I love older radio equipment ... anything from the 1930s to the 1990s . I have a couple of newer radios as well , but I prefer the older stuff .

Very cool TwistedKat !! Your IC-751a is almost a twin to my Yaesu FT-757GX II . One of my local friends recently got a Kenwood TS-140s setup , just about the same time I got my Yaesu , and it looks a lot like your Icom and my Yaesu . I guess that's how they were all making them look at that time period ... lol

Nice find . Pretty simple. I barely know how to run my FT-950 . Ever since I bought it I’ve been working long hours and on my days off I’ve been catching up on other projects . I need to sit down and just read the manual and play with the radio . I sure miss older , more simple radios

Dallas , that's why I prefer older radios to the newer ones . Because older radios are "Plug 'n Play" . They sound good , simple to run and don't have a ton of menus in them . I've had my Yaesu FT-897D for about 6 - 8 years , and I still don't know everything it can do ... and I've had this Yaesu FT-757GX II for a couple of weeks and got it completely figured out already .

One of my local friends just bought a Kenwood TS-140s about the same time I got this Yaesu , and ironically enough ... both radios were made the same year . By the way , his ts-140s is the best radio I've heard him using in a long time . I also have a Yaesu FT-897D that I use for HF too .

Nice little radio, one of the last non computerized radios. I have a Kenwood TH-215 2 meter HT that I bought in the late '80s. So simple to operate. It only has maybe 10-12 memory channels. My Yaesu FT-60 HT and FT-2900R 2 meter mobile radios have thousands of memory channels, and there is several times as much information you need to program into each one. It's so complicated you need a programming cable so you can connect a computer to program them. And despite all that garbage, they cost about one forth as much as the Kenwood did back in the late 80s. I've had to replace the memory battery in the Kenwood several times. I wish they still made radios like that, but without the memory battery. I have several radios with the speaker on top, and that is a big problem for me. I live near Phoenix, AZ, and it is super dusty here. If I don't keep something dustproof over the speaker when not using it, it will literally fill up with dust to the point where it no longer works. I have an HF radio that has continuous receive from 30Khz to 54Mhz. AM/SSB. No FM though. I was just listening to radio New Zealand on 11725 last night.

I really like this Yaesu , and the audio reports that I've been getting with it since I added my 40 year old (maybe older) D104 gray base , are great . I have an old Kenwood TW-4000a dual band 2m/440 radio that I like to use . I just recently changed the memory battery in that radio as well . I don't need (or want) a ton of menus in my radios . I prefer to just get an older radio that you just turn on , an start talking . No menus for me if I can avoid it ... lol .

Rice radio! I've got an older kenwood that I really enjoy. Sure it doesn't have the bells and whistles that my 7300 has but that's why I like it. Nice score. Great video!

@@cujo229 Very good radio ... I have quite a few Yaesu radios around the shack , which I only just realized a day or two ago ... lol . I've been checking out the FT-991a myself . It's definitely a shack in the box .... which is a feature the IC-7300 lacks , since it's for HF only . At least if you don't get your General's license yet you can still use the FT-991a for 2 meter & 440 ... which again , you can't do with the IC-7300 . Personally , I think the 991a is a good choice .

How can I go about finding one of these radios that work? No to eBay! Do they need to see a tech right away. TNX 73's
@RaccoonsRadioRanch
@RaccoonsRadioRanch 2 года назад
You can check out either QTH.com or QRZ.com . That's Ham operators selling their equipment to each other . Both are good places to shop for used Ham radio equipment without going to ebay . Since it's a 35 year old radio , there's a possibility that it might need it's electrolytic capacitors replaced ... or you may get lucky and they've already been done , or they're still good .

I have bought 2 ham radio off of eBay with no problems. I bought them from other actual active hams not estate,storage locker or flea market finds that are being sold . Though I'm thinking about buy a new in the box RCI 2950 that someone found in a storage locker auction .I'm trying to get them to at least try to power it on so that's not a dead radio. But it appears to be brand new in the box never used. I may take a chance.

I repair and collect tube radios from the 20s to the 60s, I bought a heathkit HW-32 recently that I am trying to get going. My question is probably a dumb one but here goes. Why on tranceivers do the voices you are listening to sound so weird, kinda distorted and warbly? Does it have something to do with the frequency that it is transmitted at? I is hard to understand what someone is saying so I guess there is nothing to be done in the circuit to correct it or else someone would have done it. I would like to get a better radio like yours and get my ham license someday. What are some beginner models that might be priced reasonably ,preferably tube so I can work on it if it breaks.
@RaccoonsRadioRanch
@RaccoonsRadioRanch 2 года назад
Hey there Skull , the majority of my equipment is tube or solidstate , I love the older equipment . I have a couple radios that are newer . But I prefer the older stuff . If you're noticing a warble when you're going from tube equipment to anything that's solidstate or newer . I'd have to say that it's the difference between vacuum tubes and transistors ... I believe that performance wise , vacuum tube technology is superior to anything transistorized ... and I also consider solidstate to be superior to the newer surface mount equipment . If you're looking for reasonably priced vacuum tube Ham radios ... then I would recommend something made by Heathkit , Swan , or maybe Drake . They're all good tube radios that can be found online (or in your area) at a reasonable price . If you want something a little newer like the Yaesu in this video ... then I'd recommend looking for something made in the 1980s by companies like Yaesu , Icom or Kenwood . In fact Kenwood made a few vacuum tube/solidstate hybrid models in the 1980s that you might want to look for . Look for Trio/Kenwood and model numbers like TS-530s or the TS-830s . You'd probably like those , they're the best of both worlds . Thanks for watching the video , and for your comment & question .

@@RaccoonsRadioRanch Thank you for your reply. But what I meant was when you listen to AM, FM or shortwave peoples voices sound pretty much like you are in the room with them. When I listen to people talking on a ham radio like in your video , other peoples videos as well as on my heathkit 20 meter the voices sound distorted, almost like a synthesizer or something, kinda warbly or nasally. I was wondering why this happens is it because of the frequency they are conversing at?
@RaccoonsRadioRanch
@RaccoonsRadioRanch 2 года назад
@@skullheadwater9839 I'm not 100% sure as to why ... but it might have to do with the frequency they're on , or maybe it comes from recording an analog audio ... and then transferring it to a digital format .
@joewoodchuck3824
@joewoodchuck3824 2 года назад
@@skullheadwater9839 Most hams use single side and (SSB) on HF. Might want to check your mode settings. Listen to an established ham net and see if you can tune to the published frequency for sound quality.

@@RaccoonsRadioRanch on my all tube analog Heathkit the vocals sound just like your radio.
