It took killing 2 separate Vega GPU's to understand what I was doing wrong. Please watch this video if you own and AMD GPU with HBM2 Ram onboard!!!!

Have you had any terrifying stories of repasting GPU's?

There is an Asus GTX 680 of my sister that was on its last legs and had system instabilities under Windows. It was my first time trying liquid metal thermal paste for a repaste, but I was not careful enough with it and ended up spilling on the board. I was impatient, and used too much force on the tube trying to get the liquid metal out of it, potentially shorting components on the board. Thankfully I had a spare GPU I put in her system as backup, and we had given up on her older card anyway.

Thank you so much for this video! It showed up when i was searching for a (gigabyte) vega 56 disassembly since i want to repaste it and replace its thermal pads. Your insight has helped me be cautious over flip-chip microprocessor packages. I had no idea that the substrate can be exposed, and just like you i was planning on cleaning off all thermal paste. Thanks again so much. You're potentially saving my card this way!

Really glad I've come across this video. I've repasted my Vega 64 a few times already and so far, have dodged a bullet. Never knew this is how they mounted the GPU on this card. I do have MSI built one so I guess that helped.

Thank you for the informative video. I didn't know about the possible exposed interposer.

Very sorry to hear ! But to me you did everything right. I personally also like to clean the whole GPU die of the old paste and I would use a Q-tip soaked in 99% alcohol. From what I have seen only the 56 have the exposed interposer while the 64 have the protective glue. Maybe just bad luck ? 😬

I do the same Q-tip and alcohol, I never dmg any of them. 1 of my 5 vega 64s interposer is exposed. Still usuful info though didn't knew I could kill it like this xD

Thank you! I'm building 8 vega rig on waterblocks. With this new info no way I'm touching that underchip thing, will leave the old paste around the chips.

Is it safe to put kapton tape over the interposer? I'm thinking of repasting an MI 50 32gb (that's like a datacenter version of a Radeon VII) but instead of paste, those use graphite pads that are conductive. Now because the pads are conductive they probably potted the chip, but just in case they didn't I was wondering.

The core and the HBM are also uneven on these GPUs. The HBM is slightly lower, make sure to put more thermal paste on lower portion.
@jonathankelt1938
@jonathankelt1938 Месяц назад
As you have so much experience with this GPU, maybe you can answer me a question: Is ok to "repaste" the Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse with normal thermal paste? Somewhere I read, you have to use a thermal pad because the CPU die and the two HBM dies are not 100% equal leval. Greez Jo

@blackmennewstyle
@blackmennewstyle 2 года назад
Since VEGA 54 & 64 share HBM2 VRAM just like the Radeon VII, does it also apply to the Radeon VII? Why are you using a metallic object instead of Q-tip with alcohol anyway for removing the old paste in the corners? Asking for troubles in first place lol Have a great weekend and keep on mining

The interposer is fragile enough to be damaged even by a Q-tip. It's exposed silicon circuitry which is extremely fragile.
@yanagida_01
@yanagida_01 8 месяцев назад
goddamn they really left the interposer exposed like that?! it's as if they want it to be disposable after one repaste😂 it's a good thing I found this video first! I found a seller on a whack ton of MSI Air Boost Vega 56's for like $80, they'll also sell it for $60 if you buy wholesale. let's hope these MSI models have the epoxy on the interposer.

It really depends where it got damaged an how much. Some won't turn on, some will artifact like crazy and others will idle just fine but crash under, like, 5% load.

Unfortunately, I recently scratched this core, but it was the mirror on top that was scratched. To be more precise, it was a crack of less than 1mm.

I would very likely go around with metal tweezers to clean all those gaps, would destroy it as well for sure. Usually delicate stuff like that is potted, very poor of AMD not to do that themselves.

Well, I found this video about 12 hours too late. It's a Red Devil 64 that just started misbehaving, first teardown. It started the moment I was considering looking into a new build. The 7xxx aren't playing nice in VR, Nvidia are rather full of themselves at the moment, but the community updated drivers for my Nitro Fury have it performing better than Vega for most of the last year

if it is working do not fix it.. mine has a real good air flow.. memory 71c and gpu 70c at most . always on saver mode. 2560x1080p aiming 75hz. optimizing if not possible always above 60fps. do not play online. i know the air flow is great cause when i stop a game like watch dogs legions. 1 minitue is enough for the temps go lower than 50c. but man great information. no touch pads. nice. i really had no ideia it is like that . mine is a sapphire vega 56. tnx keep the good work

Dude, there's a good chance I owe you 600 bucks. I have a Vega 56 waiting in line to be repasted and I would have gone to town with an alcohol wipe on that old paste. Now I'm going to put bigger fans on instead, and not dare to ever touch the die.
@ramushsteinuts9318
@ramushsteinuts9318 2 года назад
leave your case full open or at leas to top cover full open .. i put a exaust fan right over it. i did not made any difference. hot air goes up so . . top cover completely out. with 2 or 3 fans on top is more than enough. if i could i would have posted a picture of my case. lol. fully open is not a good ideia, without any dust filter gets filthy very easily.

You could have used a toothbrush with alcohol. It wouldn't damage the interposer.
@Roxor.Z
@Roxor.Z 2 года назад
i know it's an old comment, but he said that he used a paper towel, a toothbrush is even harder so it's better to just remove the thermal paste from only the reflective part of the die
