This truck found a home today! If I remember correctly, when I ordered this truck I think trailer brake controllers were on restriction. I built it(and it’s twin that’s due any day) based on requirements for a local landscaping customer of ours. Fifth wheel is still in restriction and 4.10’s are on restrictions for gas engines currently 🙄

Great video, JB. That is a well spec'd truck for the money! I found out what plagues the 6.4, which might explain why most dealers do not stock a lot of Hemi 3500s. The camshaft sits too high within the block, which causes oil starvation issues w/ in the valvetrain at lower RPMs. As long as the owner drives the truck w/ very little idle time, no issues will develop. The 5.7 Hemi utilizes a different design, so oil starvation is not an issue. The BIG advantage of a gas powered 1-ton truck is GVWR and GAWR, as the gas set-up is just so much lighter than diesels. That what makes getting a 3/4 ton diesel does not make sense if one is in need of maximum GVWR... 1-ton diesel is the way to go.

The guy next door retired from Chrysler and he ordered a new half ton 2 wheel drive and with the Hemi don’t know what size it was and auto trans and 9 months later the motor locked or blew up and the dealer acted like it happens a lot. That’s crazy that a 9 month old truck with hemi shot it’s wad in only 9 months. He was fine and dealer said no big deal we will get you a brand new Hemi . Is it just me or what I would of told them to keep it I want a brand new truck not one with a blown motor !!!!!

I really enjoy your reviews, don't be surprised if big news, as in a seriously heavy duty gas engine, is in the works. Look up Cummins Fuel Agnostic series of engines. First engine, due to debut in 2024, is a GASOLINE powered 6.7L. These engines are going to be designed from the head gasket up for different fuels. 6.7L, 12 liter, and of course 15L that will run CNG / Helium / Gasoline etc. The fuels will not be interchangeable, what fuel it is designed for will be the only type it can run. Imagine the durability of that 6.7L bottom end, running gasoline. Being targeted to the medium duty and PICKUP TRUCK market, who else do you think might be the target buyer. You can find some info on RU-vid and in industry publications, like CCJ, Overdrive, etc. No official rumors RAM will get this engine, I'm just reading between the lines. The fleets are tired of emissions systems, Ford is Selling the hell out of 7.3L's, and if RAM does come out with this as I expect, they won't be able to build them fast enough.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 года назад
Thanks! I’ve heard Cummins was working on building something different from diesels. Hydrogen seems to be the ticket but Toyota wasn’t really able to get it off the ground as good as I thought they would. Still interesting to watch 👍🏾

Great review. Too bad Ram doesn't keep the 12,300lb GVWR that the diesel model has; I have basically the same 4000+LB payload on my Cummins 3500 SRW long bed. Still impressive payload but how nice would it bee to have a payload approaching 5000LB on a SRW! Great for truck camper use among other things.
@jayboogie7956
@jayboogie7956 2 года назад
My reason for not buying a long bed truck is because when you park in everyday parking spaces, it makes the truck wayyyyy more prone to get hit by passing drivers who don't pay attention. If people would drive with respect to others property, then I would get a long bed.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 года назад
I second this, even I stick out a bit which is why I park as far out as I can. I still have dents and dings on my truck for the few times I have parked close….

Nice video. That is definitely a long looking truck lol. Weird optioned too with no trailer brake controller. That shouldn’t even be an option though. Should be standard equipment with the towing package. I think 3500 SRW Rams are just hard to find in general. Last September/October when I was looking I don’t think I found the first one. That’s what I was wanting if I’d went Ram back then. Big Horn Sport, 3500 and Hemi. But at that time there was no Big Horn Sport, 2500 with the Hemi. Plenty with the Cummins though. The coil springs were a turn off to me for the 2500s and I knew the 3500 had leafs.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 года назад
Lol, it needs to be redesigned soon but I really don’t understand why you can’t find these trucks configured this way. Well I do know why but I think now that RAM is more reliable, it’s definitely a great option 👍🏾

@@JB_WhoWork I’ll be honest had I found even a 2500 red big horn sport I’d probably bought it in October. I think I would have regretted it considering my truck I had ordered ended up being built in November but I looked almost everyday what time my 1500 was waiting on parts. And I started calling dealers once I got it back to where I could actually trade it lol.

Honestly I would never buy a truck with hi gears if I can get lower as a option. Am glad the PW is standard with 4.10’s even if the gas mileage is worse as you can never have enough power. The 8 speed is awesome with the 6.4 and I went with the 4wd manual shifter. I got the 360 cameras and blind spot which are a must in my eyes. I wish the trx had 4.10’s since you are maxed out at 118 mph anyways(am sure they did it for gas mileage and made up for it in the transmission). I was going to regear my powerwagon for 35’s or 37’s but I decided just to leave the 4.10’s as it’s fast enough even when I go to 35’s or 37’s do to the 8 speed. The 31/33 gallon tank is a joke BUT on the other hand if they put a bigger tank less payload. I hate Uconnect 5 as it does crazy things like not the screen doesn’t come on, freezes,etc and yes even with the latest update. Uconnect 4 is better until they fix all the bugs in unconnect 5. I do like the options better on uconnect 5 better though
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 года назад
The 4.10 gears is definitely the way to go on these gas powered rigs, I wish they offered a 4.30 but I’m sure they have their reason as to why 4.10’s is enough. Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
@dieselmutt8865

It's been my experience that the Hemi rides better than the diesel. The diesel needs a lot stiffer springs in the front end to support the extra weight and makes for a harsher ride.

I have the budget of 50K that the bank is willing to give me and Ive taken a liking to the Dodge Rams. Would a Dodge Ram 3500 ....Hemi... work for pulling a dump trailer in Texas (flat land) ? I believe the trailer is 16ft 5,000 lbs and can hold 10,000k. Im just trying not to make the wrong choice so your professional opinion would be very appreciated. I hope I haven't intruded and inconvenienced you to much, thank you for your time and have a blessed day. Desmond Vick

This is the kind of truck I want to buy. It's fairly priced and can work. For those of us who don't pull construction equipment or heavy trailers daily for our jobs, why pay the extra for the diesel, the higher payment, higher maintenance costs, and have to deal with DEF, glow plugs/cold starts, etc? For the guys who pull a camper on the weekends with the family, or the boat to the lake on the weekends, but need more than a 1/2 ton can pull, this is a great option. The only downside is finding these pre-owned within a few years, they all seem to have worn seats and well over 100K. My guess is a lot of guys lease these for hot shot trucking and trade them in every few years. I would consider buying a brand new one, keep it for 10 years or more as long as it's not costing an arm and a leg in maintenance and then you know it won't be beat to hell. The cost on this is lower than some of the 1/2 tons and this can actually pull a fifth wheel camper or a gooseneck. To me it has all the options I need such as AC, power windows and locks, and a backup camera which helps for lining up a trailer to the hitch ball by yourself. Some of us don't need a $90k truck with heated leather massage seats, we just need a truck to carry the family and pull the camper on the family road trip and haul stuff home from Home Depot. This would also be good for someone with a landscaping or handyman business who pulls an enclosed trailer but nothing super heavy. The money you save on not buying the diesel up front or paying for more expensive fuel will easily pay for a lot of gasoline over the years.

Apparently, it had dropped a valve (a known issue for the 5.3L) and the guy that owned it just drug it over by the barn with his tractor and that's where it stayed until I came along. The valve seriously gouged the sidewalls of the block (repairable) but I decided to get another motor to rebuild instead. Finally got all the parts together, now just trying to get the time to get started on it, lol!

Nice truck! It has many features my SLT doesn't have. The lower console space by the floor (where you mentioned you could put your wallet) - the right side fits a standard-size tissue box perfectly! My truck was originally advertised as a 6.4L 1-ton, and was pretty excited to purchase... until I drove 1.5 hours to the dealer and saw it in person - it was only a 3/4 ton. I still bought it anyways because it was such a great deal, but always wished it had the extra payload to open up more trailering options. Crazy that this didn't come with an integrated trailer brake controller.

I was talked into a 6.4 Hemi 2500, told me these motors compete with the Cummins, and that’s a lie! 6.4 Hemi has about 400 ft torque, where the Cummins is (pending year) around 900 ft torque, much better for towing!

The 6.4L/4.10 rear is still good. I towed 10k up 5% grade with Cummins/HEMI and both got the job done. The diesel did it better but where the diesel shines is the exhaust brake 👍🏾

I have a Ram 2500 Bighorn with the 6.4 Hemi. I chose it over the Cummins for a couple of major reasons. 1.) The low payload rating of the 2500 with the Cummins is way too restrictive, and 2.) Much cheaper to own and operate daily, no DEF, much cheaper fuel, and cheaper maintenance overall. By the time you factor in the additional up front cost of the Cummins engine, DEF, more expensive oil changes, fuel filters, more expensive fuel, it takes a really long time to break even with the marginal increase in fuel economy a diesel gives you. For a guy like me that uses the truck mostly as a daily driver and only tows my 31' travel trailer 8-10 times per year, the Hemi was the best option.

I have a 2022 3500 with the Ram Air Suspension. Problem on a 3500, it has to be loaded with a bit of weight on the truck before the air suspension becomes useful. Versus, in the 2500 with just the coil suspension, it can effect the bed height without it being loaded. The 3500 leaf springs just effect the load before the air suspension does. If all of that makes sense?

I like the RAM trucks but two things would have to change for me to buy one: 1) Back row middle seat is too short - I have a family of 6 so that middle seat needs to be full length (like the Ford and GM) without spec'ing the Mega Cab 2) Up here in Ontario I won't buy a truck with steel side fenders(rust). @HalfShell I agree, but if you don’t want expensive maintenance, you shouldn’t buy a Ram with a gas engine. People only buy Rams for the Cummins, they just happen to come delivered in a Ram package. I’d argue that if you wanted a HD gas truck, a Ford with the 7.3 Godzilla engine is the far superior option.

@@f5tornadeau I've been driving diesel trucks for over 35yrs. In that time I've owned multiple diesel pickups. I also drive a semi across country every week for work, so I know a little about diesels. There isn't a gas truck out there, that's going to out tow a diesel for regular, daily heavy duty use. If you're towing a trailer that weights over 10k everyday or every week or if you are driving a lot of miles everyday, then it makes sense to buy a diesel, for the better milage and longevity. I bought a 2020 2500 6.4, CC,LB, 4X4,4.10, 50 gal tank, fifth wheel package. I don't tow regularly , and my trailer weights under 11k. I didn't buy a new diesel because I wouldn't utilize it for the extra cost associated with owning a diesel, and I love the way the Hemi drives. I also like the extra payload.

We have a couple Rams in our fleet that do service work near and literally on the beaches here in CA. I won't go into too much detail, but they primarily handle chemicals, sand bangs, and they are constantly covered in sea mist and sand, and we've never done any type of rust protection, we just make sure they cleaned regularly. There's virtually no rust on the body and frames after 10 years of service. That wasn't true for our Fords and Chevys.
