Tesla's are no known for their reliability, and Tesla is known for not being very friendly to owners who are out of warranty. I will buy an EV (probably a model S), but it will be a lease and I will get rid of it before the warranty ends.

And the litigious nature of our society does not help - companies do not want to open themselves up to suits when people make mods and break unforseen bits and get hurt or even killed. Maybe they need something like Microsoft's Hardware Certification Lab but in reverse - a way for modders to submit software mods to the full system regression testing that the manufacturer does. But that takes time and effort and money - who is going to pay for it? Who controls it?

Tesla isn't necessarily preventing him from repairing this. It's one thing to suggest that manufacturers shouldn't be able to prevent *you* or someone else from fixing it. It's another entirely to demand they do it. Obviously, with EVs, this will become a much larger issue because the average person is even less qualified to work on these than ICE cars.

Voice of reason here. Dealers won't rebuild your engine or transmission, either. Probably not your differential. They don't take apart modules and reflow solder or replace bad capacitors. They want to change the whole thing, send the old one back to the manufacturer and know that the repair is at least warranteeable for some period of time. What happens if they do the $1000 repair and then 5 months later something else happens? You'd be pissed, that's what would happen.

All the best to Rossmann and the right to repair movement. I've supported him and its movement for ages. BUT guess what guys, there's a HUGE difference between a circuit board and a Tesla HV battery pack. The reason Tesla "wouldn't wan't that" is because the high risk of some future "authorised" unofficial Tesla SC unsuccessfully replacing a Tesla battery pack. Therefore they are unable to escalate the the service visit internally to investigate what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening. It's not about making a few extra bucks for Tesla. It's regards to the safety for the customer the safety for the company. Just the logistics behind a battery replacement, e.g load, ship and store a Tesla HV battery pack requires immense and specific knowledge. And it requires proper consequences if something goes wrong or isn't done properly. People can be seriously injured, or even worse, thus allowing the risk of external companies dealing with this isn't for the best for anyone, except greedy customers and workshops.

@AndrewAMartin
@AndrewAMartin 3 года назад
@@TheSteinbitt I would bet it's more about the time to replace the whole pack vs. finding and replacing an individual cell or ten or whatever. Replacing the whole pack gets the customer back on the road faster, and the bad pack can then go through diagnostics and either be fixed or used as parts for other packs. We don't have any insight into what happens to the bad packs that Tesla replaces, but I'm pretty sure they're not just dumping them...

Yes, but the mechanic's shop is also full of trained Monkeys that have no idea what their doing in regards to spark plugs. All they know is "engine no work, add new engine." Truth is, most mechanics and technicians are just not trained to deal with batteries, and most dealers aren't going to spend the money to buy the necessary equipment and train them when they make more money just selling new batteries, and get a massive tax write off (In some states) for sending the old batteries back to the manufacture to be recycled. Tesla was smart. The only way electric cars and namely batteries can be handled properly is when you cut out the middle man. As long as dealerships are a thing, until the manufactures or the government or both put a gun to their head, they aren't going to handle this right. And even once they do. look at what happened to Cadillac. Dealerships left, right, and center dropped them like a rock in the ocean once they heard about their electrification plans...

Automotive News published a report on Thursday of this week noting that EVs were 2.3 times more expensive to service than ICE vehicles after three months of ownership. Analytics firm We Predict compiled the data by looking at roughly 19 million vehicles between the 2016 and 2021 model years. That figure drops to just 1.6 times more expensive after one year, the report noted, as a result of a 77% drop in maintenance costs and a decline in repair costs. The data showed that service techs spend about twice as much time diagnosing problems with EVs as they do with regular gas vehicles. They spend about 1.5 times longer fixing them and the labor rate for repairs was about 1.3 times higher. "It's an industry in launch. This is the launch factor you're seeing," said Renee Stephens, a vice president at We Predict. EVs had a high rate of wheel problems, the study found. This was attributed to wear and tear associated with carrying bulky batteries.

@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 2 года назад
Repairing the pack is not a structural issue. The entire pack was designed to be removable in minutes. Since it is sealed, it takes time to get the covers off, since they are bolted on and then sealed with silicon glue to make them absolutely waterproof. Once they are fixed, which can be relatively simple once you get inside, you just reverse the process. Seal and bolt the covers back on. Install the pack, plug it in, good to go. If you want to see what this looks like, Gruber Motors has videos on RU-vid where they do this from start to finish.

The thing about those Lithium Ion Batteries is that they have chemical components that degrade over time, so it doesn't matter if the car is an everyday driver or sits in the garage 6 days a week, it's only a matter of time before they fail. Time, not mileage, is the factor there. That's why folks like me who work from home and drive very little have no economic incentive to invest in an electric vehicle. I don't drive enough for it to save me any money in the long run. Electric is a nice option for city-folks, but internal combustion isn't going away anytime soon... unless the government outright bans it and thus screws people like me over, which I wouldn't put past them at this point.

Mileage is still a factor... Batteries are commonly rated on charge cycles (when you discharge and charge) which is basically a way to describe mileage. But you're right that time is also a big factor that largely isn't an issue with ICE cars other than for things like rust or rubber degradation (especially tires on heavier cars).
@danielnelson4881
@danielnelson4881 2 года назад
@@justhecuke "on heavier cars" speaking of electric vehicles.... Crash ratings are going to have to improve drastically considering *just how much extra weight* a Tesla, or any electric vehicle is carrying around. Weight that's low to the ground and may not make the car feel sluggish in the corners. Weight that can easily be countered by the blistering torque of electricity to make the car never feel slow. But also weight that will kill a family of four in a 97 dodge caravan with horrifying efficiency should they get into more than just a 25 mph fender bender. Newer cars with their disposable, shock absorbing body panels that are designed to be absolutely demolished in a crash and absorb the impact, so that the family of four's bodies don't, are likely going to fare just fine, if not a bit diminished in their effectiveness... But that still leaves tens of thousands of cars on the roads, in every country, that are basically going to be rendered obsolete, death traps, to drive. As the heavy freight train electric vehicles, and primarily SUVs and trucks, become more common as electric becomes more prevalent. Once again, being poor is going to be ever further a death sentence, as some rich asshole comes barreling over you, in your 2500 lb 95 civic. Him in his 11,000 pound, lifted, full sized electric truck, likely on his phone (he's important afterall), and all without a care or a thought to your safety or well being. Full autonomy is a ways away (secretly I hope it gets sabotaged and never comes into fruition anyway, eff the good of mankind, I wanna drive damnit!). Big, heavy, electric SUVs and trucks, are not.
@justhecuke
@justhecuke 2 года назад
@@danielnelson4881 In many ways, those smaller cars are safer in head on collisions because the bigger vehicles will go up and over. There's been a few high profile examples of this with a recent one happening to a baseball player, if memory serves. Then there's also the added maneuverability and handling of a smaller car vs. a bigger one that makes it less likely to lose control or simply tip over. But, you're right that bigger, heavier cars pose safety issues for other cars. However, our society usually doesn't require that you look out for the safety of others beyond normal care. We don't make a fuss about bicyclists killing pedestrians or fruit-bearing trees killing pedestrians and car windshields (unripe pine cones being a common example in the California Bay Area). Just not something that we normally do.
@danielnelson4881
@danielnelson4881 2 года назад
@@justhecuke I was referring specifically to the weight, not necessarily the size, although the two are usually connected. The cars affected by this won't all be small, and definitely won't all be able to go under the freight train of electric vehicle stampeding toward it. I'm referring simply to older vehicles that weren't designed with crumple zones in mind. Also I never said anyone was going to make a fuss out of it, just that if you drive one of these pre crumple-zone vehicles, crashes are going to be many times more deadly for you with the rising numbers of heavy electric vehicles, and the higher possibility that the car you just got in a head on collision with is one of them. Old collector cars are going to become much more dangerous to drive than they already are, with the kinetic energy of a 10,000 pound electric car to keep in mind when taking them for a cruise.

The battery, if Toyota needed to replace it, was about $5000 but luckily I never needed to do that. Also, there were 3rd party batteries (refurbished) for a lot less than that. Some as low as $1500. The battery rebuild centers sound like a business opportunity waiting to happen. There is no excuse for having to replace an entire battery for minor issues that could be rebuilt. If the battery is made up of multiple small battery cells, maybe battery makers need to consider making small battery modules composed of, say 10 or 20 of the small cells, with multiple modules composing a battery, allowing the faulty battery module to be simply pulled out and replaced with a new one. Brilliantly placed advertisement Uncle Rich/Hoovie. You boys are benevolent evil geniuses. Anyway, this video made me think twice about ever buying a Tesla. I’m guessing hoovies other 500000 subscribers have the same sentiments. Tesla Ltd owes The Electrified Garage et al, mucho respecto for extending the Tesla’s planned obsolescence program.

Opening the battery pack and messing around is a liability problem. These packs can catch on fire, if you store it in a house or a condo\apartment garage it could burn everything down leading to fatalities and liability lawsuits. Whoever breathed on the pack last will get sued, that's why no one wants to touch it. Rich might be taking on a lot more risk than he realizes.

I saw a site recently doing a repair like this. Out of over 7000 cells there were 2 bad, but that is enough to take the whole battery down, as far as the software is concerned. Repair cost was $5500, and all the old cells are still all there, with the potential for another to fail at any time.

Hmm! I se the undercurrent here, so let me turn this to OPs favorite a gas car. OP just replaced 02 valves, which will taken the engine down. Then repair the two, with the potential for another fail at any time. Hey OP, its a mechanical device, it does happen, things break, wear out and the like. Your holy gas car is no exception- think Yugo for example

Rich: No Hoovie, don't try it I have the high ground! Hoovie: aaaahhhh! (Jumps towards uncle Rich and Rich cuts his arms and legs off and screams) I hate you but so gotta help me. Rich: I loved you Hoovie, you were my brother from another mother so of course I'll help, I'll let you burn in the lava pit and call your Emperor just in time to save your life so you can suffer horribly and live the rest of your life inside of a body suit with only 50 miles of range and then I'll be there only one who can increase it! Hoovie: thanks brother/uncle Rich (kneels in fear) I acknowledge that Tesla's force is strong with you! Rich: (grabs a bucket of chicken while laughing maniacally)!

lots of cars in good condition are going to sit in dealerships cause it‘s not worth swapping the battery.

And how many BMWs on this channel are big piles of eWaste. Batteries will become cheaper and cheaper and can be swapped in a few hours.

Of course but nobody cares about the damage it's all about short term "solutions"

@@iamwritingrightnow8217 My son had an S that was totaled out for the estimated suspension repair costs after a minor fender bender, the batteries are a concern but if you can't fix the cars and get the parts to fix them then the insurance companies just total them out and they wind up at a CoPart site. Rich's videos show the trials and tribulations of somebody trying to keep them on the road which isn't easy.

@@johnh8268 So I'm supposed to rely on the manufacturer to allow me to swap batteries and shops that I choose? That's a great notion but we used to be able to swap batteries in our cell phones, while you still can it's an involved process and unless you do it through the manufacturer they'll probably have some software logic that will brick it in case a third party battery is used. Don't get me wrong, BMWs are junk but in the case of any Tesla, a lease is your friend.

Sounds like the iPhone update some time ago, that slowed down older iPhones to „preserve the battery“, where in fact it meant „throw that old phone away and by a new one NOW!“ That’s what I expect from my car when entering in the morning. Unfortunately you cannot upgrade it to the new AMD Gaming console, with which it would at least serve as a realistic F1 arcade.
