For those who don’t want to wait for the light bulb to go on, it’s a Tug Bar, for thumb-style!!! As seen on 50’s Fenders…
@UkiMalefu

Thank you! I always imagined it was some kind of support for playing with your thumb, but I was never sure. This is the first time I get some kind of confirmation.

Originally invented to keep busy bass players on the rhythm hahaha. Naw, originally the Jazz Bass had "ashtray" pickup covers which go over the strings. The "tug bar" at the position shown on the HB bass would have been for your fingers to rest on, or for accurate reference of the players thumb over the next string pluck, while the "ashtray" over the neck pickup would have been where your palm would rest. Back when the Jazz Bass was new and slap bass was still in the incubator, the Bridge Cover "Ashtray" was actually stuffed with foam to deaden the sustain and get that radio sound everyone was after before 1962. DIY String Mutes, back when guitar amps were only sold at Appliance Shops.

Also known as a Finger Rest. From back in the Bad Old Days™, when the bassist was expected to use one of those big fat FELT picks and play up by the heel of the neck (resting your pinky on the finger rest).

For those of us who play bass with their thumb instead of their fingers, we immediately knew it was a FINGER rest for players like us. Yes, there are other basses with thumb rests for guys who play bass with their fingers but this is not one of them.

The "rest" is a finger grip for playing with your thumb, as you eventually deduced. It may seem ridiculous now because noone really plays like that. It originates from the very first electric bass design in the 50s. When Fender first introduced the electric bass, nobody was really sure what kind of reception it would get or how it would be played. Bass players up until then all played double basses. The idea was that it would be played in a similar way to how guitar players would play the bass lines when playing finger-style. Designers still include it on their bass guitars as a nod to the original design, even though the majority of players will likely never use it. And as you pointed out, it sort of gets in the way.

This is a finger rest so you can play with your thumb. If you were around in the 50's and 60's you would know what it is...Nice looking bass but it does not sound like a Jazz bass.
@PooNinja
@PooNinja Год назад
2:06 yes my bass had one of those rests too ? If you got time to lean you got time to clean, so I removed it because my fingers are lazy enough as is. I saw the timeline title bad slapping and I soo hoped for a typical Henning pun then the lovely Leslie to come running down from the control corner into the live room and slap the face off HP 😂. Alabama style, from way down south 👏🏽

When I bought my bass I compared a P-type with a J-type, and most significant to me was the nutwidth. The J-type was much narrower on fret 1, and i preferred the P-type.
@anotherrandombassguitarcha9482
These are the best economy style basses on the market that doesn't give you an economy look. I personally could do no better to find another manufacturer who could offer a bass of this caliber at a lower price. The Roswell alnico pickups are a really impressive feature as nearly most other brands of economy jazz-style basses come with that cheap 'magnet bar' ceramic pickup that always sound cheap. And just for comparisson of how much money you could easy spend on basses that are far less in value and they charge over TWICE the price of what you are getting from this Harley Benton, look no further than the embarrassment of a bass: the G&L Placentia jazz bass which commands an MSRP of $499,.....and it's complete crap. Harley Benton is getting it done for the affordable bass market with plenty of respectable stock features.
@JimijaymesProductions
@JimijaymesProductions Год назад
Still trying to figure out if I should get the PJ version of this or a Sire bass for 3x more. I'd probably swap out the pickups for some custom or at least higher end made models still would only be about half the price. Sire's have the active stuff which I may or may not use. Its just a studio bass so needs to sound good and be able to be intonated rather than reliable on the road.
@vansweej
@vansweej Год назад
the first fender basses had this finger rest. It was meant to curl your fingers behind it when you play with your thumb, Leo Fender envisioned the bass first as being played with the thumb. Off course through the years, electric bass playing evolved. Harley Benton did this since this bass was created in a vintage series

In the early days of the Precision, it was an experiment, and everyone was trying to figure out how to use this new instrument. A lot of guitarists bought them so they could pick up bass gigs without having to lug an upright around. In the first few years, there were no “rock” bassists, no Marshall stacks or roundwound strings, and no-one was removing the bridge cover so they could pluck back closer to the bridge…

I have one with an incorrect thumb rest as well, I was thinking it was in the wrong place .makes zero sense unless you play it left-handed, but then the strings are reversed... hell who knows!!..watching you trying to figure out that thumb rest is probably exactly how I looked before just deleting the thing.

Just so you guys know, Paul McCartney plays primarily with his thumb and also uses a pick but never his fingers. Im not sure why some bass players think its a mystery that there are many of us that were inspired to play BY him, also play LIKE him. But even though my main bass is a Hofner 500/1 Beatle bass, no finger or thumb rest is necessary for us to play with strictly our thumbs or use a pick.
@Furtheronmusic
@Furtheronmusic Год назад
Just some guitar history nerdy stuff. In the early days of the jazz bass it was a finger rest for players using their thumb. Ie true vintage reissues will have that but odd on a modern instrument you'd expect it as a thumb rest to allow finger style playing. Given the block inlays not dots doesn't fit with the look possibly.

Yeah, Leo Fender thought that people would want to play a bass guitar with their thumb when he designed the Precision bass. Turns out, he was wrong, but they kept putting a "tugbar" (it should never have been called a "thumbrest") bellow the strings anyway. Now, it's considered part of the "traditional" aesthetic, so every manufacturer of Fender bass copies feels compelled to put one there, despite its limited utility.

Macca was still a schoolboy when the original Telecaster-shaped Precision bass came out in the early 50’s. Also, he didn’t switch over to bass until Stu Sutcliffe left, more than a decade after the 1951 introduction of the original P-bass.

@@Xcorgi i know so little about Paul McCarney I couldn't even tell you if you were pulling my leg, I was pretty sure he was a guitar player, personally, I'm more inspired by people like Leland Sklar, so though both legions in their own right there are miles apart, also, you seem a lot more knowledgeable in this area I'm still just trying to learn to play the dang thing, but ok yes there are some players that play with their thumb only, it's still only a small handful of the entire market, so it's kinda strange they on such a cheap model would spend money on a thing 1 in a million would use
