When I had aphids infest my greenhouse, I got a bunch of ladybugs and turned them loose inside, and closed the door. They had them completely eradicated in a week, I could swear I could hear the chomping each time I went in there. I couldn't believe how fast they took care of them.

I always tell my Daughter Never say that something is a failure if you learn from the experience. You should try a fan in your greenhouse it really helped my bug problems in my greenhouse. I don’t get very many bugs anymore. I hope you have a great weekend.

I’m a little surprised PW hasn’t set up a greenhouse/distribution facility in a zone 9 area. There’s a good amount of area in zone 9 that I would think it would be a good financial move for them.

Oh Janey I’m so sorry. I find I have to wear my walking shoes to garden. Wishing you a speedy recovery . Get your girls to help you in the garden. They may look at you like WHATEVER but deep down it will make them a gardener. Happened with my daughter. 🌻🌻🌻🌻🧡

You did a very good job disinfecting and cleaning your greenhouse. Another chore done for May 6th.😅Your indoor area that you overwintered the plants though should be cleaned just as thoroughly too, correct. Top to bottom of that room and every inch of surfaces that you have/had plants seedlings and older plants. I believe that would also give you peace of mind. Spring cleaning of it done. 😅

Janey, you have 25,000 happy subscribers!!👏. So sorry you lost you petunias...I’ve given up on superbells in my deck pots. They’ve been infested the last three years and I’ve disinfected my pots each time. Ah well time for something new! That’s the adventure of gardening! 🇨🇦

Your business is gardening and you're not new to it but still on the younger end of experience, so I think even failed experiments are worth it, because of gained knowledge. I think we have similar years of experience and I'm always trying things to experiment or push the envelope, just to see what's possible in my specific circumstances. Despite being in a particular grow zone, we still all have unique microclimates and conditions.

Sorry you lost those plants but it’s a good lesson for all of us! I overwintered a few supertunias and caught and treated for aphids EARLY. But I madly took cuttings and now I’m overrun with more plants!

Ugh… Aphids are the worst! I rank them up there with fungus gnats. YUCK! I’m sorry about the Supertunias. Thank you for experimenting for those of us in the higher zones. We appreciate the effort. The beauty of the bleach mixture is it breaks down and neutralizes within 24 hours so won’t harm the environment. It’s definitely the most “gentle” yet effective chemicals to use.

I saved some Supertunias from last year in my heated shed and I took cuttings and they’re doing great! If you haven’t thrown out the plants you could try taking cuttings and throw away the soil? Lucky me, Lady Bugs are living in my shed and I really believe they’re keeping my plants aphid free. Spider mites are more troubling for me but not super bad 🌱🌷🌺🌼

The Supertunia’s from hell! You will never want to look at Limoncello’s ever again, haha! It’s a lesson learned! We ALL have to deal with Aphids. I knew you generally use the “spray them off” method, but I’ve had great luck with using Neem oil. It only takes one, maybe two good sprays and your good

I propagated my supertunias. It was very easy and in about a month they had the same size they sell in the store. Now I have them all over the garden. Good luck getting rid of the aphids, they are a pain!

Janey, I live in the Phoenix area (also 9b). I bought Supertunias from Proven Winners online around mid/late October and I planted them then. I did have to cover them during our 6 or so frost nights. They stopped flowering inJanuary due to the cold but after our last frost date (mid Feb) they exploded with flowers. They are spilling over the edges of all pots. It may be worth experimenting this winter and trying to plant fresh supertunias to see if they hold up for you too.

Hi! I’m from Bakersfield, zone 9b and wanted to come and say the same. I have several from last year and they have all doubled or even tripled in size since cutting back this January. Most are blooming again already or about to and the plants look better than they’ve ever looked. I also experimented with propagating some in rain water outside and they’ve all rooted, now to plant them in soil (fingers crossed they’ll survive that too).

Stress tends to invite pests like aphids. Water blasts are helpful if you are waiting till the predators show up - or you import some (ladybugs released in the greenhouse would have cleared this infestation quickly). Without predator balance, how about a little IPM with some dilute dish soap? Highly effective against aphids and no more toxic than your dish washing water.

I would wash the floor in the greenhouse to, I’ll bet some felt off doing the cleaning. Are you not supposed to sorting dirt and plastic/pot etc in different containers? I mean, will it not just end of on a landfill? Or the dirt go to recycling to make city compost ? Then there will be plastic in it?! I was just wondering…

I hate your overwintering did not work. I'm in zone 8b and just tried leaving mine in the ground and mine are already growing and blooming like crazy. And yes I did get blasted by the December artic freeze. I did not cover them at all. Also no aphids at all.

You have to treat the soil where they grow. Mosquito bits sprinkled on the soil will help with that. I don’t put them water I just spread the bits on the soil and every time I water it treats the soil. Then spray the green house. Mosquito Bits is not harmful

Aphids were what discouraged me most last summer.. my first real summer gardening experience.. I had an army of ants on the peppers and after researching it was aphids that were attracting the ants.. I sprayed and it would be good for a couple of days but they’d come back. It was a struggle for sure! Janey I have a question for your master gardener mind… looking at photos from last year, our grape vine was FULL of leaves by now.. I finally noticed a few leaf buds just yesterday! Do you think that’s from the colder fall and winter we had? I was beginning to worry they weren’t coming back! I was so happy to finally see some sign of life!

Plant catmint or catnip I can’t remember which in the pots with your veggies. When I was younger I did this and my veggies never had any insects. It’s one of those two cat flowers, wish I could remember which. Want to say it was the catmint.

I have a question for everyone re the strong stream of water. When I do that in the garden, I always think… “Am I just spreading the aphids to the next plant?” Does the strong stream actually kill them or does it just knock them off for a later date?
@DigPlantWaterRepeat
@DigPlantWaterRepeat Год назад
I had the same question but just learned in master gardeners that no, you are actually killing them. They are sucking insects with sucking mouthparts in the leaves. When you knock them off you are actually ripping off their mouthpart (sorry to be graphic) which basically causes them to starve bc they can no longer eat! Crazy huh?

I even had the same brand new greenhouse as you but sadly it was destroyed before I even got to use it. Oh well, it’s the way things go sometimes. Kirsten
