'I Could Have Died!' | Marty McSorley's HORRIFIC Attack On Donald Brashear

Throughout hockey history, few players have epitomized “goon” like Marty McSorley.
As the sun was setting on his career, however, McSorley went overboard on a tense night in Vancouver, committing an act of on-ice violence so reckless that it not only earned him a dubious place in NHL history, but effectively ended his career.

Why is nobody talking about Brashears helmet? When he landed on ice, the helmet was off. If he had used the helmet strap as it is created for, he wouldn´t been injured. Helmet is used to protect the head, but players, even today don´t tighten the strap.
@dicksonfranssen
@dicksonfranssen 3 месяца назад
The strap is there for one reason, should be a penalty at least for kids who don't wear it correctly. I cracked 3 helmets racing dirt bikes, then was a goalie for 15 years. Now I'm paying for all those concussions, trigeminal neuralgia, cluster headaches, Tinnitus etc. I admired Gretzky but not that stupid Jofa helmet. This is all a big joke to some people.

Mcsorley took it too far, but Brashear injuring the Bruins goalie and then mocking the bemch earned him some serious payback. Never go after a goalie! People fail to mention the reason McSorley was losing his mind was because Brashear ran the goalie. Thanks for including that part! Brashear would rather taunt the bench after he sent the goalie off on a strecher then fight Marty again. But the coaches are just as much to blame. Canucks send the goon out with 30 seconds left , So of course Boston has to send out McSorley . Had Brashear just fought him again it never would have happened. And besides all that, he didnt even slash him that hard, I been double handed tomahawked right over the head and I didnt go down. Dave Browns shots to the head of Tomas Sandstrum were way worse .....And he did it twice!!!

McSorely was pure garbage. On every team for which he ever played. Incredible strength and stamina, to be sure. But pure garbage If he’d have been better coached, like say Scott Stevens was to control his goonish tendencies, he could’ve been a helluva player - Almost like Stevens, who himself started off as little more than a goon but was crafted into a top defenseman by playing smarter and letting his notoriety do most of the work for him. McSorely clearly had the skills to become such a player, but his fighting was deemed a more valuable asset to teams like the Oilers, Kings and Rangers. Interestingly enough, ALL of which retained his services to make sure no one ate Gretzky’s lunch at school. And while Brashear will never be mistaken for an altar boy, McSorely’s assault on him was beyond gutless. Right up there with some of the biggest stains in the NHL, along with some of the ones mentioned in the comments.

The number of people defending McSorley in this comment section is hilarious. Yes, Brashear was also a POS at times who did bad things off the ice, on the ice, and ran their goalie, but so did McSorley many times off the ice, on the ice, etc. and that still doesn't justify assault with a weapon, even if he meant to hit his shoulders which sounds like an excuse. Also, tell me a single enforcer, grinder, power forward, agitator, etc. who hasn't gone too far, ran the goalie, etc. to get under the opponents skin? Literally all of them have and McSorley has been all bark no bite in other incidents too with refusing to fight others while talking trash. And him refusing to fight him there isn't being cowardly. That's being smart for his team when they need it earlier in the game. It's McSorley's fault for taking the bait. This is like the people debating between Marchand or Burrows being worse all over again and when both of them are equal with their past incidents. Furthermore, for the people who are bringing up that off-ice incident involving Brashear, that was an accusation which never went anywhere. There was a verbal argument that led to the police showing up. There were no serious injuries on the accuser or punches thrown and he didn't press charges. He did get into other incidents off the ice since retirement too and is low on money, but so have many tough guys in that era now. It's what happens when they were used, suffered drug issues, CTE which McSorley gave him more of, etc. and then are discarded. McSorley has gotten into similar off-ice altercations too and hasn't done too well for himself since retirement either. So has the majority of the NHL tough guys including some Hall of Famers. That's the world and if you go outside. He's still respected by many in his 50s playing in the LNAH. He's had issues and incidents, but that isn't him being a terrible person, that's him struggling. He's doing better for himself today. McSorley was a POS and that's all there is to it. Some of you sound like the same people defending Voynov when he was banned lol.

What is it with Vancouver and dirty hits ? The Bertuzzi-Moore incident happened there too 😮
@ColeSATurner
@ColeSATurner Месяц назад
You're saying this as if Vancouver hasn't been on the other end of the dirty hits the majority of the time outside of the Bertuzzi-Moore incident? And let's get the facts straight with that. What Bertuzzi did was disgusting, but it's already been proven that Moore has likely lied about most of the situation. The punch wasn't what did the majority of the damage and it's been proven he dove to exaggerate it. It was the players dogpiling him that did it. Also, the medical records they released and the many ones he and his lawyer claims he has but refuses to show publicly have pretty much confirmed that he's lying about the majority of the damage he suffered. He was a trash grinder whose career was almost over and soon retiring so he used this to get lots of money out of Bertuzzi. There's no proof of the majority of his claims and people around him say he's lying about many of them such as his breathing, sleep, and light sensitivity issues or say that he was healed from them a few years later despite his claims of him still dealing with it to this day. He didn't deserve to get anywhere near as much as he did out of Bertuzzi for it and it basically ended a possible HHOF career as a result with him not being able to play his style of game in the league ever again. For that reason, I have no sympathy for him.

It's pretty wild how such reprehensible and unforgivable behavior was essentially tolerated, or at least punished very differently compared to today. I got into hockey in the 90-91 season in my tween years and saw more of the tail end of it but the 90s were still pretty brutal. Essentially anytime Scott Stevens was still playing was still the brutal, intent to injure era.

It should have not involved the police. A 10 game suspension would probably been fine. McSorley lost his mind for a moment and went over the line as has happened many times in the game. Still, Brashear, no choir boy, was taunting and showing no class at all. And he knew better. He knew the culture and unwritten rules. Hockey, going way back before my day in the 70s, was a violent game. Everyone knew the danger. It was part of the attraction. That feeling before starting was palpable. A total rush, unknown and unwanted by the current generation. Oh, it was good. Competition was fierce. The game policed itself. Skilled players were balanced out by guys less skilled but willing to look past their fear and take on whatever came at them. I was always a small guy (140-145) but never turned down a fight. It always felt good to know that you "showed up". Today, in our risk averse society, the focus on everything is on safety. That's what the people want and I'm an anachronism. I get that. But they took a great game that was almost primal in its attraction and turned it into figure skating with a puck. Yes, the skill level today is better than ever, and no one ever has to worry about defending themselves or their mates. Not saying that it is better or worse; it's just 2 separate sports now. I miss the hockey that was played for the first 80 years or so and am bored by the game of today. Others, dare I say most, do not. Masculinity is being slowly drilled out of boys...it's toxic, violent, scary, or whatever. Or so they say. Today's men believe it's honorable to hide behind an authority figure, even a woman, when facing danger. Old time hockey and its attendant moral structure are no longer valued, not in the sport or in life. And that is a shame.

I met Marty after a game in LA in the winter of 2014. We talked about this incident and he stated to me in the most sincere way that he meant to hit Donald in the shoulder to get his attention. I honestly don't think this dude had any intentions to hurt Brasher the way he did. They were both enforcers in a league that glorified them for what they did. His mistake was the pinnacle to why hockey has been pussified since. I think Marty only wanted to fight and not hurt him that way. It's too bad that his legacy had to end up with this black eye because of an honest mistake. Those who know, know.....And Brasher knows it was an honest mistake also.

I remember this game well as a fan in Vancouver. I didn’t think it then and I don’t think now that the slash was the dirtiest thing I ever saw. It’s not even close. Dirty? Sure. Suspendible? Naturally. It was pretty surprising to me that Brashear would be seriously injured from the slash. I imagine it had more to do with him falling and hitting the back of his head on the ice, with his loose helmet flying off. The suspension was extreme mostly because the optics were so bad, and the video got so much attention - and it embarrassed the NHL enough that they chose an extreme response to protect their brand. The attention in Vancouver also led police to lay charges. Let’s be clear. If injuring a player was to be prosecuted as a rule, the docket would be full hockey players at all levels. This case has very strong parallels to the Bertuzzi incident. In that case, a player who was expected to fight due to giving a concussion to the Canucks captain in a previous game refused to do so repeatedly - and exposed himself to the sort of action that fighting is supposed to replace . Moore was put on the ice by his coach just before the end of game specifically to face the music lest the Canucks take their anger out on the teams star players. It was expected of Moore to fight and he wouldn’t. In both cases, if you asked NHL players of the day off the record , they would not condemn either player for their actions. The reason being that they or their teammates could have also found themselves in this predicament. A player will be held accountable one way or another, and bad things happen when you refuse to be accountable. That’s a reality that many casual fans and the wider public doesn’t understand. These unofficial codes about fighting are about the players self regulating fighting on their own terms and for their protection. Marty was part of the old school tough guy that followed the code about being an enforcer and fighting. In Brashear’s position, it was absolutely expected that you would answer the bell if you are taunting your opponent. The players know it and generally accepted it. Right or wrong, Brashear opted to do the very things he knew would infuriate McSorely and his refusal to answer the bell - just as Steve Moore did in his incident. Had they stuck to the accepted players norms, each would have been far better off. That fact is often lost on fans. That’s certainly how the NHL players would see it and the outside observers opinions don’t matter much if we are being honest. They don’t have to suffer the consequences of what happens when unofficial codes on fighting are ignored and things devolve into widespread mercenary actions of loose cannons. That’s what the codes are designed to prevent. People outside of hockey will say their is just no place for such violence in sports and will condemn anything that is violent. They are re entitled to their opinion but they don’t have to live with the unintended consequences of “fixing” the problem. As such, the players will simply ignore them.
