At least Helen was already under the impression Daria is great just the way she is, she honestly got ANGRY that Daria might not see that. Weird reaction, but it shows how much Helen wants her daughters to love themselves, I guess
I always interpreted this as her inability to see her own mistakes. From what I've noticed, in most episodes, she's constantly being critical of Daria's personality and choices. In this scene, even though she SAYS that she praises Daria, in the very same sentence she exclaims "what's WRONG with you?!" She is completely oblivious to how her own treatment of her daughter could cause her to have low self esteem.

The definition of Narcissism is excessive interest in one’s self and admiration towards one’s self in physical appearance and lack empathy towards others. Helen wasn’t displaying any of that she was showing concern for Daria not herself . I hate how everyone in this generation claims someone is a narcissist or have narcissistic personality disorder when they don’t know what it fully means , or self diagnose people when only a psych evaluation can determine that .
"We tell you that you're amazing and you still are like this? What is wrong with you!?" Uhm, if Daria had low self esteem then that would be why. Parents shouldn't expect their child to feel good about themselves just because the parents tell the children that they are amazing. It's very nice and considerate but sometimes it ain't gonna do a thing.
When the only people that ever say nice things to you are the people who “owe” it to you in some way... when you can always tell people are only trying to be courteous or comforting.... yea that shows you a lot of things about how people really view you
Exactly. If Daria had depression or something, she may still feel down even if her family supports and encourages her. The support would certainly help her, but it wouldn’t cure the depression. Luckily for Daria, she just has low esteem for everyone else, which is common a teenager thing
my mom pretty much said that to me all the time growing up until I did have low self esteem for having low self esteem on top of the other reasons🥴 it was great, a real self fulfilling prophecy!
That's why she was such an interesting character: intellectually, she was extremely mature and above most people, but on a deep emotional level, she still was a 16 year old. 😅
Her mum is the careercentric female character trope that you'd start to see in shows in the late 80s early 90s, there's a handful of times that she does care about Daria, but for the most part she always put career ahead of family. Jake has issues with anything that affects his status quo of life to the extent that one of my favourite clips involves him instead of talking to Daria saying "Sounds like I should do something, I think I'll go clean the attic."
This was me in school and at work. Everyone told me that I needed to have more confidence and better self esteem, but it just made me feel awful because I had thought I was doing pretty well and felt good about myself

Ok from what I see is that Jake was just beginning to snap at Daria for what she was branded with as low self esteem before Helen steps in only to steal the sense of agency from him then next Quinn expresses her opinion on the subject in her own self-centered superficial way, which finally leads up to Daria responding effectively in her own words against the flawed peanut gallery that is her family…. …And the rest of the world
In my case he reminds me of an uncle I got to despise once I lived with him. He constantly complains about everything just like Jake does, and even the least, trivial stuff bothers him.
Today someone told me I sound like Daria and I have to admit that it’s true 😞 I’m off my meds so maybe that has to do with home monotone I can sound like sometimes lol
In retrospect, Daria is the villain. Everyone thinks the best, wants the best and legitimately wants to help her. Every single person in lawndale wants to love Daria, while Daria spends 300% of her time hating everyone else and loathing them. Never forget how she reacted when Charles finally got over her.
A lot of the people who "thinks the best, wants the best and legitimately wants to help her" are, in reality, thinking, wanting, and doing those things for selfish and/or misguided reasons(it makes them look good for helping her, they think how she is reflects badly on them and therfore try to change her, they try to force an extroverted life on her because they can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to be an extrovert, etc.). And there is nothing wrong with Daria. So Daria is right to ignore them and/or struggle against them. She's not a villain. She's a girl hounded by people insisting on giving her "help" she doesn't want. Hell, sometimes it isn't even people trying to help her. It's just people being assholes to her. Need I point out that this scene happened because a school psychiatrist was angry that Daria insulted her, even though the psychiatrist insulted Daria first. And Daria only had to take the test because Miss Li makes new students take it. Ostensibly it's because she wants to make sure the students are okay. Truthfully it's because she doesn't want "problem" students and wants to deal with them as quickly as possible, since they might make the school look bad.
@mikhailthegreatestdragon3627 That's why i said "The closest things to villains" Though they're not villains, they're pretty much the ones who the worst, like actively try to sabotage and ruin their friend for no reason whatsoever other than jealously and showing dominance. or forcing students to participate in things just to make her look good then doing off the wall shit like trying to make them sell candy to a obese diabetic, stealing and changing art from jane then trying to get her in trouble when she vandalized her own work because she wanted to back out of it, selling the school to a soda company for more money. and let's not forget hiring a PEDOPHILE and then chastising and making a daria (a teenager) become a teacher during a teacher's strike, just because her mom wanted to take legal action against the school. i know ms li isn't a villain but she's downright vile
As I try to objective with people. But when there just stupid and lack any common sense.. they get the stare..and kinda wakes up them from there stupid coma.. And I do generally have low esteem for everyone.

To be fair, it's a horrible feeling to have people tell you that you have low self esteem. You think you're doing pretty good and doing your best, then someone comes along and tells you that you're doing life wrong.
