Welcome back to another episode of Project Profit! This is the series where Rachael finds free or low cost second hand items with the goal of trying to flip them for some cash. All profits made from the series are donated to various charitable causes!
Rachael has made a couple different lampshades and light DIYs in the past, and has been obsessed with these cocoon style pendant lights on Pinterest that sell for a lot of money. So it's time to give it a Project Profit try!
Second, Rachael found an abandoned chair with a very nice chrome body that just needed a little love and a DIY reupholstery hack!
Will these DIYs have triple P (project profit potential)?!

About the cocoon light: I think you needed to be able to control the shape more than a piece of stretch fabric allowed. I envisioned this as a series of panels, glued or sewn together. Each panel could be made of velum or another kind of strong paper. Or even canvas or burlap. Each panel needed to be shaped separately on the wire form. That would have given you the kind of edges and defined shapes you wanted. As it is-well, I won’t criticize. It seemed only that you were seeking a fast solution to the fairly complex geometry of the light and that turned out not to work.

I think if the structure underneath would be shaped with the "pull over" cover in mind it might work better.

For the pendant light: if you look at the inspo pics you can see that the original frames have way more sections. This is to divide the pressure of the fabric more evenly and also to allow for more definition in shape. Also: if you could break apart an original you’d see horizontal supports between the vertical sections on the inner part of the shade, again to support the pressure of the fabric. So your approach wasn’t wrong, you just needed to add more of everything basically 😉 I love that you showed us the whole process though even if this was an unsuccessful attempt, it’s really the only way to learn new things :)

Agree- more sections would support the fabric tension better. Also while some may be sprayed w a special substance, many lamps like this are available made of fabric. But i think knowing now that the drawstrings are needed if that part of the shade was recessed inside u would get to see more bends. Basically more sea urchin shell shaped and less conch shell shaped lol

Hey Rachel! I think the lamp has a lot of potential, you need to do a follow up! I would suggest doing it in panels like so: 1. Cut panels biggers than needed 2. Superglue the panels on each section, leaving the surplus hanging off 3. When the glue is dry, cut the excess with a razor blade right along the metal wire for a super clean edge! Hope that helps! ❤

Not surprised the cocoon light didn't sell, sorry Rachel, it looks like a laundry bag! I think double layer tissue paper panels would have been better... Not keen on chair either. Think you didn't need to stuff the back of the back of the chair, you would have had more cushion cover to make the front a little longer. Hey! Seamstress here! I think to make the lamp work you’d have to sew six panels together. Think about all the seams on a baseball hat to make something round. Then to stretch it over you’d probably have to leave one of the seams open and hand stitch it after. I think you did a fantastic job!

I actually think the key to making this light is the fact the arm pieces move. I think there’s a way to create “ship in a bottle” style light. Where the fabric is cut specifically to the shape so all the details are seen. Slip in the flat wire and then pop it open. You may have to do a bit of hand sewing at the very end, but it would make it work!

*For the cocoon lamp: they make cocoon bodystockings large enough to accommodate the size of the lamp!* It's the same woven nylon material (you can choose from different colours), only one seam, sometimes none, and you can fit up to 1-2 people inside of one so they're stretchy but not so tight that they'll bend the wires. You find them online... you may have to turn safe search off for this one 😅 Funnily enough I needed one for a caterpillar/butterfly costume and it was absolutely perfect, eerie but so pretty. Good luck!

For the cocoon light, a tip to work out the pattern, put it on the frame inside out, then pin out the excess fabric along all of the wire. Give yourself seam allowance while pinning and then remove from the frame and sew where the pins were. This should then give you the smoother effect you were after. The other way to sew it is to create each wing separately and then attach all together. Fashion designer thinking out the box to create a pattern here lol ps the chair was excellent!

A little suggestion on how to improve the lamp: What gives it the obvious DIY look is the bunching of the fabric, so if you fix that I think it will look amazing just like your inspo My suggestion to fix that: If you want to use the same fabric you are already using: You can remove the draw string and pin the excess fabric while the cover is still on the lampshade, and mark it with a marker and sew the excess off making gores. If you want to start fresh with a new fabric: You can use a common technique that cosplayers use to get patterns: cover a side of your lampshade with tape to get the perfect shape. Then you take a little bit off sideways to account for the stretch of the fabric. You'll wanna make 1 piece for each side, aligning the seams with the wire. For both, you'll wanna align the seams with the wire to hide them and you'll need to close the last parts by hand or add some sort of closure. Another alternative is to sew some fabric strips to the wire and then sew each piece directly to the lamp by hand, like I've seen lampshade artists do. Love to see your work, it was a good try and still has potential to be improved if you so wish to!

I love that you included the trial and error phase of finding a way to make it work. It's often part of the process and things don't always turn out as planned. I might have brought the drawstrings in lower and added material to keep the form on the top and bottom. I probably would have added new foam and cotton batting for the chair simply for better material stability from daily use.

It was a good try but you can still fix the lamp if you so wish to! I think what gives the DIY vibe is the bunching of the fabric, so all you need is to make the cover fit nicer to the lampshade. I've seen many lampshade artists wrap the wires in fabric strips, then place the fabric onto each panel, pin it and sew it by hand to the strips on the wires, then cover the seams with some trim. That gives an extremely smooth result! Another option you can do is pin the excess fabric to mark some gores on the current cover to avoid wasting fabric, but you will need to finish it by hand to be able to fit the wire inside Anyways, thank you for showing your fails too😅

Just some two cents from a product designer in the interior world, most of the inspo lighting you are looking at are rice paper! That is how they get it to be so form fitted. There are a lot of tutorials on how to make rice paper lamps, the cost would be higher but you could also sell it for more. Another alternate is to use a thin linen (or faux linen) fabric and cut smaller panels that are the exact size of each segment of your frame. Similar to how a football is sewn together. You could add plastic sheeting around the frame and then cover it with fabric also. Also just to add stability to your frame, I’d remove the electrical tape and use JB weld or even better a soldering iron that you could use for more metal based projects! Ps the chair looks so good!!

Love the inspo! I know the goal is to upcycle random finds here and there but I was thinking if you literally took a wire bowl/basket or as a last resort one of those hexagon -y lamp shades we have in the home sections of big stores and wrapped the fabric around it, you'd get a more symmetric line in the end. Maybe even swap the rope with a tiny velcro snap stripe in the upper corner to seal it for a cleaner look. It looks promising and deffo an inspiration!

The light needed greater stability for the spokes. I would invest in a soldering iron, which will help you out if you continue to upcycle lampshades. Rather than stretch fabric you could have used washi paper (think shoji screens or the floor lamp at Kelsi's house) or even gluing the fabric to the spokes to refine the form. If you had cut long strips and glued directly to frame that might have worked too. As for the chair, my preference would be more cushioning. It would soften the metal frame, making it more lush. Add in some tufting to the back rest.

The lamp shade really send me down a rabbit whole and made me think about how I would do it. I think I would try to create a really sturdy skeleton, that does not bend, when the fabric is added. then I would use 1 or maybe 2 panels of super stretchy fabric and hand sew it on while stretching it as much as possible. I would not use a separate panel for each section, since that might take away form that stretchy effect.

For the light maybe a sewn "tunnel". The tunnel would need to be a few pieces, but you could put a string through it and on the spots where it's open you could thread the string around your shade structure. This way I could see your shape come to life. Also to keep in mind - this would probably be visible from the outside, especially when the light is shining. Kinda hard to explain but I hope it helps.

Lamp: 1. Cut 3 or 6 panels to ‘match’ shape of skeleton/ spines (Rachel sewed 2 hexagons, I’d suggest 3or6 ‘hexagons’ but with extra ‘corners’ as per shape of spines). 2. Sew 6 channels for the spines (like you would with boning for corsets). 3. Insert 6 individual ‘spines’ into ‘sock’. 4. Attach outer structure to inner structure. 5. Hand sew hem around top and bottom edges.
@lost7433
@lost7433 4 месяца назад
So for the cocoon lampshade: I know one of your major frustrations was losing all that definition on the top. I think your best bet, to remove the drawstring bulkiness and keep those curves, would be to pattern your fabric such that there ate basically darts running along the wire frame. With some fancy patterning, you could make it such that you only have to sew those darts on the top and bottom, so that there's no seam on the outward curves. This method would likely involve some hand pleating and handsewing on the top and bottom after you slide the 'sock' over the frame, but you could also optionally try a sort of elastic waistband on the top and bottom instead!

The pendant should be revisited because it has potential but for now it’s not it. And the chair I believe it would’ve looked better with the flap going backwards… if it makes sense. Lamp shade - lots of great suggestions on how to work with a stretch fabric. But how about approaching it from another direction. What about wrapping a frame in a "Shrinkable" material such as the plastic used to wrap boats or to make old windows air tight in the winter? Shrink to desired shape using a hairdryer or heat gun. Should allow you do have both curves both inward and outward.

Omg I just got an epiphany on how to get that stretched look as I was watching Beckys’ new stairway reno (bc she also uses a similar light). Ok so if you have stretch fabric like a sock over a cylindrical wired shape and THEN squish it, maybe adjust the shape of the wire when the fabric is already stretched over. Ok, have a great day! The chair is actually pretty genius and looks comfy! This is a great use for our beloved ikea pillow shams. With the light, if the fabric stays the same i think the interesting bends in the wire need to be at the wider point where the stretching is happening. Otherwise, using something like a tube of tights like material (but that is appropriately sized) would still work better so it can go from ver small to ver stretched. Maybe a wire that goes around the circumference and stabilizes each arm will help them hold up to the tension created by the fabric. Physics!

You can make a cocoon lamp that is quilt-like stitched together so it’s easier to get the shape that you want and is also visually interesting and not an exact dupe!

If the cocoon lamp cover still has some stretch to it, you can try stitching the cover to the frame, at the points where the wing frames dip inward. If you‘re willing to start fresh with the cover, cloth that is a bit more sheer will probably do a better job of showing off the shape you created with the frame.

Paper feels like it should be the solution for that light, kind of like papier mache but not shredded, more like strips dipped in wet glue and draped over the ribs. Fun project!

If I were making that lamp I think I’d do stretchy fabric panels stitched together with BIG cross stitches. Like really lean into the style of visible mending. Then I’d wrap it and stitch the last panels together kinda like a corset if that makes sense. It would be a different look than your inspo but I’m very into stitches so that’s how I’d do it 😅

On the lampshade- if you added spacersmade of wire (loop around the arm then over to the next arm all the way around) along the top and bottom points of the outer shape you could have added structure without it being too visible through the fabric. If it was me, I would use a cosplay hack and wrap the whole thing the way I want with a plastic bag and then duck tape over that. You then cut the tape off and use it as a sewing pattern to get the final shape you want with fabric. (Dont forget to add a 1/4 inch for seam allowance.) There are lots of tutorials on you tube for this. After doing this I would cut out my pattern from the fabric I want. (You'd probably still want it to be kind of stretchy.) I'd sew the pieces together, pull it over the frame and then whip stitch up the side by hand to close it. For the indents on the top and bottom to read really well from the outside you may need to add a very small tack down stitch from the outer fabric to the wire frame underneath. That's what i might try. Don't know if that helps but it's an idea.

I think you should look into adding a circular wire piece (on the inside) that connects to the middle/widest pieces (that stick out) to try and help keep the shape! I’m sure this could be glued and fastened with wire to each “sticky outy” bit😂🙈 Then maybe you could use the stocking, or something similar that could help mimic the shape you’ve made! (Hope that makes sense🙈)

The concept was so strong I want to see a redemption arc for the cocoon lamp. I agree with other commenters it needed more spokes and maybe support between the spokes to hold them in place. I think the fabric you ended up with was too thick. I understand most lampshades are made by sewing the fabric directly onto the wires but that sort of defeats the concept of the cocoon lamp shade. I don’t see why nylon tights wouldn’t work on a skinnier design, and maybe especially if they were plus sized? I love your takes on interesting light fixtures, I wouldn’t be mad if that were a whole series in and of itself, or maybe a subseries within project profit. Lamps and statement lighting are like the lipstick of the interior design world. Obviously they can be very expensive and classic/formal, but it’s also cheap and easy enough to be really trendy with it and change them up, especially if you diy. And they make such a statement in a space. But yeah not be a hater but this one was a big ol miss for me 😂 gotta respect the risk taking though!

Totally agree about either shrink wrapping or creating individual panels for the light. Not sure the logistics of it, but you could always shrink wrap it with clear plastic and then use a tissue paper to decoupage all over for a diffused light? When I was younger I used to iron shopping bags between wax paper to create thick panels to sew together into tote bags…could something like that work? It would be structured and maybe even easy to glue together. Or you could shrink old grocery bags by heating them, leaving the logos and print for an artistic touch!

Would you consider doing a deeper dive into the flop and figuring out the way it was constructed and how that could be translated to a DIY? Maybe also some more history on the OG lamp style.

The lamp needs more structure, such as twice as many verticle forms. It also needs horizontal structure to keep the ribs evenly spaced. Also, stretchy fabric will bend outward at the fat areas, but it won't bend inward unles you stitch it to the inward bends. You can try again with a different shape, or you can use the base form and wrap wrap wrap again to create another woven shade. That one was a winner!

Coccoon lamp: 1. I would add some cross pieces of wire in between wings to make them more stable (could even just be thread or something, doesnt need to be metal if you do them all around, its gonna « pull » the wings instead of pushing them) 2. Would cut the fabric tighter at the top and bottom ends (avoid gathering effect) and close with a velcro or snap instead of the string Loved the chair :)

The concept of the cocoon light is great, but it's all about the structure of the lamp.. my suggestion is to make some sort of short tube with vertical structure in every side (like a hat box), and also make a tie dye on the top and bottom wrinkle area, for some accent.. after that you could always use some tassels for more pops of accent 😊

Idea 1:Take off the over, turn it inside out put it back on. Open the bottom drawstring fully and pin 6 evenly spaced darts at the bottom of the fabric to get rid of all that lower excess fabric (anything below the widest part of the lamp). Take it off and sew darts. Cut away excess fabric. Put it back on, position all the "wing" pieces perfectly. Mark where they are (use a friction pen if you can). Take off the cover, disconnect the bottom of the "wing" pieces. Sew channels where you marked the fabric. Slip it back on pushing the "wings" through the channels. reattach the wings. The channels will keep the wings spaced where they are supposed to be spaced. Idea 2, add strong wire between the "wings" to hold their spacing and go back to the pantyhose.

You could’ve wire wrapped the shades together so they wouldn’t move. I use a lot of JB Weld to attach metal parts might have helped so the ribs wouldn’t keep collapsing

I think you were on the right track with the cocoon lamp! I think a warmer tone nylons fabric or maybe even a rich green could have looked nice. Also maybe taking some stitches to accentuate where the frame bends would help create a more interesting silhouette! I’d love to see you keep going on this one!

For the lamp shade, I have a couple thoughts. First of all, I think welding (or maybe super-gluing?) the wire pieces to the lamp frame would keep the arms secure and evenly-spaced. Also, I think the first pair of tights was a little too thick and the material from the fabric store was even thicker / less stretchy. A thinner, stretchier nylon fabric would have been closer to your inspo. And this would take a little more sewing / pattern drafting skills, but I think the fabric shape needed to be more of a cylinder, with a shape to go around the sides, and a circle bottom panel to close it permanently (rather than drawstring). For the top, if it is just tight enough to slide over the top metal ring, it should hold snugly on its own. I have sewn things like car seat covers, so I know how much more brain power it takes to materialize a fully 3-D shape instead of a 2-D shape (like the hexagonal pillowcase shape), but it might be fun to try and see what you can do! I feel like it has potential to work!

I think in order to keep the clean lines of the cocoon light you’d need separate panels and add “pouches” where you could run the wire structure inside. Like the boning in a corset. ❤

I think the cocoon light has a redemption story!!! Maybe if you weaved strips of scrap fabric around it. Kind of like basket weaving. Maybe even use varying sizes of strips! You definitely gave it a great go!!
