I have to wonder how many other people have $750.00 chippers that they have not used and will never know…..Like you always say use your shit…..Great review Erica.
I highly suspect that a lot of knife makers don’t bother doing proper heat treats because they know that most buyers don’t use their knives for anything beyond cutting paper or simply admiring. This is especially true for high dollar collectible knives - zero hard use.
Maybe .. benchmade’s heat treat on damasteel gold class knives is the best I’ve ever had and I’m a rare one that will baton with a gold class knife 😂 use your shit
Prices on Benchmade are going to need to drop shortly. I edc a Benchmade 940 in s30v and I love it but it’s not overly impressive. I got it bc it was my dream knife but for the cost to value ratio, there’s some to be desired although it’s very well built. And yes I USE my knife for edc, farm work.
There is a thing called value for money. Benchmade have lost all contact with that concept. I wouldn't dream of paying for anything from their custom shop. I want to get a satisfactory bang for my buck. The 750 dollar chippy blade doesn't deserve a second chance. I'd send Moran back his knife and tell him to refund fully the person who bought it for me in the first place.
Ganzo etc seem to make decent clones, at least for the price. This absurd knife price fad is a joke. Maybe just get the maker to confirm the addy, use insurance and send that rip off 750$ back.
Just crawled out of bed after going to a hockey game last night but still got my soddy jr and my 940 today along with my Leatherman rebar and streamlight stylus pro flashlight. Great video sorry to hear the knife is still chipping but i bet you keep working through it and sharpening it itll get stronger as the metal thickens
I own three Benchmade knives in S30V and I have been disappointed in all of them. Right out of the box they were dull. I literally have knives that were $50 that were much sharper out of the box. They also hold an edge way better then my BM knives. I stopped carrying a Benchmade because I have never been able to get them sharp. I even took them to a professional knife maker to have him sharpen the knives. They were sharp for a couple of days of minimal use and that was it. My $50 knives with the same amount of use are sharp for a couple months. Lastly, the screws holding the clips on my Benchmade knives became loose after a few days of use. The clips fell off completely on two knives and I lost them. Thankfully the knife dropped into my pocket when the clips fell off. I contacted BM and they told me to apply Loctite to the screws. I responded with “for a $300 dollar knife I would at least expect the clips to stay on”. Thanks for the 15 degree tip. I will try it, but not holding my breath.
I'm going out pheasant hunting all week, so for the first walk today I'm carrying a Buck 110 Alaskan Guide with S30V and a Case Russlock with bonestag covers. Have a great Sunday, Erica!
At the moment I’m carrying a mini Bugout with black micarta flytanium scales. Best work knife, I have, I don’t worry about damaging it or if I loose it, I can replace it.
Hard no on Benchmade custom 940. Only for the steel selection. I carry and m4 940 I don't need the down grade. If they like go to cpm154, magnacut, cruwear, cpm s45vn. I would throw my money at them
Its most likely a heat-treating gone wrong, yes. He should quench temper it twice, if this particular steel has a tendency to form hard carbide lumps. Also, this problem is normally affecting the very edge, where its the thinnest. After using the knife for a while, and getting into deeper layers of steel by sharpening, the chipping may stop. Or, it may also continue 😂😂 if the treat is completely out of whack
Absolutely love the 940, I've got aftermarket flytanium purple g10 scales on mine. Made the trip from Wisconsin to Alabama with me its literally my everything knife from work to steak knife lol.
I've been carrying my Ontario Knife Co. Model 1 with Orange scales and black clip. Did He say if you could put your own edge on it till you can send it back for the new blade E. Guess the next test is PUMPKIN CARVING for that cpm154. Later!
My new favorite super steel is 1075 😎. My dog is real old and having trouble getting his rawhide roll started, so I batoned it in half with my kephart. Did absolutely nothing to my knife and still shaving sharp. My hands hurt from the shock from beating my knife through the rawhide. I’d never try that with most “super steels”.
Sucks about the chipping but at least he is planning on making it right. I can appreciate you giving him time to move and get settled before you send it out. Carrying Spyderco Lil Temperance lightweight in K390. Also a full size recovered Soddy for a customer. Trying to break it in some.
I have a 940-1 that I want to love. I'm such a big fan of carbon fiber. But I can't seem to get a good ratio of good action and low blade play on it lately. I picked up a Small Sebenza with the black micarta and Insingo blade in magnacut. I've been carrying that pretty exclusively for a little while. It's great at not drawing unnecessary attention at work. Also never stop with the your mom jokes.
Ya, I get not wanting to risk loosing the knife by sending it to someone who's business is in a bit of turmoil right now. Fwiw I'd be tempted to give him a heads up in his DMs though, keep the lines of communication open an all that, rather than risk ending up with an awkward situation further down the line.
If he is gona replace it I would definitely use it for all my task and see how it holds up. For 750 that chips to easily hopefully it’s just a bad heat treatment or a bad batch
Sorry to see you chipped that nice knife. I wonder if the custom shop allows for a partially serrated 940. I'd love to get an orange partially serrated 940 to put in my bike's onboard oh shit kit
I’ve been sharpening my blades at 15-17 it’s the sweet spot. And I hate polished knifes they just seem sharp I like a toothy edge. I agree with ya on the toothy edge
The 940 never really grabbed me but your description of why it is great does kind of sway me a bit but honestly I'm not a big fan of BM's S30V. My Bugout always seems to have a micro-chip or two despite rather light use.
I went and customized a 945. I had a custom Bugout that I gave to a friend just recently. I was going to get a Mini Crooked River because they finally updated the options when I saw the 945 and that was more than $100 cheaper so I went with that. It should be in by the 31st, but Benchmades products are getting to be way way too expensive. I don’t really believe a Custom Mini Crooked River is worth the $350 I was going to pay before tax and shipping. It kinda makes me sad I may never be comfortable spending that much cash for the knife I really have wanted for several years now.
Happy Sunday! Sucks you chipped it again! So far my Benchmade Osborne has ben beyond solid for me. Did you kill a batch of sour dough with yours? LOL!!
I have a 940 with “plastic” handle. Although I think it is the ugliest knife I’ve ever seen, I feel compelled to get the iconic Benchmade - Osborne 940 with green aluminum handle, but it’s expensive as hell and won’t be available until Thanksgiving. I just might have to give up my obsession and stay with my 940 and with the mini-Osborne 945 that I acquired for my knife collection.
most of my knives are cold steel knives - i have them all - everyone gets into the rotation - none cost as much as that knife you showed or has ever broken in the slightest way from cutting cardboard - i probably dont know what I'm talking about but maybe the steel is to brittle - and to thin to take real world use - like a straight razor - cuts great but cant take any hard use beyond cutting fine objects - your blade cant take impact or being twisted - you should get your money back and buy a cold steel brute and cut all the paper you want
The osborne design is timeless. Even after twenty years it looks unique because every other top edc knife features a tall, thin blade and a frame lock. But then that's the opinion of someone who prefers a strong and versatile knife to something only meant to slice at which point a razor knife wins.
If you keep sharpening it and it gets to thicker ground metal it might quit chipping as badly. I had a maker you def know and love make me a chopper and it was ground too thin I broke out a huge part of the edge and had to send it back to him. He ground it up to the thicker metal portion of the blade and I’ve had zero issues since
I've seen that same chipping behavior on Benchmade and Spyderco blades on cardboard. Bad heat treatment in addition to excessive grinding. Just weak metal to begin with. It's nothing you did. But honestly for $750 it should not be doing that. When you do send it, insure it for no less than TRIPLE the value. That way if it gets lost you are going to get the $$$$.
@acid6urns that's not acceptable. These benchmades and spydercos right around $200, you jave to sharpen them to get burnt steel off? How is this ok? We pay good money for a usa made knife and they disrespect us like that?
@@wis1024 hey, moron. every company EVER sharpens their knives on belts. when you make literally hundreds of knives at a time, it is literally impossible to sit and use a sharpening wheel on every knife. if you can’t sharpen a fucking knife you shouldn’t be crying about ANYTHING relating to knives. you mfs will cry over ANYTHING if your knife isn’t perfect. you know how much knives like you’re asking for cost? $500+ if you want perfection spend the 500+ dollars on a chris’s reeve or a fucking hinderer dude. again i will reiterate that EVERY SINGLE KNIFE COMPANY that isn’t a custom company uses belt sanders to make factory edges, and a factory edge is NEVER GOING TO BE ANYWHERE CLOSE to what is achievable by hand. it’s literally the LEAST important thing on the damn knife, you can fix a burnt edge genius. in literally maybe 30 mins.
@acid6urns Really retard? You have to spend $500+ to not have a burnt edge? 😂 you know you can use a belt grinder and not burn the edge too right? It is possible dummy. Look into it, not all knives come with burnt edges. Thats like saying when you can buy a house but remember unless you payed 1 mil for it youll need to put the roof on yourself..... did your brain fall out your ear man 😂😂😂😂
I stopped buying junk knives like benchmade because im to hard on my knives the benchmade knives are basically the same as my crkt knives but overpriced I dont care about steel as well.
These new super steels are kinda silly. From what i can tell they all have potential for being chippy. Im a big carbon steel fan and the only time it seems to chip is if i hit a nail lol
@ericasedc That might be true for a steel designed specifically for toughness, but it's not true for ALL super steels. Most are harder and more prone to chipping than more traditional steels. That's not arguable, you dont get carbide tear out with steels that dont have carbides. They can be chippy but it would have to be heat treated to high or ground way to thin. Im just saying i dont appreciate being called a liar for sharing my experience with steels lol It is my experience that super steels in general are more chippy which seems to be a fairly common experience. I did state this is "from what i can tell," meaning in my experience. I dont mean to attack your point of view, just sharing mine.
@ericasedc also i haven't used magnacut, but from what I've read and heard, it does seem like they are finally getting away from the hard to sharpen easy to chip trend. Which is a huge win-win for everyone. Sounds like magnacut should be the new standard.
After all the comments like the small Sebenza being equal to Mila Kunis, and getting excited as yo mama on a Wednesday. I've finally been won over, ill subscribe
@@ericasedcWait a minute, I thought you were with my mom?? Now listen if your not spending quality time with mom she's going to start getting cranky and mean and we can't have that!!
