I was just thinking you guys are giving advice about safety and nobody even put a life vest on. glad you guys made it but that was silly. Before you sped into the storm the first thing you should of done was throw a vest on.

Bless their hearts! They're still at that young age where they know everything and I hope they read these comments and took them to heart. It's almost irresistible not to make fun of them because they are presenting themselves as wise, experienced, and seaworthy pros when they obviously have not been taught to be out that far in the ocean. Like I said, I hope they took the advice in the comments even though they were being teased. We were all that age at one time.

Did you have life jackets on board? If so, WHY DID YOU NOT HAVE THEM ON RIGHT AWAY? You guys put yourselves, and others in unnecessary danger...

My older brother was a commercial fisherman working in Georgian Bay when a huge storm hit and capsized his boat and put him in freezing cold water which caused him to die from hypothermia. His youngest daughter was born a month later. Weather can change real fast if you are inland on a lake or in the ocean. I live in Nova Scotia and we joke about the weather by saying wait 5 minutes and it will change. My brother would have been 55 on the 6th of June.

12 yrs ago I worked in a huge casino vessel / ship ( 70,000 tonnes ) Once our vessel reached the South China sea ( from Singapore) and Infront of us we can see clear a huge big black cloud with thunderstorms . Once in it , the wind blow hard and the rough sea waves makes the ship moving crazy.... I've experienced and I realized how small we are , and how big the sea is...🌹😎

I literally grew up on boats, as a live-aboard, on a 60 foot schooner. Before that schooner, we lived on a 27 foot sloop. I can say from first-hand, personal experience... The first thing is what most of you said... LIFEJACKETS DIPSHIT!! Second, get the boat's load situated DOWN... poles, gear, people, EVERYTHING down as low as possible, preferrable in the bilge. Third, DON'T run for shore. It's too late. You're head to the wind AND the waves... you can't see, so don't try. KEEP your head to the wind and waves. Keep your speed and trim set to hold the bow up as high as possible. On my 16 foot Sea Ray, we got caught by a wind storm on Riffe Lake, in southwest Washington State, Riffe is only about 20 miles long, but it's got a veturi effect about 2/3 up lake, so your wind speed can go from 5kts on the west end to 35kts on the east end. I was in 30+kts wind, 4'+ breaking waves, and no shelter anywhere but down or across the wind. We got the gear resettled, lifejackets under real jackets, (they make GREAT insulation) and I got the boat just on step, but not on plane, so it was plowing along nose high. Then I trimmed the bow up even higher, and we stopped taking anything but spray over the bow. That's all the faster I went. I couldn't run from the storm, I couldn't get to shelter, so I didn't try. It took almost 4 hours to get to the ramp 16 miles away. Our only concern was fuel, since at that posture in the water I was at almost maximum fuel consumption. ALWAYS plan for the worst. Always PREPARE for the worst. Always EXPECT the worst. Because if she can, Mother Nature will kill your ass. These guys paniced and ran. They're lucky they didn't get their idiot asses sunk.

When you are in open water, black water, dark as can be. It puts the fear of god like nothing else.

you can see a storm that big coming for a while Checking the radar on your phone would have shown you the storm cell and direction Weather radio would have given you a heads up Think PFD before EPIRB cut the fish and kite loose....you chose a fish over your own safety.

My next door neighbor here in Maryland was lost in one of those storms on May 21st 2016. They were fishing off of Cedar Key in the gulf and got hit by a storm. They didn't show up by morning and the Coast Guard went searching. They found the boat capsized and Gil's brother and a friend were still hanging on to the boat. my neighbor got separated from the boat and was lost. He was wearing a life vest. Gilbert Valdes- RIP

Why were you not monitoring NOAA on the VHF and heeding the Notice to Mariners? And why didn't everyone don life preservers? Been there also but only because we waited too long after the first warnings. Keep the VHF on at all times. And play it safe.

Where the hell is your three's life jackets, they only work if you have them on. Amateurs and bring goggles with next time and keep them in the boat and you won't be blinded by the rain and spray.

Can we all just admit pretty much anywhere in the USA you will find a couple who will say "The weather is insane here it changed in the blink of an eye'

EPIRBs are a must- Life jackets are a must be worn all times, especially during bad weather. Towing a small dingy behind boat is a great easy safety net or inflatable life raft. Need to carry fresh drinkable water. Need enough water to last 24,48 hours or more out at sea. Believe there are waterproof radios available if in water. Ability to be tethered to your boat. Safety life cable. Cruising that fast in choppy waves can easily bounce a person over board. Safest place to be is on or near the boat. It’s much faster to be able to spot a large boat stranded in the water than a tiny head bobbing on top of water from a helicopter perspective. Paint the bottom hull of your boat bright orange or red- making it easier to see via plane above you if capsized etc Maybe having a bigger boat where one can weather a storm like a 40’ sailboat or inside cabin helps. Blue Water rated boats are something to think about.

I'm glad you survived. But I also spent my life kayaking the great lakes and know a thing or two about fast changing weather on large open bodies of water. Getting caught in a storm is almost always preventable. You can't neglect being vigilant about weather and knowing how to read the clouds. Yeah MI and FL are different climates, but trust me when I say that the last place you ever want to be in MI is in a great lake in a kayak during a storm. A few people die here every single year that way from getting caught off guard.

Hmmm, if your buddy is as experienced as you say, he should have mentioned to wrap everything up its time to go. Clouds like that are not hard to miss especially when they're rolling towards you. Here in Florida you can feel the change in the air before a storm the air gets cooler the wind picks up. Least you're both safe and hope you are able to read the Florida weather. Definitely an experience.

First thing you need to do is take a National Weather Service spotter course. I could see that was a super cell from the beginning. Then take a weather radio with you. You would have had more warning and not been caught like this.

I've been in a few storms down in FL. By far the worst story was when my dad and I were diving off of Duck Key. We did our first dive no issues; the captain moved us to the second location. During the brief, he told everyone there was a storm way off in the distance but didn't think it would be an issue... Well, my dad and I were down I guess about 30ft all of a sudden we started seeing flashes like someone was taking pictures.... yeah no one was around us. Being younger I was able to surface a little quicker than my dad. I pop my head up to getting pelted with heavy rain and lighting and the waves were getting bigger. What really made me panic was the distance we were from the boat id approximate 100-150yd's. Since my dad was still down at the bottom I dove back down and tried to get his attention and relay the situation to him....at the time he didn't quite get it so I started swimming as fast as I could he thought I was just being crazy. Finally reached the boat taking off my fins and climbing the ladder and walking across the deck with the swells rocking the boat was insane. Oh, and I was about 12 or 13 at the time this all happened. Now when I'm down there during the summer and im the captain I watch the radar constantly while the weather is always unpredictable I use an app called Radar Scope its the most accurate weather radar app I've found. I Pay for the subscription that gives me lighting data and storm track. I highly recommended it might save your life.

Great video! The first thing I would have done in that situation which I already have done 2wice before is put on my life jacket. Once your in the water it will be almost impossible to put on your life vest.

Yeah that storm is called a supercell storm and comes with hail,loads of rain, intense wind, and supercell storms do pick up fast and there rare. Nice catch👍🏻👍🏻

That's the trick of the sea my friend, the best fishing happens right before the worst of storms. It'll tempt you to stay & fish while death waves roll in.

We in the Pacific have TWO engines. One for regular use and one powerful GTFO engine. My gtandpa built his own sail boat and he taught me so many things. even his sail boat had a this powerful primary engine and an uber GTFO engine. I remember just coming out of the Straights of Juanda Fuca (regular ocean changes) was difficult. I cant even imagine you two in the pickle you were in. I am overjoyed you all were ok. The power of water is no joke. same goes for inland waters too. Be safe and get your GTFO ENGINE TODAY

Thanks for sharing. I'm from Stuart FL and have been caught in some rough weather on nearly the same boat (23' Contender). I consider myself overly cautious by carrying a handheld/water proof GPS UHF, I carry a EPRIB on my persons, and I wear an auto inflating life jacket. I watch the radar and other means of weather info. I leave a float plan, and my wife also tracks me, as long an cellular reception will allow. My 6 year old often insists on accompanying me but he wears a life jacket at ALL times with D-rings so I can tether him to me if the weather even thinks of getting sketchy. Despite all this, your video made rethink my strategy and will result in adding additional redundant measures. You have obviously face some criticism as a result of posting this video and probably knew that going into it- so I appreciate you doing so as it will help others so long as they are in tune to it. FYI, I remember the day Austin and Perry tragically went to sea. I was headed back home from the Boca area at the EXACT time that weather came out of the west and crossed over I95. It was so bad I had to pull over. I couldn't see passed the hood of my truck; even with traffic idling on the highway. I couldn't imagine having been off shore....

I remember them boys. I was living in west palm and went to a candle light. Just staring at the ocean and even if they survived just imagining floating and dying. Broke my heart.

This happened to me yesterday when we were tubing, we were in a bay so it wasn't quite as serious as your story but the lighting in all directions with black clouds overhead is downright terrifying!

The ocean can be unrelenting and scary in the blink of an eye, glad you guys are cool. I always walk people through safety procedures before leaving and now also carry clear safety glasses on my boat for the rain that belts you in the eyes whilst running back in. Some of those safety procedures are no smoking.. lol.. some unhappy campers on my boat.

One thing I could add as I have been in storms lime that, is first thing you do is to get your life vest on. I see the skipper with no life vest on. Also make sure you radio in and let the coast guard know you are in your way back and ETA. To just drive blindly and hope for the best is not always the best thing. Stay calm and assess the situation over and over as it might change. But the key is to stay calm.

I was out a couple weeks ago and that happened to me, if it wasn't for the compass and my electronics it would have been a mess. It was like being in a washing machine. NO MATTER WHAT ALWAYS STAY WITH THE BOAT!!!!

Weather alert on your radio!! Always keep an eye to the sky . Dont ever go out in the summer until you have knowledge of the weather patterns for that day.. Especially in Florida when its been smokin hot all day.. That's a lot of energy that's been produced and it has to release sometime..

Buy a PLB personal locater beacon. Costs 250 or so. When activated it will give search n rescue personal your lat.long. position Keep your life jackets on with the locater in the pocket.. a decent handheld radio w built in GPS is a good thing as well. Has a 4 to 6 mile range where I live in the great lakes region. I'm qualified boat crew in the USCG Aux and we are issued a plb locater, flashing stobe light .knife.whistle ,and signal mirror in our vest which we are required to wear when underway. Some advance planning on your gear is always a good idea when near shore or off shore.

Had a similar experience in a 40 footer where glass calm turned to 50mph and we were 90 miles offshore wave built to 9 feet and the first time I have ever seen a rod fall out of the holder we were so close to pulling the epirb and I'll tell ya a 40 footer is not as great in waves over your head coming from the side Stay safe guys

So there is one piece of advice I will add. On my boat every life vest we have equipped an epirb. They make a small personal epirb that is extremely affordable. I carry mine with me even on friends boats. We also have another in a ditch bag. People think I'm crazy for carrying up to 8 epirbs on my boat but at the end of the day nothing matters if mother ocean claims you.stay safe on the water love y'alls videos

It's hard to out run those storms, it's like one you see them it's too late.

This reminds me of the time my dad and I were tarpon fishing off the coast of St Augustine. My dad was hooked up with a freight train of a fish, and it took him about 20 minutes or so to fight it. In those 20 minutes, the sky went from a bit cloudy to black. This storm rolled up on us with fury. Right as my dad tipped the leader, we cut loose and bugged out, but it was too late. The rain was torrential and the lightning was constant; it was within a mile in all directions. Mind you we were 200 yards offshore, but we were in a 21-foot bay boat in 6-8 foot seas and 20-30 knot winds. I just held on and rode it out for the few minutes it took to get back into the inlet. The estuary was a raging mess, though. Where the river meets the ocean, the currents are insane, especially in St Augustine, and that means you can have waves of any height in any direction. It's chaos! After a few close calls, we made it through and of course just as we pulled up to the ramp, the weather started to break. That's Florida for you.

I remember going deep see fishing and same thing. It was the scene from the opening of Gilligan's Island. The water came down like a blanket.The waves were 12 feet and it hit the party boat hard. That same day another big party fishing boat capsized off of St. Augustine a few miles away from us. It is no joke.

Been there, done that. Electric storms all around, lines buzzing, electricity shocking us, dropping my rod and reel into the ocean when I got shocked. We were blessed to survive!
