Welcome back to another episode of Project Profit! This is the series where Rachael finds free or low cost second hand items with the goal of trying to flip them for some cash. All profits made from the series are donated to various charitable causes!
We’ve made a couple different lampshades and light DIYs in the past, and have been seeing yarn wrapped lampshades on Pinterest that sell for a lot of money, so it's time to give it a Project Profit try! Second, Rachael found some beautiful vintage clay tiles and has some coffee table diy ideas up her sleeve!

Just as a note- sometimes yarn from secondhand places could have moths (even if the yarn doesn’t seem to have them) so you should put the yarn in a freezer overnight to kill any

Smart tip!!
@norahd4634
@norahd4634 5 месяцев назад
Something I've done before is I put the yarn in the oven at 200°F for about 30 minutes, but take off the paper sleeve first. Also just a note - moths are more inclined to lay eggs in animal fibers like wool or alpaca (not as likely to choose acrylic) since the larvae will eat the yarn when they hatch. I still heat acrylic since it may have been kept with animal fibers and better safe than sorry!

Same goes for bed bugs. But for these leave the stuff for a week in the freezer
@pinemartin6604
@pinemartin6604 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately if you don't have a chest freezer it can't really get cold enough for this to work, and either way it's at least 1 to 2 weeks. It needs to be - 20-25c for 1 week+ or - 18c for 2 weeks. In that time you can't be opening the freezer regularly. It's not workable for me so I use heat and/or vinegar. Wash yarn and textiles at 60c+ or steam it with an iron/clothes steamer, or soak in boiling water and cover. If I'm just steaming I use vinegar as well in case I don't get an area up to temperature. Store unused yarn in something airtight to prevent more moths.

As an Etsy seller, I really appreciate what you’ve said in this video - when someone says to me ‘I could make it cheaper’, I just smile and say that I wish them luck and hope they have fun, I am committed to not devaluing my work or the work of others. Just because I can’t afford it, doesn’t mean it’s too expensive, it just means it’s out of my budget. I have a lot of yarn in my house so I’m now very tempted to try that lampshade!! It looks awesome.

Some ppl just have that mind set that they can make it themselves for cheaper I don't think it's ment to be an insult to the artist in anyway they're just crafty and like to make things...then again if they're saying it to you on etsy because they feel upset about the price then yeah that is insulting

Yes absolutely but not the exact same, adjust the size, design, ..a bit ( smaller, higher, more curved,...) And yes you could have asked 60, 70$ more & it would have sold just as fast. The ceiling chandelier is just bit overpriced by 40, 50$ I know these prices bc on a weekly basis I'm a lot on the internet scrolling & looking at similar items (on Belgian sites & intire Europ sometimes even the States) From particulier to professional sellers That's the only reason I say that about the price otherwise I would have shut my mouth 😊 🤘🏻❄️

When she placed the two stripped lamp shades on top of each other, I said out loud to my computer "oh my gosh I love it already!". I think I'm gonna be making a shade like that...as soon as I have a lamp to put it on. Nicely done! :D

I think making another table but putting the clay tiles in the center to make a pedestal base would be kind of sick. Maybe a smaller coffee table or a pair of end tables like that. People really seem to like pedestal furniture right now. I also think them stacked organically on their sides could be cool as sculptural legs for tables or chairs or media consoles. Everything looked great. You smashed these !

I have 6 of those clay weeping tiles in my living room. I am growing bell peppers in them right now. My dad pulled them out of the ground when we renovated my childhood home. I keep them as nostalgia and well they make amazing pots for plants! This table though....What a cool way to use old weeping tile.

Beautiful! Your art hanging tip is right on because the rule of thumb I use and recommend (as a professional interior designer) is 60” to the center of the piece. And if you’re 5’-7” then your eye level is just about at 60!

I'm so jealous because I never would have thought of using those clay pipes that way. And it's not like I can go searching for them in my own hometown because yours was such a find. But now that I've seen it on a table I can't help but think what a classy upgrade to the classic 2x4 and cinder blocks bookcase. If you used those pipes to be the standing legs of bookshelves they would become a display feature.

Use the table shelf and more clay tiles for an other table but do like a white wash on them. It could be in funky colours too, like Klein blue, hot pink, bright yellow... If you put a smaller pipe inside of them you could even stack them for side table height !

Pendant lights seem to be a lot harder to sell in general. My guess is that it's a combination of needing specific space and electrical to be able to install the thing and also just the task of instillation itself or having to call an electrician. This becomes even more true for those of us that live in rental spaces

I would have bought as many of those clay tiles as possible and stashed them wherever I could. I would use the HELL out of those making end tables and coffee tables and little standees for beside a bed or a bathtub or whatnot. I have this idea for these large pink marble tiles I thrifted. My dad and I will be building these ideas next year. The plan is three end tables kinda mismatches set. We shall see what happens. But a general plan is there and we plan to make them look LUX LUX LUX. With his skills and our combined ideas. I have no doubt about it. I’m unable to work any sort of traditional jobs so crafting/creating stuff like this is all I can do to make any income if any at all. Here’s to next year’s ideas!

I absolutely agree with giving the Etsy seller what they ask for. I just bought wallpaper for a PAX wardrobe for a nursery, so as a renter, I can give my baby a mural that can move with us and change as we grow. I got way too much wallpaper for the interior from Wayfare because I originally planned on doing the sides as well and then ordered an extra roll just in case (painterly birch trees) about $250. Ordered a mural wallpaper from an Etsy seller. They even printed it to size! About $400 (a painted forest scene). It's sophisticated looking, so again it's decore that can grow and move with us.

That lamp shade is stunning and at asking price of $250 that’s only $31.25 per hour for your time to make it and that doesn’t include yarb and the shade frame - so I think it’s priced great - it is Christmas time and premise may be hard to part with time time of year!

I fully understand about the coffee mug. My mom gave me a china mug when she was clearing out her mug collection and the rim is so much thinner than the other stonewear and glass mugs I already had. It definitely makes it easier to drink from since the rim is easier to get a good seal on with my lips - way fewer dribbles when im trying to multitask
