Adam, you like flat light because you're a freaking genius. You're experienced, you've learnt to look up and down and all around. Screw the obvious, search out the unique and personal. I love shooting in flat light. I love overcast days. This modern HDR looking stuff sells but the images I want on my walls are muted, pastel dreams and stories told in 256 shades of grey. You are surrounded by some very skilled landscape photographers but your experience and knowledge of composition shine through. Great video and it looked like you guys had a blast. The combination of you and Hardcastle is epic.

That second shot of the burnt trees was fantastic. There's something I love about that image, it's the kind of image you can loose yourself in.

I am sure others say it to you all the time but you really do have a fab eye for an image and the pencil drawing landscape was a great example of that - almost LS Lowry like in the landscape ! Once again you have found something different. It's a pity you n Thomas didn't have more time to explore that area you found. TFS

That last image of the burnt trees is incredible. Looks like a drawing. I like that you enjoy the mountain landscapes and also finding those gold nuggets. Spices it up. Also makes me realize that maybe we all don't have to drive days on end to find a good composition. Thanks Adam.

Yes, the dramatic images are dramatic, but the intimate images are artistic and fascinating in their own way. I can see them as a subtle grouping of 8x10 prints on wall in study, or other quiet area. Very nice!

The view from the boat you float is fantastic! The pano is beautiful and the 2017 image @ 9:45 is awesome. The fine vertical lines of the trees with the wavy contour lines of the hills really grab your attention and draw you in for a closer look.

Adam, Loved the burnt trees. While the grandiose vista shots are cool, I do like to shoot this kind of stuff too. Back in late 70's I attended a workshop put on by Freeman Patterson in Kelowna and was inspired by his way of isolating elements in a scene and making use of hidden shapes and patterns. Keep doing this kind of stuff. I find by just getting closer, it opens up a whole new world !

It’s vital to photograph what you are drawn to as its you being true to yourself. Also, by doing so you demonstrate to me another way of interpreting a scene, and that’s really helpful. Short videos are fine by me. I follow all 4 photogs in this series, so for me I’m looking forward to more diverse content. Although, I enjoy all of your work and all are great teachers in different ways. Cheers Adam. All 4 of you should have done a ‘what winter gloves I wear’ segment. Cold hands are my personal winter gripe.
@QuietLightPhoto

These guys are pretty good for gloves. Nick and Thomas have gloves from these guys and I have an older pair that works quite well. Not perfect but it is hard to find warm mitts that are also functional for photography without freezing your hands off. us.photographygloves.com/collections/all

Hi Adam! Wonderful episode. I have always been drawn to the dramatic landscape, a brilliant sunset and the like. Watching your videos for the last year has helped me develop an appreciation for the more subtle but equally compelling compositions possible in the so called "flat" light. As always, thanks for sharing!

Adam, I believe shooting in flat light offers a different kind of challenge where we learn to parse-out subtle composition. Some say lack of lighting direction sucks, but as one of my chief petty officers in the Navy used to say, "Mitchell, Embrace the suck!" Nice work, Sir. Thank-You, Mike

I LOVE those shots of the burnt trees! For me those sorts of shots are really nice when juxtaposed against the standard "beauty shots". I tend to think of how images work together as a group after I find a composition that works. The detail shots like your tree trunk and snow, are what gives the deeper personality to any location. Great stuff!

I have always loved the subtle revealing qualities of soft light. You can make these kind of images almost anywhere at almost any time of day with more or less any camera/lens. You don't need an amazing view, spectacular light or the dramatic perspective of an ultra-wide lens.You just need a keen eye and an appreciation for pattern and form. Beautiful images. I would love to see more like this. Very inspiring.
