Back in the days of the USSR, I stayed at Intourist and Sputnik Hotels :) ... On every floor there was a "дежурная" where you could get a hot and sweet tea from the samovar. In the summer time there was kvass sold directly from a big tank truck in the streets and in the winter time you were able to buy this really creamy vanilla ice cream in the streets. Oh, I have some good memories of this time :)
Dezhurnayas are now a rarity although very very occasionaly you come across one. The kvas from big tank trucks still happen in Belarus and Transdniester in summer.
@@DailyBald my best memory was when we were celebrating New Year on Red Square in Moscow. That was in 1986/87. We stayed at Hotel Kosmos near ВДНХ at this time dezhurnayas were the norm... I also remember that my father and me did eat all the ice cream of the tour group which came as a desert after dinner and we were the only ones who didn't freeze outside afterwards. It was chilling -35°C :). All the best to you Benjamin! And thank you for all your nice travel vlogs, I really enjoy them!
@Jesse Its a meme. I'm pretty sure bald himself thought about that cause he was filming the room number for a few seconds. I don't get your point of your comment tbh.
Hi Benjamin, Thank you for your videos. I've been to Armenia too. It's really an amazing country with an outstanding culture and a lot of amazing people living there. If you ever come back to visit it again, please consider visiting Jermuk. I think you'd like it since it has several abandoned Soviet sanatoriums, a cinema and other buildings, that definitely will fit your channel. Jermuk was (and probably still is) a famous mineral water, thermal bath and health resort in the USSR. And it still operates, so you may get a feel of its' everyday life back in the days.
Glad to see the new channel with some videos to temporarily satisfy my withdrawal symptoms of Bald and Bankrupt addiction. I hope you’re all right. 🌟🌟🌟
2019 ,stayed at the eco resort near Tate, spectacular view across the valley, whole chalet to myself,$100,per night in England,French Alps...$12. Armenia is totally affordable and enjoyable,,hopefully more people will give it a try, year round. Skiing in the Caucasus is a bargain too.
You would LOVE Hotel Kiev in city center of Bratislava, Bald! Their marketing is awesome. They are telling people that everything is 60s style, but they never renovated it ever. Though, not soviet, but czechoslovakian, which is also pretty cool
I am really enjoying your videos, they look truly wonderful and beautiful place to visit, great down to earth, great people , these places that i would never have got to see if it wasnt for you, thank you Ben, for sharing your travels with us all, all the best 👍🙂
I miss the Bald that caught sketchy buses and questionable trains. You look too cushy driving those rental cars. 😋 Hey, I'm all for comfort, but the episodes of you hitchhiking seem to take you deeper into the culture. Keep up the videos. Maybe we'll cross paths some day.
Oh wow! Those billiard tables! If they are stone based, awesome! Bald, go back and ask to buy them, worth $20-30k a piece if stone and in reasonable condition.
Since he supported anti govmt protesters in an unnamed country, I doubt he'd go, it doesn't take much to get locked in a cage somewhere in mainland China apparently
If I was traveling through there that would be the hotel I would stay in! I want those Brass front doors and windows! Armenia has some seriously nice pop music too!
For your next trip there is an extinct volcano nearby that you can drive up. You might not have seen it as in the winter it tends to be wrapped in an ice cloud. It has a church and a lake at the top. A decent 4x4 is essential, or a Zhiguli will also do it :)
This video just popped up on my home page, I immediately subscribed. I had no idea you started a new channel here, I suggest you mention it in upcoming videos on your main channel. What this world needs is MORE BALD! Thank you!
2:47 not so bad room in comparation for billiard salon. 12 us dollar is ok price. In my country room like this will be probably 15 or 17 us dollar per night.
Lada's can still be seen here in Medellín COLOMBIA 🇨🇴 these days but they are a rare find. I remember hoping into one that was a yellow taxi 🚖 back in the late 80s. I was in the front passenger seat and since I was a tall long legged teen from The US 🇺🇲 visiting my COLOMBIAN 🇨🇴 family I couldn't fit in. I had to sit sideways 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣. There were even Zastavas as taxis.
Yep i would. Looked clean quiet and 16€ a night sounds good 2 me. In 2018 stayed in Göteborg in a hostel with 8 other random strangers in the same room and payed 18€. The bathroom was shared by the whole floor... surprisingly it was very clean. You could also have a smol breakfast. But sharing a room with 8 random dudes isn't relaxing.
Great video thanks ! There is a football club called 'Alashkert' who have played in European competition recently. They played St.Johnstone in Scotland. Yes the Armenian writing is VERY sqiggley,as is Georgias. !
I remember the Alashkert vs St. Jones game very well. It was very surprising for a debutant Armenian team to eliminate a Scottish team. Anyways, a few years later (I think it was back in 2018) Scotland striked back with Celtic not leaving any chances to Alashkert. As for the name "Alashkert", a lot of things in Armenia are named after places in Western Armenia, or nowadays Eastern Turkey. Alashkerk was -and still is- a city, albeit nowadays no Armenians live there. Many Armenians from the cities near Sevan lake are the descendants of Armenians living in Alashkert.
What I really don't get about Brutalism (the architectual style seemingly all of the former USSR was built in) is that it looks so... unpleasant from the outside (just huge concrete blocks) but on the inside they put all this marvelous stuff and you are like "dudes... if you put as much care and effort on the outside of the buildings, the towns wouldn't look so depressing..." But maybe that's just an arrogant "Western" view on the former Soviet Union?
Every video great you and Baldr are the best love you guys thanks for trying to keep us together even with circumstances that our out of your control great work never doubt yourself
