ by Joe Bonamassa and Mahalia Barnes…Jimmy’s daughter. ‘Natural Woman’ by Vanessa Amorosi, who I think has three lungs, such is her power. (Guitar by Eurythmics Dave Stewart.) These are all brilliant versions of these songs and will take you further down the Rabbit hole of Australian music.
For most Aussies he has a slightly Glaswegian accent (having grown up there until a little boy). His older brother is a chap called “Swanee” who had a hit in Australia in the late 70s/early 80s with a similar voice. Please listen to Cold Chisel’s “When the War is Over”.
As an Aussie I struggle to hear the accent in Jimmy's singing. He still has an underlying Scottish accent, but there's definitely American inflection in his pronunciation. Listen to his brother, John Swan (Swanee); they're like peas in a pod vocally.
Hey! Thanks for the suggestion! I checked out Cold Chisel - Bow River did a reaction to it and loved it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H_I3n5_oqsw.html
Jimmy's daughter has been doing a lot with Joe too. She's been his backup singer for some toures now and they do a great song , Your riding with the King , where you really get to hear her.
Gotta love her looks of happiness and pure admiration of an awesome Blues performance. As far she enjoys doing this, we will have this channel to enjoy the music, the singing and her explanations as long as forever ❤️
Your reaction has made me cry - tears of joy at your happiness in discovering another great Australian talent. Have a look at John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes singing together with their version of "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". The one filmed in black and white. It is an absolute classic!
Go back to when Jimmy was lead singer in Cold Chisel you will open the door to Australian pub rock culture, bands like The Angles, Rose Tattoo, ACDC with Bon Scott the sound track of Australian pub culture of the 1970s through to the 1980s. There is a documentary on Albert records who recorded alot of these bands with Vander and Young being the producers and writers. Sky Hooks, Master Apprentice, Bill Thorpe and the Aztecs grand daddy of Australian rock and the great grandfather The wild one Johnny O'Keefe 1950s through to the mid 1970s before his death in 1978 after having 7 nervous breakdowns and a major car accident. John Paul Young ( love is in the air) Axim, You will be amazed have a wonderful Christmas and New Year regards Mick from Australia.
To really hear an Australian accent shine through check out the late, great Chrissy Amphlett with The Divinyls - something like Pleasure and Pain, Elsie, or I’m Jealous.
Jimmy has been singing like this for the last 50 years although if you want a complete contrast to this performance check out Wild Thing when he was with Cold Chisel, one of Australia’s iconic bands. Also Bow River and When The War is over are classics. He also has performed with his daughter Mahalia with Joe Bonamassa on Walking Up The Road and she has sung a duet with Joe on Riding With The Kings such a powerhouse performance from both of them.

So nice to see you vibing with the blues. Jimmy's bandmate from his Cold Chisel band days, Ian Moss, has a much more pronounced American flavour to his blues singing. I think most people would point to their 2003 live performance of Bow River where Moss takes vocal lead. I think you'd enjoy that. Completely different to that, I was listening to some Laura Branigan recently (Gloria, Ti Amo) and found her Solitare performance really interesting. She really lets the belt out on that song.

Hi Beth. So good to finally see your reaction to Jimmy Barnes, one of our greatest artists of all time. I would really love to see you do a critique of a young, rocker Jimmy Barnes and get an idea from you how he managed to sing the way he did back in those days. I would recommend listening to Working Class Man (official version) as it showcases his full range and is also an aussie anthem!
I so enjoy your reactions, because you provide such interesting information on the mechanics of singing. I am so enjoying your reactions with our Australian singers.
I've got into John , Jimmy and other Aussie artists the last two years. Thank you so much for giving these great singers I listen! Mahalia Barnes is also incredible by the way. Please watch more of John and jimmy. Also Vanessa omarosi, Tina arena, and Delta goodrem are worth a listen.
this was amazing. As an Australian, i guess I always detect the small Scottish inflections when I hear him speak, but after watching this I can really hear what Beth hears - the Australian accent specifics. He is certainly unique, has an incredible range, and a lovely way of switching between his natural textures. Amazing singer who i've become more and more appreciative of as I age.
Ah Beth did you catch the still strong Scottish accent from Jimmy? Yep he was born in Scotland. and even after all these years we can still hear that accent every now and then break through his now Aussie accent lol You might like to check out one of the best duets he did with John Farnham from a 'live' performance on a TV show called Hey Hey it's Saturday. I can't wait for your reaction on that one. Love from Australia ps I'm posting this link to Jimmy
You think this is good, you should hear him with his band "Cold Chisel" doing songs live during their ringside tour. For vocal quality, "When the War is Over" is iconic, but "You got nothing I want" also shows incredible power, range and control. Do yourself a favour and check them out 👍 Thanks for a great reaction 😃

Great review Beth. The other musical force behind this song is its writer Don Walker. Don is one of Australia's greatest song writers and has written many masterpieces for Jim with their band Cold Chisel and Jim's solo career. Don is the keyboard player and primary song writer in Chisel. The emotional hits in the song structure as you described are a common feature of Don's work. Star Hotel and Letter to Allan by Cold Chisel would be other great examples.

@@absinthedream9668 Jimmy will tell you he is a proud Australian through and through. His musical background and influence is Australian pub rock. Nothing Scottish about him.
So funny (interesting) you talking about Jimmy's Aussie accent.... I'm an Aussie and hear so much of Jimmy's Scottish accent mixed in with the Aussie. Jimmy, both by himself, and with band Cold Chisel are absolute legends here. Oh, you haven't even scratched the surface with the talent we have here.

Its interesting what you say about Jimmy's accent. You should do a quick search for him being interviewed. He sounds very Scottish to my Australian ears. Also I'd love to see you react to him singing "Fire and rain" with Marcia Hines.
This was a 58 year old Jimmy just wait until you hear him in his earlier year's with the band Cold Chisel in the 70's and then his solo year's from the 80's until now.

The last time I heard Jimmy Barnes was on a cover of the Easybeats song, Good Times, that he recorded with INXS back in '87, for the Lost Boys soundtrack. His voice has aged incredibly well, he still sounds just as great as he did back then. Btw, I'm also a huge B.B. King fan and I had a chance to see him live in '06, during his 80th birthday tour. Due to poor health, he had to perform sitting down, but he still held the entire room in the palm of his hand for the entire show. Not only was he one of the greatest guitarists of all time and a really great singer, but he was an amazing performer.
Jimmy is a treasure, and his voice touches the heart. Check out his daughter Mahalia Barnes, and her song with Joe Bonamassa Ridin with the kings. She has soul and grit.
Jimmy is a national treasure. His band Cold Chisel were blessed with two lead vocalists... Ian Moss (Guitarist) being the other. You should check out Ian singing/playing Georgia (On My Mind), live 😁👍 Hearing Joe and Jimmy on this track has me dreaming of that big gig in the sky someday... where a youthful Robert Plant and Gary Moore combine to sing and play the blues.

Beth, have a look at the live performance of BB King and Gary Moore performing The Thrill is Gone. The guitar duel is fantastic and I've never seen BB having so much fun ! He loved every minute. Watching you in New Zealand, by the way.
Great analysis - you remind me so much of the actress Harriet Dyer. Like others have said below, I'd love to hear your take on WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY. Hearing Jimmy and John together would be enjoyable for you I'm sure.
Jimmy has a daughter that is one of the backup singers for Joe Bonamassa. Her name is Mahalia Barnes. There is at least one professional video where she duets with her dad and she was the lead singer for a Betty Davis (the funk singer) covers album with Joe on guitar.
If you like Jimmy doing soul, then check out him and John Farnham doing When Something is Wrong With My Baby. But if you do, watch the live Hey, Hey it's Saturday version. The a capella at the end is magical.
JB is a brilliant (and very underrated) vocalist. He has a very versatile voice and he's got better as he's got older. Have seen him live a couple of times (solo and with Cold Chisel) and he's brilliant live.

You know the best cover band in the world is from South Australia. Check out 'The Hindley Street Country Club' and 'Singit Live' channels on youtube. Actually they are more of a collective of musicians than a band. They choose the best performers for a particular cover and record it live (kind of Steely Dan of cover bands) They have around ~20 vocalists to choose from and they are all extraordinary.
Yes! Been looking forward to this. Jimmy Barnes is a legend. I've been listening to his music since I was a kid. He's one of the singers I heard as a kid that made me want to sing. Looking back I think a lot of the voices I love remind me a little of his voice. He definitely shaped what I like in music
You gotta listen to an earlier version/studio version of this song. He's a bit older here and playing it quite safe. His belt after "baby you know what I mean" is incredible.
You've now got to do 'Farnsey & Barnesy' (John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes) singing 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby'. The best live version on RU-vid is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8gzH9qk8cOc.html
If guitar makes you happy please check out Diesel. ‘Cry in shame’ or ‘come to me’ or ‘man alive’ or… just whatever he’s amazing. Also jimmy barnes brother in law and other mentioned shows up in a barnsey and farnsey duet
As previous comments have noted, Jimmy has a done great job of adapting his style as his voice has deepened and gotten rougher. And over the years the great unwashed mark him down as a screamer. He was WAY more than that. In his twenties he had the voivocr of an angel (when he chose to do do) Yes Flame Trees and yes other songs, but perhaps no better example than in Four Walls from Cold Chisel's 1980 album East. btw both Four Walls in 1980 and Stone Cold (1993) are written by the absolute legendary Australian songwriter (and Cold Chisel member) Don Walker. This is Four Walls ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qIqu7IOPE6k.html
I wondered as you were reacting to a few Aussie voices, if you had reacted to Vanessa Amorosi? I scrolled through your vids and couldn't find her. I'm not asking for a reaction, though. I was thinking that you may appreciate her range. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HJa3a8SRrCM.html
We really want to hear your Aussie accent. Don''t be scared of offending us, that's impossible, we LOVE hearing people try to do our accent. At least give it a try anyway lol.
Jimmy was actually a rock icon, and his band Cold Chisel was at the forefront of the uniquely Australian “Pub Rock” genre. Have a listen to “Khe Sahn”, “Flame Trees”, or the live version of “Bow River”, which also showcases the vocal talents of Chisel’s guitarist Ian Moss. Also you need to hear Jimmy sing a duet with his good mate John Farnham. “When something is wrong with my baby” is a song much like this, you will love it. Interesting you mentioned his Aussie accent, Jimmy actually speaks with a Scottish accent! It is not as strong when he sings but it is there when he speaks. He was born in Scotland I believe.

I could be wrong, but I think you reacted to Jimmy Barns and John Farnham singing 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby', but if you haven't, you definitely need to. The studio version is very good, but the live version is outstanding!
