Yeah, probably not. There's too many people that can't even speak American English properly, much less attempt to speak ASL. Besides, requiring everyone to follow the same educational platform is the problem with our education system, so that would just put another hole in the education of the future generations.

People seem to be hating on her because, according to them, “she’s not doing anything special”... For me it just seems like they’re trying to find fault where there is none. She never once in this video said she was doing anything heroic or extremely difficult, nor is she ignoring other languages. What does call my attention, though, is how healthy and intelligent her baby looks. This, my friends, deserves applause.

Hi I was born with one working ear because I'm profoundly deaf in my right ear. Its great you are learning ASL for your child and that you can teach him while he is young. My mom wasn't surrounded by people who could help her learn ASL and she never took the time to learn. As I got older I realized I need to learn ASL because of being half deaf to interact with both hearing and deaf world. I am proud that you are doing this for your child.😄

I don't get this at all though, I was born deaf in my left ear but ive always heard fine I just have to tell people to walk on my right side and not hearing well when people talk on my right side, doesn't mean I'm deaf and have a need for sign language
@rach_laze
@rach_laze 6 лет назад
andrea abdilla everyone has different experiences, you might be fine but in others it can cause auditory processing issues (which is the reason I had to learn sse in school) and speech delays/problems that mean it's hard to understand, I know loads of people with things like ms and cerebral palsy that use different forms of sign language or sse to make sure they can have a coherent 2 way conversation, I'm not even slightly deaf but I do have apd and struggle to understand spoken words especially when tired but can manage sign, I also go through periods of time where my vocal chords became partially paralysed and as a teacher I still need to be able to communicate effectively

DrewR420 They never said it was the absolute best, just one of them. Especially because when communicating with deaf people, it’s important not to be super dependent on writing and reading lips, although writing is a lot better than lip reading. Lip reading is extremely difficult, especially since a lot of people can speak very differently, and sign language is not exactly the same as spoken language, in concepts or in syntax. So if a deaf person isn’t lucky enough to get an education that thoroughly teaches them the majority spoken language as well as the sign language of the region they’re living in, there can be a lot of written words that deaf people just don’t know or sentences they can have trouble understanding. Taking the time to learn sign language is incredibly helpful to Deaf and deaf people, so if you live in a big city or a town with a significant deaf population, just knowing at least some of it can guarantee not getting stuck in a situation where you get frustrated with a person who can’t hear you because you can’t communicate.

I love this. I’m a pediatric audiologist and I use a total communication approach in my practice. I give parents a wide range of information anything from ASL to a CI and let them choose what they believe is best for their child and then support them 100% in that choice. Obviously if a parent is unsure or has questions for what I think is best I walk them through every option and make sure they are well informed and are comfortable making a decision. I also always promote ASL because it is proven to help speech and language in even normal hearing babies.

As a future audiologist, your story makes me incredibly happy. So many parents of deaf children are hearing and want their child to be hearing as well (which is fine, amplification is a wonderful option for those who suit it). There are so many options, no one worse or better than the other. It’s amazing that you embrace your sons deafness and recognize that it’s possible for him to be a part of both the hearing and deaf worlds. What’s even more amazing to me is that you as a parent are willing to teach yourself an entirely new language just for the purpose of communicating with your son. Truly a beautiful story and I wish you the best of luck in continuing to learn ASL.

My friend has partial hearing loss in one ear and even with that she often has trouble hearing things, like at lectures, in noisy environments and sometimes if we're just standing on the left side. We often have to touch her to get her attention, but once she knows she should listen to you, she understands fine. Though she does say that she looks at lips a lot so she doesn't miss anything. I think it's amazing that this mom is learning ASL for her son. I'm sure she'll do anything for him to have an amazing life. Also, he's as cute as a button!

I'm the same. Deaf in my right ear. I'm proud of you guys as parents for picking up ASL to help him out. I'm usually okay inside of buildings but the way sound travels outside makes every day things very difficult. I'm 23 years old right now, was tested recently. My deaf ear CAN pick up sounds ( I could pick up very low decibels according to the test), but I honestly don't notice it. You guys are good parents. Good luck and I wish the best for your son!

I was an American Sign Language interpreting student and this video makes me so happy! I will never ever try to speak on behalf of the Deaf community, but I know a constant struggle is parents not willing to learn the language that may be easiest for their child to understand. And then sometimes they do learn, but it’s simple and not real communication. I honestly started watching this video thinking it would be along the same lines of “doing this to make a video for the internet” , and wow!! You’re doing amazing!! The fact you understand it’s not just English, and an actual language...and having a tutor...you’re amazing and I admire you. Thank you for being an amazing Mother and understanding that a hearing aid is not always the solution, that he can be a completely healthy functioning person without someone trying to sell you a quick and “easy” solution. He’s a beautiful boy, and it’s a beautiful language and culture, and I wish you all the best in learning all about it.

Yes! This is a vital message. As an ASL interpreting student, I have seen several times unfortunately where parents can't communicate with their own children. Which means you'll never know how they feel, what they want, how their days went, etc. Later on in life those kids might resent their parents for ignoring them. Keep it up!

I am someone who also grew up with unilateral hearing where I'm fully deaf in my left ear. My parents were always supportive in whatever I needed; giving me hearing aids as a child (which I quickly hated and didn't use after a month), making sure I was sitting on the side of the classroom that allowed me to hear the teacher better, and even in university, I wanted to take a language course (choosing between French and ASL) and my parents pushed me to learn ASL because of my hearing. They even went as far as strongly supporting me getting a cochlear implant where I eventually refused. It makes me very happy you were so quick willing to learn a complete new language for your son and being super supportive! Keep up the great work!

(All of them, and many other deaf friends as well, have preferred SE to ASL, but I've also learned a lot of ASL.) I've never taken a sign language class of any kind but I'm entirely fluent in SE & quite comfortable in ASL. I've even taught advanced classes in it! This is all to say that you can do it too. I’m currently studying child care and British sign language in Scotland with the hopes to help deaf children and their families. This such a beautiful and important video on why people should learn sign language... it’s a beautiful language to learn. Luckily back in the UK they’ve recently put a ‘national plan’ in place to try and make sign language accessible in various places for a deaf persons day to day life which will make them feel more included in society. Well done Ali for taking the time and putting in such an effort to learn ASL (some parents don’t!) 🙌🏻

I hope your son does well as he grows up. As someone who has had problems with their left ear for years, I can say that I’ve had bad experiences with ENTs as well. We had to go through seven different doctors until we finally got referred to a professional who could preform the surgery that I needed. For several years, I would constantly feel awful because my hearing loss caused me to say ”what” so many times in conversations (people would get frustrated and I would be too nervous to explain my condition, even my family getting fed up with me at points). I also could not submerge myself in water, so bathing or trying to go to a birthday that involves swimming was hard (I would usually just sit at the edge, and I think my ear is one of the reasons I am so uncomfortable in water), especially because in California, these things are common. Through surgeries and office procedures, though painful and anxiety inducing, I have actually retained more hearing than I would have without. Which I am grateful for. Don’t let your son’s hearing affect his quality of life, I’m sure he will grow up happy and loved.

Please everyone try to learn more about the spectrum of deafness and deaf culture in general. It’s a really amazing community! I am a CODA (child of deaf adult) and as I got older I wanted more and more of deaf culture because it is quite amazing! I love my identity and love learning more about my culture. No I’m not deaf or hard of hearing but I can be a part of the community. I love finding an immediate connection with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing or even someone who just knows the language. When my family goes out to a restaurant for example and when a waiter sees us signing and comes and just says, “Hello!” I can’t help but smile along with my family. As much as I know I should speak for deaf people I know for a fact that they just want to treated like humans and have a friendly conversation. So sorry for this long jumbled rant thing XD! Thank you so much for listening to what I said even if it didn’t make any sense

I learned a little sign language to communicate with my toddler nephew. He couldn't speak well at the time. His daycare teaches basic ASL to its toddlers. It really helps break some language barrier with your child.

I'm completely deaf in my left ear, and I'm 20 years old. I only found out I was deaf when I was 4 years old, so I went pretty much my entire pre-elementary years not knowing I was deaf. I now have a BAHA, that I got at 17. I have so much love for this little nugget

I wish buzzfeed didn’t have to make a video for people to realize that everyone deserves communication access! This should be the norm!

I think this is so wonderful that she is learning ASL for her son. It is an extremely useful language to learn for various reasons, and will strengthen his language learning as he grows. I am also curious whether or not she will get a hearing aid for the ear with the profound hearing loss as well to aid in his overall auditory perception.

I am mostly deaf in one ear, I wasn't born with it but I have had many times where my hearing improves and then a few years later, I need another surgery to improve it again. Over the years, I never learnt sign language but I have grown up relying on a bit of lip reading as I often have to look at someone to know what they are saying. I am due for ANOTHER surgery but it is meant to fix my hearing PERMANENTLY. My lip reading is self taught and I need it ESPECIALLY when someone is on the left side of me as it is my left ear that is mostly deaf. I hope one day, my hearing PERMANENTLY will me fixed but just in case, I may learn sign language, I am a quick learner and in less than a month, I was able to learn a whole song in sing language for a school play/show. I hope all goes well for this boy and he can adapt to the hearing loss like I did❤❤❤

I like how they made this video as if she CHOSE to learn it to be an amazing person. No, sweetheart, you're learning it because you want to communicate properly with your son, aka you HAVE to.

I have completed online ASL classes but retention is difficult since it doesn't come up much day to day. I don't have anyone in my family who is deaf, I just thought it was interesting and decided to take classes. It's come up a few times and even with my minimal knowledge it is handy because at the very least, I can spell things.

There are “three types” of Sign Language used here. SEE- Signed exact English. So you would sign every word! Including “an.” PSE- pidgin signed English. ASL signs with English grammar. ASL- ASL signs and ASL grammar.
