This was a monster of a game to condense into a single video like this, so please give a massive thanks to my editor Cloé and send her support here twitter.com/xashtaricx . I love the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series and it was a huge nostalgia trip to relive the best one in the series. I don't think I'm going to stream the postgame as its monstrously long, but I want to tackle some of the special episodes later this year. I hope everyone enjoys the nostalgia and this video :)

Well, given that you'll need to do _some_ postgame to unlock the final special episode, you could cut the postgame off there if you desire. That episode is a must though, it rivals the main story finale in how good it is.

If you can find it, idk if it’s even possible anymore, Pokemon Conquest is by far the best game in the franchise, despite it not being mainstream or well known. Yes, I did grow up playing Mystery dungeon and had multiple play throughs of the game. Conquest is a pokémon game set in Feudal Japan, with the characters named after the shōguns that ruled the prefectures, and entire battlefields to fight with pokémon in a turn system, which is more realistic than other pokémon games. All in all, pokémon conquest is completely awesome because it subverts expectations by having revolutionary mechanics that mesh together perfectly to make a once in a lifetime experience, while still retaining a lot of charm through the graphics.

Fun fact: You can use wondermail to actually legitimately recruit a Primal Dialga. You can use a code that inserts the boss fight into Beach Cove and another that gives you an egg as a reward. And because an egg can give you any Pokémon in the dungeon, Primal Dialga is in that pool of Pokémon. There's some other steps to it because of how eggs work, but I think it's neat.

@@Corundrom Actually, the real problem is there's kind of more steps to it. There are two wondermail codes. One gives you a mission which gives you an egg as a reward. The other inserts the Primal Dialga fight into floor 4 of Beach Cove. An egg has a chance of giving you any Pokémon in the dungeon, and since you inserted Primal Dialga onto that floor, Primal Dialga is in the pool of Pokémon that can be in that egg. I more just think the RU-vid video is nice because it explains it well and has more details on why it works. (Like you can't pick up the oran berry on the first floor because then the egg will only have Pokémon from the first floor.) It's just a bit wordy to explain it all here. Only to find out.. everyone has a reason to exist even if that purpose is tiny or even misleading, Not one single soul deserves to be forgotten for that is a worse fate than death. Explorers of Sky is probably my favourite game, not just for Pokémon but of all time. It is literally a dream playing through this and exploring dungeons, along with one of the best stories to boot. Best part is that almost each player Pokémon has a gimmick that the player can be used to make their experience theirs. Treecko and Pikachu get Agility; all the grass starters get Bullet Seed; Confuse Ray on Vulpix; Smokescreen on Charmander and Cyndiquil; Water Pokémon having extra ground in most Dungeons; Chimchar, Meowth and Todadile get Fury Swipes, the list goes on. The only Pokémon I can’t say have anything I can think of are Torchic, Eevee and Phanpy, but a player can have a fun time with them nonetheless.

Speaking as someone who considers this his favorite game of all time, I think one of the most important aspects to the story is how both the Player and the Partner get an equal focus in terms of story importance. This is something the other PMD games kinda struggle with to an extent, and I think Explorers’ exceptional balance is part of why it works so well. Like, the Partner is very much the protagonist. They’re kinda shy and unassuming, they want to become an explorer but lack in self-esteem, and not being all on their own is what finally helps them work up the nerve to take those steps. Over the course of the game, you watch them grow in confidence and resolve, but they also make it clear that having you there with them is part of what helps them build that confidence. You became such a close part of their life that, even at the end when they’ve reached the end of their character arc, they still break down in tears thinking of you. But then, the Player is also very much the protagonist. Your amnesia is part of what drives the story forward early on; at first it provides an excuse to join the Guild and be introduced to the wider world, while also providing some mystery here and there. You think you might learn something at Fogbound Lake, only for the mystery to remain unsolved. Then the twist hits, and when your backstory is revealed, most people do undergo their own shift in terms of how they look at their character and the game itself. It’s a rare case where a silent, ‘self-insert’ protagonist manages to have their own character arc, and it stems from the way the twist affects you, the IRL player. And again, of course, you both share equal footing. The Partner doesn’t overshadow the Player’s importance, but you also don’t overshadow them, either. The mystery of your identity and the reveals that come from it are a huge part of the story, but the Partner’s growth and desires are equally impactful. The whole emotional hook is arguably built upon the relationship between the two of you; you both work better together, both in-universe and in terms of writing.

Man, Explorers has such a good soundtrack. It's super solid throughout, but it really shines in the closing hours of the game.

Crossing the sea of time's song always gives me chills, and the sequence after temporal tower always hits me at my core with emotions. This game is a gem and I will treasure it always
