I've always thought it would make more sense for the scout tier marines to also be the drivers/pilots. Most of the reaction time/reflexes, since that's the most common reason I've seen stated for marine pilots, without having to sacrifice a full power armored battle brother.
@BigMikeMcBastard
@BigMikeMcBastard Год назад
It's almost certainly never worth it. The benefit you get from faster reflexes etc. as a marine versus the chapter having serfs pilot their vehicles won't be more significant than the benefit you get from having an extra scout marine on the field. A scout marine would no doubt be better, but not THAT much better.

It’s explained in a few books as to why they are used to pilot vehicles, it’s largely because of reaction time and durability. 1:25 Terminal velocity isn't a constant; it has to take into account an objects mass, surface area, drag coefficient, the density of the medium through which it passes and the strength of the gravitational field. 120mph is about right for a skydiver, not for several tons of metal.

I always thought a landspeeder fills the role of a low flying attack helicopter. They're fast, lightly armored and can hit tanks from above. As to why astartes fly them...maybe to fly as fast and low as possible? Good reflexes help not getting hit by flak. It also doesn't hurt that they probably have a higher G-force ceiling. I think most (almost all) vehicles look ridiculous in 40K. It's one of the reasons I never got into playing or collecting complete armies, just grabbing the odd mini for painting an collecting. I think what could make the speeders look a little better would be to replace at least one Space Marine with a 28mm vehicle driver model from something like Bolt Action. They could be the pilot and then the Space Marine adds the firepower. It'd have the added advantage of selling the Space Marine as a 10 foot tall super soldier.
@lazerhosen
@lazerhosen Год назад
Most of the vehicles in 40k look ridiculous next to miniatures for the same reason Star Wars action figure vehicles look ridiculous next to your figures: the scale is squished, and not consistently across the model. Think about how a Leman Russ battle tank is depicted in artwork vs how it looks on the table. The other problem most vehicles face is that everything else in the army is mounted on a base, and many vehicles are not, so there is a visual consistency missing there as well.

I would honestly love if there were some chapter serf minis included in the ten men boxes, or if there were basically two options for each ten men box, one with serfs and one without. Just some servitors and/or normal humans working alongside the Space Marines, carrying weapons or ammunition crates, cleaning swords, maybe holding a Lieutenant's helmet or some religious imagery, like the serfs in the Grimaldus and Retinue box. I will say, I also think the landspeeder looks derpy. That being said, even in Soul Hunter, Septimus, the human pilot, is often described as slow and unable to pilot the thunderhawk as well as a space marine. It's the same argument for every Astartes unit, while you could have humans for any of the roles (pilot, tech marines, apothecaries, etc), they wouldn't be quite as capable.
@tajj7

I think if you think of pretty much every like action hero movie, when there is a chopper or plane, very often the generic pilot guy just dies or panics or just generally sucks so I think it kind of makes sense. You have a very tough pilot, who has super senses, is battle hardened to not panic or miss shots under fire, who then if the vehicle is downed is a useful soldier.

Well, the Land speeder dpes make some sense lore-wise at least While fighting on the ground, it is sometimes necessary to have heavy weapons at a shortest time possible from a flank or rear position to where your main offence/defence takes place, for example behind an enemy tank assault, tearing it apart from behind and getting away just as fast. The pilot has to be a space marine for a number of reasons. One-they can be easily replaced in combat in case the pilot is wounded (as space marines cannot have their own offensive human troops, only navy and PDF). Two-you can sacrifice pilot protection for a degree of structural integrity of the vehicle itself without increasing the vehicle's mass, as the power armor gives a decent protection from small arms and light artillery. Third-reaction and targeting. Space marines have targeting matrixes integrated into their helmets, which makes them able to both pilot at great speeds without much risk and target incredibly quickly. All in all-its a useful design, that grants them an incredibly mobile weapons platform and fire support Also-love the design, fits the overall aesthetic)

I think land speeders make sense if you think of them in terms of vehicles used by special forces today. High speed, lightly armored vehicles that can still carry an impressive array of weapon systems. The design of the land speeder makes sense, as you said space marines are already heavily armored, so the vehicle doesn't need to be. Two Marines could quickly reach a forward observation point to scout for enemy troop movements or intercept enemy recon teams. In these examples the Land Speeder is absolutely the tool for the job for the mobility it offers the Space Marines the ability to have a large battlespace presence while being a numerically inferior force.

Love the old model, clunky but effective... On a strategy point of view, having a way to carry heavy weaponry across physical obstacles is a must. offering heavy supresing fire to cover your asault marines werever they go is almost essential.... Most moder army use fast travel light armored vehicle, they tend to yeild lots of firepower to cover infantry an disable small fortifications. a good example is the german wiesel... In the wole lore of 40k , in witch many thing have gone wrong in the last decade, land speeders are one of the most tacticaly and lorewise realist concept. The model is so iconic of old space marine logic : ugly but fonctionnal. Even the armor is logic, lorewise, if you shot one down, you could got up to 4 angry overpowered warriors to deal with , it might even be behind your line...

I think they should go back in that direction but solve the whole chilling on the couch look somehow so it looks less silly. Maybe make it like an extra big jump pack with mounted guns or something, where the marines are mounted onto the front rather than sitting. Massive amounts of armor on a recon vehicle isn't all that necessary when power armor is insanely durable anyways.

The Storm was mentioned, but there's two missed; the Tempest, The DA Vengence. The Stormwolf, Stormtalon and Stormraven also suffer from the 'Flying Brick' look, and either look like a shrunk Thunderhawk, or a kid playing with Lego....

I made all my black templar speeders with Neophyte gunners and just Initiate pilots, fits with the mentor and student feel.

The reason why a Space Marine flies the land speeder is simple. It's an open cockpit. These things are deployed from very high up in the planets atmosphere at times. Standard humans would need specialized gear to even survive the decent. Then take into account that they are flying into an active battlefield, where an unarmored or lightly armored human would be easily killed by a stray shot, crashing a vehicle that is hard to maintain and possibly killing the gunner who is also a Space Marine.

That was some really cool advice about details you don't like after the painting is finished. They look a lot better and not like the Land Speeder in the Ultramarines movie, (just sitting there).

IDK about anybody else but if I was zipping around in a fragile open top combat vehicle in the 41st millennium, I'd be a lot happier if I was doing in some power armour. I'm biased though, the land speeder storm is on of my favourite vehicles from both from the look of the model but also how I'd imagine the scouts inserting around a battlefield on it. Best part of the hobby, there's an aesthetic for everyone

seen a few quite good looking stretched versions of the land speeder model the first i saw was in a white dwarf where they went for a Vietnam era Huey feel

"Arkham Land." Mark Hamil double dip name as the most famous land speeder pilot and Arkham Asylum's most infamous resident.

Personally, I would *remake them in a dreadnough pattern:* 1 marine drives them, and it's a fatally woulded one, kept alivebby the machine. It would explain their existance and slow speed, that is more akin to hovering over the battlefield with a personal jetpack. The 3d model overhauling would allow room for fixing (or more easily ignore) the 3rd issue, that you didn't mention: the gun is off the axis, thus recoil affects flying.

15:40 Now, right there is a teeny little legal-loophole that might allow important Imperial Guard characters such as Commissars to ride Land Speeders.

The idea of the open topped land speeders, especially the first two examples, was that they were cut down for weight. They couldn't put much armor on it because they wanted it to go fast, and they didn't need much light armor because space marine armor is as good as anything they can add. To me I always wanted something more like a deth kopta. Just strap a marine into a little helicopter with a couple guns attached to the sides. Add some aerodynamics and make it actually look like a buggy, with enough frame to hold it together. My biggest complaint about the original two is they look like rockets strapped to the back of the marines couch. The lack of armor and bulk in the vehicle doesn't bother me. It's the second marine and the lack of structure. Cool video overall

The real problem for me, that I took care with some 3D printed pieces... Is just the open cockpit (and the third marines on the storm speeder yes, but I took care of it too).
