Been there, so feel for ya! The good news is if you get a phone call you probably aren’t in any trouble at all, unless you say something really stupid. If you are really getting in trouble you’ll get a letter of investigation that comes through as certified mail, then it’s time to start sweating it 😰

The complainer is probably part of the same group of people who want to see warbirds permanently grounded/banned after the B-17 crash. Just another symptom of this "ban hammer" mentality that has taken a hold of modern society; wanting more restrictions on hobbies in the name of "safety".

It could be a troll doing it despite knowing that what he's doing is safe and should be legal, either just to mess with Peter or hoping that there will be some little technicality he gets caught on. There should be some penalty for frivolous reporting if there isn't already, but it would need to be carefully defined and just strict enough that people can't report for no reason or ignorantly without citing some regulation or a practical safety concern, but not so strict that it scares people away from reporting. The system just isn't made for the internet age, people could swamp the FAA with complaints against people they don't like, or just for fun, or to drown out legitimate complaints, or to waste a small amount of the agencies resources (some people REALLY dislike the FAA) I hope that you're right and it was just someone feeling uneasy, at least then they would have good intentions (but yeah, they should just let people be free anyways!)

Reminds me of the time in the 1970's when I buzzed my fiancee in the 1940 Taylorcraft I rebuilt. The FAA got a complaint from someone in a high-rise office building I flew past and when the they asked her if she could identify the airplane she said, "Hell, he was so close I could recognize the pilot!"

This has been going on forever. 60 years ago, when I was a kid, there was a gocart club on fields adjacent to the airport. With planes constantly roaring overhead, the neighbors over a mile away had the gocarts banned for 'noise'. Lots of kids were disappointed.

Imma report this guy so he can't do what he loves ever again." I get that people are concerned for your safety. People _have_ lost their lives in similar situations (recently even.) But the most you can really do is voice your concerns, and if they want to be an idiot anyways (or in Peter's case, you actually know what you're doing) then there's really not a lot you can do. As long as they aren't putting others in danger with their acts, why do you care what other people are doing? It doesn't affect you. You're not a concerned citizen looking out for the safety of others. This guy is smarter than you'll ever be. Let the man fly.

The person reporting to the faa is like the majority of the australian public (i live there) "i cant understand or am jealous therefore it shouldnt be allowed" Neighbour complains i have to many cars (none of their business) makes up reasons why they are causing them greif from 9 houses away, when that fails.. calls the local council, inspector says its fine... resorts to slashing all my tyres on all my cars besides the one that isnt registered for road use, then a month later has the audacity to come knock on my door and ask for a jump start as she needs to go to work.... No different to the people on the local suburb facebook groups. Someone drifts a round about at 3am, theres no one on the road. One person five kilometers away hears it... calls police. Goes down to get their number plate, then complains how dangerous it is... granted its illegal. But you went there soley to dob them in. You were in no danger in your house 5km away... why bother going to all that trouble just to put yourself closer to the "danger"... cant fathom it. And its usually people with dents in their cars who complain... like. Just because you crash weekly doesnt mean mr drifter guy does. He has no dents. You do. (Sorry got off topic a bit, busy bodies annoy me)

@@Colt45hatchback I'm sorry about your cars, that's truly an arsehole thing for your neighbour to do (if it was actually him and not someone else), the drifting thing though, its illegal for a reason, if its done anywhere on public roads or property it should be reported, even if the road is "clear" and its 3am, if there is even a 1% chance someone might end up walking or driving down that road while your drifting its worth reporting, just because its unlikely to happen doesn't make it all ok for that one unlucky bastard who gets killed or injured by someone drifting on public roads at 3am in the morning. Also people who drift on the roads often don't make sure its clear, they also often do it in suburbs where if they loose control its not impossible that they could end up hitting someone's house, even if they don't hit a house if they take out a sign or something else that costs the council money to repair. People who drift often also do burnouts and as someone who has breathing difficulties due to smoke (woodfires if there are a lot and they continue for a while, or tire smoke e.t.c), and also gets migraines from smoke, I can tell you that even a block or two away the tire smoke from someone doing a decent burnout can trigger a migraine and if done often enough cause minor breathing difficulties. My take is if its illegal, and its in no way necessary or benefiting anyone and is possibly hurting or could hurt people it should 100% be reported. If you want to drift or do burnouts, do it on private property where you cant hurt anyone or on a track day, end of story.

@@Ridiric it was most definatly the same woman i got her fat ass on camera with scissors beside my car. Not that i was able to get reimbursed for the damage as there was no clear image of her face in the footage unfortunatly for me... glad i moved house. And I generally agree with what you are saying. But in this instance i dont think its an issue of danger for anyone other than the drifter himself and even then the worst thing he can hit is a farm fence 300m from the kerb or possiby a sign on the round about itself. I now live in a rural area, there is a town 5km away from the nearest round about, its a large well lit one (just grazing paddocks around it for 5km minimum) one direction goes to a sale yard which is closed at night time, the other go to the town and the next major town. Aside from if there is an event on at the fairgrounds. You "may" see one car in 3 hours there after 10pm... i feel if they are going to do it anyway. The middle of nowhere is the best place for it. The noise would be hardly noticeable and i doubt the smoke would travel that far in a thick enough form to be an issue. Idk. Cant really be mad at them myself. If it was during the day when its sorta busy or if the road was highly populated with housing i could see the issue. But where it is and how the traffic is. I dont see any harm in it provided they keep it in the disused areas.

I do agree that if they are going to do it anyway, doing it somewhere rural like that where the chance is super remote that anything could happen is the preferred option, I still would rather they didn't and kept it to track days or private property. I don't live rural though, and we get quite a few hot heads doing drifting and burnouts near where I live (Campbelltown NSW), they tend to do it late at night or in the industrial areas on the weekends, but there is still enough traffic that no matter what time you do it there is a decent chance another car might show up, and houses, signs and other property is only 2m to 10m off the side of the road, which is why I have a zero tolerance to people who want to do that stuff on public roads and property, keep it on the track or private property.

@Mystery Bag with regards to the FARs and CARs, you dont get held criminally responsible unless you are criminally negligent, ignorant, or intentional. they just require you (for most of the time) to either correct your actions or cease and desist. this is all in part of SMS, or the FAA equivalent. I'm currently studying for bachelors of aviation and I know how bad a lack or fear of reporting can do this industry. (Ref. FAA's SMS) lets say: A decision or action of a PIC/PF (Pilot in Command/Pilot Flying) has led to an incident aboard an airplane. in YOUR judgement, you believe it should be reported to a safety manager. would you write the report knowing that you risk punishment yourself? or would you not report and risk the lives of future passengers and crews?

@@imcool00011 The FAA is a pretty large organization. The people involved with overseeing the building of airliners probably work in a different department than the guy that called him. Also the issues with Boeing and oversight are a lot more complex than your post would imply. Yes there was wrongdoing but no one broke any laws per se. It was more of a systemic failure of the rules. These kinds of issues generally only come to light after a major problem occurs unfortunately.

You should take a look at LSA aircraft. Getting into it myself in the same area as you and the community is awesome and it opens up so many more possibilities, especially with them massively increasing the weight limit. And you can still build your own!
