So many people ask what was it like when this album came out? What did we think of it? What is the correct way of listening to the Darkside of the moon. Imagine you are 16, you live in a world where the height of technology is that colour TV’s are just beginning to be made, but no one can afford to buy one. Computers do not exist or any computer games, or knowledge of them. A mobile phone cannot be imagined, even the thought of a calculator stretches your mind. Your knowledge of life is all that you have read and the people you have met. Even being a teenager is a new concept. Your mind is open to the World and Universe but so few ways exist to see it clearly, and so many things try to stop you even looking. You fall back into a bean bag and roll a joint. As you relax within the cloud of aromatic smoke you unwrap the latest album you had just bought “Dark side of the moon”. It’s just come out; you have heard of the album but never heard it. There is no way of hearing it unless you buy it. You place the album on the record player, put your headphones on, close your eyes and allow every note and word into your mind. When the record finishes, you wipe the tears away, walk up to your window and stare at the moon. You take a deep breath, Welcome to the new World…so many things that you, the now teenager of the 21st century, value, enjoy or live for, have over the decades been conceived, invented, and created by those that have listened to this and many albums like this before you. So, what will you create? Don’t let 10 years get behind you!

The only thing better than Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd live. Their Pulse concert is one of the greatest concerts of all time and they start it with the entirety of Dark Side of the Moon. The Great Gig in the Sky in particular is just unbelievably beautiful. Where Clare Torry was raw and wild, the ladies of Pulse have polished it up to a brilliant shine. I've watched it countless times and still can't get through it without crying. That's a tenor sax on Us and Them. The very small saxophones are sopranos. For a sax solo that'll melt your face off give Dogs of War from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert a listen. 🤘🏽💗

It's great that you are introducing your friend to Floyd, well done! Might I suggest you allow him to relax, close his eyes and listen, with no talking. Allow the music to take him where ever it does. You might then talk about specific tracks at the end.

And the lyrics ! Pink Floyd, more over those albums, have important and beautiful lyrics, talking make them miss the full experience with the "poetry".

Welcome to Pink Floyd. The album can also be played in a loop. It ends exactly where it the begins. I also believe that to make the cash register sounds at the beginning of the song money, they hand spliced multi track tape into a loop. Partially dismantled the studio recorder and looped around a microphone stand.

Clare Torry took the band to court some years ago, won and was given song writing credits for The Gig in the Sky and won an undisclosed sum. Bet there were a few zeros in the number.

That's a tenor sax on the track "Us and them". Also, the straight sax you were thinking of is a soprano sax. All other saxes have the curved shape.

I'm 63 now, but imagine being 16 and sitting in your friends basement with shag carpeting, wood paneled walks, wearing bell bottoms and concert t shirts listening to this record while passing a joint around and getting a bit high. Yeah. That was how I first heard it in the mid-1970s. But my reaction then was almost like yours 50 years later.

Pink Floyd is all natural born talent. They are Originals and theres only one original. We were somehow blessed to grow up with their songs in the air. Forever remembered by Gen X.

Joe I'd like to apologise for your first experience of Pink Floyd is being the DSOTM through earbuds!!! This album MUST be listened to through a huge quadraphonic stereo system on ¾ volume or greater!!!!!! Preferably with the lights dimmed down to 5%, and bottle of whiskey, red wine or other close at hand, and perhaps even some magic mushrooms partaken before hand!!! Still I guess you can go back and do all that now, but it won't be the same as the first time...again...my apologies for not having led you into this rabbit hole correctly!!!

You mentioned how Pink Floyd's music further portrays what the lyrics are saying, and that's one of my favorite things about PF. I love how the music in Pigs sounds like pigs and how the guitar in Sheep sounds like hacking and slicing blades. In Shine On You Crazy Diamond the music in several places sounds like what light twinkling and surging through a faceted diamond looks like. Echoes sounds like it's under water in many places. One of My Turns brilliantly portrays a manic episode...I could go on... 😆🤘🏽💗

Earbuds? Good grief. How do you feel the bass through your ears rather than your lungs? Try Parsons' quad or Guthrie's 5.1 mixes on a proper audio system so the music envelopes the entire room with you in the sweet spot. And if the neighbours complain about the noise, rest assured the cops will arrest them instead.

One thing I think everyone should know about Great Gig in the Sky, is they had an audition for a female to create vocals on this track. This woman was the first to audition, and did this performance, free style. When she was done, embarrassed she apologized to them, not sure that that is what they wanted. They told her it was perfect and , kept the first performance just as she auditioned it.

It is of course your channel and you can conduct it as you see fit. However, I'd like to point out that no human being can effectively listen and talk at the same time! Would you meet a friend for drinks and attempt to talk over their dialogue? Could you listen to their argument or story whilst blabbering? No! Think about that for your channel format. Doesn't matter if it's Pink Floyd or not, the principle is the same no matter what you are attempting to listen to, and then comment upon. That you did it with one of the highest selling albums of all time, with deep visceral and timeless lyrics (which your subject completely missed), in addition to incredible soundscapes is of course a travesty, but it would still be a travesty for even the most mundane and untalented music also.

Too much talking, not enough listening.
@flubblert
@flubblert Месяц назад
Wow guys, I know you were excited about showing your bud this masterpiece but chatting over the entire thing, you missed sooo much. Lots of the chatter could have been done at strategic pauses or after the album. The lyrics in this album are some of the most profound in Rock. I doubt that you caught any of it. Also that is a saxophone. Dick Parry (not a member) on sax 🎷. Not your fault that you cannot distinguish between a saxophone and a flute which is so completely different in sound. It is the tragic result of growing up in a digital age where real instruments tate a back seat to computerizations and mindless beats. Also, yes Paul McCartney was one of the interviews, but they decided not to use him as it might have distracted too much from the album. His voice is not included on it. One last thing… Clare Torry was paid around $35 for her part. Same as any other studio session vocalist. Not sure where you got the $20,000 figure from. She finally sued in the early 2000s and won a settlement out of court believed to be in the millions. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it. Now do it again where you just sit and listen and let the Sonic and lyrical experience wash over you. The way it was meant to be heard. ✌️

Of course it’s better to listen to it without talking, and you’re more than welcome to do that anytime you want. This channel is for discussing music. Sorry we don’t know every instrument!

@@iamdondawson Ha, kinda like you I was 17 when this album was released in 1973 and I started to really take notice. Suffice to say I've heard it roughly about 100,000 times since then. I've seen them perform it live twice. Trust me, I was not here to hear the album again…that's ludicrous. I was here to get you and your friend’s legitimate reaction. A reaction I don't think could be fully realized if you're not actually listening to the album. As I stated, strategic pauses and or waiting till after the session for your comments would have been more appropriate. But I do appreciate his comments even though he missed out on the lyrics which to me is half the show, and other important nuances. And no need to apologize for the saxophone thing. As I said, totally not your fault. It's just the era we live in with it's emphasis on digital synthetic music over real music played with actual instruments.
