I flew Walksnail in my DJI goggles...and it wasn't terrible! WTFos Moonlight Shim for DJI v2

Today I became the first FPV pilot to fly the Walksnail HD digital video system with a pair of DJI goggles! It wasn't even that hard really thanks to the new DJI Moonlight Shim support added to the WTFos project by their wonderful development team. But is this something you should do too? Almost certainly not, but you absolutely should consider adding this functionality to your rooted v2 goggles if you have a pair. Let me tell you why and show you how!

My V2's just showed up today, did all the things to get it rooted and updated for O3. Then this video pops up on my feed and now I'm able to play Velocidrone with the goggles!!! I'm stoked you posted this. I was under the impression you needed AV in to get video in on the goggles. Definitely a game changer for training purposes! Thank you!

I wonder if a Raspberry Pi or a similar small computer can be used for converting Walksnail or HDZero VRX HDMI output to USB 3 for DJI goggles? It would be a killer feature, as DJI is never going to release a 1s lightweight digital VTX.

oh man, cats love to just disappear for a while and it always makes me have to go looking for them for days on end. My oldest girl went missing for almost a full week one time and I spent hours looking for her over that week....she showed back up with a dislocated hip :(

@BaconNinja hey I used to think the same thing about Geforce Experience being the way to go but I think sunshine may actually be more efficient. It is still an extra step if you already have geforce experience set up tho. It also uses NVENC if you have nvidia too. But in the end, I read that NVIDIA plans to end Gamestream anyways so we will all be using Sunshine or old drivers (blah).

oh man, if its the Intel UHD graphics then mayyyyybe sunshine can do it but it will probably be pretty rough if it works at all. I wish I had an AMD rig so I could have shown that part too, but NVIDIA just has such good codecs for all the 4k I export. Always awesome to see you here in the comments buddy :)

Can you please help the lens on my camera keeps getting out of focus and I don't know how to keep it still.

What kind of camera are you running? Usually there is a small lock ring at he base of the camera lens where it meets the camera body. If you are having it wiggle out of adjustment, the best way to fix it is to back the lens out by about half a turn, then screw the lock ring down by a quarter turn or so but not all the way tight. Then you screw them both down at the same time for the remaining quarter turn to get them pretty tight in there. If that still doesn't do the trick, I would recommend a little E6000 or Shoe Goo from the threads on the camera lens, over the lock ring, and onto the body. Not a giant glob of it, but a strip of it for sure. Sometimes people glue them more permanently, but you never know when you may want to change the lens after a crash and the E6000 or Shoe Goo will peel back off clean with a little effort.

it should 1000% be possible since the HDZ goggles run Linux and there are already several Moonlight implementations for those shells. It would probably take even less work than it did for the DJI implementation of it!

Very well made Video. But how about a HDMI to AV Adapter? Can you please try it. You could also use that on old goggles!

That is exactly how I got HDZero into these goggles a while back, so it will absolutely work with anything that has an HDMI output :) I just don't really recommend doing it because using that AV adapter basically downsamples any video feed to far lower quality than you would get with just using a BDI digiview adapter and running analog on the quads. It was a fun little experiment though!

I sure could, but it was only because my computer was taking that walksnail VRX output and displaying it for me in a way that I could then get into the V2 goggles. For sure couldn't do it just by making the Walksnail VTX and V2 goggles bind together since those systems arent directly compatible.

I have successfully connected the DJI Goggles to the Steam Deck. Just wanted to let you know, It is possible. If I can find time I want to try to make a "Box" that houses an Air Unit (without camera) and I would stream the Moonlight data to it and have it send to goggles. That way we can be "untethered". Edit: If you want I can send you my compiled moonlight binary and instructions. Currently only working in desktop mode. Black screen with curser in Game Mode - I'm sure it can be figured out.

I was going to say, I think it does work in the v1 goggles. There wasn't anything specific about supported models other than the v2, so I am glad to hear it is running on them!

unfortunately no it does not :( it requires goggles that support the WTFos root hack and their firmware packages. That means you can only do this one on the v1 and v2 goggles at the moment. Maybe some day we will see WTFos crack those goggles 2 though!

Some others have tried it and let me know that it does work with the v1! The documentation didn't say that it would specifically, but it looks like it does in fact work.

Actually it works, and in fact I have it even working with sunshine on an old laptop with nvidia geforce 940MX as a workaround since shield is not supported on that graphics card🙂

It is unfortunately a bit janky if it does just go smoothly straight out of the gate, and since it is so new there isn't much support for it either :( Hit me up on discord and maybe I can help you out since I got it working on a couple of machines so far!

@@BaconNinjaFPV i managed to get it working, BULK isnt though. Tried it out with gaming and its very eye straining. I dont have a capture card so i cand do walksnail. Got one to recommend hopefully cheap?

@@DivisionRc yeah bulk was pretty flaky for me too. I got it working 3 out of 5 times, lol. You can usually pick up a 1080p USB one on Amazon for less than $30, but it will only be 30fps. Most of the ones that do higher frame rates are going to be closer to $100 or above that :(

Don't fly Walksnail on DJI goggles. Okay, gotcha. 👌 Other than that, very cool. I've got a set of V2 goggles I kept as backups to my goggles 2. And they're rooted. My pc is a bit old. But is an i7, 16 gig of ram and an Nvidia GeForce 1050Ti. Not sure about usb ports. The 1050Ti sufficient that you know? Stay greasy everyone. 🥓🤓

Unfortunatley you can't do this process with the Goggles 2 since they don't support WTFos and their root hacks. Maybe some day the awesome team over there will crack them and we will get some cool stuff like this though!

It's not "USB 3"... It's USB 2.0 over a Type-C Connection.

very true! it is technically USB 2's standard over a USB 3 port and cable. The reason I went with the nomenclature though is in my testing it performed better when using a USB 3 host bus adapter since it had more aggregate bandwidth available to it than a USB 2 standard host bus adapter does. Given that most of the time on a PC at least some of the USB ports are occupied by devices and the end user rarely knows which ports are on which HBA and how to best split those devices up to make room for a larger load on them, I just stuck to the nomenclature of USB 3 to avoid confusion :)

Indeed. In this implementation of it though, rather than use MSTSC to receive an RDP stream over TCP from another host machine it is hooking DWM's local frame rendering chain for whatever the primary monitor is as it would if it were connecting to localhost with no execution flags set.
