You missed perhaps the most stupid support of all: in her Silas A support she learns to stop killing people by working out with Silas daily. The actual explanation given is that she just needed an outlet, and somehow nobody ever figured that out the entire time she was in the military.

If Xander did background checks on his retainers, he would never have put Laslow on as his retainer, because there is no background of Laslow in Nohr.

this doesn't make up for it, but I think Xander made Peri his retainer partially because of what was stated in game, and he probably was thinking "I can ensure she causes less harm if I keep an eye on her."

I'd say Corrin is just as cringy as Xander and Leo in his treatment of Peri. Especially on Revelations, he goes from trying to explain the concept of mercy to Selkie to asking Peri to sweep her violent temper under the rug by baking goodies for everyone and saying that he'll just make sure to hire stronger servants when they marry. WHAT.

The problem with having characters change in supports is that suddenly, their battle quotes and the like stop making sense. For example, even if Charlotte marries a prince, she still complains about not being rich during other supports and some of her level ups.

Honestly, I feel like Peri was a huge missed opportunity. I feel like if she was written with more care, she could have been an interesting look into a morally corrupt character, or into a survivor of a very traumatic experience. It's a shame to see hints of something that could've been much better be so overshadowed by.. well, basically everything you went over here. I feel like one minor, but very useful change that could have made much of the game better would have been making her Camilla's retainer instead, possibly swapping Beruka to Xander. I feel it would have made much more sense for Camilla to shine on Peri's skill in combat, and see beauty in her rather flamboyant and doll-like style. I could picture their support starting comedic with their shared trait of killing with little to no care, but grow into Camilla taking an almost motherly role to make up for the mother Peri lost, and teaching her to kill for those important to her, to put her skill in combat for a greater good. It's a small potential step, but I feel like it would have lead to many other changes for the better. Xander having a support with her outside of Peri being his retainer could have lead to a more direct approach over her lack of morals in killing others, and possibly have allowed him to break through to her and lead towards efforts in changing. That's what I would hope for, anyways. And yeah, Leo's support with her honestly needs to be scrapped and rewritten from the ground up. I can't see any salvaging that mess.

It's hilarious to me that the writers couldn't come up with anything that Xander could see as attractive in Peri character-wise, so they gave him generic, empty lines like "I like the kind of woman you are" and "I love everything about you".

I feel like peri is there to accentuate a very hidden detail about the nohrian royal family: every single one of them is, in one way or another, mentally disturbed, which I'm assuming is due to the blood of the dusk dragon flowing in them. its most obvious with camilla, as she is hands down a psychopath on peri's level, only that she uses these psychopathic tendencies not to slaughter innocencent, but those that in some way threaten her, especially younger, siblings, most notably corrin, and very clearly has a mother-complex (though thats probably due to her own mother using her for her advantage rather than the blood of the dragon). leo on the other hand just completely lacks empathy. its very clear from the prologue that leo would have had no problem with killing the defenseless kaze and rinkah and only didn't do so because he knew it would upset his sibling corrin. with elise its not so much any violent tendencies, but the fact that she is completely, and I mean COMPLETELY, detached from reality, even more so than sakura. to her, all is well with the world as long as she can be with her siblings, no matter if any wars are going on or what have you. lastly, we come to xander, who, due to being the crown prince of nohr, has to keep up appearences and hence seems like an upstanding, just royal on the surface, but truth be told he is a person who divides the world in purely black and white, as seen when he immediately calls corrin a traitor and actively tries to kill him/her, and, once he has taken a liking to a person, tends to straight up ignore every negative aspect of that person as seen with camilla or peri.

Peri is finally, properly developed in a conversation in an unreleased DLC when Soleil is her daughter. Us poor Westerners will never get to see her evolve as a character.

I like Peri as a unit, but as a character? Yeah, she's fairly inconsistent and broken.

Okay... I am not at all what I would call a fan of Peri, but I don't think quite enough is being given to what IS good about her. For one thing, I think you totally glossed over certain parts of her backstory, including the most significant person who shapes her character, outside of her mother's killer-- her father. The fact that her dad not only turned a blind eye to her murdering of servants, but also does not even bother to teach her any sense of morals, is a keystone event of her childhood that informs her current character. Peri is an adult stuck with the mindset and behavior of a small child, because she was never challenged, disciplined, or forced to change. She was freely allowed by her father, the only authority figure in her life, to carry on with her reckless and immoral behavior, and-- here's the thing-- was never told that this was WRONG, as we see in her supports with Laslow, Leo, etc. Her development is a tragic snowballing of a lack of discipline and authority figures in her life to TEACH her the morals that she so desperately lacks, furthered, no doubt, by how terrifying the notion of a murderous little girl-- then teen-- then adult must be. By the time Peri meets and interacts with anyone who MIGHT be responsible enough to help her learn how she SHOULD act, she's so far gone, so far stuck in the moral mindset of a vengeful, spoiled little child, that people feel intimidated, like helping her seems not only too difficult, but understandably dangerous. Peri is a victim of a highly neglectful childhood, and the only reason she's remotely funcitonal in a society such as Nohr's is her penchant for murder, which the army seeks to exploit. HOWEVER, she DOES display the capability to learn the morals that she was never taught, as displayed in Laslow's supports with her. In a case such as hers, the right approach is tantamount to progress, and Laslow hits the nail on the head by using her mother to help her understand and learn empathy, a concept that's otherwise totally foreign to her-- but NOT one that she's unreceptive to. Does she resist when people try to teach her morals? Absolutely, and it's clear that she is resistant when it comes to change, since she's gone so long in her life without needing to do so-- she's very much stuck in her ways to some extent, but NOT to the point that she is beyond redemption, and I think that that is what makes her... well, not GOOD, her supports are far too inconsistently written for that, but... better than you're giving her credit for. And one thing she DOES have over Camilla, since that comparison was brought up, is the capacity for change, however she might struggle with it... and I think that makes Peri a character who is, at the very least, passable. Now I do definitely agree that her position as Xander's retainer is a discredit to Xander's character, there's no question of that. Her position in the story as Xander's retainer is undoubtedly the worst thing about her; it makes no sense with either her or Xander's established character and only serves to discredit everyone. (The only way I could buy Peri as Xander's retainer is if maybe Garon saw her fighting and assigned her to Xander personally, and then maybe Xander tried to take it upon himself to help her become a more morally-functional adult, but needless to say that would require a complete retooling of the two's supports. So I definitely don't think she's perfect lol.) However, I don't think that ten minutes of the video needed to be dedicated to that. I understand that you don't LIKE Peri, and I'm not trying to persuade you to do otherwise (like I said, I don't like her that much myself), but I feel like there should be a certain... net, shall we say? Of objectivity that should prevent going on for so long about it, especially when a lot of it was just repeating the same points with slightly different wording. As someone who saw and enjoyed the Camilla video, I feel fairly confident in saying you can do better than this one. It's completely fine to have opinions and dislike characters, but in an analysis such as this, characters deserve to be treated more objectively.

Remake this game, Fix the story, remodel peri's personality.

I ... could see her and Xander’s relationship working more along the lines of Xander is actively trying to change her. Maybe Xander finds out about her, realizes she’s an open danger to everyone around her but being a nobles daughter he can’t just arrest her or the like. So maybe he makes her his retainer as more of a way to keep her on a tight leash and away from innocent civilians while he tries to hammer her into shape. Just a thought though.

can I share that Xander tolerating Peri's personality to have a good spot in his father's eyes? I believe it is also mentioned that, while Xander picked his retainers, Garon had to approve of them

There's no good way to make every possible romantic pairing fit within a single vision of what each character wants in a spouse...but it would be nice if they hadn't just had Xander say every woman has aspects befitting a queen. Especially when they're a cotton-candy-haired female Joker.

I love the conquest cast. I love Charlotte I love Xander I love niles, Beruka, Benny, Elise, Leo etc. however Peri is one of my least favorite characters in the entire franchise however and I've gotten to know every game that isn't Thracia 776 or Gaiden. Peri makes me cringe so hard. I honestly can't stand her.

Personally Peri's got an interesting concept that failed due to the usual Fates writing dumpster. One of the core problems was that Xander was the one who chose Peri as his retainer rather then it being a choice by Garon, if she was placed in her role by Garon, it would have increased the dynamic of people being untrusting of her as they cannot truly understand why Garon chose her to be retainer at all. A second core fix to the character would be a non support based exposition as to her backstory that was only shunted into her Laslow support. This would allow other supports to use her backstory as a means of enticing her character development. Examples could include Leo finding her an interesting chance to study psychology and attempt to treat her problems, Arthur could easily be about trying to show her the meaning of what "justice" is over the twisted version imposed on her by her father's negligence surrounding the death of her mother, and Felicia could know about the trauma but attempt to help challenge it through exposure therapy, knowing full well she was risking her life by doing so. Fates writers failed in that they seemed to want to avoid touching on her mental trauma for the most part, and played her more as the "childish psychopath" angle over reflecting what she truly was: A deeply traumatized individual who's method of thinking was twisted by her tragedy and her father's unwillingness to stop her from going down said path, and possibly even encouraging said behavior as his own means of striking revenge for his fallen wife. Also let her put her hair down and let her children get the pink tips too please, that would look great on most child units except Dorkbert

Have you looked at Corrin's support with Peri? I mean, Male Corrin knows she kills servants and she was gonna murder people for giving her weird looks but instead of trying to understand why she's the way she is or how to help her to become more control of her blood lust, she just solves her own problems by making snacks and Corrin even support her blood lust by just hiring strong servants that wont die easily if she attacked them. Then cue Felicia & Peri support... : s This just makes Corrin look more like a hypocrite when the main point of Conquest is to end the war with as few deaths as possible, then marries someone who pretty much loves murder and soaking in a literal blood bath and could very well murder Felicia, someone who he considers family as well. Even when Peri has Kanna it doesn't seem like she stopped since the flower book mysteriously have blood at the end of the support. x -x

Fates is a sad neutered mess of a fire emblem game that was clearly rushed. Saddens me because this game had so much potential.

Seriously, why couldn't we have had your version of Peri? Having her as a recruitable enemy character makes much more sense, and she even shares an awkwardly-colorful palette as Hans anyhow. Despite the little affection I have for her, Peri could've made for an interesting character that broke a lot of the stereotypes and perceptions elsewhere within the army - especially on a Revelations route.

In regards to Fates' S-support, I feel like you can't really take them as evidence since they seem VERY continuity breaking, forced, contrived, etc. C-A however are legit IMO.

I thought Period was boring. She's a bit of a one trick pony. She just kills things. The only other things about her are being a good cook and having a dead mom.

Peri may actually be less likeable than Iago. That's one hell of an accomplishment.

Not great (especially with S support) but I don't find it out of character for him.

When I first saw Peri and how she acted I literally thought she was Camilla's retainer. I thought basically the same things the video said when I found out she was Xander's retainer.

i just realized something out of the retainers of Norh (aside from Elise because her two retainers did not recently die) the retainers contain an outlaw and an awakening child Leo: has Owain for the child to set him right meanwhile Niles is an outlaw (a thief and a gangster) Camila: has Severa setting her on a better path while also having Beruka (an assassin which is not afraid to kill family or the her retainer if it came from Xander or slime Garon pre his death) and Xander: has Inigo to keep him on the path of morality while having Peri (a murderous female Hans, with almost no grasp of morals at all)

I think they were trying to go with "she's crazy so she gets to be random" for her character.

I still think that peri would be a better retainer for Camilla. And Selena would've been a retainer for Xander. I think that they decided to not have 2 of the awakening trio being retainers for the same person so they got swapped

RU-vid comment I know I’m commenting on a 3+ year old video, but I’m curious to hear what you think: Peri being stupid, is an act. Peri crying and being childish, is an act. Peri is a psychopath. True psychopaths are masters at keeping up appearances, manipulating their victims and knowing how to get what they want. When Peri wants to legit improve herself, she does it. When she doesn’t want to improve herself, she doesn’t. With Laslow, I feel like we get to see a mere glimpse of how intelligent and sensible she really is. He gets her interested into something, she does it. Her “improving herself” with Xander was an act to get him off his back. He wants her to at least try, so she did. Like a parent getting their child to eat broccoli. A parent can say, “How can you hate broccoli when you never even tried it? Just try one bite”. The kid has already made up his mind about broccoli, but will try it anyway. Surprise, surprise, their child doesn’t like it. Now, if you put cheese on the broccoli, oh boy! NOW they’re interested. They want to eat broccoli. Laslow had a effective approach, but not with Xander. Peri wanted to improve herself with Laslow, but not with Xander. Peri improved herself with Laslow because she wanted to, but not with Xander. Peri is a psychopath. Although psychopaths are a incredible minority in the entire human population (they’re quite rare), they do exist. And according to the game, Peri is one of them. Watch Paul Bernardo’s interview with two detectives on RU-vid. With the sound off. It looks like a boss having a talk-down with two of his executives. In actuality, it’s one psychopathic killer, dodging, decoying and deceiving the detective’s questions. He’s ridiculously brilliant, intelligent and calculating...which makes him dangerous. Peri, is dangerous too.

You know ghast, I agree with everything you said, and I've actually rewritten Peri's character based on Post Conquest/Revelation. it's really hard, but it's doable if you love the character.

Almost the majority S support feels horribly forced, so I guess it's hard to judge by those. Not just in Peri's case, but also for example Azama and Sakura or Niles and Azura. Correct me if I'm wrong because I do not remember the source of this, but wasn't it said that Xander's former retainers died? So he recruited Peri because she's hard to cut down, given that she fought pretty decent without any preperation in the said tournament (?). But still, she's a horrible character and is in the game for the people who like to put their dick in crazy. The only nice Peri moments are when she shows that (also boringly written) softer side of hers, mostly related to cooking.

I think it would work better if she had trust issues and was convinced that everyone was out to get her. And had a paranoid side and a like ... blissed out side.This mostly because I could keep her death quote, and have her murderous/criminal nature be more explicitly covered.... I'd also have her hair color be explicitly be from something like woad.

I did love Peri's design. It helped her stand out, and made me excited to meet her. Then I did and the absolute absence of character depth made me frustrated at all the time I had wasted.

But I think that Xander making Peri his retainer is a good thing. Xender is against senseless murder, yes. Which is why it works. Xander wishes to look out for his people and is against killing. By making Peri his retainer he has the ability to keep a closer eye on her, preventing her from killing random allies while directing that murderous intent on the battlefield. It also allows him to try and help "fix" someone who is broken instead of instantly going to kill them.

I do like Peri, I think is the character that fits the stereotype of "Nohr bad, Hoshido good" reminding the player the ruthless country Nohr can be. While I agree that she is a sociopath and a murderer, the game shows in her supports how everybody else us trying to understand her, and see past her obvious flaws. And I believe that Xander chose her because he sees her potential, he believes in her redemption, because she is loyal and cares for her comrades (and also because in their support, he is in love). Therefore I think she actually fits quite well with the game's theme: nothing is black or white, appearances can be deceiving, see beyond your own bias

Easy solution: Send her off to die for Noir. Play Classic mode guys. She's a pawn, not waifu.

Either: A) Nohr has values that are totally alien to those of most developed societies, B) Peri lies about understanding morals and ethics, C) Xander has split personality disorder, or they didn't know what they were doing writing these characters and didn't have time to go back and rewrite characters. Anyway, Peri reminds me of those edgy OCs from people who brag about how insane they are and mock mental health as a whole without understanding how cringy and disrespectful they're being.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually think Peri should have been written like the character "Shinn Asuka" from Gundam Seed Destiny... at least before the last 4th of that particular series. Like, if Peri's personality stemmed from her being encouraged by terrible people to do terrible things, then yeah, I'd get it. That fact that Xander actually recruited her is baffling.

Let's be real here: The reason she got to be his retainer is a bit weird, tho not having any formal experience and placing fourth in a tournament is still an accomplishment that Xander saw. Also, I agree that how he finds importance in strength and INTEGRITY when he has a flirt and a serial murderer as retainers. Also it's not Peri that ruins the continuity, that's the writers fault. Don't let bias take over the fact that the writers for the supports weren't that good whether it be the Japanese ones or COUGH LOCALIZATION COUGH. If you need an example, see the Beruka and Saizo C support in the Japanese game and localization. Peri had been traumatized and no where is it said that she had a tutor/ teacher. Now it can be implied that as a royal she should of had one but that wouldn't explain at all why her language skills are impaired and I feel that should be touched on. Peri is a killer due to her trauma and she kills people and thinks it's normal because when the butler killed her mother, she never knew what happened to him. Her supports are focused on slow growth, not full growth. In her single ending, she becomes leader of the Nohrian army and matures. Still I liked the video, just watch the bias.

That's what makes peri, peri. If you look at any person who has gone through a traumatizing experience when a child. They way they perceive things is completely different from what modern society claims "normal" Peri may have suffered from a deep mental depression which could have put a halt to her growing up and learning regular speech, cooking skills etc. The same as when someone you care about dies irl. You may question life, your purpose, how they died, etc. Now given peri's scenario the death of her mother by the hands of one of her own obsessed servants Had an effect on peri. She may have grown up asking if it was her mother's fault for dying and not just the servant for killing her. Since the servant used the excuse of being obsessed with her mother. Peri could possibly also be autistic in some way. Autistic kids/people sometimes lack greatly in normal human behavior and or may act Childish for their age in some scenarios. But excell in other areas. Some can draw fantastically, some have intense memory. Using those as conduits for peri's demeanor maybe she excels at fighting? Albeit she came in 3rd or 4th place. This can be brought back to her potentionally having autism. In some way. Shes naturally skilled at killing. But she lacks the proper training. Someone with experience in battle may very well be able to take out a natural killer. It's not impossible. Now in regards to Xander & peri's supports. It could just be that maybe Xander sees the possibility of growth in peri. Also as one would say it's better to have crazy on your side than have crazy against you. This could be the thought reasoning for Xander making peri his retainer. "She's a natural killer. And with some refinement she could be become an excellent warrior & potential queen" could be what Xander thought. This would make more sense. Because Xanders character is one that looks at the current situation and weighs it against the future as well. This is how I viewed their supports and peri herself. But nonetheless good video dude albeit highly biased.

The Xander/Peri S-support is just another one of the forced marriage alternatives for the sake of the unnecessary 2nd gen. It makes absolutely no sense from Xander's POV, and I do agree that it doesn't make any sense that she is his retainer in the first place either; just like most of Fates it's just not thought through at all. I understand what the writers were trying to accomplish with Peri, but like you keep repeating throughout the video, she just ends up being reduced to a couple of character traits without depth. Is it possible that the people who wrote her supports with Niles, Lasow, and maybe Odin, are different from the ones who wrote the rest? Because that would explain the irregularity; some knew that what was needed for a character like Peri was development, while others just chose to play on her already established tropes. I personally don't think you did a poor job with this video. I understand why people who like Peri *would* think so though (not gonna lie, if someone bashed on my favourite characters I'd be salty as well). But just like with Camilla I think it is okay to like Peri for the budget psychopath that she is, as long as you're able to accept the fact that her inclusion in the game really doesn't make much sense. And the people who try to defend her by saying that ALL of her behaviour was due to one traumatic experience as a child, guys, it's called bad writing. Like Ghast stated this becomes obvious with how she actually gets good character development in some supports, but absolutely none in others. Peri had the *potential* of being a well-written, interesting character, but at the moment she isn't. It is still perfectly fine to like her for who she is, however.

I think Xander only made Peri a retainer because he understands that shes a threat to society and wants to keep her on a short leash. Their marriage support is definitely him just lying and putting moral responsibility before his image to keep her in line and put her into a position where she either reforms or gets assassinated/executed.

Peri's voice always reminded me of Tommy Pickles, from Rugrats. I guess it's pretty fitting though, since she's a baby...

Controversial opinion: The devs put some unlikable jackwipes in the cast so you have some meatshields you won't feel bad for if they die.

You can't just ignore Corrin's Support Conversations with Peri. In the beginning, she is upset because everyone thinks she's a creepy weirdo and actively avoid her. Corrin, while also initially creeped out by her as well, nevertheless helps her cope with what she's going through and make her feel better. She gives Corrin a baked good as compensation and he enjoys it so much that he tells everyone how good of a cook Peri is. Then when people start to understand her and not be scared of her as much, she feels truly happy and that she belongs there. Probably for the first time ever, murder isn't the first thing on her mind. Corrin then straight up says why Xander picked her to be a retainer. In spite of her childish and violent tendencies, Peri has the capacity for and often does show kindness and love for her friends and the people she cares about. Peri is the opposite of Tharja in my opinion. Tharja is a bad person with the capacity to do very good things. Peri is a good person with a penchant to do very bad things. Neither is a sociopath, but Peri is in turn a much more believable character.

I understand what you're saying Ghast, I fell like they tried to make Peri similar to Henry but got stuck with the way her character was meant to develop, so they put her the way she is which puts her down as a character and as I have said when you and Mangs talked about Xander recruiting Peri in Revelations, being that he found her extremely pretty. You cannot take most S supports seriously as they do not always make sense. There could be a deeper value to Peri or why Xander recruited her but it is possible that it was left out of the game itself because it feels like there was to be something deeper with her character and backstory at least I felt that. However I can understand that she can come off as a bad character because of how she has been presented and the conflicting way that is shown with her supports to the point where she lowers how other characters are viewed because of how they interact with her. That's my opinion of Peri even though I do like her, I can understand what people hate about her and I feel like there was meant to be more to her but it got scrapped for is a rather shallow character.

It’s kinda fitting that the biggest problem with peri is how she destroys other characters. In other words, she has a problem with character assassination

I like to think of her position in the army as being used because she's a great psychopatic murder tool, but having everyone work around her because she's unstable. They are afraid of her, yet are risking using her because she's super effective.
