I caught a tonne of queen ants during a nuptial flight and I have some great plans for them! I placed each queen into a test tube setup to give them the perfect conditions to found an ant colony. Some of the queens dropped their wings, but there really was no guarantee any of the queens would succeed at colony founding, however something I saw in one of the test tubes truly shocked me. I’ve seen many nuptial flights here in California and honestly it’s a great sight to see them mate and settle down onto dirt after many days. But the day after the flight I always see littered dead male ants throughout my ranch. Good food for the young chicks of my chickens tho.

This happens once or twice a year where I live. There's so many ants that we can't turn on our lights when it turns dark and during the day, as weird as it might sound, we go out to compete with the birds catching queen ants to eat. Yes, to eat XD

It’s not a spider, if it was the spider bites wouldn’t hurt. However, if the spider was bigger/a tarantula (which does pack a painful bite), he would’ve felt the individual legs crawling on his arms. A centipede goes by the same knowledge as well. I’m guessing a wasp, bee or a katydid.

This cottage experience is going to give you a clue regarding living in the Ant House, except you'll have the luxury of a modern, typical city home (in the posh end of town lol), with all of the expected utilities, but with the forest a few steps outside. Btw, did this nuptial flight give you the same idea it gave me? Find a suitable place near to, but not surrounding the immediate vicinity of the Ant House (you don't want to attract wild ants, especially ones like fire ants into or on the outside walls of your home! Imagine if they got inside!), where you can hang some lights, perhaps including black/ultraviolet lights, which will attract insects each time you switch them on. It might be the easiest way to capture queens of species you don't even know are in the area. What made me think of this was when you showed the light of your camera, I had a flashback to a science series on the BBC. It was either Sir David Attenborough or Prof Brian Cox (it's possible they've both done it!). In the one I'm thinking of, they were in a rain forest to film the local invertebrate life, but they weren't having much luck during the day. Then they met a "lone" scientist at the hostel (or wherever it was - it was inside the forest and designed for scientific studies), not part of a typical team, who worked at night. He told them to put up a white sheet and a blue light, in the dark, and hang around for a few minutes. The sheet had dozens of mostly flying invertebrates, including stick insects IIRC, of many species in no time! Just think, out where there's no artificial light interfering with the blue light, you could be discovering a ton of species you didn't know we're there, queens on nuptial flights and maybe new species! What do you think?

I am going to guess it is a species of assassin bug, sometimes known as a "kissing bug," when a particular species decides to feed on human blood! They are big, and the pain from their bite is legendary!

Wow! Good luck with your potential colony! They're the "immortal" ants that have unrelated males, aren't they? Forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm fascinated with invertebrate life (and I love Mikey's set ups and videos), but I'm not even close to being a hobbyist let alone an expert 😂

I used to see QUEEN ants on my balcony from many years, but this year I caught them, & they layed eggs😃 They have Ninatics too

When I looked into my Maurader ant Test tube,I saw Soldiers!It meant that my colony was growing rapidly.Thank you AntsCanada For Inspiring me to become an Ant keeper.Also What Bit you on your arm may be Either A trap draw ant queen. Edit:Maybe we can restart the Drawbreakers!
