14k gold advice from a professional goldsmith. We coat anything we’re going to stick the torch on with a boric acid & denatured alcohol solution. Dip it in the solution, burn off the alcohol, & the boric acid coats the piece. That keeps the damned oxygen away from the damned copper in the 14k gold. That’ll save you from getting a fire scale in the first place. In case it ever comes up, silver behaves similarly. Fine silver anneals very easily and becomes extremely malleable whereas sterling silver with all that damned copper in it doesn’t get nearly as soft and work hardens very quickly. For best annealing results with either gold or silver use a slightly reducing flame to help mitigate copper/oxygen interaction.

@mementomori4972
@mementomori4972 3 месяца назад
@@Aaron_Ada To be honest, that's not what I would consider to be fluting either. With fluted handles, the space inbetween the wire is usually scalloped and the wire is Inlaied on the high edge of the grove. What he made is a reeded handle, not a flutet handle. That said, Rodrigo Sfreggos handle was not fluted either, and even though Rodrigos dagger was all around obviously a lot more complex, which I believe the judges took into account, If they allow it in one case, they should allow it for everyone else or delete the requirement from the rule book. Let's be a bit more realistic here. Will wouldn't have passed in any case. Another requirement is that the wire must be firmly attached to the handle, which it wasn't. The judges don't wan't to trash a blade and won't point out every single thing that is wrong with it. A master piece is not something you rush on a road trip.

ABS isn't the same group it used to be. The chairman and vice chair aren't even good smiths, and there's a lot of pay-2-play with them. Kind of an open secret in the smithing world at this point. If you're not Kevin's personal pocketbook or a friend of someone on the board, Master Smith isn't just a lofty goal, it's an impossible one. ABS used to be a marketing tool for any bladesmiths. Now it's a marketing tool for very specific bladesmiths, paid for by the hopeful masses. The chairman, Kevin, he didn't even test for Master. He just had it awarded basically on the anniversary of becoming a Journeyman. He doesn't even make blades anymore, his business is, again, fleecing up-and-comers. Charging a grand for a "two week" workshop, come to find out, it's a total of 4 hours (two days a week, 1 hour a day), and he has a habit of missing it entirely anyway. Hell, his user page has two blades made by SOMEONE ELSE.

A guy that came so far and has everything right there on the table in front of them, the least they could do is take a look and offer comments/criticisms. Obviously you put yourself in too much of a time crunch. Love your work, good luck next time.

Regarding the lack of comments on the set - it's seven (I believe) judges, they all have to look at five knives from every single candidate, and really, really, REALLY get into the details. It's a long process, and it may have just not been practical to do those hours of work for a candidate that has been disqualified. I've helped a friend who also went for their masters by doing a very rough look over his blades (well before final finish, I'm not that good) to get an idea of any mistakes before going too far. Even that took half an hour per blade, and I was looking for stuff that was pretty "big" in comparison to what the final examination is chasing. Not defending either side here (I think the MS rules are overly strict and limiting in terms of design and cater to the old school Seppo aesthetic and designs more than modern and even international styling), just adding clarification.

Funny part is, the juges don't even know what fluting is. Rodrigo Sfreddo's dagger doesn't feature fluting either, the handle has reeding, which is the exact opposite of fluting (if you carved fluting in a foam bloc with a hot wire in one cut, you'd get two halves of your foam sheet, one with fluting and the other with reeding, reeding is the motif that fills the gaps of fluting).
@morlath4767
@morlath4767 2 месяца назад
I winced when he was talking about finishing the handle on the drive down, but I understand why they didn't look at the other knives. Regardless of whether the fluting was a legit DQ reason, if the judges thought it was, then why would they look at everything else? I imagine some people have passed their exams even after a technical DQ because of the sheer quality of everything else, but that would be a one in a million shot. From a purely time/judging perspective, unless everything else about the knife screamed master quality, I don't see why they should look at everything else when the knife doesn't qualify. In creative writing terms, it would be like being told to write a poem in one meter system but you did it in another. It sucks for Will (and other applicants), but it's a logical decision.

Gonna be honest, thats complete bullshit. There either need to be DEFINED standards, or some sort of appeals process, because judging based off of whimsical-feelings-based definitions has no place in this, especially when it was an immediate disqualification that stopped them from even giving you feedback on the project as a whole. Honestly just lazy and stuffy behavior. The fact that the FLUTES were based off of a previously qualifying style just adds to how absurd this is. Keep making awesome stuff, and show them you know what you're doing and deserve that qualification.
@Trainwreck1123

What a ridiculous reason to just hard disqualify you, ESPECIALLY because there isn't a well defined rule which means it's just based on "feelings". Sorry to hear that's how it went down, even though you were already expecting not to get your stamp it still hurts I'm sure. You're definitely show real class by not just raging at the decision, not sure I'd be able to do the same!

@@Rosewayforge I am not a blade Smith, but I participate in competitions for other hobbies. For me if I was in a climbing competition for example, and the judges disqualified me for breaking a rule that was something like "climbers must touch the starting holds before beginning the climb"and I only touched it with my hands and not my feet. In my opinion, for something so serious as a disqualification, the rules should be crystal clear and 100% defined with no wiggle room.

Not passing because a board of people have a vague definition and instantly DQ is horseshit and why I consider organizations like this they think themselves "worthy" of determining other peoples skill by bestowing or not bestowing titles to be annoying. I think every single issue you identified in your work matter 100X what those cockwits have to say.

Dang, Will. I'm really sorry. If I could go back in time and give a single piece of advice to a very much younger version of myself, it would be this: "Learn to expect and embrace rejection." If you are not getting rejected about 75% of the time, then you are not reaching high enough. This is true in careers, endeavors, dreams, and even relationships.

A few things. Your work is an inspiration and i love almost all of what you do Will, i love how open you are and how giving and sharing you are with your knowledge experience and energy. it really is a gift. The ABS are incredibly ancient in their thinking and want traditional work above all else. Being someone who does non traditional work (pizza cutter, marshmallow fork etc) is going to put a bad taste in their mouth from the start. I'd suggest having voices like kyle royer's out there is not their favorite thing. Having an MS badge means to the general public you are speaking for the ABS and what you say is now authoratative, if you are already a star, they are basically having to "marry" you to their brand which they probably are quite anxious about.

That’s a tough break. But I’m confident that you’ll learn a great deal from this experience. James chapter 1 teaches us a great way to handle setbacks, be dependent on Him, and how to have hope for the future. Keep working hard, I look forward to seeing where you go. I bought a forge a while back and am looking forward to making some knives of my own. ”Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.“ ‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I'm 95% with you. The "against": time management. Huge failure on your part, you know it, it's not worth discussing. The "with": that's fluted. 100%. It definitely should not have been immediately disqualified. I would have thrown a fit in your place. If they came up with another reason to reject master-ship, so be it. But "not fluted" is nonsense.

….puts flutes in knife handle & inlays twisted golden wire to make gold inlayed flutes… proceeds to get told there’s no flutes in the handle. WTF?! On the surface that judgement was BS and THEN they disqualified you for something not given a specific definition so they can disqualify anyone they want. I would waste my time doing that again unless you’re going to almost exactly copy someone else’s handle that passed.

Sorry, because you are a really good knife maker in my opinion. Don't get frustrated. You are young and sometimes it takes time to mature into what is needed. You will laugh about this minor setback years from now and understand the entire process better. Dismiss any frustration with failing your first try. I failed a lot in my early career, but from that became a master at what I did for a living. I also competed in the state competition for a particular technical field of study in HS and failed miserably due to events beyond my control. Everything worked well in the end, and I was rewarded in the months and years ahead for my efforts and abilities. Nice knives!

Love your work been watching since you first came on with Alec. But it felt like you rushed these. This is for your master smith why not take all the time in the world that you need. And not be rushing it over night to get it completed. I personally am glad you didn’t get it so you can take the time to make it a “master” product. You obviously know way more than me and I don’t mean this in a negative way just watching and listening it seemed like you rushed it.

Well I was there Will….going for JS. For the judge to come out and say the only reason you failed was because of there opinion of your fluted handle and that your knives were master level….Honestly, it was a BS move. I’m sorry that happened to you. And I know you heard it directly after in TN….It doesn’t diminish you as a maker or the level of skill you have. I realize you wanted to pass and whatever the opinion of those that were judging….your skills are there. The politics are crap in every facet of life right now and the ABS is no different.

Will, you gotta get your headspace right before you start these projects. Often you're preparing to fail and you don't even know it. You didn't deserve to pass, given this isn't your best work. Judging yourself and knowing your ability, you would have failed yourself too. All of your work towards your master bladesmiths on YT has been rushed, and not methodically done.
