The portrait is a self-portrait of Elisabeth Vigée LeBrun with her daughter (Jeanne-Lucie-Louise). The original painting is from 1789 and Vigée LeBrun is one of my favorite painter (she was the official painter of Marie-Antoinette). If you are interested in painting restauration, I recommend Baumgartner Restoration channel. His video are very informative and beautiful.

Keep you cool up in the cherry picker, right? Also those 'Off' gadgets you put on your belt to keep the mosquitoes away really work too. For info, the Litolff paper is a list of music pieces, classified by the kind of instruments/ensemble they are are written for and by composer. That would be the remnant of a music score (Litolff was a publisher), like the last pages where they list the other pieces they have published.

No falling off the rails which the existing wheels and channels do. My husband already removed two doors but I’d love to restore the rest! Actually I’ve found a local carpenter he’s just super busy. I grew up near Newport News, Virginia. Almost all of the original downtown buildings from the late 19th century and early 20th century have been torn down and replaced with ugly modern structures. There are many vacant lots. When l was a kid in the 60s it was a bustling shopping and business district. Ava Gardner lived there a few years before she left to go to New York City. Her home is long gone.

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun is the lady in your painting to the left. The tour guide in Paris said she was one of Marie antoinettes favorite artists. She painted the infamous painting of Marie Antoinette in a Chemise Dress. It was controversial bc it was "below the queen" to be wearing basically undergarments thay was too plain and simple, and almost mocking those below her (though i think Marie was never malicious like that, just wanted to feel more free and less constrained) and then to show it to the world. She did many famous portraits of Marie. I actually have a little postcard of that painting on my vanity. She would escape the guillotine and flee to russia having success in a male dominated world/field. She would later get much recognition of her influence in the arts and her talent would really take off. I think that was more after her death, not sure?
@sandrab5477
@sandrab5477 11 месяцев назад
If you talk about Elisabeth Vigée LeBrun, she was very famous when she was still alive, especially after becoming the official painter of Marie-Antoinette and she realized many portraits of young queens and princesses in Europe. She was already known and praised for her talent when she was alive, she also opened a "school" and was selling paintings and antiquities. When the Bastille was taken, she had to leave France, as she was very close to the French royalty.

More info about the row houses and Charles S. Brown letter: The date on the postal stamp appears to be October 1898. There were two more row house on addresses on Ella Avenue, 6109 and 6111. The last of these houses to be demolished was 6109, which, according to property records and historical aerial imagery, was likely demolished in 2017. These row houses were constructed in 1897, further supporting the 1898 postal date. I just thought this was some interesting info on the row houses and the age of the junk mail.

Back of the music page is most likely music lesson reminders. A teacher tells the student to “accent the legato” which means to emphasize the connected notes. “Lightly staccato “ which means to play notes lightly and separated. Musical terms are in Italian, which is standard, even on a German paper.

Your museums can give you more details. Be careful of inked or type written , test those in a corner first to prevent ink blotching.

As other commentors have said, Litolff was a composer and music publisher. This is the back page of a piece of sheet music, and the hand written notes are musical directions/instructions from a music teacher. it reads: Accent the legato. Lightly (which is underlined) (ditto) staccatti. Hand and arm (I can't read the last word). My own music books are littered with similar annotations either written by myself or my teacher. You could be looking at the handwriting of one of the Browns as they were learning to play!
@michaelraymond952
@michaelraymond952 11 месяцев назад
Yes! I came to say exactly this. It may say “still” as in keep the arm and hand still and accent the legato notes or articulate to staccato notes with the fingers.
@Sammy-pi7up
@Sammy-pi7up 11 месяцев назад
@@michaelraymond952 You're probably right! I thought it might say 'stable' but then realised it didn't quite match the shape of the word. 'Still' seems more likely. I sympathise with this pupil, as I also used to get into trouble for lifting my hands to high off the keyboard when playing staccato. I'm also fairly certain it's the pupil who wrote these notes, as I would expect the teacher to know how to spell staccato!

The "Collection Litolff" reads from upper left: Comprehensive catalogue - free of charge via all music shops. Educational/instructional books. The upper right features some french text I can't translate. So, it's a brochure of school books for the different listed styles. Litolff, as others already wrote, was a 1/2 Alsacian, 1/2 Scottish composer born in London in 1818, who traveled France, the Lowlands, Germany and Poland. He also owned his dead friend - whose widow he married -'s publishing house in Braunschweig, Germany, between 1856 and 1860; his adoptive son, who died in 1912, changed the name to "Collection Litolff" in 1864, by which time they had already had a store in New York. Since 1940 they belong to C. F. Peters, an internationally active music publishing house.
@sandrab5477
@sandrab5477 11 месяцев назад
For the French text, it's all related to musical suites. For exemple, on the Violin solo column, I can read "Suite 1 : études spéciales / Suite 2 : études brillantes / Suite 3 : études d'artistes" (special studies / bright studies / artists studies) Guess they are lists of available studies to purchase. Still on violin solo column, you can read "Gaviniès, P. Les 24 Matinées" and Pierre Gaviniès is a French violinist and composer (1728-1800) and wikipedia says about Les 24 matinées (the 24 mornings) "His seminal work is the 24 Matinées published in 1794, a compilation of violin studies that includes extremely complex passages with the main goal of developing bowing facility". On the top right corner, the text says "Les ouvrages marqués par {missing word} ne sont pas vendus en France" or "The documents marked by {missing word} are not sold in France".

Henry Charles Litolff (7 August 1818[1] - 5 August 1891) was a British virtuoso pianist, composer of Romantic music, and music publisher. A prolific composer, he is today known mainly for a single brief work - the scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No. 4 in D minor - and remembered as the founder of the Collection Litolff (today part of Edition Peters), a highly regarded publishing imprint of classical music scores. In Leipzig, Germany is a very intersting archive.

Congratulations on finding the exact pattern of the iron crown and also the behind the walls items. I would suspect an appropriately placed hole on the stuck doors might yield more finds and aid in getting them back on track.

TIP: Use Avon Skin-So-Soft lotion. It contains citronella and helps ward off mosquitos. It won't, unfortunately, stop them all. But it slows them down significantly. I'm allergic to DEET and it's the only thing that helped when I lived in Florida. It comes in a spray. So, spray down the area where you are going to be working as well as yourself. This only works with the Original Scent version. Excellent work. I'm really excited by your historic finds. You might want to try a UV light on the post card - sometimes ink that has been obscured by age or grease fluoresces slightly differently than the stain, and you can make out details. It's worth a try if you have a black light available.

I feel so excited to see so many evidences of your house's history. I really hope you'll find more of these. I guess you'll be having a little treasure hunt soon. I remember how excited I was when we were putting new windows in our house and we found old newspapers behind the sills with dates when the old ones were put in. Or when we were renovating a part of our storage buildings into an apartment and we found old (cheap) wine bottles under the floors along with some horseshoes (I had no idea why the builders put them there lol) and there was one cinder block with a date when the building was constructed. It was an amazing to see that after 63 years the cement floors and plaster on the walls was still in amazing shape after enduring so much with having their some chickens for years. The guys who were tearing everything to the bare blocks and ground it wasn't fun at all. They still get cold chills when they hear "tearing down plaster" phrase. As for cleaning and repairing your paintings I recommend Julian Baumgartner's channel.

Yes that little piece of paper so cool .... I love those bits of evidence of everyday life - the details of how things were done help me to get a sense of their lives. I guess an estate agent would send these little postcards to people who had registered interest in a property. No Internet back then ! Always makes me go "Yay" when I see 2ndESB has posted a new video. Look after yourselves in the heat, take it easy. ❤

What I wouldn't give to go back in time to show Mr. Brown all your videos and watch his reaction.

Save the scraps of old lath, it will come in handy when patching the holes you make in the walls. I have frequently had to use lath to space out the studs to the same level as the surrounding lath. Chip the plaster back 3-4 inches and patch with 1/4 or 3/8 drywall. This will be the structural patch and then you can hand float a skim coat of plaster to make the quality of the repair area harmonious with the surrounding wall surface.

The painting with the mother and daugther reminds me of a Elizabeth Vigée LeBrun's painting with her daugther !

I grew up in a house built in 1865. We were constantly finding little treasures and lost items. One of the best things about living in an old house! The biggest thing was a pie safe lined with 1930s newspaper tucked into a corner of the barn turned garage.

I am guessing that would be the same Marvin who has done the drawings for Mike (Rose Cottage) in Australia. Looks fantastic! Also both those paintings look like they needs a bit of conservation so that it can continue to bring joy for years to come.

It would be cool to out a little metal hatch in the part of the wall where the pocket doors close. It would be really neat little fairy door type of thing and a good way to make sure the tracks stay clear of future debris

Restored many homes having balloon construction when are no firebreaks. Many debris fallen top floor down to the sill plate. Either built in drawers in the bathrooms and hiding places in the rooms. Find a ton of old newspapers and things of history. We found a lot behind stair walls

Yay! Kim's here! I miss your vlogs, Kim! Kaleb the postal card is so cool! Can't wait to see those little artifacts framed and hanging in the hallway (or wherever you hang them). Fantastic progress with the electrical! And I'm excited about finding the specs on the mansard ironwork! Love you guys! P.S. Kaleb you need to find a Thermacell to keep the bugs off you while you work (or play). Very affordable and effective.

The Vigée Le Brun mother and daughter painting! My mom and I saw the original when we visited the Louvre together for the first time and fell in love with it. We bought a monochrome print I have hanging in my living room now!
