My son was delayed in speech so i started teaching him basic signs around your baby's age. It took more than a week but he learned please and thank you. More. Eat. Drink. Play. Ball. Cookie. Milk. Mom and dad. It was his primary way to communicate until he began to speak at three. He was a lot less stressed. More happy. You just have to be consistent. As you speak you sign. Also shows with baby signs will help.

Our son was also speech delayed and teaching him signs was invaluable. He’s 13 now but we still recommend it to friends who have babies. I think any parent and child can benefit.

Only a week? Sign language is like any other language, especially if you're trying to teach it to a child. Needs to be ingrained throughout all of their childhood.

Actually those were real signs used in American Sign Language, she just wasn't trying to teach him ASL as a language.
@Bobzilla8735
@Bobzilla8735 6 лет назад
It wasn't just two signs. She said at the beginning she was expecting at least 3, and throughout the video we saw her trying to teach him signs for everything. More, finish, ball, car, food, book. Also there's no "all of it" when referring to a language. No one speaks "all" of a language. Baby sign language is usually simplified from ASL, when a sign normally requires fine motor skills, but that's not really necessary for any of these words.

Teaching your baby sign language starts right at infancy, not when your baby is basically able to feed themselves hand to mouth. No, it starts right away before they can ever speak or make a sound. Make the repetitive motions associated with the actions, the infant will learn to connect the two, and then as your baby grows one day everything will just CLICK and all your hard work pays off. TRUST ME. IT WORKS. I taught my daughter this method. It wasn’t easy, but the payoff was well worth it.

As an S-LP, I'd argue you can start teaching your child sign language at any age especially if they have expressive language difficulties and become frustrated. The pairing of sign language with spoken language does not hinder spoken language production. All academic research has shown that it aids in the child's understanding and production of language. You don't know if a child will have an expressive language disorder when they are first born. If they have hearing loss then yes, you'd know to start right away (if that's the route the parents want to take) however for developmental language delay, delayed talkers, or children with expressive language delay/problems you won't know until 11-12 month mark.

I work in the infant class at a Daycare center and we always teach the children 2 signs a week, it does wonders for their communication. It's so nice to see them using their signs to communicate when they aren't able to speak yet. I would definitely use sign language if I had children of my own, it's so rewarding when you see the children telling you they are hungry or when they want water. It makes it so easy on us to figure out why they are crying. You just have to be consistent with the signs, I've seen children as young as 8 months already signing words such as Eat, More, Please, and All Done. :)

@Bobzilla8735
@Bobzilla8735 6 лет назад
I think the reason this wasn't more successful was in large part because it was added so late in his development. The mom said herself in the video that he tends not to use signs when he's already figured out some other way to communicate his needs, especially when his family continues to respond to his other ways of communicating. That's not a bad thing of course; the most important thing is that he's able to communicate his needs, and the signs were just meant to help him do that. In general, baby sign language is more useful with younger children, who may resort to crying as a primary mode of communication, since they don't have the ability to verbally convey their needs yet. Speech requires a lot of fine motor skills, much more than moving your arms in simplified signs. But this child already had a fairly functional system worked out. Additionally, in this case, partially because of the lack of need, the family wasn't very committed in actually teaching him the signs. Regardless, language acquisition of any kind takes time. This could actually be compared to training a dog to respond to verbal or signed commands. I believe the average dog is about as smart as a two year old human baby, at least in terms of understanding words.
@gracievore206

I’m not sure cause my little sister turned two in September and she absolutely loves to learn signs, like I taught her mom, tiger, shoes and socks- she knows all the words but she still gets really excited to do the signs. So I’m guessing maybe the mom really isn’t that enthusiastic with the signs so the baby doesn’t want to do it either, or it’s just the babies personal choice?

There are a lot of deaf and hearing impaired people that you will come across in life and being able to communicate in their language is awesome, (just like any other language). That is also BS! I think even just learning a few signs is amazing and when he is old enough to talk he probably will still sign. My ten yr old does, and after a while we taught him ASL alphabet, so you can always spell out anything you need to communicate. Stop being a troll

We started incorporating sign language dvds (Baby Signing Time by Two Little Hands) pretty much as soon as we got home from the hospital. All of a sudden at around 9 months old, my daughter started actually using signs (baby, hat, more, eat, milk, sleep) and talking came very shortly after. At 12 months she was consistently using at least 10 signs and spoke around 50 words. She's now 19 months and speaks in 2-3 word sentences, says at least 160 words, and has increased her signing vocab too. We're working on potty training and Baby Signing Time has a DVD for that too. All in all, the videos really helped in addition to just talking to my child and reading really helped build her vocabulary and verbal communication. Kids are suoer smart, and even if you think they aren't learning something, all of a sudden they start doing it and you see they've been learning all along.

I could sign at ten months before I could speak. My mom taught me to say please and thank you and eat and drink so that we could communicate. It definitely works👍
