Excited to see your upcoming videos. Spontaneous trips are the best. Going unprepared and coming back with some exquisite work is a really great feeling. Always an inspiration! Just last week i found myself shooting some seascapes and I've never had a clear mind or clarity in my shots unlike before. I think your videos are playing a huge role in my growth. Thank you, Thomas!

Great video! Personal and technical insights, thoughts, photography practicalities and motivations explored, your pleasant voice without the distraction of music - and you're clearly comfortable with your fresh start. I enjoy the in-the-studio videos almost as much as the on site ones. For me, this is the winning formula! Thank you for all you've done and continue to do, Thomas. Your calendar looks great on my wall, by the way :)

Up here in Canada, since it's so cold, there sometimes isn't much to do. Not every goes to the outdoors rinks, or skis, snowboards or snowshoes. So the people that don't do that stuff entertain each other, I think that's why we have so many comedians out of Canada. Glad you had a great time Thomas, can't wait for the next one!

Thomas, thank you, as your last video motivated me to get up to Abraham Lake myself, and it was (in terms of my satisfaction with my images) the most successful day of photography I can remember having. I almost had the opposite 'issue' - though I wouldn't really call it that - in that I couldn't stop shooting the details. I have more amazing detail shots of the bubbles in ice than I'll ever know what to do with! And still managed to come away with some great landscape shots too. The lake is so giving! Thanks again, and I hope you can explore more of our beautiful province and country in the future!

I agree with your choice, the picture with the bubbles on the ice and the mountains in the background, just beautiful! As for the first with the diagonal leading line in the snow and the rosy sky over the mountain, it is very beautiful too! I have learned a lot with the simple way you interpret the places where you go and the result of your photos, sometimes you transform a photo with color without great glare in a spectacular black and white photo! Could this photo work in a "sepia" environment?!?!?!?! Hey, continue to inspire us with your creativity!

Glad you had a wonderful time in Canada, Thomas. I always enjoy seeing your stunning work and hearing your explanations on how you create your images. As I said in my last comment to your previous video, I made it out to Vermillion Lakes in Banff on Sunday. It was my first photo outing of 2019 and I was so excited. The sunrise at Vermillion was spectacular, but I unfortunately slipped and fell shortly afterwards. My 1DXII and 100-400 that were in my backpack got damaged during the fall; the lens separated from the camera, and both the camera’s and lens’ mounts were pretty mangled. Such as life... It’s going to be a big expense and long wait for everything to get fixed. I’m really looking forward to your Canadian videos more than ever now to get my photography fix. Cheers.

Hi Thomas, great to see you've got your mojo back - happy and excited with friends, and creative freedom in a new location. I liked all your photos. Thought I'd just mention that Rachel Lerch uploaded a new RU-vid vlog Q & A session, and said you'd be her first choice to collaborate with. She's in the Rockies and seems very positive and passionate about photography, so I thought maybe worth watching some of her Rockies vlogs. You were the first photographer I followed on RU-vid, and through your collaborations I now follow about about 10 including Brendan and Greg. Thanks for the inspiration and education, and the laughs!

Key words from this video for me are “I took the time...”. So true. You took the time to focus stack. If we all took the time we would have better compositions, more satisfying images. I usually get too excited and ‘snap’ so I’ll make more effort to take the time. Thanks.

Couldn't agree more. Thomas' general attitude could be summed up as "enjoy a nice day out interrupted by the occasional carefully thought out photo" I think! Rather than "go out and do photos" like I sometimes find myself thinking.

Great video as always, Thomas! I always love hearing you explain what you believe makes the photos you take "work" or "not work" as far as composition. Landscape photography is something I have very little experience with and struggle with a lot, so videos like this are extremely helpful in teaching me things to try to keep in mind and to look for. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures in Canada! Also I've been considering getting that same monitor for quite a while now. Judging from this video, I take it you would recommend it? lol

Thomas, your work is gorgeous as always, though I understand what you're saying about the first two photos. When you showed one of them, the first time in the video you filmed while photographing them, it was beautiful. I do think the best photograph is the ice with the bubbles! You were very brave going on that ice lake to take pictures. I don't think I would have been able to do it. Too afraid it would crack. Thanks for all the work and your wonderful channel!

Please don't forget the Panther falls. Go to the lookout for wedding veil falls and walk to the south end of the parking lot(sign is there) at the 1st switchback keep going straight north and you will see a trail that will take you under the panther falls. (about 800' waterfall drop} Sunwapta falls, Cross the bridge and go to the waters edge to get the island with the water going around both sides. (sunrise location) At Jasper go to maliaine lake canyon. You can walk on the frozen water up the canyon. I parked at the top of the falls and walked down to the gate and then walked up the water to the canyon... amazing!

Don’t you find it harder to edit photos on Retina/5K/4K screen? I noticed it’s way harder to judge focus and sharpness. Because of the small pixels, all images at 1:1 look sharp. I have to check at 3:1 scale to be sure. Also, I have a “conventional” (non retina) secondary monitor where I check the final edit for sharpness.

Hello Thomas, very nice pictures, I really love the colors of the ice. Quick question, did you change lenses between the images with the mountains in the background and the image of the detail of the ice bubbles? or was the same lens? Actually my question is, can you change lenses in cold condition like that?

Loved the Focus Stacked Methane Bubbles to the distant peaks bathed in that lovely glow! I feel the shot of the bubbles trapped in the ice, (Final image) would look better with the distracting white haze at the top of the image cropped out. As an abstract image perhaps a 1x1 square crop would frame it better?

Thomas Heaton is back. That "Tommy Heaton Gear reviewer" just wasnt as interesting. Lacklustre, bored, uninspired and frankly kind of miserable (it seemed). Its nice to see you back to being yourself after what appeared to be a bit of a low month. Noone is 100% all the time, but its good that you've bounced back so quickly. Your positivity seemed to have been stolen from you and Canada has returned it! Also, how hard you are on your photos is good. You balance enjoying an image, with analysing it, with learning from it. By doing a video like this it enables us to share the learning as well, which is always invaluable irrespective of skill level in my opinion. Keep on being you, happy new year!
