Speaking from experience, I think it’s the fact that going to college and getting a degree is pushed so much in HS. And they sometimes shame you for not doing so. There are plenty talented folks out there who are wasting their time in college. They should also keep in mind that their “dream career” might start off as a side hustle, whilst they work a job to put food on the table etc

Or you can join the military and get the piece of paper for free. That's what I did. Graduated not only debt free but with a nest egg and have a good job. If someone really wants to go to college and not have to take loans to do it, options are available. You learn to be proficient in your field in the workforce, not in a classroom, but I assure you that in many professions that piece of paper is very important to get your foot in the door. Application gets thrown in the garbage without it. Wouldn't be where I am without mine.

If the job you want to get with your degree doesn't clear any debt you aquire in school in less than five years, its automatically not worth it.

exactly. I'll only push my kids to get a degree if they wanna go into the medical, law, engineering or math/finance field. I unfortunately have African parents who forced me to go to college. Only way I wasn't going to college is if I had a successful business turning over like 100k a year. And even then they'd probably tell me to get a degree "just in case". I didn't have anyone to tell me why I shouldn't go to college. My parents are in Mexico and it was the only thing my counselors said I do without having to continue working in agriculture. I got a communications degree but have not been able to get any gigs in Public relations. Currently work for a call center, but on the weekends I have been working as a photographer and booking clients on the weekend. It took me a long time to finally get clients paying for sessions. What worked for me was also working with local businesses and providing social media marketing for their companies. I work with a Taqueria providing drone videos and pictures of their monthly specials as well as food photography. It's been almost a year and this is one way I am adding value to myself with my degree so when I land a job as a social media marketer or photographer I have some experience to help me add to my resume. You can do this, it's gonna take a lot of work but its possible.

I say never go to college for a degree in the creative field. If you are talented you will make it without a degree in anything creative. Unlike being a teacher for instance where you won’t make a return on the college investment but its required for the job- you don’t need a degree to be creative or get a job (art, photography, film, etc).
