About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Your wife is just the cutest thing ever! Best part of the video is at the end where she is holding Rosie with that "child-like" facial expression!!! It took me back to the joyous times of my childhood when I would name every new animal that came into my life-an experience one never forgets! Thank you for the smile and trip down memory lane!!

Tip from the Aussie Plant operator: Keep your load as low as possible ALL the time. That's not to say you can't raise it if for instance, you need to lift a long load over a set of gate posts, but if you do need to, only raise it for as short a time as possible. Even when empty its best practice to keep the bucket or forks close to the ground. Buckecutting edge t or fork tipss tilted back slightly. Fork tips can be a hazard. Dont tip them back too much. Ideally the tips of the (empty) forks should be 2 to 3 inches above the ground, but that may need to be more if in uneven ground.

@@keptinkaos6384 If only I had a tractor. I have never owned one but for 40 odd years I drove machines owned by others. (Loaders, Dozers, Tractors. On the surface and underground). Things like that are second nature to me but if you don't know, you don't know. I didnt intend my comment to be in anyway critical and I believe from the responses here nobody saw it that way... and I'm pleased.

Constructive words of wisdom. I would add, that it is OFTEN better to drive in reverse with a bulky load than it is to try to see adequately over or around a big load like this one. You will find you have a lot less fear or uncertainty about what you might hit when you have a clear field of view driving backward to your lay down spot.
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead 3 года назад
Great work! Those MX machines are super impressive. Pro tip. If you carry the load lower and more parallel to the ground, the tractor will be more stable while transporting heavy loads. The higher you go the higher the overall center of gravity.
@davidelias2941
@davidelias2941 3 года назад
Agreed, even if it is a light load it is a good habit to form. That way if you start getting into heavier loads the possible Oops moments will be fewer and less expensive/dangerous.

Exactly right, carry stuff as low as you can and just slightly tilted backwards. Higher is way more unstable and also a coop or a shed is much more likely to be destroyed if dropped from 5-6 feet instead of 1, which it may very well survive unscathed.

@PTRMAN 3 года назад

It's an amazing feeling to finally have all your sacrifice and saving money pay off and get a tractor. It'll be in an upcoming episode on my channel, but I just invested in a John Deere 3039 with a full cab, loader and snow blower. All my sacrifice and saving paid off too and I feel so good about it. I can do things that I wasn't able to do before. I'm a novice tractor operator too as it does have a bit of a learning curve. Great episode Morgan.

Randomly reminded me of mid-august over here where I am. It's the time when dozens of storks gather and form large groups (30+ birds) before flying south for the winter. It's also the time when combines and tractors work in fields, so the birds literally swarm the machines without any fear because of all the tasty things that get unearthed by them. Normally they just walk behind them like infantry taking cover behind a tank.

I think the main reason I keep coming back and watching - apart from loving the birds and the dog and all that - is to watch a guy taking on challenges, making mistakes and figuring out how to fix them, getting on with things in a sensible and energetic way. It's the figuring-out-ness of it that appeals. This taking on a big project in the real world, breaking it down into smaller tasks, working out how to do the tasks, learning things, and doing stuff. Our virtual life, in which in the real world we just sit in our chairs watching other people do things, seems like a shadow of reality in comparison. It makes me want to get on with my own stuff in a more realistic way. It's really helpful.

My favorite moment in this entire video was when you looked at Allison and asked her what the little hen's name was, and she took that pause, and there was a moment between you, and between her and the chicken, and that is why I watch these videos. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was fun to watch you move that chicken coop! But those little moments are what I'm really here for. That and you saying "Rosalind" and Allison saying "or Rosie!" and we're all pretty sure that chicken's actual name is Rosie. heh. Hello Rosie! Glad you're safe!

Thanks for taking caution with the Tractor. A couple newer guy suggestions. Run the blades much closer to the ground, basically a foot or two up just tall enough to clear anything you might hit. Keep the blades flat, when I was teaching people to drive, I would say run them back maybe 5-10 degrees back. If you go too far, like you did it could land in your face or tilt the tractor. Admittedly you weren't going to overload the front, but if that was a lot heavier you could have regardless of ut's max capacity. The higher the forks, the less you can carry. You are doing awesome man, keep it up, you got this.

Fun fact...I think you were referring to your friend Al Lumnah's prowess in moving things with the tractor? I watched an old video of his and learned his name is Alcid (spelling?) and not Alfred! Love to watch your happenings on the farm!

When you move things with your front end loader, it would be best to pickthings up just clear of the ground, you willbe able to see where your going as well as less of a chancetipping your tractor over

Morgan, What I take from this is that your woodwork isn't as bad as it seems!🙂. You can pick it up and move it and it stays in one piece. Mazeltov! Regards Stephen.

Snow, not a problem you have the tractor and plow, just get your adjustment right so it doesn’t eat into the turf, remember use float on the bucket settings for levelling

The most important thing is to be able to learn from our own mistakes and you found the chicken afterwards. Lesson learned, let's keep going! =)

I haven't read all the comments, but in case that happens again (and it's happened to most of us!), you might consider teaching the chickens to come like you do the ducks. All it takes is one of your special calls -- mine is "laaay-dies!" with the word drawn out so that it's distinctive, and some scratch or some other treat. Once they make the connection between that call and a treat, it doesn't take long for them to come running every time they hear you. I suppose you've heard of this method before, but it could have really helped you that day under the circumstances. Anyway, so glad it worked out well!

From now on any of your major animal structures should have fork holes under them for ease of moving them. If you ever decide that you want to move your stuff around. Better to be proactive than reactive. Love your videos..keep up the great work. 👍 👏
