The cardigan is more like something I would wear in the kitchen while cooking or doing dishes to stay warm but also keep my hands clear. It has a niche purpose.

I love how you dabble in all kinds of different techniques with these projects, yet seem to manage to work out how they work. I always enjoy your 'talk through' to get an idea of what you're actually doing, the struggles etc., in a cosy-down-and-chat kind of feel.

I definitely think the beanie looks adorable on you. Not egg headed at all. Holy smokes on that 1930s daisy piece! That is going to be incredible to wear. I can't wait to see that. I'm a crocheter now (recent development) but I really loved that you showed your blanket progress in particular. Completely understand the hand difficulty on crochet though. Maybe I'll try knitting 🤔 I assumed it would be worse because of the double needle situation. I'll have to give that a whirl. I'm having fun watching how much work you're doing lately
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude Год назад
I find crochet involves a twist of the wrist which hurts my right hand(the one with the hook) and because you have to grip the work in the left hand my fingers cramp up after a while. When I knit I don't have to hold the needles as firmly so it's less strenuous. Hard to describe and I'm sure most people wouldn't notice a difference but when every bit of energy counts you notice these things 😊
@rebeccaturner8340
@rebeccaturner8340 Год назад
@@RetroClaude I totally understand little differences adding up. I have nerve pains that come with swelling when I have flare ups so sometimes hand work is just out of the question. When I'm feeling too badly I just can't sit at the table and sew a garment. I thought crochet might scratch the creating itch without having to deal with moving equipment around but I have noticed that my left pinkie and ring finger in particular have quite a bit of stiffness and pain if I'm not careful. 🤷‍♀️ yay chronic pain?
@juliabreckner2759
@juliabreckner2759 Год назад
As someone who knits and crochets, I find it really interesting that they can both cause different pain. When I crochet, my hands will cramp up and my right wrist will start hurting (different crochet hook grips have helped a bit, but not gotten rid of the issue). When I knit, I can knit for much longer period of time but then my arms and hands will go numb because I'm holding them in a stationary, slightly weird, position for a long time. So both cause issues but I pick which project to work on depending on what kind of issues I'm more okay with dealing with that day. Have fun trying out the different crafts!
@rebeccaturner8340
@rebeccaturner8340 Год назад
@@juliabreckner2759 thanks for responding! I find it so interesting how different people deal with the same types of pain while creating things. It's always nice to hear from others with similar experiences (both to commiserate and learn). Hope you have a lovely day!
@irmar
@irmar Год назад
@@RetroClaude I crochet European style (pencil grip) and only the left wrist twists, the right stays still. And most of the work is held still with your right pinky. If this could help you with the pain, why don't you give it a try?

I LOVE this video series Claude! Not just because it's knitting content, but because it's really interesting to see how you're working through your stash. I've had several thoughts over the years of trying to knit only from stash or not buying yarn for a whole year, but my slowness as a knitter and my proclivity for being attracted to yarn like a squirrel is to nuts, makes it hard to stick to my plans haha! Maybe one day I'll finally do it, but until then I'll enjoy watching you work through your stash :)

For the 65 m of super bulky yarn, I would personally make hot water bottle covers. It would make the hot water bottles feel like plush toys, which is something I really like when I'm feeling crummy and want to snuggle a bit of warmth. I think that they'd make great gifts. Or else make a few felted wool dryer balls.

You've inspired me to try to get into knitting again, I'm pretty slow at it still but I banged out a 1940s WAAF pullover (from an original pattern, which was tricky to grasp for a beginner) in about 2 months over the summer. Since the weather turned recently, I've been wearing it non stop and constantly telling people "I made this!" and the sheer amount of joy it's brought me - the process, the result, the wearing, the compliments I get - has made a huge difference in what's been a pretty tough year. So, thank you. I don't think I would have made it without your videos to inspire me.

I love that you mention having both upstairs & downstairs projects. Stairs *are* a big deal when you have disabilities/chronic illnesses/chronic pain. I don't have stairs in my apartment right now but I'll still have a project for my bedroom and one for the living room. I can't always afford to get up and walk across the apartment. It's so nice to hear other people in similar situations who do similar things, especially when it's something that gets judgement from able-bodied/healthy people (I can hear my dad saying that it's """"lazy""""" to not just get up & get something, ugh)

For years I was sadly one of those ignorant people, who thought people were just "lazy". I got a cold hard dose of reality when I smacked my back pretty bad (fell on some ice and tore up a bunch of a ligaments in my lower back + slipped disk) and couldn't go up the stairs without pain, couldn't lie down without pain, couldn't climb a moderate hill without pain etc etc. Chronic pain is real and it's horrible. I've learned my lesson and I'd like to say I've become a bigger person and would never now acuse anyone of being lazy. You're not lazy, you have a health condition. And I'm sorry for being an ignorant pig for all those years

8:50 Hello, my experience with old sock knitting patterns (I was taught to knit from various vintagey 50s-90s patterns from my grandmother). Most of them do not have reinforcement at all. The expectation is that they'll be darned. My grandmother would typically darn the entire toe area as standard as soon as she was done knitting them. Matching colour generally for adults and for children she'd do a random colour depending on their preference or depending on what she had. Darning wasn't really just a repair thing, it was also used for reinforcement. (Stitch in time saves 9) In my experience, it was very very rare for patterns to come with reinforcement built in. You'd generally add your own via darning.

A thought, were the first pair of socks intended for a female or girl and the second pair for a male. Who knows, make do and mend people back in the day may have assumed that smaller foot women and children would like the stripy pair and men the plainer pair. I don’t know but people didn’t always think about things, at times, in quite the way we do today. Anyway I don’t knit but I love videos as I enjoy your enthusiasm and style. Thank you for this one.

Your blue and white crochet ripple afghan is looking really nice and will make a beautiful afghan, runner, or shawl. Another option to use up yarn remnants in a crochet project that can easily be done in short bursts is to make granny squares. These are often about 3 or 4 inches square and each square can be one color or more than one, depending on how much yarn you have. Years ago my sister used up remnants of yarn this way. It tood years to have enough granny squares, but when she did, she used one color to crochet all the squares together. It made a lovely multicolored afghan. Your hat is adorable. The mohair wrap over a long-sleeve t-shirt will probably provide you with needed warmth when it gets colder. I wonder whether the second Make-Do-and-Mend sock, being one-size fits all, was the size it came out to be because it was meant to be worn by anyone in the family, man or woman. Just wondering....

This has probably been said already (and you are a very established knitter, far more than I am!) but in regards to the socks: colourwork can tighten your gauge, so maybe your gauge is different in the scrappy socks? Tension may change as you keep changing colours too? The baggy pair was only given as a 72 stitch count which is (these days) for a longer / wider foot so maybe that's why they are so long and loose? It is really interesting that it's only 72 stitch count, as usually (these days) that's a large (often male) size. XX

Great video. Loving the project updates. The hat looks really cute. And would probably be a happy wardrobe addition on cold days.

The daisy maker was my first fibre craft when I was little. I must have had the 70’s version because it had an orange plastic handle. Oh and I have to comment that hats like they are called toques! And it’s really cute on you.

adorable knits! I wonder if since the ghost whisper is too warm for summer, if you might unpick it to lengthen the sleeves of the bomber and take advantage of the warm mohair? then you could also do the i-cord and the embroidery, if you like!

Oooh maybe! I might end up with an odd quantity of yarn left I suppose, plus I do quite like the ghost whisperer... Decisions, decisions...
